2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
fathom replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 08:44 PM) Hudson, Holmberg, and anything else for half a year of Dunn is still a major overpay. Don't forget that at the time, Dunn said he wouldn't agree to an extension with an AL team because he didn't want to become a full-time DH. It made a possible big trade for Dunn at that time even dumber. -
QUOTE (robinventura23 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 08:42 PM) So, does this means the Cubs are out of the running? I'm sure the Tribune will write tomorrow how the Cubs were Prince's first choice
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:42 PM) Well, I guess it's not all that surprising you think no one on the roster will improve from last year. Funny you say that, as I do think Morel will be much better and so will Dunn. However, I think the pitching staff will be much weaker overall and the division will be significantly better.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:41 PM) If this gets the soxfest crowd more riled up at KW, I'll call that a positive. Can someone wear a NY Giants jersey to rile him up?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:39 PM) And if there aren't good offers on the table, this deal doesn't suddenly mean we should accept bad offers. I'd rather have Thornton traded and get his salary off the books for peanuts instead of having him be a set-up man making a lot of money for a 80 win team at best. In my opinion, he was the only guy who was likely to be traded that I would have been fine with just a salary dump.
-
I still think after this year, they will try to trade Cabrera and not VMart.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:38 PM) If you don't want people to read statements that suggest you think the Tigers added one of the top 5 players in baseball, don't write that the Tigers added one of the top 5 players in baseball. Well, accept my apology I didn't specify "hitters"
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:34 PM) Your original statement was "How does adding one of the top five players in baseball not make the Tigers better". I like how rapidly you backed off onto hitters. Clearly I wasn't talking about pitchers, cause the first person I said was Pujols/Bautista obviously and would have mentioned Halladay, Lincecum, Kershaw, Verlander etc.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:31 PM) Yes he's an elite player. I won't dispute that. Currently he is an elite player. He's now being paid one of the top salaries in baseball though, and is being done so for such a long time that he's basically never allowed to age, otherwise he'll be a giant hole blown in the budget. And on that one, I was responding specifically to fathom's claim that he was one of the top 5 players in baseball, while I can think of multiple players in MLB who I'd rather spend $23 million on for the next couple seasons than him. Sure, a lot of people would pay Tulowitzki more money than Prince, but it doesn't mean that Tulo is a better hitter than Prince.
-
How come no one has said "this Tigers move just puts them in better position to contend with the Sox"
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 08:15 PM) In what world is Prince Fielder one of the top 5 players in all of baseball? Which hitters are considered better? Pujols obviously, and Bautista the last two years. I'm not buying into Kemp's 2011 season.

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:13 PM) Very true, but that's why I only bring that out to respond to the specific post PolishPrince made. That he "drove the organization into the ground." What's happened the last few years is weak GMing, not total destruction. The huge miss that could've been avoided with closer inspection was Peavy, Rios was the bad but decent gamble (though it paid off decently in Rios' 2010 campaign), and Dunn was the sure-fire total shocker. Also through the recent years KW has had good moves Danks/Floyd/Alexei/Sale/Dayan/CQ that he fails to get enough credit for, it's just that the two worst ones have been bad enough to obscure several nice smaller moves The beginning of the end of KW's reign as a good GM was the Swisher trade from the A's. Not only did it result in getting rid of Gio, but then after Swisher busted, you had to go spend a fortune on Rios the following year to play CF. If Swisher had panned out, the organization takes a totally different path. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 08:11 PM) This does not make the tigers a "3-4 year dominant team" any more than any other move they've made. I'm sure the freakout will make it seem that way immediately, but seriously, go look at the numbers. They're going to have something like $80 million tied up in 4 players through the end of 2014. Read that number again and think about that. The rest of their roster will have to earn less than the Marlins for that team to not lose a ton of money. And 3 of them effectively play 2 positions. How does adding one of the top 5 players in all of baseball not make the class of the division even better? It's not like that 80 million is tied up in bad players like it is with other teams (ie: White Sox).
-
I can't wait for people to say we need to keep Thornton around in order to try and shut down Prince. I don't think the Sox are the losers here, the real losers in this are the Royals. If the Tigers dominate for the next 3-4 years, then the Royals young studs are going to be too expensive to keep around.
-
QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 09:01 PM) I guess V Mart will be traded in 2013. I think it's more possible they trade Cabrera, maybe in a monster trade for Hanley Ramirez, etc.
-
Wow, kudos if true to the Tigers. Kinda fun to see Prince following in his dad's footsteps. I hate this for the Sox, but honestly, I'm not sure it matters that much for the next few years anyways.
-
QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 06:37 PM) I've seen exactly 0 nominated films, although I brought home "Midnight in Paris" and "Moneyball" from my library last night. I find it much more surprising that Jonah Hill got a best-supporting nod than Melissa McCarthy, who I thought was great in "Bridesmaids." Brad Pitt, too for that matter. Again, I haven't seen it yet, but I wouldn't think that acting the part of a baseball executive requires superior dramatic range or skill. I know I mentioned it earlier, but Jonah Hill was pretty great in Moneyball.
-
Jonah Hill is far and away the best part of Moneyball
-
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:21 PM) I've heard Humphries is just an asshole all together, I think it was here someone mentioned players of a college team begged their coach not to recruit him because he came off as that much of a prick. It was Keith Langford begging Roy Williams not to take Humphries at Kansas
-
Humphries was hated by others long before his marriage to Kim K.
-
I think I'm done with Alcatraz. The premise of the show was great, but honestly, I hate the format of a new bad guy ever week. I was expecting a much "smarter" show than this.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 11:43 PM) If the Sox suck this year, I hope KW is canned after the season. I mean he made a couple offseason deals, big deal. If this team makes no more moves, it on paper again is a contender. If the team sucks, it's on KW. Fire him if this team sucks. Now if he makes 3-4 more trades, I will change this post. Then he can't be judged on this season's crap product. The record this year means nothing, as the team is rebuilding. If all of the prospects Kenny traded for absolutely tank in the minors this year and all of the young guys stink at the major league level (Morel/Beckham/Viciedo), then he should be shown the door.
-
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 11:29 PM) Jerry's statement pretty much says that the Marlins were communicating with Ozzie back and forth during the season while he was still manager, which can be considered anywhere between tampering and a dick move. And once again proves that Ozzie wasn't 100% focused with on the field stuff, which is ironic because Cowley ripped on Cooper for being worried about his future as well. I'm just happy one of the two between Ozzie and KW is gone, and now it's time for KW to step up to the plate and improve the team the next few years. If not, you better believe he'll be gone in a few years.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 04:50 AM) He led by example. The smart ones copied his style of working quickly and ignored the style of Edwin (snail's pace) Jackson. Mark had the balls to take the ball and deliver it quickly. It was always on his terms. Working fast means absolutely nothing. The only thing anyone gives it credit for is keeping the defense on its toes. However, care to explain how Buerhle led the team in unearned runs last year?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 01:17 AM) I guess that's what happens when he can't use his hand or play football for a few months. If this was The Hills, Spencer Pratt would say it's not Cutler's baby and it's actually Aaron Rodgers'.
