The Graduate; another movie that isn't laugh out loud funny but is a good film that happens to be categorized as a comedy.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 10:57 AM) Cough...Konerko for Kemp, Swisher moves to 1B, Kemp plays CF. That really makes no sense from the Dodgers' perspective. I know Ned Colletti has a history of favoring vets over youth but James Loney might be a more productive player than Paul Konerko right now at the age of 24 and Matt Kemp should be untouchable (and likely is.)

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 07:19 PM) From that list, I don't feel that Andy Pettitte, Kenny Rogers, Nomar Garciaparra, Kenny Lofton, or David Wells have the numbers. And then there's the juiced ones. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 07:26 PM) Lofton is there. He probably won't get in on the first ballot but by year 2 or 3 he'll get in. A career ~.300 hitter, ~.370 OBP, ~.800 OPS (from a leadoff man), 620+ SB, ~80% SB%, nearly 2500 hits, 6 All Star game appearances and 4 gold gloves. That's a hall of famer. I'll agree with you on the rest though, I was just trying to name as many very good old players in the final year of their contracts as I could off the top of my head. QUOTE (max power @ Apr 22, 2008 -> 07:57 AM) Wait you think rogers is a hall of famer? I don't, definitely not. Has there ever been a pitcher with a career ERA over 4 in the hall?

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 10:48 PM) I actually think Dr. Strangelove is pretty darn funny in an absurd kind of way. Someone mentioned Fargo and I considered it for my list but it wasn't really that funny...way too dark, but definitely an excellent movie. For the record, since I'll be exposed anyway, Dr. Strangelove was #1 on my list. I can't believe a few movies that I forgot about, namely Home Alone, Dumb and Dumber and The Pink Panther. Oh well. None would have been number one but they probably would have made the list, pushing out my last 3. I also felt stupid to find out that my list only had 19 movies. I think I must have been tired. Is Dr Strangelove seriously the "funniest" movie you've ever seen or is it just the best movie you've ever seen that's categorized as a comedy?
-
QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 08:25 PM) Forrest Gump as one of the funniest movies...interesting... I hope I don't see Fargo as a "dark comedy" on the list. Both are amazingly great movies, but neither are in my top 50 of make-me-laugh funny movies, as I prefer more pure comedies. And the first half or so of Superbad was funnier than all of Knocked Up, which dragged. That's exactly how I feel about 2 Peter Sellers movies, Dr. Strangelove and Being There. Both are excellent films but neither has me laughing uncontrollably (especially Being There) yet they always appear on these "funniest movies" lists. George C. Scott is historical in Strangelove but the storyline isn't particularly humorous in and of itself.

One thing that could hurt Frank if he doesn't play another game is the possible hall of fame ballot of 2014. As of right now the 2013 ballot is going to be ridiculous but due to steroid use a few of those guys will likely be on the ballot in 2014 as well. (the players in bold will almost definitely go in on the first ballot) 2013: Sosa, Clemens, Bonds, Piazza, Lofton, Biggio, Wells 2014: Thomas, Glavine?, Maddux?, Pettitte?, Johnson?, Hoffman?, Kent?, Mussina?, Rogers?, Garciaparra?

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 12:32 PM) What's going to be available on the 08/09 FA market for SS? You're right, the Sox have NOTHING here. Ramirez is not going to be ready (if ever), Uribe should not be starting anywhere near a good team, and OCab is not the long term answer and the Sox would be best served letting him walk and getting the sandwich pick. It's going to be another rough offseason trying to figure out the SS spot. After this year you're looking at Furcal, Eckstein and maybe Renteria ($11M TO for '09) at short and Mark Ellis at 2B. After the '09 season Bobby Crosby, Khalil Greene, Miguel Tejada and probably Jack Wilson ($8.4M TO) will be Free agents at SS and at 2B DeRosa, Polanco, Roberts, Scutaro, Iwamura ($4.25M TO) and maybe Freddy Sanchez ($8M TO.) Though a few of these guys could get new deals by then (Greene and Roberts being prime candidates to get new contracts before they hit the market.)

The Sox have hit 25 HR and allowed 5 the next best ratio in the AL is Texas with 19 hit and 12 allowed. Another encouraging stat is BBs. The Sox have allowed the second fewest free passes in the AL with 57 (Min - 37) and have drawn the 4th most with 77 (Tor - 86 also OAK and DET are just ahead)

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 10:28 AM) Thome is hitting barely .200, is he done? Seriously, Uribe, we can assume he won't get much better. Tadahito, on the other hand, has shown himself to be a quality hitter in the past. Iguchi was also brutal in the field near the end of tenure with the White Sox and KW/Ozzie (like it or not) seem to really like Richar, re-signing Iguchi would only have blocked him.

Tad isn't fairing to well in San Diego: .213/.298/.253/.551 in 75 ABs w/ only 3 XBH (all doubles.)

