  1. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 05:43 PM) Are your retorts always this well thought out and relevant? You forgot to say something about the MSM. I didn't see any spittle. 2 demerits.
  2. QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 10:59 PM) Yes, but if he had a different argument, you'd be complaining about that too. (That assertion is so blatantly obvious that to deny it or demand evidence would only be further proof of your foaming-at-the-mouth bias.) So it really doesn't matter what is actually said, because it's all your fault anyway. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 05:31 PM) The media coverage has been historic (in a bad way unfortunately) and it deserves ridicule. And honestly, the whole snarky Obamatron schtick is everywhere on these forums, your 'disapproval' of my posts is somewhat suspect. If you don't like my posts put me on ignore or whatever. Are you always this funny?
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 09:56 PM) From the category of "Things that come up when you properly vet a person", it turns out that in the mid 90's, Palin and her husband were members of the Alaskan Independence party, which advocates Alaska bringing up a vote on secession. She was still in contact with their convention earlier this year. Now that is very interesting. http://www.akip.org/ They seem to dispute the claim that they are secessionist, saying they only want to hold a vote. But when you explicitly state that that goal is meant to 'further the dream of independence' (paraphrasing)...well, how can one not consider such a group secessionist?
  4. QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 09:04 PM) I don't give two s***s about Sarah Palin and hate hearing about all this family stuff with her just like I hate all the Obama-Muslim crap. But jeebus, is it just me, or do you try to win every argument with, "the media has a liberal bias." Yes, but if he had a different argument, you'd be complaining about that too. (That assertion is so blatantly obvious that to deny it or demand evidence would only be further proof of your foaming-at-the-mouth bias.) So it really doesn't matter what is actually said, because it's all your fault anyway.
  5. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 03:14 PM) No, doesn't matter in the least. Abstinence-only education really really really works. Honest. And even though Palin is rabidly anti-choice and doesn't believe in choice, she and the rest of the McCain camp are going to try to score political points by stating how proud they are of Bristol Palin's "choice" to have the baby and to mary the unnamed father. A 1985 DUI for Palin's husband doesn't matter. This will matter, and should matter, even though I agree I'd like to see Bristol Palin's privacy respected as much as it could be. But, before we as a country elect officials who are going to be instrumental in the legislation of our so-called morality and are going to decide whether abstinence-only education is going to continue, let's see how well all that morality and abstinence preaching is working out for the Palins. Maybe it will, but no, it shouldn't. Not because abstinence-only education works, but because its failure in one case does not prove anything -- just as the failure of one sex-ed educated hs'er to use a condom doesn't prove that sex-ed is worthless. Abstinence-only is laughable completely on its own, with or without Bristol Palin's pregnancy.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 12:37 PM) The problem is...by most readings, it's actually illegal for a president to name his cabinet before the election in any official way, because the Law prohibits people from offering up their support for a candidate in exchange for anything tangible, like a position in the government. You can endorse someone, and you can casually let it leak out that you'll appoint Colin Powell as SecState as happened in 2000, but there can't be an official statement of that. The other problem is that cabinet officials typically resign when the President wants them to do so. Although O'Neill was a good choice for Treasury, when he started doing those things that made him a good choice, he was summarily dismissed. Because the President can not commit to keeping any particular cabinet member, I don't think an announcement is meaningful, legal or not.
  7. QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 08:55 PM) This is not a thread to ATTACK PEOPLE, or QUESTION WHAT THEY SAY. It is merely a spot to post your own thoughts as to why you are what you are. There really should be no quoting of anyone. What? Huh? What?
  8. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 08:39 PM) Rashard Mendenhall is really putting himself in a hole to start his career with the Steelers. Can't seem to hold onto the ball. Already has 3 fumbles lost in 54 carries this preseason. FWP -- teaching him everything he knows.
  9. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 09:08 AM) I have an opportunity to trade Braylon for Larry Johnson. Should I consider this? Eh...it's a lateral move, imo. Robbing Peter to pay Samantha. What rb are on your waiver wire, and who else do you have on your bench?
  10. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 11:08 AM) Sorry about that. Think it makes sense to trade some of my WR depth and Julius Jones for a better RB? Depends on what's available on the waiver wire (in terms of rb). But you do need to shore up your second back situation.
  11. That's not unreasonable. Looking at rotoworld's adp values, that's roughly pick 14 for picks 55 and 75. Yeah, it depends on league format and all, but in most leagues that's pretty lopsided.
  12. QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:57 AM) I gotta agree with bmags...I mean his doctor urged him not to come out here even just to be in attendence. But he sucked it up and actually gave a speech in front of 20,000 people. I mean the man just had surgery on his brain...what more could you expect of him? It was important for him to show because of his importance to the party, because of his prominence within it. When you have that platform, and you've already decided to make the difficult trip, why not use that opportunity to say something unique? It's not meant to be a criticism of him, personally. It just strikes me as regrettable.
