  1. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 11:10 PM) Counter argument to what? It's tired because this board had about 30 brian anderson threads going last spring all discussing the same idiotic topic of who deserved to play CF coming out of ST. Idiotic decisions inevitably become idiotic discussions.
  2. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 09:16 PM) All of that assumes though that the price for the 2 players would be equal. I would seriously expect Tejada to be much more expensive in terms of what we'd have to give up. I don't disagree. I was just comparing the two as players.
  3. QUOTE(Vance Law @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 07:02 PM) Furcal is the better defender. Is much faster/ steals bases. Would fill our hole at leadoff. Meanwhile, Tejada is not 2004 Tejada. His slugging has dropped in each of the last 4 years. Furcal put up better power numbers in 2006 than Tejada did in 2007. And that means...absolutely nothing. Tejada has outslugged Furcal every single year, and he'll do it again next year. Hitting-wise, I take Tejada in a heartbeat. Furcal's ops+ the last 4 years has been 95, 102, 107, 76. Tejada's has been 131, 128, 126, 109. They each had a fluke bad year, and Tejada still DRASTICALLY outperformed Furcal. The question is whether Tejada's still good enough defensively to hold down ss. There's talk in Baltimore of shifting him to 3b, with Mora moving to lf -- and note that the Orioles don't have any young, decent hitting ss pushing him, either. The other issue is, since Ozzie's gotta have his speedster to leadoff, it'd be nice to get someone who fits that profile who can actually hit. That and defense are the 2 advantages to Furcal. But his bat is leagues behind Tejada's.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 08:40 PM) Did I miss the memo that Favre is retiring? Holy s***, the lovefest for him tonight is pathetic. From a fantasy football column:
  5. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 07:00 PM) Hmmm that's a lot of money for Romo. Still apart from 1 game, he's probably shown he's close to a franchise type QB this season. "probably"? "close to"? I mean, if you're taking out that Buffalo game, I'd say he's shown that and more. I'm not completely convinced, but he hardly could have done better in the rest. Didn't he take out a $30 mil insurance policy this year? Interesting that the guaranteed money almost matches that number.
  6. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 05:50 PM) And...saving a lot of money that could be spent in other places (resigning Tex?), and getting an OF that could in a couple years take over the hole being left by Jones....that's not a bad formula. Between Jones walking and Renteria traded...the Braves have freed up at least $20 million in salary compared to 07, depending on what exactly happens with all the money Boston sent over with Renteria. That's true, I wasn't even thinking about Teixeira. I'd still be surprised if he cut an extension, though. Boras loves the free market even more than anyone at Cato or Heritage.
  7. The Braves were BADLY in need of some pitching. Getting a solid, if unspectacular pitcher, with Escobar taking over at ss, could be a big improvement overall.
  8. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 05:25 PM) Whatever, Jurjens stalker. Now, what the hell was I supposed to do when my favorite site, "Jeff Weaver's Mom", hasn't been updated in years? As Sarah Silverman says, When God gives you AIDS, make lemonAIDS...
  9. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 05:16 PM) Was this really necessary? Can we be civil in here please? Stop being such a pussy, you asslicking f***munch.
  10. This trade was bruited about by Baseball Prospectus a few weeks ago. I know this because it's the most recent entry at jairjurrjens.com. Which of course I check every day for the very latest Jair Jurrjens news.
  11. So noone here believes Moreno when he says that signing ARod would send the wrong message to Guerrero? My first guess is Boston. They'll be flush with cash, and signing ARod will make easier the eventual departure of Ramirez. Then the Dodgers, Cubs, Giants, Angels, in that order. Oh, and the Rangers. Can't forget the Rangers.
  12. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 09:48 AM) hmm, should we merge the 50 post topic in trade winds with this 20 post topic? just seems to make sense to get it all in one spot. No...different topics...this isn't an 'ARod to the Sox' thread, that one is.
