  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 05:07 PM) Really? I've got to disagree on Santos. He was doing what a whole lot of really good bullpen guys do; pairing a really good slider with a low-mid 90's fastball with some movement on it. That's usually a formula for success out of the bullpen. I wouldnt overlook the league adjust factor after a players 1st season.......says Gordon Beckham, Zach Duke, Dontrelle Willis, Bobby Crosby, etc
  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 03:55 PM) It could be. I think the offense will be good enough that if the bullpen falters, the offense will win their fair share of games and allow Williams to find the proper bullpen arm. The backend is still strong on paper with Thornton, Sale, and Santos. Maybe lightning strikes and the rest of the pieces fall into place. Who knows? But don't trade a highly valued piece for a bullpen arm at this point in time. There are always bullpen arms available and they can be acquired at virtually any time. Im not advocating that we make a trade, Im advocating that we need more, period. And personally, I like Santos, but I think part of his success was that no one had ever seen him before. I dont expect him to be as dominant the second time around. I was disappointed to see the sox let Putz go for 4 and 4.5M. There are not that many relievers, epecially via FA that you know are "shut down" guys that you can get for $4M. Look at what Benoit got, hell look at what we gave Linebrink and Dotel. Im concerned with where the bullpen depth is going to come from.
  3. Now watch Danny "no one has heard of me" Valencia have a nice sophomore slump year.
  4. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 01:49 PM) I think they might sign a 1 RHP and LHP for the pen, and plug Carter and Infante in for the other spots. Achillies heel anyone. Seriously without the ability to have a complete shut down bullpen this team will go no where.
  5. My interpretation is that we are a $120M payroll team this year, not $110. If we are sitting at about $118 including our estimates for Arb players and league min players than we have to clear something like another $5-6M if we want a couple of good relievers. Not $10-12M. Im still curious where the savings are going to come from, Quentin isnt being traded to save 4M. Teahen is the odd man out but who is going to want him for $4.5M. The other point is if you spend $120M and have a great team thats missing a bullpen guy or two, why wouldnt u just spend an extra $5-6M to round out the team (pen). Makes little sense to go through the trouble of building this team then stopping short at the bullpen over a feabile amount of money like 5M or so.
  6. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 01:16 PM) Also no word about Linebrink and the 3.5 we're giving away. Which is negated by the 3.5M we are getting from the dodgers for Pierre.
  7. What is the luxury tax threshold and how much over does this Crawford contact put the Red Sox.
  8. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 08:49 PM) This thread has to be a joke. Like, a thread titled "let's give props to Kotsay for his 2010 performance" level joke. Cowley has been the least accurate, most all over the board guy we've seen quoted in all of this. I just vommited
  9. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 07:50 PM) He was all over the Konerko story proving again nobody in the media has better Sox sources than he does. Lame, hes doing his job.
  10. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 03:16 PM) I reserve at least one bullpen spot for a guy out of the minors, heck, even if it's mop up duty, someones gotta do it. Infante would be my choice. That leaves you with 2 relievers to be acquired. Still gonna need more than 2M to get 2 solid relievers.
  11. This from Ken Rosenthal's twitter, "One reason bullpen market slowed down: Benoit's contract raised expectations for a number of relievers to unrealistic levels"
  12. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 03:00 PM) Danks - 3.45M, Pena - 1.2M, Quentin - 3.2M all due for raises. Can someone predict what kind of numbers we're looking at as far as their salaries in 2011? For argument sake I have all three making 11M in 2011. Morel, Sale and Beckham will make close to league minimum. Not much money there. probably around 1.5M. That gives you a payroll of 117M+ without spending anything on the bullpen! Feel free to correct my estimates. I have only basic knowledge on how this works. I dont think you are that far off. Danks probably gets something like 5.5M, Pena 2.2M, Quentin 4.5M. Thats about $12.2M, add another $1.3M for out league min candidates. That puts us at 118.05M. If JR said team payroll for 2011 is going to be $120M than we dont have much to spend to solidify 3 bullpen spots. There is no way we can have a good bullpen with just 2M to spend there so either KW is going to have dump salary somewhere or JR will have to stretch payroll a bit.
