  1. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 07:44 PM) So because its a "toss up" Williams should stick with Haeger/Tracey/Logan/Phillips? Ozzie wants a shutdown bullpen, and he was the right idea. I trust Williams to bring in some guys to get the job done. No, I just hope he doesn't throw cash at a couple "nasty" arms and assume that the bullpen woes are solved. I like the approach of 2005 -- collect a bunch of moderately priced arms and something nasty will come out of it. Shingo's ineffective? Well, we got Hermanson. Now he's hurting? Okay, let's try Jenks. Get a 'great' arm, and who knows if you get his off year. Depth > stars.
  2. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 07:20 PM) KW was talking about tweaking. Getting rid of Crede wouldn't be tweaking. I like how Ozzie said KW gets him what he wants, and what he wants is a nasty bullpen. If that happens, only injuries will keep the White Sox out of the 2007 postseason. Or a bad rotation... I'm loath to spend much on the bullpen. It's just too variable. The Phils collected prized old bullpen arms for years, and look where it got them. Unless we're talking about a BJ Ryan-type arm, I'll always take depth over starpower.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 05:03 PM) Don't you also have to say that injuries are a major concern with him? He hasn't really played a full season (140+ games) since 2002, and then only twice in his entire career. And like Dellucci, his splits against lefties are atrocious.
  4. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 01:33 AM) No. They made a rule change back in 1991 (?) saying the game had to go at least 9 innings for it to be considered a no-no. Ah, coolness. Thanks.
  5. QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 01:12 AM) Well....who can bunt, steal bases, and make contact? Yeah, I know who you mean. And if that happens, it'll be a good thing the puke smiley's gone, cuz I think otherwise I'd wear out my mouse after the signing. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 06:43 AM) Dellucci is definitely an option, but there were only 10 voting options. He only made 950K for 2006, so he is relatively cheap. He does have a high K:BB ratio and the most games he has ever played in one season is 132 (2006), so there are some question marks there. I think the biggest question mark is that he can't hit lhp worth a damn. I think he's a good player, but he would do nothing to help us in that area.
  6. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 09:10 AM) Well, to cut through your sarcasm... yes. After all, they traded for Lugo. And he is probably 6M cheaper than Furcal. So like I said, if they still see in Lugo what they did when they traded for him, then this deal is a good one for both sides. The Dodgers want to win next year, and they will want starting pitching - which we can give them. If you want to disagree with my idea, that's fine. No need for the sneering. "After all, they traded for Lugo." Okay... And, after all, they signed Furcal, and he had a good year. What they saw in Lugo, I believe, was a good utility player for the stretch run. (Oops.) They apparently didn't see an everyday shortstop, since he's hardly ever played there since the trade. They apparently don't even see him as an everyday player, since he's started on the bench for 25/57 games (if my count is right -- not just behind Kent, but behind Betemit at third, and Betemit's cheap next year). Nor has there been anything to the effect that the Dodgers are looking to move Furcal, or sign Lugo. So to me this sounds like another 'Wouldn't it be great if...' trade scenarios. Also, I'll use whatever tone I want in my posts. But do know that I am deeply grateful for your advice on the matter.
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 12:54 AM) I'd rather not have to watch Ozuna play 60 games in the outfield again this season. Also, I don't think Dellucci is Ozzie's type of player. If you read everything that Ozzie is saying in the press, it's quite obvious he's referring to a specific player. Sweeney?
  8. Devern Hansack gets the BoSox a win over the O's in a rain-shortened 5-inning game. No hits, one walk. Does this qualify as the second no-hitter this year or not?
  9. C'mon, this would be f'n awesome. Clinton v Clinton in the 2008 Dem primary? Who wouldn't pay to see that?
  10. I see... Since Lugo has sucked ever since he was traded to the Dodgers and will demand $8 mil, the Dodgers are going to desperately try to resign him and trade the productive Furcal. Hell, they'd surely even be willing to throw in a mil or three. Since LA has discovered this winning philosophy, maybe they'll give us Takashi Saito as a throw-in? After all, they have Elmer Dessens now.
  11. That worked out well. Dontrelle really, really wanted to throw the last game. Even though they're playing for nothing. Really, really, really, really, really, REALLY. He leaves after 1 1/3 with a sore arm. Well, I mean, c'mon, who could've seen that coming? Girardi must have figured, What the hell do I have to lose here?
  12. Cameron's not a fa. The Pads have already said they'll pick up his option. Dellucci should be on that list.
  13. Postseason, and then some. Pedro's gonna be out for 8 months following surgery, which means no "baseball activities" until June. Why didn't Pedro want the MRI before the contract, now?... I keep hearing that the Mets are here to stay, but that staff will need a lot of work in the offseason. A LOT of work. Edit: Link.
