If you had to bet on one signing of a new player.....

Carl Everett -
I agree 100% with this. He is such a huge addition to our bullpen and having a strong bullpen is absolutely essential to having a winning team. We have some decent starting depth at the moment, especially if Peavy returns OK. That being said 2012 and beyond i have no problem with the sox seeing if he can become a young solid starter such as Danks or Flloyd.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 7, 2010 -> 12:32 PM) I hope we can get this done Are you really gonna be that upset with Castro over AJ at catcher next year.

I love letting the numbers speak for themselves and then you thrown in saber stats and WAR into player/team evaluation....wow im totally aroused!

QUOTE (soxfan-kwman @ Nov 5, 2010 -> 10:58 AM) I agree & think Beltre might be the most realistic idea. Sounds like a better forum topic, we just can't draw free agents without overpaying. V-Mart is as good of an idea as signing Carl Crawford,B.J. Upton, ... last few years Tori Hunter, Bobby Abreu, Chone Figgins,Johny Stinking Damon, etc. And more unrealistic, trade for Colby Rasmus I think we should. Sign Beltre(good d-fense at 3B, big stick in the lineup), Sign Rick Ankiel & Melky Cabrera (rotating outfielders/DH's), Re-sign Paulie( solid realistic FA signing), Re-sign AJ(try him a 1B on some off days & DH a little). Plus we can allow Tank, Morrel to develop and fill in for injuries. This gives us tons of flexible line-ups & this is what Ozzie would like. Spending this amount of money would allow us to bring back Bobby Jenks, who I think will have a great year!!! Tons of flexible lineups = more decisions for Ozzie to make = NO THANK YOU. Managers are at their best when they can consistently through a productive lineup and rotation out there. History shows when you have so much uncertainty and you leave it up to the manager to make those decisions, you are much more prone to failure.

Im actually more interested in Beltre. An awesome defender at 3B who bats with a high average, slugging percentage, and can consistently drive in runs. Plus hes prolly in the 2/24 or 3/36 contract range here. Something pretty good for the sox and Beltre in terms of length and dollars as a free agent.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 30, 2010 -> 01:56 AM) I could see that happening. It's been a rocky ride the past season and a half. He might be better off leaving then coming back in a blaze of glory once he retires to be a color commentator or something. I would think Paulie would demand a 3 year deal; I think last year's excellent contract year season guarantees somebody is gonna give him 3 for 30 minimum, maybe 3 for 36 if he finds the right team. I would agree for a team's sake, two years is ideal, but he SHOULD demand 3. I think somebody will give him 3 years, don't you? Yeah he might be able to get 3 years guaranteed. It all depends on how things shake down around him. What will D Lee, Berkman, Huff, Pena get in their free agency, will they receive lower length commitments but decent salaries? I could see Konerko getting something like 2 Years Guaranteed with some sort of vesting 3rd year option.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 29, 2010 -> 07:08 PM) How about the simple fact that maybe Konerko wants to go elsewhere and experience another organization? Might be, but I still maintain that gets the same contract amount.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 29, 2010 -> 06:38 PM) They did a contract crowdsourcing on FanGraphs today. Average response was that Paulie was going to get 2 years ant $20 million. I think that seems about right. Ha I didnt even see that. I should work for fangraphs.