  13. Does our resigning of AJ look worse now that Ryan Doumit is said to be available. The Pirates are trying hard to trade Ryan Doumit and are willing to eat salary, reports MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch. Doumit is a solid hitter and can probably be had for a mid level minor leaguer. He makes 5.1M in 2011, and his a club option for 7.25M in 2012, and 8.25M in 2013. While hes a bit more expensive than AJ hes also owed a bit more money the pirates are said to be willing to eat some of his contract. He owns a 162 game average line of .268/.332/.438 with 18 HR and 72 RBI. Im not sure about his ability to call a game or handle a pitching staff, but he is a good offensive player.
  14. After the Konerko signing our team payroll stands at $104.55M. Still need to sign Danks, Pena, Quentin, Beckham, Morel, Sale, New Bullpen Arm(s). I think whats very interesting is that this going for it attitude is defiantly for 2011 and 2012. Sox also have 81.5M committed to 2012, that number drops to 38 for 2013 so the window of opportunity for this core of players is this year and next.
  15. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:29 AM) i see where you're coming from, I like Pena, but he's still a risk at this point after last year. I know he's two years off a hand injury now, but still, Sox seemingly going balls to the wall this year, not sure if Pena at that price would have been the ideal move. Well considering Pena got 1/10 and the Dbacks offered Konerko 3/30 I dont really see that the sox overpaid that much. Obviously the sox were going be the team that offered the most Paulie, your paying for the man, the myth the legend, so he gets $2M more than Pena. Konerko's power from the right side is better than Pena's from the left and yes that probably worth an extra $2M. Pena will be ok, but dont believe anything you hear from him or the cubs camp about how this is perfect fit and he wanted to be there....blah blah. Its the same move as Adrian Beltre signing a 1/10 contract with the red sox last year. Get paid $10M, have a solid bounce back year, leave for multi-year deal in the offseason. Thats all this is.
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 02:24 AM) Not sure how defiant that really is, considering quite a few people predicted around the same value...mmmmk. Though a bit younger, most players coming off career worst performances look for some sort of rebound deal (low base + incentives) to prove themselves, similar to what Vlad got last year which I think was 1 year 6M, same thing you will see Manny get, etc. Pena is coming off a year where he hit .197 and posted an OPS of .732. For comparison even Anduw Jones posted an ops 100 points higher last year.
  17. QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 12:53 AM) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/cubs...e-to-terms.html Me thinks Hendry Just made D-Lee a bit more expensive. Me thinks Hendry is an awful GM, awful talen evaluator, awful at budget allocation, awful at valuing player worth....aka a sports agents dream. In my opinion Hendry has shown a history of handing out money and contracts based on position, not player, not performance history, not even expectation. For example set up men make $5M so John Grabow you get 5M, corner outfielders make $12M so fukudome you get $12M per year, 1B make around $10M therefore Pena here is $10M, SP make $12M so Ryan Dempster here is $12M, big name free agents get 7/126 deals so Soriano here is your 7/126 deal. HENDRY = BAD!
  18. Wow so Pena is getting 1 year 10 M. I guess that good in terms of length but are you seriously paying a 1B that hit .197 with 28 HR about 4M less than what Dunn got and about 12M less than what Paulie was getting. Wow, Id have to say I defiantly saw something like 6-7M for Pena with an option for $10M on the back end.
  19. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 07:21 PM) Yuk. The Sox could sign him even with a big PK deal I dont think the two are mutually exclusive, perhaps with someone like Kerry Wood that would be the case. Im still wondering why we haven't heard about interest in Manny Delcarmen, I know Kenny has been after him in the past and he was non-tendered.
  20. Jon Morosi tweeted that the white sox and rays are looking at Accardo. Obviously we need bullpen help and its been rather predicited that he would be one of the names for KW to look it. Morosi tweeted it and I retweeted it, along with other sox news on twitter and from winter meetings http://twitter.com/joeynach
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:58 PM) And all calling in collect cause none of them were making significant money when they were in our bullpen. If you get paid by number of people you get out then yes, they made no $$. Now if they got paid by number of people you walked, hit by pitch, or gave up hits to................
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:52 PM) I think KW doesn't want either for the price and the health concerns. Yeah Andrew Sisco, Ryan Bukvich, David Aardsma are all calling in.
  23. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:52 PM) *cough* Lol!!!
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:49 PM) I think health was a concern. So do you want Putz to pitch 55IP at 4M or Wood to pitch 65IP at 9M.
  25. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 02:43 PM) He's cute and yet ferocious. Gay
