QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 08:18 PM) Score? Notice how Hawk has that same tone in his voice that he's had the past 4 Septembers? He's a company man, so he may not say it, but he's also a former player, so we can all guess what he's thinking. I pray that we don't completely choke and miss the playoffs. However, if we do, Hawk is going to make a complete fool out of himself, and have excuse after excuse.

QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 08:17 PM) The same thing happened last week against Seattle. I feel he left him in one inning too long. What happened? Seattle tied it up. Ozzie usually wants his starters to get the victory, but most of the time it backfires and it ends up putting them in a deep hole. When you're struggling like we are, you need all the help you can get from your manager. Did Ozzie really think that this lineup today was going to score a lot of runs? Did Ozzie really think that after Duque allows 4 straight base runners to start the 6th inning, he should leave Duque in for another batter? All I know is that I'm happy the new rules are in place, or else this would have gotten really, really ugly.

I'll give Ozzie this: In games where he manages poorly, he goes all out to manage poorly. This game, and the Angels debacle with Timo at first and using Walker in a crucial situation were sure dandies.

Our lead is down to 6.5 games.
QUOTE(AirScott @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 08:08 PM) like I've said, we didn't have Podsednik in those games. he comes back, goes 0-5 and we lose, then goes 3-5 and we win, and currently is not playing and we're losing. it's more of an unfortunate time to play those playoff-caliber teams. This Rangers team we're about to lose 3 out of 4 to had just pathetic starting pitching. There's no excuses for losing 3 out of 4 to them.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 08:09 PM) This resting of the starters in large amounts is getting to complete joke level. Manuel only did it once a week. Ozzie does it like 2 to 3 times a week. What's Ozzie doing, resting our starters for the stretch run? Well, last time I looked, these games right now are as important as any game in September. How many times can we basically play a game with 6 starters and 3 benchers? You know we're doing the same thing Monday in Boston. I guarantee you that Boston will have their A squad playing.

BTW, before anyone says that we were saving our bullpen by letting Duque get knocked around, tomorrow is September 1st. We can assure ourself we'll have available arms if needed. I just can't the attitude I see by our manager.

Well, I went to the car to listen to the 6th inning...and all I have to say is Ozzie proves once again he's the worst in-game manager in baseball. It's fine Duque started the 6th, but once Young hit that homer, take him out of the f'n game. Against the Rangers, we actually have the chance to come back in a one run ballgame. However, Ozzie NEVER, EVER plays to try to keep the deficit close in situations like this. He'd rather let our starting pitcher throw 110 pitches than to try and get some damage control. For a good starting rotation, we sure do have a lot of games where our starters allow like 6 or 7 runs. Maybe, just maybe Ozzie...you should pull them before all that damage is done.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 07:24 PM) you ARE aware that uribe, harris, timo and ozuna were the only players to manufacture a rally and fundamentally get us a run. Yes, they helped contribute ONE run. How sad is it that we're content with one run and 2 hits thru 5 innings. Rock...I'm not saying you're wrong. It's just that it's another game of the whole lineup not showing up.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 07:18 PM) If the Sox were to make a deal for Walker, is there any need to keep Blum? He's just not very good. At all. Back-up 3rd baseman. With Crede injured, we need as many 3b as possible.

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 06:59 PM) I thought someone said he sucked in the 5 hole. Yeah, like I just said, I really thought he had been struggling higher up in the order. I know I wasn't the only one on here that thought he had been struggling higher up in the order. I always liked him batting after Dye in the order, but it doesn't seem like we're going to see any big changes to our lineup. Why not try Dye in the 3 spot?

I can't wait for AJP to be back in the 6 or 7 position in the lineup. Does anyone have a stat comparision of AJP in the 1-5 spot compared to lower in the order?

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 06:51 PM) Good thing we're playing for one run in this stadium. With this bottom of the order, it's probably the right decision.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 06:35 PM) 1st runner stranded. The pull machine is on full flex today. Maybe if we work out Blalock at third he wont hit home runs. Did Blalock rob someone of a hit or something? Stuck at work, and you guys are all I have to fill in the blanks. Thanks for everything.

I have a feeling we're going to be hearing more Hawk rants against the media if the Sox don't make a trade to help this offense. Instead of where would he play, it's going to be "where would he have played?"

QUOTE(infohawk @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 06:29 PM) Guys, I'm going to suggest a contrary view of today's line-up. If the Sox were fighting for their playoff lives, every starter would probably be playing. Of course Ozzie hopes to win this game, but he may also recognize that a 5-5 road trip that included Minnesota and a good-hitting Ranger team is pretty good. All you can hope for is to play .500 on the road. As a former player who has been through the grind of many a season, Ozzie knows what the stretch run is like. Resting his players like this may be an expression of confidence and that he believes the most important thing is to make sure everyone is rested and ready to go come October. Teams like the Indians, Yankees, A's and Angels probably don't have the luxury of resting players because of the tight wild card race. Lack of rest may cause them to stumble a bit down the stretch. Ozzie expected more than a .500 road trip. After going 4-1 in the first 5 games of this trip, I guarantee you he would have been disappointed to know they'd possibly lose 4 of the next 5 games. There's no excuse not to win this series against the Rangers, as they have bad pitching to start, and we missed their two best starters.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 06:22 PM) Farmio is talking about getting a new teamate tomorrow for the sox that can help them win. And he isnt talking about the september callups. Walker Really, what did he have to say?

This is one of those games, like the Yankees games at the Cell, where you look at the lineups and ask "how the hell are the Sox supposed to win the game?" And before anyone tells me to stop following the game if I think they'll lose, I still always hold out hope that we can pull out the victory. I just think that on August 31st with a 7 game lead, you don't field an absolute B lineup like this. I understand benching Pods or Everett, but not both of them along with Iguchi.

**Official 8/31/05 Game Thread**
The big problem I have with this awful lineup today is that we're likely going to use an awful lineup next Monday in Boston. I'm just not a fan of giving less than your best in terms of talent twice in six games. Also, if I remember correctly, Ozzie used a pretty poor lineup on Sunday in Seattle also.

QUOTE(CYGarland @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 06:06 PM) If we blow this lead down the stretch, I think you can point to games like this where we seem to rest 1/2 the lineup at the same time. What are we going to do, bench Iguchi every other day if he continues to struggle? Even Iguchi on his worst days is a bigger offensive contributor than Willie is. Please.....will the Todd Walker rumors be true!

QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 06:02 PM) fathom... Willie is this teams MVP. Seriously... I think we'll be OK today. Willie hasn't done a thing to deserve being on this team this season. I hate to sound like others, but this is the type of game where it would have been better to have Gload on the team, and put him at 1b, and Blum at 3b...with Ozuna at 2b. That gives you a much better offensive player in that spot.