  13. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 08:47 PM) For those who are interested: Live streaming video via the DNC Convention Website. By the way, I only caught the last 2 minutes, but Ted Kennedy is the man. I don't want to stop the cheerleading, and I know I may catch flak for this, but I was very disappointed with that speech. His speech was standard convention boilerplate. I wanted something that only Kennedy could deliver. You have an icon of the party speaking at (in his words) his last convention, everyone waiting to hear from him. And he said nothing memorable. This is not to question that the moment was emotional. But because of that, his speech had a unique potential to affect a fractured party and the campaign itself. It feels like a missed opportunity.
  14. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 08:49 PM) Um, okay... It's just light taunting to get people to sign up. Not sure what's wrong with that...
  15. Okay, I signed up for the 12-person league. Though, only 5 people so far, so we're still many pledges away from our goal. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that there's still plenty of room. You should sign up. Unless you're a pussy. But, hey, whatever works for you.
  16. QUOTE (pierard @ Aug 23, 2008 -> 02:48 AM) Bolts amazing no doubt, but he just sprints. Phelps dominated every swimming event in every style. To me, that would be like Bolt dominating sprints, hurdles, etc. I could be way off though. I never competed in either sport. I don't think that's a good comparison. You just don't see crossover between sprinters and hurdlers, but crossover between strokes is fairly common in swimming (maybe in part b/c the medley is a popular event, or maybe just because youth clubs need to fill out lanes with a fixed number of swimmers). Swimmers might specialize in particular strokes (as Phelps is strongest by far in free and fly), but many will be at least 'pretty good' in some or all of the rest. Bolt, imo, looked like a hs varsity athlete at a junior high track meet. He looked like he needed a higher level of competition. And of course there isn't any, which is why it was such an awesome thing to watch.
  17. QUOTE (3E8 @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 07:18 PM) Whatever happened to the girl who used to post here who loved Willie Harris Those were some of my all-time favorite posts. She was a one-person Willie Harris and D'Angelo Jimenez fan club. Maybe on a Nats board now? QUOTE (earthshiner @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 11:34 PM) Willie Harris is quite possibly my favorite active player. I have no reason why but I have just always been a fan of his. But how in the hell does he have 12 homers this year? Is the NL really that bad? When Willie came up, he was thought to have more pop than he showed with the Sox. More line drive/gap-type power than hr power, but still, something. Not that I'd expect 12 homers, but it's not as surprising as it'd be for Joey Gathright.
  18. QUOTE (th0mas35 @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 03:24 PM) Having Harris be this high on the list is a joke. Agreed. He should be much higher. Below Uribe, but still, what a rip off.
  19. QUOTE (chunk23 @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 10:24 PM) Really, I don't see how the Cy would go to anyone but Cliff Lee. Besides closers are vastly overrated and a number of K-rods saves are crappy little one out saves, not to mention that he allows way too many baserunners to be considered lights out. Fact of the matter is, the Angels run differential is so low that he has something like 30% more save opportunities than any other closer in baseball, and converts saves at a worse rate than many others. While he will probably break the record, it's a matter of circumstances and not just skills. Any other closer in baseball would be on the same pace if they were in the Angels bullpen. I don't know about "any", but quite a few, anyway. No way, no how, does he deserve the CYA. It'll be another idiot test for the major awards. Lee & Halladay are the only real candidates.
  20. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 10:44 PM) Just saw they are investigating the age of one of the Chinese gymnasts. He Kexin may actually be only 14. If found to be 14, the US will be awarded the team gold and Nastia will be awarded a gold in one of the individual events. There's a ton of evidence on her. Still gotta feel bad for the gymnasts, themselves. He is just a kid, it sucks that she was put in this position.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 08:05 AM) This is the quickest surrender I have ever seen that didn't involve the French... Because Morneau is clearly of Native American origin.
  22. Wasn't the rumor that they asked for Clay Buchholz for Fuentes, as well? The Rockies are high. SO intended.
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 07:28 AM) Asterisk means this guy COULD be a possibility for a KW deal in the next 2 weeks QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 09:25 PM) It's the full list...I don't think anywhere on there I mentioned that KW was going to be able to trade for any of those pitchers. No. Oh, well, except for where you posted the exact same list with the exact same formatting and said that Webb and Beckett were possibilities for KW deals in the next 2 weeks. But, no, other than that, nowhere at all. Boy, am I embarrassed for misreading that one! I'm glad I have more serious baseball fans like you around to straighten me out. How soon can we get Mulder here? That guy's awesome. He pitches for the Philadelphia A's, right?
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 05:32 PM) Wasn't Gio the PTBNL in the original Thome trade? I believe they did that solely for roster spot purposes to enable the phils to avoid losing him in the rule 5 draft. Don't remember on the Thome trade, but I'm pretty sure he was the ptbnl in the the Garcia trade. And Kenny proceeded to name him a little earlier than planned.
