  1. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 12:10 PM) Dude! This is the second time you've questioned this quote in different threads from what I've see. You just can't be serious at this point.
  2. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 02:18 PM) I'm not a Willis fan at all. He's way too erratic and streaky for my liking, plus his delivery looks like a Tommy John surgery waiting to happen. He walks way too many guys and doesn't strike out a whole lot of them, which is generally a recipe for disaster. His WHIP is 1.42 this year. I don't see a whole lot of 2005-Dontrelle in his future. He looks like the second coming of Hideo Nomo to me. Nomo is by far the best comparison I've ever seen, that's the one I always love to use. 1 great year, another pretty good year after that about 5 or so ok years and then just utter crap. I really see Dontrelle going down this road.
  3. Ugh, I'm completely torn when it comes to Willis. I think he'll be pretty damn bad about 3 years from now but he probably would dominate the AL for the rest of this season, throwing elbows and knees at people. I would NEVER, NEVER trade McCarthy for Willis, that would be a huge mistake and I just can't see a deal getting done without including McCarthy. If it were Fields + spects I'd jump all over that and then dump Freddy on someone for a piece as well. QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 01:42 PM) Wow, under the radar is right. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to throw in Fields, Sweeney, or Vazquez. Not all three, but any of those guys could be a part of the trade. If it were to go down. Vazquez would nearly double their payroll, they have NO use for him.
  4. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 12:59 PM) I'll rephrase: excessive and senseless criticism. I think everyone's been worthy of some criticism for somethings at some point or another. What I meant was, things like, "This guy freaking sucks," "Trade him," etc. etc. Everyone's been subject to unnecessarily, and undeservedly, harsh words, IMO. Most of those are brief reactionary posts from people who are prone to that sort of thing. I really don't think there have been much substantial conversation that carried on in that light. That sort of thing was what you generally see in say the game thread when Javy Vazquez gives up a grandslam to Craig Monroe in the 6th inning of a big game, you'll see basically the same people everytime (it's a small group of them) freaking out completely and calling for Javy to be DFA'd. Basically I see it as being a small group who will post the ridiculous crap in the heat of the moment.
  5. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 12:51 PM) I prefer a fan who can worry without spiffting his pants. Some guys do it real well. Most? Not so much. I am surprised that Jose Contreras never had a thread of, "WHY DOES HE SUCK" "WHAT'S WRONG WITH HIM LOL!" "fish HIM, LOL!!" but everyone -- EVERYONE -- else has faced serious criticisms, and unwarranted criticisms. That's not entirely relevant, just something that came to my mind. Who has faced unwarranted criticism around here, other than maybe Thome, which is completely ridiculous?
  6. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 10:44 PM) Jeff Brantley, considering his run of stupidity, said there should be no doubt that Schilling is the one American League pitcher that should be selected if you need to win a game. Isn't this the same guy who said Papelbon is the player he'd want on his team most, over Pujols? When they originally posed the question, which pitcher would you most want pitching in the big game for you down the stretch I knew immediately that Brantley would choose Schilling, it's sickening how predictable he is. The Choices were (in order of how the voting should go): Johan Santana Roy Halladay Jose Contreras Curt Schilling Mike Mussina
  7. QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 05:57 PM) You just compared Crazy Carl and his .650 OPS to Paul Konerko and his .1000 OPS? Booooo stupid comparisons. Hurray Jim Thome and his 31 HR. How do you confuse Jim Thome with Paul Konerko? Shame on you. QUOTE(lord chas @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 06:05 PM) i love thome but hes the last guy i want to see up with a runner on third with less than two outs. too many strikeouts That is just ridiculous. This season with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs Jim Thome is batting .450 that's right .450! + a .448 OBP, 4 HR, 24 RBI and a 1.548 OPS! He should be the first guy you want out there in such a situation.
  8. Just an FYI, the Twins are now closer to the Sox (4 GB) than the Sox are to the Tigers (5.5 GB)
  9. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 05:40 PM) I didn't know what he was referring too and I still don't. Was he referencing my post or something else? I agree that we don't/didn't need a loss. I am not criticizing him for his comments I was asking a question to clarify them. Thanks! He was simply referencing the original post in the thread.
  10. The Sox are 2-7 in their last 9 FWIW.
  11. QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 04:46 PM) the whole season it's been about how were still better than the Tigers, how were the defending world champs ect... well this past stretch, and especially today should be a big slap in the face to the team that they aren't Mr. Incredible I hate to think it, but I get the feeling from our team (pitchers mostly) that the don't care as much as last year, and they just think they can cruise along right back to the world series Ken Harrelson kept saying how the series was good for the psyche of the Tigers, well now their riding on the top of the world after winning the series, and the Sox are trailing behind now that we've gotten a taste of losing, we should start to realize that we need to step it up to keep competing in the AL so I think this loss will actually help our team get back together and hit a stride for the rest of the year Mr. Rongey! Why I had no idea you posted here.
