  1. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 08:09 AM) they are gunna be tough this year. theyre better than last yr and we werent that great against them. and it looks like grenkie is pitching the way everyone thought he would. hes always been tough on the sox anyways. their top 3 are going to be pretty good all year i think but i dont think thats going to be enough. The Sox were 12-6 vs the Royals last season that's a .667 W% or 17% of their total wins for the season. It's strange, for whatever reason people have this feeling that the Sox have struggled with the Royals in recent years but in actuality over the past 7 or so seasons the Sox have absolutely dominated the Kansas City.
  2. QUOTE (Felix @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 08:02 PM) Shoeless Joe. It's incredibly close, but I give the edge to Joe (slightly). Seriously? Joe Jackson only spent 4 full seasons with the Sox while Frank spent his 13 or so dominating the steroid era.
  3. QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 04:13 PM) I was never a fan of his attitude. I always thought of him as more a "me" player. Which is a horrible misconception.
  4. QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 04:01 PM) Rumormongering here... Thome might have his option declined so that Thomas can retire as a Sox and DH. Um no. Both Thome and Thomas have vesting options which at least Frank will undoubtedly reach (only 328 more PA to go) and even if he doesn't reach it then the Sox will be signing a 41 year old who failed to reach 350 or so PA in the year previous to replace their .950-1.000 OPS designated hitter (Thome) which strikes me as a bad idea. Frank will be playing for the Blue Jays next year.
  5. His statue should go up on opening day the year after he retires.
  6. UPDATED for 04.14.08, 1:25pm CT - Removed Carlos Vasquez, Added the 2008 salaries for ALL 27 players on the active roster, updated the "Actual Payroll" number
  7. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 11:35 AM) If all you're going to do is use Frowens as a PR then why bring him up ? Ramirez is just as fast or nearly as fast and hasn't had lingering Pods-like injuries this spring. You know he shaved his head like a week into spring training right?
  8. I'd be happy if I never have to read Owens' name in the starting lineup again. As a late inning pinch runner in place of Alexei Ramirez? Sure. If Jerry's with the big club however, I can't picture him not getting about 2 starts a week (could just be my paranoia manifesting itself) which is definitely not something I want to see.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 08:57 AM) I hope Quentin gets real hot the next week or so. The Sox have only attempted 1 stolen base in 10 games. I have a feeling Ozzie is dying for a reason to insert Owens after a few rehab games. I say make him a pinch runner. Getting guys on base, then hitting homers works pretty well. Could Ozzie's use of Carlos Quentin in the leadoff spot -- as opposed to Ozuna or Ramirez -- be a sign of a total shift in leadoff-man philosophy for Ozzie Guillen? Has he finally come around to the theory that OBP > Speed at the top? Or am I just being overly optimistic?
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 12, 2008 -> 11:52 AM) Random question - what teams have a better defensive infield than the Sox this year? I have to think there are a few, but, I can't think of them. The Mariners definitely have a comparable left side of the infield with Beltre and Betancourt but Lopez and Sexson are liabilities on the right side. The Phillies have a great left side with Feliz and Rollins, Utley's supposed to be pretty damn good as well.
  11. Miggy just looks pathetic right now.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 12, 2008 -> 11:08 AM) I think Sheffield had 22 steals last year. He did. For a 39 year old man he's an incredible baserunner.
  13. God I love Carlos Quentin. I hope I never have to see Jerry Owens again.
  14. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Apr 12, 2008 -> 11:02 AM) Why the f*** is this game not on the Extra Innings package? I'm starting to think this package isn't even worth having if they're only gonna show half the f***ing games. Fox Sports hates you.
  15. QUOTE (Linnwood @ Apr 12, 2008 -> 10:30 AM) Is this game backed-out for out-of-market? ExtraInnings doesn't list it. Yep, any Saturday game before 6pm or so will be blacked out on Extra Innings because Fox sports hates baseball fans.
  16. Swish, CF Cabrera, SS Thome, DH Konerko, 1B Dye, RF Pierzynski, C Quentin, LF Crede, 3B Uribe, 2B
  17. The game is on CSN+ which in the past would mean no HD feed but for anyone with Comcast they'll be showing the game live in HD on Mojo (174).
  18. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 02:50 PM) Aramis Ramirez has 3 years left on his deal and is a better player than Joe Crede.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 12:29 AM) I feel sorry for him. That said do any of you dislike ultra tall pitchers as much as I do? Tom Seaver was what, 5-11? With the exception of Randy Johnson, do you like tall pitchers? I'd say Chris Young is making a nice career for himself at 6'10".
  20. Andy Sisco isn't going to play in the majors this year, therefore he will not earn a year of service time so at the start of the 2009 campaign he'll still be a year short of arbitration. The issue Balta is bringing up is his lack of minor league options for the 2009 season. At the start of the 2009 season if Andy is still recovering and unable to pitch (very likely) the Sox could probably just outright him to A/AA/AAA (he should pass right through waivers) then place him on the minor league disabled list. If that's not allowed then he can start the year with the big club on the 60 day DL and when he's ready to pitch again he can be outrighted to A/AA/AAA (he'd most likely pass through waivers in this scenario as well) and take it from there. The only real problem with having a major league player who's out of options is if you want to send him down he has to be outrighted off the 40 man roster which requires passing through waivers, most decent players will not make it through all 29 teams, a guy who's unable to pitch however should pass right through.
  21. The (now) unwritten rules of Game Thread starting sate a game thread can not be created until the day of the game (AKA 12am CT) unless of course you have winner's rights. I guess I'm going to have to dig up the old thread.
  22. QUOTE (SoxWS05 @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 01:50 PM) You may be a Sox fan but deep down inside you were hoping Crede would fail, so your man-crush Fields could come up. I can't believe you said it would be moronic to trade Fields for Harden or Lincecum! These players are easily double the value of Fields. I expected to be called a moron for even suggesting Fields is worth the value of Lincecum or Harden. Harden would be an injury risk, but he's dominant. Lincecum is just plain filthy. If we got either we would be contenders for real. Guess what? The Sox have money and no one player is going to "suck payroll flexibility" as you put it. YOU think before you post son. Fields for Harden would be a complete disaster. Sure Harden is dominant in about 4 of the 6 starts he makes each year but I fail to see how about 24 innings of excellent pitching from a starter over a 162 game season is worth removing Fields from the organization.
  23. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 11:31 AM) I am totally in manlove with this team right now. My manlove for Carlos Quentin is bordering on infatuation.
  24. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 10:32 PM) Damn, did you make that sig? It's frickin' sweet. Yeah, just made it today.
