QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:15 PM) BTW, the word is Kerry Wood wants $9 million a year. If he's you're plan B, its time to move to C if that doesn't drastically reduce. Thats why Im confused on where there was no push to resign Putz. Putz showed you what he can do when healthy, we has dominant. He signed for 4M in 2010 and 4.5M in 2011, where else does KW think he is going to get a shut down free agent reliever for that price.

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 01:47 PM) But who knows if any of those guys might come to play for us. I'd rather have PK than Viciedo at first in 2011. If you think Viciedo is anything but Plan D I dont think you know KW all that well.

QUOTE (hitlesswonder @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 01:36 PM) I'd like the Sox to move on. Even if the Sox get that number to drop, you would be looking at something like $13M a year for 3 years? There are better ways to use that money than on an aging 1B coming off a career year. You could get Lee or someone like him on a 1 or 2 year deal for half that money and be able to sign help for the pen as well. This is a time when putting together the best team should be more important than sentimental attachment to a player. I really dont think this is about sentinment, these are professional baseball players and executives not fans, not amateurs. KW & Company know whats its going to take to put a winning team out there and PK is obviously a part of that. But thats not to say he doesnt have his Plan B and Plan C if PK doesnt work out. The reason there is a lot of "we want PK back" feeling is becuase he can really contribute in the middle of the order and is power from the right side is much more significant than Plan B (DLee), Plan C (Pena/Laroche), or Plan D (Viciedo).

QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 01:21 PM) There's nothing wrong with having a high starting point, doesn't mean he'll get it (the bidding on Dunn was supposed to start at $60M over 4 years). I get the impression that the Sox offer will be the top $$ offer, unless someone unexpected jumps into the bidding. I cant imagine anyone offers up 3/45 or 4/60 for Konerko, unless of course the nationals get involved. Seriously can anyone see Konerko getting more than 3/36. Look at other older sluggers guys like Matsui, Vlad have been getting 1 year 6M and Bobby Abreu, who is the same age as Konerko signed an extension last year with the Angels for 2/18. So like I was saying where has the market shown us that Konerko will get 15M per year....IT WONT!

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 06:55 PM) SI_JonHeyman Putz gets $10 mil guaranteed, 2 years from arizona I don't think the Sox wanted to give him two years. Hes getting like 4M in 2011 and 4.5M in 2012 with a 1.5M buyout or 6.5M team option. Thats not a bad deal at all. Im dissapointed the sox couldn't match that and pay him 1M and 1.5M more collectively than what we paid him last year 3M. There are not that many solid free agent relievers that make 4M on the open market.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 04:08 PM) i dont know, but right now our pen is quite thin....Right now I have Thornton pencilled in as closer, sale and santos setting up, and pena as the long man....lots of quesiton marks.... KW has since confirmed that the Putz ship has sailed. http://twitter.com/Joeynach Meanwhile there are some relievers and closers available that my be on KW list; Rafael Soriano, Manny Corpas, Kerry Wood, Manny Delcarmen, Grant Balfour, Jess Crain, Matt Guerrier, Aaron Heilman, John Rauch, Takashi Saito, Hideki Okajima, Dan Wheeler, Scott Downs

QUOTE (hawksox13 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 03:39 PM) Did I miss something because when I clicked on that article there was no mention of how much the deal would be worth, only that it's a two year deal with a club option for a third. I see nothing wrong with that. No dollar amounts just yet, im checking twitter every couple minutes for an update. But its safe to assume closers get paid at least $5-$8M annually on the open market.

Says Dbacks are close to signing Putz to two deal with option for 3rd, going to make him their closer. Do we match? Here is the link http://taoofsteve.mlblogs.com/archives/201..._to_get_pu.html

White Sox could be top 5 payroll team in 2011

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:29 PM) Reinsdorf said today the payroll will be around $110M, TIFWIW. Then I cant see how they can sign all their Arbitration eligible players, sign Konerko, and sign a bullpen arm or two. -

It doesnt look like even if there is insurance on Peavy that the insurance will pay enough to justify a 25M bump in payroll for 2010. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 02:40 AM) I have a slight worrisome feeling that the extra money might be coming from Peavy's insurance... Lol, never thought about that. It would be interesting to try and find that out. I remember a conversation from last year, cant remember if its was here or on 670 The Score, but I recall a fair amount of certainty that the sox were getting a good insurance payment on Peavy. I think this is a good topic to get Boers and Bernstein on, they would get to the bottom of this. -
My calculations have the White Sox committed at $92.55M to 15 players for 2011. This includes: Buehrle (14M) + Peavy (16M) + Jackson (8.35M) + Floyd (5M) + Thornton (3M) + Castro (1.2M) + AJ (2M) + Vizquel (1.75M) + Viciedo (1.25M) + Ramirez (2.75M) + Teahen (4.75M) + Rios (12M) + Pierre (8.5M) + Dunn (12M) This does not include arbitration eligibility for Quentin (4.5M estimate), Danks (5.5M estimate), Pena (2.5M estimate). This does not include team controlled salaries for Sale (400K estimate ), Morel (400K estimate), Santos (400K estimate), Lillibridge (400K estimate), and Beckham (600K estimate). This includes the break even money coming in for Pierre (+3.5M) and the money going out for Linebrink (-3.5M). 2011 Payroll Commitments + Estimations = $107.25 (23 Players) Now add in Konerko (12M estimate) and Putz/New Bullpen Arm (5M estimate) and you are at $124.25M! In terms of 2010 a payroll of about $125M would be 6th highest in all of baseball. The 3rd and 5th teams (Cubs, Mets) payrolls are slated to come way down this year. Therefore the sox could easily be a top 5 payroll team for 2011. Wow pretty impressive, Im not sure a lot of us saw this coming.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 10:27 PM) How come we always talk about age of players on here and the Yankees don't give a flip about age. They are gonna sign Jeter and Mariano to huge deals and there's a chance their performances could start dipping because of age. I saw somebody concerned about Lexi's age. That to me is kind of nutty. To me its not about age per say about its mileage and skill set. Dont tell me how old a pitcher is, tell me how long his been pitching in the MLB, tell me how many IP he has. For a hitter its a little more tricky, tell me what kind of skill set he brings to the table, is he a station-station slugger, a guy who steals bases and needs his legs to get on base. Then based on his tenure you can figure out if time is factor that would reduce his ability to perform based on his skill set. For example, Im much more concerned with signing Carl Crawford for 5-6 years than I would be signing Konerko for 2-3 years. Crawford is a guy who needs to be healthy, nimble, and quick on his feet to add value to your team, something that I would be worried about maintaining for the next 6 years. Konerko is more a stationary slugger, his value comes from standing in the batters box and smacking the ball over the fence. His skill set is something that isnt as risky, something that Thome has showed us wont be an issue even in your 40s.

QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) I thought it was too easy. DLee would be the much smarter decision. Hell our IF defense would be very, very good. I don't think many realize how underrated Lee is with the bat as well. Put up some nice splits with Atlanta after the trade as well (albeit small sample size) so he's far from done. I dont think the concern with DLee is that he will just be bad like he was in the first half of 2010. Which by the way is a direct product of being surrounded by garbage and losing Aramis Ramirez most of the season. I think the real issue here is our assumption that DLee will cost less and therefore the sox can have DLee + Putz/New Bullpen Arm for the price of Konerko. Again thats an assumption. I think the real question is if you can have DLee + Putz/New Bullpen Arm, or Konerko + Putz/New Bullpen Arm, would you then still want to DLee.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 01:42 AM) The nice thing is there are several options at first base, some better than others, but still several solid choices to choose from. I would be very hesitant in the long run... which is the ultimate goal for any business/franchise. People are throwing around the idea of a large commitment to konerko, on top of two huge commitments to rios and dunn? The sox have one of the biggest question marks in the game with all things considered in peavy. Peavy is guaranteed 33 million over the next two years to be nothing more than what i already mentioned, a question mark. A smart move has to be made. A smart move, in my opinion, is not retaining a player at 10+ million for 3 years, given our situation. Floyd/ danks will eventually get paid, and get paid well, soon. Let's say quentin just so happens to tear the cover off the ball (one of the leagues bests) this up coming season. Unrealistic? Yes, probably. Beyond belief? No. But the man would be paid, and he would be paid by the white sox. These things have to be considered. There is a ton of money potentially locked up in only a select few. One or two more long term, extremely expensive contracts, over the next two seasons will be enough to cripple this team for many years to come. I see someone coming in on a one year deal, and there very well could/will be an option for a second year. If not, a straight up two year deal can not be written out of the equation for whoever is brought in. I'm not against what happened today, i'm all for it, but what people have to remember is there will always be three sides to every story ever told. I dont think a 2/24 or 3/36 deal for Konerko qualifies as a monster long term that is difficult to unload. I think the 7/126 the cubs gave Soriano falls in line with that thinking.

QUOTE (OsweGo-Go Sox @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 08:13 AM) False. Upper deck is good. Upper Deck is bad, have you ever sat in the Upper Deck in Milwaukee, NY, Atlanta, Texas, Cleveland. I have they all suck. Its emptier, you are far away, the attractions are in the lower deck, and your more likely to be surrounded by the field tripping/bday kids clubs.

Sox engaged in "advanced trade discussions"
joeynach replied to Leonard Washington's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 02:44 PM) I'd think that was an overpay. You do realize that Rafael Soriano was traded for Jesse Chavez last year straight up. The same Jess Chavez who was then traded to the Royals for Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth, the same Jesse Chavez who owns a career 5.09 ERA in 145 IP. So if the Padres are going to get either Hudson or Flowers for Heath Bell....thats a freaking steal for them. -
I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine who works for the sox about this very subject. Frankly, its becuase I was wondering if they are hiring becuase it seems like a great job. Anyway, I know that Silver Chalice does provide a new revenue stream for the sox. How much and is it used on payroll I cant be sure. But I do know that the new SEC Iphone App is all Silver Chalice, thats their product that they created and marketed for the SEC. So you would assume clients like that can provide the Sox and Silver Chalice with a solid new revenue stream. Seriously though, are they hiring?

I dont know the answer to your question, but I do know that the Upper Deck sucks. All Upper Decks do, not just USCF. IMO the environment is much weaker, so much more removed from sitting the lower bowl. If someone offered me UD seats or a nice HD flat screen and comfy couch I prefer the latter. After I stopped going on JCC day camp field trips and 12 year old birthday parties the idea of sitting in the UD at this point (by choice) just seems awful. If you can get outfield seats over Upper Deck seats.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 01:36 PM) Well, the $3.5 appears to be the real number. I'm not sure who changed it or when. Sux balls
-
Wait how did this become sox send $1.5M to sox send $3.5M, that makes the trade less good. Any replacement is gonna get paid essentially 500K anyway so the net gain is like $1.5M, before the net gain was $3.5M, enough to translate to a real Major league addition.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 09:45 PM) Putz closing would be a good thing for this organization. I agree with this 100%, though I am also in on trading for Heath Bell, usually the asking price for closer about to make $6M+ and close to free agency isnt very high. I think Rafael Soriano was traded from the Braves to Rays last year for something like one mid level minor league.

My gut tells me KW is in on Heath Bell. Hes a solid closer who will make something between 5-6M in arbitration so hes rather affordable.