There is no question that the biggest decision this offseason is whether to bring back fan favorite and white sox lifer Paul Konerko. While post people, me included love this guy, I think we should take a much more detailed look into the situation. That being said there are several reason why I think the sox will resign Konerko. I think that if we really take a long hard look at Konerko, the market for 1B slugger types, and some comparable players we can make a much more educated guess than simply say “I think hes gone” or “I think he will resign”. 1. There is no doubt Paul Konerko had a monster 2010 year, at age 35 he posted a line of .312/.393/.584 with 39 HR, 39 2B, and 111 RBI. In comparison, Konerko’s career 162 game average is .280/.356/.498 with 32 HR, 30 2B, and 101 RBI. So looking forward I think one can expect a little regression from his 2010 numbers, but still very solid middle the order production as his 162 game average suggests. If the sox were to part ways with Konerko they would need another 1B middle of the order slugger who would also be in line to produce similar numbers of 30+ HR and 100+ RBI. The typical candidates would be Prince Fielder or Adam Dunn who are both free agents. 2. If we look at both Fielder and Dunn we see comparable 162 game average productions. Fielder owns a line of .279/.385/.579 with 37 HR and 104 RBI, Dunn owns a line of .250/.381/.521 with 40 HR and 98 RBI. If you consider possible trades of the 2012 campaign you can throw Adrian Gonzalez in the mix as well, he owns a line of .284/.368/.507 with 35 HR and 99 RBI. 3. So basically, age aside, the Dunn/Fielder/Gonzalez option really only offers a moderate level of excess offensive production, if any at all. Considering that these three candidates are all much younger than Konerko it is safe to assume that their next contracts will be much longer in length (and $$) than Konerko’s. I think its safe to assume that each of these options will receive 4-6 years and anywhere from $60-100M on the open market. But what would a guy like Konerko get? 4. I think its safe to assume that if you can land Konerko for considerably less than the other three candidates than the sox would probably resign their fan favorite, their captain, etc. So what does a guy like Paul Konerko cost, well let’s take a look at what Bobby Abreu recently received. After a 2009 season with the Angels (at age 35), Abreu posted a .293/.390/.435 line with 15 HR, 103 RBI, and 30 SB. His 162 game average is .296/.400/.488 with 21 HR, 97 RBI, and 29 SB. Once again very comparable to Konerko’s minus the small HR discrepancy and the fact that Abreu can steal bases. Abreu signed a 2 Year 18M extension a $9M team option for 2012 with a $1M buyout. 5. So why will the sox resign Konerko. Simply because the level of production he offers compared to the alternatives will be a much more attainable figure for the sox to take on. The White Sox are rarely in the business of signing FA sluggers to the tune of 5-6 year deals for upwards of $100M. However, they are in the business of retaining home grown talent for very friendly terms. Even if Konerko is able to get a 3rd Year guaranteed (something Abreu was not) at say $10M per year, that its still a steal, for both parties. Given Konerko’s age 35, compared to the other FA 1B sluggers who are quite a bit younger, its doubtful Konerko is going to get some sort of 5 Year deal for $75M. That being said, if the market for Konerko is as predicted, something like 2-3 Years at $9-11M per year, then there is no doubt in my mind Konerko chooses the sox and the sox choose Konerko. 6. Summary lines (162 game average): a. Dunn - .250/.381/.521, 40 HR, 98 RBI b. Fielder - .279/.385/.579, 37 HR, 104 RBI c. Gonzalez - .284/.368/.507, 35 HR, 99 RBI d. Abreu - .296/.400/.488, 21 HR, 97 RBI (29 SB) e. Konerko - .280/.356/.498, 32 HR, 101 RBI 7. Prediction: Konerko gets a contract more similar to Abreu’s from last year than Dunn or Fielder’s on the open market this year. Both age and lower OBP/SLG will keep Konerko in the $10M and 2-3 year contract range when compared to what Dunn/Fielder/Gonzalez are likely to get in FA. 8. Official prognosis: Konerko signs with the sox either for 2/20 or 3/30.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 29, 2010 -> 01:57 AM) Uh what the f***? Nice dream world there, sun times. What a pipe dream, this would have been a steal for KW and led him all the way to the White House as president.

Im happy for him. He is what he is, a plus defender, but a free swinger and streaky hitter. I feel no regrets though that he is not with this team anymore.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2010 -> 04:02 PM) It is crazy to think we are almost halfway through the US Cellular contract. Indeed it is, wouldnt be surprised if the sox and US Cellular come up with an extended deal at some point in the next few years.

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Oct 26, 2010 -> 06:21 PM) I'm happy that Casto's option was picked up but only if that means he is the backup and his role remains the same next year. Does anyone realize how productive Castro was in limited AB's last year. He hit 8 Hr in 128 AB. If he gets a full a year of AB's, say about 460 for a catcher, thats about 30 HR. Wow.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Oct 26, 2010 -> 02:35 PM) I bet Flowers and Viciedo are both used as trade bait to fill in some of the holes. They could defiantly fill in that big hole of the lack of toppings on KW's next pizza.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 01:53 PM) How is Quentin "locked down" to hit 30 HRs and get 90 RBIs? He's done that once. And with his 2nd-year arb raise, he'll be paid slightly more than one win costs on the market. Whether or not the Sox should keep him is another debate, but as I've said before, you cannot count on any surplus value from him In what most ppl consider not a good year for CQ he had 27 HR and 85 RBI.....so with some evening out and rounding its not that much of stretch to nominalize his production at 30 HR and 90 RBI. AKA the Jermaine Dye production.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 01:07 PM) Last year, he'd have been worth about 1 WAR at DH. He'd have been an upgrade for the Sox at DH...but that's because we made a ridiculous decision on DH. Let me put one other thing into the discussion....this is Carlos's first arbitration year. His salary is going to go from the minimum to about $5 million. That's less of a bargain this year. If he put up another .800-ish OPS next year from the DH spot, he'd be looking at another boost, maybe to the $10 million range. And frankly, I'd consider him a non-tender candidate at that point. He was arbitration eligible last year and got $3.2M, this is his second arb eligible year and he will prolly get a raise in the $4.5-$5M range. THat being said in his final arb eligible year I would expect something like $6-$8M if he keeps up 30HR and 90 RBI production.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 12:26 PM) Wins above replacement player from Fangraphs: Carlos Quentin: 0. Adam Dunn: 3.9. Carlos picked up a ton of home runs, but didn't do anything else effectively, he only got 527 PA's because of all the injury time, and he was a much larger liability in the field than Dunn because you can hide defense at 1b and not have it hurt you as much. So put him at DH.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 24, 2010 -> 11:33 AM) Adam Dunn 648 plate appearances 38 homers 103 RBI .260 BA .356 OBP .892 OPS--worth $11 million to $15 million a year Carlos Quentin 527 plate appearances 26 homers 87 RBI .243 BA .342 OBP .821 OPS----worthless? I don't think so. Quentin is another guy Sox fans will realize is better than they think if he goes away. I agree, CQ has value. How many other cheap, affordable young power hitters are out there. Yeah his Def blows, but this is the AL, we have a DH position so use it. CQ is perfect for that role and that being said someone with essentially locked down 30 Hr and 90 RBI should never be looked at as someone who should be sent away for a bag of balls. CQ should be our everyday DH, and let the sox fill that open OF spot internally or externally.