  12. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 04:54 PM) (sure they wouldn't give us Molina?). They're 6 games out of the division and WC races, they're not going to trade their starting catcher. Plus he's got about $8M left on his contract which runs through next year, that would be insane for a backup catcher.
  13. He's not going to be much of an offensive upgrade over Widger for anyone thinking otherwise.
  14. Rock, If you know nothing about the IL then how can you make claims like these? There's a reason why the Knights are kicking everyone's ass this season and Heath Phillips, Charlie Heager, Chad Durbin, Josh Phelps and Kevin Witt are all dominating the International League.
  15. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 04:34 PM) Waiting for what exactly? huh? You lost me there. Are you saying Borchard put up better numbers in his minor league days? Because his OBP and OPS never touched what Fields has done so far this year, its a fact. Ugh - Charlotte is a hitters park - The IL is incredibly weak this season. - You are only looking at a half a season of offensive production. - You are looking to compare this half a season to someone elses full season. - You only want to compare AAA numbers to AAA numbers. - You only want to compare players who have done this in their first 3 years in the minors. - You want to ignore all past and future performances while only focusing on a single season. - How exactly does any of this make sense?
  16. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 04:28 PM) Bad example. Borchard never raked in AAA like Fields. His best year was in AA ball. You mean AAA Charlotte which is a huge hitters park and is currently in the incredibly weak IL? So basically what you're doing is trying to find a prospect who had a high batting average and hit a bunch of homeruns in AAA for one season but it has to be one of his first few seasons while ignoring all past and future performance?
  17. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 04:17 PM) So crede's 6th season in the minors? .312 .359 .571 Fields 2nd season .325 .402 .548 I would say Fields is a little ahead of Joe's curve. All you're doing is going on 1 year, 1 YEAR! It's impossible to compare anyone that way. Take a look at Borchard's '01 & '02 numbers, his 1st and 2nd full years in the minors, pretty damn good if you ask me.
  18. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 04:10 PM) Its his second full season, and Crede was never the hitter Fields has been this year. Joe Crede in '02, ABs with half the strikeouts, 20 points lower on his OPS but 10 more HRs and 10 RBIs.
  19. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:56 PM) He's a great prospect. Probably the best hitting prospect in quite some time. Ok, I guess if you're talking in terms of best Sox hitting prospects this post makes a little more sense but still not enough. Fields hasn't even done this for a full season at any level. This is the same guy who put up a .750 OPS at Birmingham last year with 142 strikeouts compared to 55 walks. Let's not get ahead of ourselves now.
  20. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:40 PM) 1-0 shutout vs St. Louis this year I said a good team. QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:48 PM) Not that I am saying he has been dominant vs them, but are you being sarcastic again? Because Vazquez has been terrible vs everyone this year good or bad teams. With the exception of his good starts in the beginning of the season vs a minor league team named KC and a 2 good games vs Cleveland. Garcia, the man who has been pegged as the big game pitcher has been pathetic against just about everyone this year but especially the good teams. Atleast Vazquez had two ok months instead of sucking for the entire season. I still don't understand why anyone would choose Garcia over Vazquez, Garcia appears to be toast while Vazquez atleast has great stuff still, just a 2 cent head. I saw Javy pitch well for 5 innings yesterday, in a huge game against a great team that's more than I can say for anything Garcia has done this year.
  21. I'd rather leave him in the 9 hole where he's kicking ass rather than move him around in the lineup possibly screwing with his hot streak.
  22. QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:25 PM) ditto... Oh and I would rather have Garcia pitch the occasional big game and do good rather than have someone SPIFF on themselves every game. When has Garcia been anything near good against a good team?
  23. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:32 PM) Not to be a contrarian here but don't you usually bench some of your A guys when a day game follows a night game? Not in a game as important as this one, just ask a real manager like Jim Leyland.
  24. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:31 PM) Good to hear about the option year. I still don't see why the Padres would trade their set-up man, especially with Hoffman slumping. Fields might not be a great player in the majors, but he could be a very valuable part of our team in the next couple of years. He also gives us leverage in the Crede negotiations. I don't think adding Linebrink makes us a lot better. Linebrink makes us much better because it eliminates Garcia and gets the superior pitcher in there every 5 days in McCarthy. Of course this will NEVER happen.
  25. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:28 PM) how about fields + vazquez/garcia + broadway for abreu and gordon.....ill get to work on my xbox I'm going off legitimate rumblings and rumors from major publications, not just pulling spiff out of my ass like most trade purposals.
