Halladay Superthread
QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 11:14 PM) If that's what they are after then yes I agree he will stay a Jay....unless someone really gets desperate... I think the only team with a real chance is the Phillies.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 11:12 PM) For us that's about Danks, Hudson, Dex Carter, and Nevin Griffith. With maybe an Ely and Shirek thrown in near the back. F-Mart is a much bigger prospect than Danks, and Parnell's at least shown some big league success.

QUOTE (beautox @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 12:08 AM) Mets just rejected a trade for Roy Halladay proposed by the jays; per MLBN Halladay for F-mart, Tejada, Parnell, Neise Yeah, that goes to show you they're looking for the world for Halladay.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 04:14 AM) As I said earlier, I guess I am going to let the Sox trading/draft history speak for me on this one, and have some trust they know what they were getting with Pena. Now, if this is another MacDougal trade, we got a problem. They need to work on Pena's delivery. He doesn't seem to have very good balance at the top of his delivery, and if they can fix that, he might be able to get more pinpoint with his pitches.

Ozzie and his Usage of Aaron Poreda.
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 02:11 AM) Why doesn't Ozzie get credit when we win, but only blame for losing that 5-1 lead to the Cubs, to the Pirates (Jenks isn't at fault either) or failing to take 3/5 against the Tigers, because Ozzie apparently is the home plate umpire, too. I wouldn't bring up that Tigers series, as Ozzie was awful during it.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 02:42 AM) I'd love to see this argument. Halladay's 2007 wasn't anything special

For the price the Orioles got Cla Meredith, I would have much preferred him and his ability to get ground balls over Pena.

Pena has good stuff, but he doesn't seem to fool many hitters.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 08:32 PM) Just checking in on the game. Jose musta stunk today. Absolutely, Izturis was our best player today.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 09:19 PM) Yea, unfortanatley we don't really have other options. However, I did hear there was a Freddy sighting in the clubhouse today. . . That explains it...everyone's stoned today

When's the last time Beckham had an errorless series?

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 09:14 PM) Guthrie came into this game 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA against us lifetime. Where did he find this magic all of a sudden? I'm pretty sure CQ owned him last year. Our hitters look like they had a very long night last night on the town. Very sluggish.

7/18 games
It's simple with Swisher. Some teams value OBP more than batting average. We traded him to one of those teams, but unfortunately got nothing in return. The lack of depth the trade gave us really hurt us earlier in the year, and who's to say it's not hurting us in trying to make trades now (by having more to offer Blue Jays, etc.).

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 08:12 PM) He should probably be off the roster once Colon comes back... Colon will be back next Friday (for the DH). I'm not a fan of calling up someone you're not sure about for such a big game, but whatever.

Let me ask this question: does anyone on here think Poreda should actually be in the majors right now? If no one objects, can we just talk about more fun things like Quentin returning and the invention of the peep hole video camera?

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 08:00 PM) There is no excuse for Wise being on this team over Fields. Field can (arguably) play 3b, 1b, and Lf. Wise can play the OF, can't hit, or field, and is not a former #1 of the organization. Fields can't play LF!

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 07:59 PM) This team always seems to mail it in when they've won the series. Every interview I hear, players are out to "win series". Yeah, we get it, but you should sweep the Orioles when they're the worst road team in the AL and have a pitcher on the mound with a ERA above 5. That would be the vintage Paul Konerko philosophy. Hard to argue with it though, but with our schedule in the 2nd half, we can't have too many of these meltdowns vs below .500 teams.

Yankees took the lead, 2-1. It's pretty fun rooting for them.

QUOTE (Friend of Nordhagen @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 07:57 PM) And we'll see Wise getting time behind Konerko at first. LOL. Nix or Toby Hall

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 07:56 PM) If the Yanks help us out today we are still 1.5 games back which is an awesome way to start the 2nd half. Call me Peter Possitive but were still in great shape going forward. Yeah Getz needs to improve his baseball IQ, Alexie needs to stop his double clutch and Beckham needs to continue to bend it. But lets face it, we have 3 infielders who are playing at their respective positions for the first time at the MLB level. The 3 of them are on the learning curve together which is very rare. With CQ being out and for us to be where were at is amazing. If KW could pull a rabbit out of his hat and bring us a Halladay type w/o giving up the farm its our division to win. I agree with everything but the last sentence. It's not like he's going to be able to fleece the Blue Jays.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 07:56 PM) He's a one pitch pitcher with no command, and that one pitch, is apparently only a slightly above average 92 mph fastball. He looks like a future loogy to me. He'll be traded by next April, that's my prediction.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 07:55 PM) I really do believe that Colon will replace Poreda, and CQ will replace BA. BA can't be sent down with Ozzie saying Quentin will be replaced for defensive reasons. I have a feeling it will be Fields that is sent down.

QUOTE (Friend of Nordhagen @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 08:53 PM) We're now going on nearly 4 years without a major league-caliber starting center fielder. But I am confident that one of these days -- and maybe even before 2017 -- Kenny Williams will aggressively fill that spot. (Provided that, you know, "the market" will make that possible.) We'll likely have to go through the growing pains with Jordan Danks out there soon, and I can't wait to see people freak out when he strikes out in 30 pct of his ABs while showing little power.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 08:53 PM) The two walks and now 8 in 11 innings are exactly why he should be in the bullpen. He wouldn't last 4 innings regularly as a starter until he figures something else out. And it's not like he's just missing the corners.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 08:51 PM) So Ozzie is an idiot for not using Poreda and an idiot for using him. This was the exact opportunity I was talking about in a different thread where Poreda would have an opportunity to earn Ozzie's trust. Sorry, getting guys out in AA is a lot different than getting them out in the majors. In fact, Poreda would have an ugly ERA if he were in the position a lot of people want him to be in, that being in the rotation. He had a chance today and walked both guys he faced. I'm all for ripping Ozzie setting guys up to fail, but 2 batters 2 walks, that's on Poreda. He should have never been promoted. I know for a fact that Beckham was promoted as a power struggle between KW and Ozzie, but I have no idea why Poreda was promoted. If anything, the stint in the majors has hurt his trade value while potentially hurting his development. All you had to do is look at his walk numbers and pitches per innings in the minors to see that he wouldn't cut it up here.