QUOTE (rockren @ Oct 20, 2010 -> 09:50 PM) I would do this deal if I were the WSox....probably the Rangers, too (as my above post shows I fully expect Lee to bolt). However, I'd find a way to move MB and deal with Danks in arbitration. I know this has been mentioned in another thread, but with the Cardinals bringing back La Russa for another year...you can't tell me Rasmus for MB/Danks2 isn't appealing to them. If the WSox had to pick up 2-4 mil of MB's final year on his contract...I'm guessing the WSox would be fine with that considering they just gave away $4mil to the Dodgers without caring. Besides, freeing up 10-14 mil makes it easier for the WSox to chase Crawford next year along with Dunn. I see Rasmus getting moved with the rift between he and Pujols. You could certainly argue Rasmus being moved for more than MB...like Greinke per say. Is the assumption that if we get rasmus he plays RF next year with CQ as the DH and then in 2012 he can play either corner OF. Cuz if thats the case we dont have room for Crawford, but could use Dunn at 1B. That would give the sox a sweet lineup for 2011. Pierre Omar Rios Dunn Rasmus CQ Alexi Castro/Flowers Beckham

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Oct 20, 2010 -> 07:11 PM) Alexeiiiiiiiiiiii.....YESSSSSSSSSSSSS YESSSSSSS YESSSSSSSSS YESSSSSSSS[/hawk] Probably one of the most underrated players in the game. No one ever talks about him. Sadly, he probably won't end up with the GG. I have been saying this for weeks now. This needs to be part of Alexi Giannoulias campaign.

QUOTE (balfanman @ Oct 19, 2010 -> 06:45 PM) I'm not a fan of "homerun ball", so I'm all for moving the fences back. I wish that we had Detroits ballpark. Moving the fences back wouldn't do much. You would get like and extra 6 ft from left of the pen to the CF batters eye. So the gap goes from 375 to 381, and CF goes from 400 to maybe 408 or something. Its not enough to make a difference, its not enough to re-organize the way you compose your team. Plus its good to have a few feet of gap separating the outfield seats and the wall, its keep fan interference from becoming an issue like you saw at Yankee stadium last night.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 17, 2010 -> 11:35 AM) There's zero chance we get Crawford. He's going to go for $17m+ over 5 years. The Angels and Yankees will outbid us by a landslide. And Beane LOVES Barton, no way he is available for Quentin. And you don't stick one of the best defensive LF in the game in RF so Juan Pierre can play there. It's more likely Rios goes back to RF and Crawford to CF, but that isn;t ideal either. It's not a fit for what it would cost. I think the Giants could easily sign crawford, they have no real outfield depth and they really lack a top of the order hitter. Their outfield is basically Rowand in CF thru 2012 and then nothing. Andres Torres sucks and Pat Burrell is a free agent. Your telling me they couldnt use Crawford there and then plug him and Freddy Sanchez in for the top of the order. Plus they will have some $$ to spend this offseason as well.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 19, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) That's pretty funny. Ever since we started calling it the cell I've wanted our outfield wall to be prison bars full of the roughest inmates on earth that harass the other team and scare them to death. Especially around the other team's bullpen. The real Cell, if you will. I should write Brooks. I saw we just paint the visitor clubhouse pink and put up like paintings and pictures of like the Teletubbies and other goofy stuff. I heard teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins make their visitor locker room pink to make the environment uncomfortable for the visiting team.
