  1. Where are the 90-loss people? (You know who you are.)
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 14, 2012 -> 06:31 PM) Nice title that isn't taken anywhere out of the article... Joe would be proud. You obviously don't have even the simplest understanding of how the newspaper business works. The writer of an article is not responsible for the headline. Hence the above statement does not work.
  3. If this bullpen is for real, comprised of Jones, Reed, and Santiago, these minor league rankings will have been rendered meaningless.
  4. Santos will probably end up where he was with the Sox. A middle-of-the-road closer.
  5. They say a team takes on the manager's personality and through the first two games the team has been workmanlike and shown a sense of calmness in a very tough road environment. early, make that very early returns, are promising.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 10:13 PM) I love the irony of you jumping on someone for being all over the place. As usual I have no idea what you are talking about.
  7. Lots of positives about how Ventura has managed these first two games and the way the team has played. Best part is how Ventura hasn't let his starter start an inning and get in trouble before taking him out.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 09:46 PM) That drop already occurred. But that also means that there is once again room for revenue growth if you can put a winning roster together. How many games do they have to win to draw 2 million this year. I say 90.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 09:38 PM) If that was the only explanation...then it doesn't make sense to cut back on salary so much and bring in a rookie manager...unless you're committed to a multi-year recovery process The payroll cut is the result of the drop in attendance that will occur.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 08:53 PM) The only reason I ever could come up with for why Kenny was retained this year was that JR told him to do bigger moves like Dunn, in order to give Ozzie a chance to save his job. Or the organization believes last year was Guillen's doing. And they may be right.
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 09:24 PM) Just got home. How did Peavy look? C+
  12. Guillen probably would have pinch run for Dunn. Good move by Ventura leaving him in.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 09:06 PM) He's arbitration eligible this year, and last year's performance was not worth a $3 million first year arbitration deal. There is no chance he gets non-tendered. His defense and pedigree is enough for someone to trade for him.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 09:01 PM) There's no "Selling low" on him. He's a non-tender candidate at the end of the year if he repeats last year's performance. There's no chance he gets non-tendered.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 07:07 PM) Yes. If Kenny Williams was told to cut payroll by $25 million this year, and there is any chance he would be given only 1 year to see the rebuilding process through, that would reflect very bad on ownership. Very few teams can cut that kind of payroll while playing for "That year". You can't demand those 2 things and be a fair owner. Firing the GM for not winning enough games after forcing that level of payroll cut would just be ridiculous. You can't ask him to plan for the long term and then fire him based on short term performance. If they were going to fire him, then it should have been after last season. If he's retained for this year, then you need at the very least 2 years of evaluation to see where the rebuilding process will go. 3 would be much more sensible. Kenny Williams didn't deserve to be retained this year. You can't retain a GM for a rebuilding that is responsible for the worst farm system in MLB.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 05:08 PM) Wow, KW was so smart to trade Santos, he already blew another save today. Still waiting for your Alexei Ramirez/Lillibridge plan to be expanded upon. There's no reason we can't finish ahead of the Indians (thanks to the ill-advised Jimenez trade) and Twins. The Royals look like they might be tough to beat for 2nd. You had the Sox possibly contending with the Tigers during spring training. You are all over the road my friend.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 05:08 PM) Wow, KW was so smart to trade Santos, he already blew another save today. Still waiting for your Alexei Ramirez/Lillibridge plan to be expanded upon. Lillibridge gets first shot at SS, if he can't play there find someone else.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 04:49 PM) You asked for a list of All-Stars and Silver Sluggers, all of them fit that category except perhaps Rowand. And I purposely excluded Griffey, Jr., and Vizquel, too. Oh, and Alex Rios was a 2 time All-Star with the Blue Jays. Not to mention Jake Peavy, Cy Young/All-Star. Thomas, Ordonez, and Lee were not on any of the '06-'11 teams.
  19. The Red Sox are less than ordinary, Tigers beating up on them isn't surprising
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 04:39 PM) Thomas, Ordonez, Carlos Lee, Alexei Ramirez, Carlos Quentin in 2008, Paul Konerko, Joe Crede, Aaron Rowand, Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome, Adam Dunn, AJ Pierzynski, etc. What?
  21. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 04:36 PM) I can think of 4 hall of famers. Thome, Griffey, Vizquel, Manny.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 04:34 PM) Lillibridge and Fukudome, for starters. You wanted Brent to be the starting SS after your often-proposed Alexei Ramirez trade. Ramirez is our one starter, along with Dunn, who could actually make the Tigers' starting line-up. Yet somehow you prefer to start someone who's proven he can't handle the position at the major league level in both ATL and Chicago. If Mitchell continues to play like he's capable of, he could easily figure into the line-up by August or September. Thompson is two years away. Saladino could also end up replacing any of the 3 infield positions. And you're forgetting what we could acquire for Floyd, Crain or Thornton (hello, Red Sox, need some bullpen help?). If Santiago's legit, then there's no reason to pay Matt his quasi-closer salary when we already have Ohman on the payroll. You are jumping to all kinds of conclusions if you think Dunn could make the Tigers starting lineup and Jared Mitchell will be anywhere near the big leagues by September. You're also misrepresenting my thoughts on Lillibridge at SS.
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 04:23 PM) Nothing when about 25 other big league teams wouldn't have a shot to beat the Tigers. It means you have to put yourself in the best possible position for 2013, 2014 and 2015. Unless they suffer major injuries to their pitching staff, nobody in our division will come within 10 games of them. The Tigers aren't going to win 100 games. They might get to 90, but I'd bet against that.
  24. QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 04:26 PM) This is such an important part of the equation and something I believe played a very large role in JR's dismissal of Ozzie instead of KW. The Sox rosters for nearly every season from 2006-2011 were stacked on paper. These were teams that were clear-cut favorites to win the Central and yet they came up woefully short most every year. A GMs job isn't to get the players to perform, set a solid line-up, make the correct in-game moves to promote victory....his job is to put a roster together capable of winning and I don't think there's any doubt that KW accomplished that each and every year. Ozzie turned out to be a horrible manager and, without question, was sabotaging games last season to prove his own, narcissistic version of the Sox failures would and should be pinned on KW. But just as you'd expect from someone who never finished school and, after 30 years in the US still can't speak English, he never understood that his masterplan would be so damn transparent. Good riddance. Stacked? How many Hall of Famers, All-Stars, Silver Sluggers were on those teams?
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2012 -> 04:13 PM) That you need to play and develop the multiple people you do have, especially the ones on the big league squad, even if it means losses They have no choice. Who are they going to bench these guys for if they are losing? And if they are losing it might be very well be because these guys are not the players the organization thinks they are.
