QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 11:57 PM) I feel like if she had earned the degrees and such when she was living as a man, none of those details would have ever emerged. None of the story would have made sense if the reporter didn't "reveal" the name/gender change and sharing this information early on would have completely altered the story, as it was being told -- a largely chronological account of his research on Yar Golf. Had he know she was transgendered from the beginning, it is quite likely IMO that he would not have done the digging on her credentials in the first place. He would have simply assumed she had earned those credentials under a different name. While we will never really know, it seems her gender identity was a significant explanatory part of her mental/emotional demise. Living most of her early life as a lie, which is how she would have felt as a man, could easily have led to a lifelong struggle with a fluid identity. She probably felt like Dr. V is the kind of person she could have been if only she had been able to have been born into the right body. Having yet another disappointment, the reaffirmation that she was not Dr. V, could have been too much. Maybe it was mostly unrelated. Who knows. FWIW, I was not surprised at all that Dr. V was "revealed" to be a biological man as I was reading the article. We have a super-secretive person who claims to have been deeply embedded into the military, also be a Vanderbilt, was writing unintelligible gobbledygook in email correspondence, is 6'3" with a deep voice ... let's not act like it was completely outside the realm of possibility until the reporter said so outright. If she had the degrees there would have been no story here other than the original puff piece that the author set out to write. The transgender stuff never gets found or at least mentioned.

The working for the DoD was a lie for at least the when. Her work history outside the DoD was also a lie.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 09:51 PM) Because the lies were found out. Again, are you saying reporters shouldn't report the truth if it will be damaging to the subject? edit: I liked how you phrased that: "pushed forward," as if this guy had an agenda to ruin the person from the start. Agreed. When you con people out of thousands of dollars and continue to try and do so your forfeit your right to any privacy

Bulls traded Teague. Thank the Lord we won't have to see him again in a Bulls uni although maybe bad for #teamtank. Bulls got something called Toko Sengelia in return.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 08:56 PM) A good number of people, me included, are quite repulsed about what it appears this Grantland writer did here. I read this before and passed it off as outrage for the sake of outrage. Some of the language could have been better but isn't transphobic when it's vital to her background in the story.

http://grantland.com/features/a-mysterious...golf-club-dr-v/ I don't even like golf much but I found this story to be great. What starts out as an infomercial for a golf club turns crazier...and crazier...and nd crazier. I won't really post more without spoiling it you'll just have to read it.

Sox down to 10 to 1 odds. The money was getting bet hard on the Sox to sign him. Let's hope the smart money knows.

Personally I loved the U's game pad and Wiis motion controllers. Their problem is with online which is for some reason years behind the other consoles and their failure to make the console a center of the room hub. Also branding. No one knows what the Wii U is. I predict we see a total re branding incoming. They still are far and away the most talented developers in the world. It was a weird choice not to push the system with their two biggest bankable titles Mario Kart and Smash Bros not out in the first 1.5 years.

Nintendo had a poor quarter for their home console and they are thinking about "a new way to go about business". On the bright side hopefully they don't have 150 million to throw at a certain Japanese pitcher. They may can their CEO 3DS was the top selling console of the holiday season and 2013.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 03:50 PM) Tanaka update: Apparently, 1 team that was considered a favorite completely BOMBED meeting w him/reps. Came in 'unprepared', 'unorganized' Ty Youngfelt- Pioneer press- https://mobile.twitter.com/TyYoungfelt/stat...977208458141696 Most people are speculating the Mariners. My guess would be the Dodgers that couldn't offer specifics until Kershaw was done. Doubt it was the Mariners since no other team should be better prepped for a pitch to a Japanese player than them and they got their pitch to toptalent down with the recent Can signing.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 01:06 PM) Which means the difference is "Kansas" and not the coach. I'm saying it's both. It doesn't have to be black and white. Kansas I imagine will struggle mightily if they higher the wrong guy compared to other top schools. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 01:24 AM) Again, if Self was the difference, why didn't get the same classes at UofI he is getting at Kansas? I never said he was the difference? You keep putting that in my mouth. -

I certainly don't think Kansas names sells itself more than Kentucky, UNC, Duke, UCLA, etc. But they can make that up with the right coach and Bill Self is tgat. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 11:55 PM) When you look at the history of Kansas basketball, it is more than just "ghost of hires". If it were that simple Bill Self would have been just as good, or better, than what he was at Ill. The history and the name of the school sell themselves which is a large reason why people go there. It is why kids to Kentucky and North Carolina. It is why everyone wants to be a Yankee or Cowboy or Celtic or Canadian. It is one of THE franchises in sports. The coach definitely adds to it yeah. But no I don't think Kansas in flyover country with no real natural recruiting grounds is going to sell itself without the right coach. Most of the other blue bloods can be backed up by being close to some major city and or having a terrific recruiting ground. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 09:50 PM) The last coach at Kansas to have a winning percentage of less than 65% was the guy who invented the game of basketball. True but they've made some great hires there too. I think it's somewhat like Nebraska football. You have to recruit out of state. You cant even recruit the surrounding states much. So don't hire the wrong guy because the program will struggle to sell itself. luckily for them they haven't done that. -

QUOTE (Boogua @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 10:26 PM) You never heard that McCants, Felton, and May picked UNC specifically to play for Doherty? If they had more years of eligibility I'm sure they would have considered transferring to FAU or SMU to play for him Since you brought up SMU they are landing plenty of kids they otherwise wouldn't because of the coach. Kids commit to coaches all the time I'd say -

Yeah I think Kansas would fall on very hard times with one bad hire. I kind of agree with Dick Allen. Nothing to do with Illinois but Lawrence and the state of Kansas seen miserable. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 09:42 PM) There is no reason not to give him a raise in that situation. That is a collosal screw up if that is how it went down. Well our former AD was an idiot. That said I think Self did just get an extension something like only a few weeks before iIRC so I guess he sort of had a right to be pissed. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 09:31 PM) Yeah, but he was the king in Champaign. Had he stayed, you add Charlie Villenueva to that title game team, and maybe they win it all. Many fans turned on him when he left. I don't think Kansas is an easier place to recruit for Self, maybe for others, than Champaign. I think if he coached Loyola they would be top 25. IMO, there had to be more. Maybe they had better toupee guys in KS. There was more. Basically he talked to KU about the opening. He then came back to our AD and more or less told him he talked to Kansas (in other words his hand was out looking for a raise). The AD got upset that he would even talk about another job so he told him to F off. The rest is history. That said I don't think Illinois 05 would have been as good under Self as they were under Weber -
QUOTE (dayan024 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 06:07 PM) Dan Hayes @DanHayesCSN 14m Per @BovadaLV, odds are 3/2 in favor of Yankees to sign Masahiro Tanaka. The Cubs are 7/1 & #WhiteSox are 18/1. LA, Sea also ahead of Cubs. Thanks. Put 5.50 down to win 100. Free cheese. They are also taking action on whether he will sign by the Jan 24th deadline. -175 for yes. Plus 125 for no.