  13. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 12:06 AM) God the NL is terrible. That. I want a "real" world series this year. The Cuban national team would have to put up a better fight than this. You see Josh Fogg starting game 3, and you wonder how the AL-NL split gets to this...
  14. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 28, 2007 -> 11:23 PM) I'm not in on the game obviously...but I'll bet you that Boras could have gone to the Yankees and said that a 7 year extension worth $30 a year would keep him, and I'll bet the Yankees would have done it right now. They're about to dump an awful lot of money around to keep some consistency now that Torre has gone. IMO, if this was about money, he'd never have opted out. The Yankees could have met any price ARod genuinely could have asked for. I seriously doubt that. If they wanted to be SURE they kept him, they would've offered more money initially. At least offer a salary hike if you want to flatter someone. This appears to be NY's m.o. this offseason -- offer a contract you believe the guy won't accept, just so you can say you tried.
  15. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 28, 2007 -> 11:14 PM) No, that wasn't the rumor. The rumor was 5 years, $140 million ON TOP of the 3 years, $28 million a year remaining on his current deal. So they were talking on the order of 8 years, $225 million or so, with the Rangers still picking up $21 mil. Yes, I know it was an extension. But the annual salary would have at best stayed the same. Boras is thinking that ARod can go 7 or 8 years, $30 mil+, I think. Maybe ++, I dunno. But a lot.
  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 28, 2007 -> 10:55 PM) Oh yeah, it's on. I bet deep down, 1 of 2 things happened. Either the Yankees offered him a fair deal, and he genuinely decided he didn't want to stay in New York any more after the beatings of the last few years, of there's some element of tampering by another team, which will never truly be found out. One of the 2. I don't think either is likely. The rumors were along the lines of 5 years, $140 mil, or $27.5 mil per. That's basically what he's earning now. Boras thinks he can do better. I think it's as simple as that. The fact that he opted out so soon (well before he was required to) suggests that he thinks ARod can do MUCH better. We'll find out soon enough.
  17. QUOTE(knightni @ Oct 26, 2007 -> 08:30 PM) Well, is there a decent backup plan in house immediately available if he is a free agent? Jason Bourgeois is a 2B/OF spect, but only a SS in a pinch. I don't think there's anyone in-house. But that doesn't mean you bring a guy back at just any price. You can always bring in someone, even if its not the best option. Is it worth exercising the option just to avoid the risk of having (say) Eckstein or Vizquel at short next year? And what team would really give Uribe $5 mil next year?
  18. QUOTE(knightni @ Oct 26, 2007 -> 06:55 PM) Uribe will be back. There's really no one out there much better or as young. ARod's merely the fevered dream of a midlevel franchise. Maybe. I don't think he's the worst option. But do we exercise the option? Who else will give him $5 mil?
  19. QUOTE(G&T @ Oct 26, 2007 -> 07:09 PM) The Chicago White Stockings are actually the Cubs. Both, actually. The White Stockings became the Cubs, then the Sox moved in and took the name, then perfected it.
  20. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 26, 2007 -> 06:21 PM) If that state were any more boring, it would be Nebraska i win Okay, cool by me.
  21. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 26, 2007 -> 05:16 PM) Per wikipedia (so you know it's true!) That's prolly where I'm remembering it from. Close enough. Who can be expected to remember Iowa, anyway? If that state were any more boring, hell, even South Dakota might look good... Just kidding, wite...South Dakota could never look good...
  22. I believe the Sox are originally from somewhere in Minnesota, only Comiskey moved them before 1901.
  23. QUOTE(BearSox @ Oct 25, 2007 -> 11:50 PM) Josh Fogg is going to throw 81 pitches in his start. Not surprisingly, all 81 pitches will be strikes and he will have 27 K's. Cole Hamels keeps a picture of Josh Fogg under his hat for inspiration.
  24. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 25, 2007 -> 11:43 PM) Now that's a sign that the Rockies time may have run out. No way -- not with the great stopper Josh Fogg taking the ball next...