  14. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 07:07 PM) Is it my understanding that the transfats being regulated are more along the lines of in the oils used to cook with? So this is more like taking the lead out of paint, no? I think that's how most of these tfs get in the food, although in principle the ban is on any artificial transfats. I'm not sure. You have some people who claim that cooking with oils without the artificial transfats doesn't affect the taste, but I have a hard time believing that. McD's could surely do without the bad press, so I imagine they'd switch to a healthier oil if it doesn't hurt the taste and costs about the same. So I'd guess that any oil that's equivalent in taste costs significantly more. Were non-lead paints much more expensive than lead paints? (Real question, I dunno the history.) I have no problem with a little bit of paternalism. It'd be nice if everyplace would just list every single pesticide used at each stage, all genetic modifications, and all nutrition information, and I could take in all that information quickly, and I had the chemical and medical education to appreciate every bit individually and how it might interact with the rest of my lifestyle. But what can I say, I'm just sorta dull like that. Sorry for the off-topic post.
  15. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 01:56 PM) Under most circumstances, I would agree. But these are not people looking just for the chance to beat up the U.S. They are also brainwashed by some crazy extremist cleric into thinking that this is an opportunity to take American lives and go to Eden after the fact. If you've ever seen some of the tapes the suicide bombers make... they believe hard. Death in this fashion is not seen as a negative - it is something to aspire to. I'm sticking with inflation. I agree with you on this. /so ashamed
  16. QUOTE(MinnySoxFan @ Sep 29, 2006 -> 01:01 AM) I take it back. You all suck. Awwwww, don't say that. :hug
  17. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 09:11 PM) The Sox won't trade the face of the franchise. No, but they have let him walk in free agency for no compensation. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 28, 2006 -> 03:24 PM) I understand the reasons why St. Louis wouldn't want to do this, but some of those same reasons apply to why they would do it. Yes, they're losing their entire starting staff...but they're losing their entire starting staff! Aside from Carpenter, they really don't have anyone in their rotation. So if they want to shoot for the division next year...they can either hope that all of their young guys progress, or they can pick up a veteran wearing a ring. I believe that Jim Edmonds and his $12m. salary also come off their books this year, IIRC. They already got f'd sacrificing a good young pitcher (and then some) for a proven veteran. Now we're gonna get both of their promising young starters, each of which may be able to start next year, for one Buehrle? I don't see it.
  18. Pedro Martinez is out for the postseason with a torn tendon in his calf. Link. Glavine and El Duque are your best pitchers. Good luck with that.
  19. Why are we just applying the fluke label to Matthews? Soriano's usual obp is .300-.340. This year he puts up a .360 and the highest slugging percentage of his life, good for him. But I'm not too enthused by a .280/.320/.510 line in Soriano's glorious return to the AL, not for $15 million. And it's gonna cost damn near that sum.
  20. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Sep 27, 2006 -> 12:08 PM) ESPN had about 5 networks doing noting but TO talk, thats what i meant. ESPN needs to get a life, god i wish for a chicago based media network. Oh, okay. I thought you just meant the story they were running. I haven't even checked the tv.
  21. QUOTE(daa84 @ Sep 27, 2006 -> 11:48 AM) VORP IIRC does not take into account defensive stats either, which would raise uribe and anderson, but probably not to the point that they should still have had every day jobs...that is if you buy into any of these stats Well, it would probably raise Uribe to being an everyday player, right? Anything over 0 is better than a replacement player, so as long as his d brings the vorp over 0, we'd probably be better sticking with Uribe. I'm not so sure of that, but at least that's the theory, I believe.
  22. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Sep 27, 2006 -> 12:00 PM) anyone else think the crap network(espn) is jumping the shark a wee bit?? No. Wasn't the initial report from the AP? And it's supposedly based on a police report. Pretty solid source, if true. TO loves attention, but not like this. Very strange.
  23. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Sep 25, 2006 -> 09:10 PM) In or out of the playoffs, leaving Garland in the game to give up 12 earned runs is absolutely inexcusable. 8 earned, 4 unearned.
  24. QUOTE(samclemens @ Sep 24, 2006 -> 04:21 PM) his "heal the world" do-nothing policies towards terrorism are at least a large part of the reason we are where we are today. im sure i'll be crucified for saying this. also, please don't bother slamming fox news, try instead actually adressing what was said in the interview. face it, foxnews is as legitimate as the other mainstream media sources like cnn and msnbc, and chris wallace is as legitimate as any other interviewing reporter. What motivation do you give others to respond to the content of an interview when you don't do it, yourself? Neither party knew the situation for s*** before 9/11. If either C or B truly understood the consequences, he would have done more. It was a massive failure of understanding for our whole country, and this passing the buck crap has got to stop.