QUOTE (RME JICO @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 05:39 PM) Yeah, looking back I can't recall the last time the Royals even won the season series vs us. Ironically enough it was the same year the Sox won the division, 2000. KC was 7-5 against us that year. It's strange since the AL Central was formed in 1994 the Sox have only lost the season series to the Royals twice and in both of those seasons the Sox went on to win the division. ('94 & '00) The Sox were 13-5 vs the Royals in 2005.

QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 06:31 PM) I'm in the camp of "Gold Gloves are Media-hyped Bulls***." Crede and Uribe both (also Rowand), deserved a shot at a Gold Glove a few times since 2004; but, Eric Chavez and Derek Jeter (also Torii Hunter) were cemented in there by the writers because they were "name" guys. Well Chavez is a stud at the hot corner when he's capable of walking so I have no real beef there and from what I've seen Adrian Beltre as probably been the best defensive 3B in the AL since '05 so perhaps he has a gripe. But yeah Torii Hunter played 93 games in CF in '05 and still won a GG and Derek Jeter is just a joke in general.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 06:30 PM) Derek Jeter has some gold gloves too, and he's terrible defensively. *cough*palmeiro*cough*

QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 05:45 PM) Didn't we sign Thome forst, then release Frank? That would make them former team mates. Pass me the trophy . . . Actually Frank Thomas' contract was bought out and he was granted free agency 21 days before Jim Thome was acquired so you win nothing.

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 11:31 PM) he's in AA but he's a veteran pitcher as far as MLB experience is concerned, the sox could bring him up from AA if they wanted to 3 major league innings makes you a veteran now? He's a 23 year old pitcher that the Sox lost in the Rule V draft, the A's decided it wasn't worth keeping him on the big club all season so they returned him to the Sox for $25,000. He won't even sniff Chicago this season.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 03:23 PM) Right. Think if they had given Baldelli this kind of deal when he was a young stud. They sort of did. Longoria got 6 years guaranteed with 3 option years, Baldelli got 3 years guaranteed with 3 option years, Crawford got 4 years guaranteed and 2 option years. Crawford: '05 (pre arb): $500K + $500K signing bonus '06 (arb): $2.5M '07 (arb): $4M '08 (arb): $5.25M '09 (fa): $8.25M TO / $2.5M BO '10 (fa): $10M TO / $1.25M BO (option could reach $11.5M) Guaranteed: 4 years, $15.25M (1 pre arb, 3 arb) Possible: 6 years, $32.5M Baldelli: '06 (pre arb): $2M '07 (arb): $750K (could increase to $2.5M) '08 (arb): $2.25M (could increase to $4.5M) '09 (arb): $6M TO / $4M BO '10 (fa): $8M TO / $2M BO ('10 and '11 TO must be exercised together) '11 (fa): $9M TO Guaranteed: 3 years, $9M (1 pre arb, 2 arb) Possible: 6 years, $32M Longoria: '07 (pre arb): $500K '08 (pre arb): $550K '09 (pre arb): $950K '10 (arb): $2M ($2.5M if he's arb eligible) '11 (arb): $4.5M '12 (arb): $6M '13 (fa): $7.5M TO / $3M BO '14 (fa): $11M TO / $1M BO ('14 and '15 TO must be exercised together) '15 (fa): $11.5M TO (could increase to $14M) Guaranteed: 6 years, $17.5M/18M (3 pre arb, 3 arb) Possible: 9 years, $47.5M It's certainly the longest deal and most guaranteed money they've ever given to a young player but it's not an entirely new concept to the Rays.

Eric Collins sitting in for Stoney in Tampa series

Didn't he do the "play by play" for that secondary audio thingy the Sox tried to do a few years back? -
QUOTE (WCSox @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) "You simply root against them. I've said it all winter, they talk about the team winning the division, and my comment is that they won't win it because at the end of the day, they still are the Chicago Cubs, and they will figure out a way to screw this whole thing up." pwned! JUST LIKE LAST YEAR, MARTY!!! oh wait

Thank you Carlos Quentin.

Stone believes Roberts will be still be traded

QUOTE (max power @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) I don't want it to happen and lucky for me, it won't. I'd rather see us go at it next year with fields and richar, saving the money that would be spent on crede to make a more substantial splash in the free agent market. If they traded fields for a half season of roberts it would be really stupid. I can't believe stone hinted at that. Roberts is signed for next season as well. -
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 08:09 AM) they are gunna be tough this year. theyre better than last yr and we werent that great against them. and it looks like grenkie is pitching the way everyone thought he would. hes always been tough on the sox anyways. their top 3 are going to be pretty good all year i think but i dont think thats going to be enough. The Sox were 12-6 vs the Royals last season that's a .667 W% or 17% of their total wins for the season. It's strange, for whatever reason people have this feeling that the Sox have struggled with the Royals in recent years but in actuality over the past 7 or so seasons the Sox have absolutely dominated the Kansas City.
