  1. Reading the comments on Zorn's blog, I was amazed how many people were calling for a vote for Whitney. Looks like the Greens will have an easier time next go-round.
  2. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 09:03 PM) I'm laughing at the democrats who are saying "we've really come together and organized our party and that's what you're seeing tonight" people hate GWB, they're voting for the opposite of him...it could be the duck party whose platform is bikini waxing for the elderly and the results would be the same. I disagree, but you gotta love that imagery. At least after you're done puking.
  3. Some of those names are lol-moments. What do you think the reaction is when someone in the Pads' front office goes down the list: So, are we offering arbitration to Dave Roberts?...Todd Walker?...Chan Ho Park?
  4. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Nov 2, 2006 -> 05:19 PM) This guy is awesome. An Iowan native. I he'll be good for the Bulls for years. That draft class was stacked. That's nice and all, but how's his grammar?
  5. QUOTE(Disco72 @ Nov 3, 2006 -> 06:47 PM) Anderson has struggled worse than the others? Crede nor Rowand were never this bad? Now that is a bit of exaggeration. People have short memories. Anderson would be fine if Uribe and Pods would have done anything to help this team. Some of the players below were in their first full year, others had the year after a couple of years. Ventura was putrid when he first came up (0-41, I think). I'm not saying BA is going to be a Ventura, a Crede, or even a Rowand or Cameron...but I think it is kind of hard to judge where he is going to end up after one season. To be fair, I could have put the Jeff Abbotts and the McCay Christensens here too as they were bad and never got better. Robin Ventura 1990 Chicago White Sox 150 493 48 123 17 1 5 54 157 55 53 1 4 .324 .318 .249 Mike Cameron 1998 Chicago White Sox 141 396 53 83 16 5 8 43 133 37 101 27 11 .285 .336 .210 Royce Clayton 2002 Chicago White Sox 112 342 51 86 14 2 7 35 125 20 67 5 1 .295 .365 .251 Aaron Rowand 2002 Chicago White Sox 126 302 41 78 16 2 7 29 119 12 54 0 1 .298 .394 .258 Paul Konerko 2003 Chicago White Sox 137 444 49 104 19 0 18 65 177 43 50 0 0 .305 .399 .234 Miguel Olivo 2003 Chicago White Sox 114 317 37 75 19 1 6 27 114 19 80 6 4 .287 .360 .237 Joe Crede 2004 Chicago White Sox 144 490 67 117 25 0 21 69 205 34 81 1 2 .299 .418 .239 Jose Valentin 2004 Chicago White Sox 125 450 73 97 20 3 30 70 213 43 139 8 6 .287 .473 .216 Timo Perez 2004 Chicago White Sox 103 293 38 72 12 0 5 40 99 15 29 3 1 .285 .338 .246 Brian Anderson 2006 Chicago White Sox 134 365 46 82 23 1 8 33 131 30 90 4 7 .290 .359 .225 If he is having troubles other than his stats, fine. If he refuses to adjust, ok. But don't write him off on his bad year based on stats alone. I wasn't writing him off. I've been a fan of Anderson the whole year, and I still am. But yes, his year, as a whole, is one of the worst years in the recent history of the Sox. I'm well aware that it's not The Perfect Measure Of Performance, but as a rough-and-ready guide, look at OPS+. Excluding catchers, how many players have had a worse OPS+ with as many abs as Anderson? Among the opening day starters, going back about 10 years, there's that season by Cameron that you put up, then Caruso, then this Guillen fellow. (I think that's it -- I'm recalling from earlier.) I was focusing on those starters, so admittedly, I wasn't really looking at, say, Timo. But no matter what, it's a short list. Of the list you put up, some are definitely better offensive seasons than Anderson's -- Rowand, Konerko, Crede, Valentin. I have no problem with Anderson as our starting cf next year. But there's no way anyone can look at his hitting this year, over the entire year, and say it was anything but wretched.
  6. Is there any reason to believe he would have recovered had he not made the comeback? It sounds like the Twins were pretty careful, but they just couldn't find anything wrong. They only went for surgery after consulting with 3 different doctors. This is one of those good-for-the-Sox-but-still-sad moments. What he was doing for most of the year was just awesome. I'm thinking of trying to get some of those games on tape, just in case he doesn't come back the same.
  7. Just because the Sox have stuck with others who have struggled doesn't mean they would stick with BA if there weren't 'anything else' going on. Especially when he struggled so much worse than the others. Neither Crede nor Rowand nor McCarthy nor Garland ever had a season this bad. As a whole, this is one of the worst seasons any Sox play has had in the last decade, at least. I like the communist theory.
  8. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 02:52 AM) Yeah, I'm smart enough not to fall the I know 2 very intelligent people who went to military acadamies fallacy. Hell, I know 8 from within one year of me in HS, and yes, they were all very intelligent. So what? That doesn't change the fact that a disproportionate amount of our military is black, hispanic, and undereducated. Kerry was speaking to a group of students in the LA area, where dropout rates can reach as high as 50%. These are areas that are highly targeted by military recruiters. Why? because for those students who don't stay in school, and I mean stay in school through college, the only out may be through the military. And that's what Kerry was saying. You're a smart guy. You're smart enough to know that The wingnuts can spin it anyway they want. OMG, "Kerry called the military dumb," except that he never said anything of the sort. All he said was that Education as a means to a career without RPGs wizzing by your ear, in many parts of the country, that's the f***ing truth. It's a socio-economic issue that you can ignore with all the rhetoric you wish, but it's not going away until the education system improves on the whole. Kerry's call to students to work hard, to stay in school, is now being portrayed as being unpatriotic and non-supportive of our military. It's ridiculous. But it's election season, and I expect nothing less. Let's keep the focus on being politically correct, not offending anyone, and ignore the larger, actually important issues that plague this country. Late response, haven't been reading today. Suppose someone says, You better work hard and get a college degree, or else you'll be stuck in Chicago. We check the averages and notice that Chicago ranks below other cities (Seattle, SF, DC, NYC...) in % of the population with a bachelor's. So you would conclude that Chicago is indeed a city that just gets those who can't do any better? Overall averages don't imply anything causal.
  9. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 01:41 AM) Can somebody come up with stats to refute Kerry's claim? What's the % of college graduates in Iraq? (It's actually probably much higher than you'd expect with all of the damn reservists they were forced to call upon.) What's the % of college grads in the US workforce? This reminds me of the backlash following Cosby's comments at Temple's (actually I think it was another historically black college) graduation ceremony a couple of years ago. Who the f*** cares if they hurt somebody's feelings by backhandedly calling them dumb. They're speaking the truth. It doesn't matter. Even if it's true on average (which I'm personally sceptical about), the military is, for many very intelligent people, their first choice. (Two of the most intelligent people in my hs class went to military academies.) Cheat, you're a smart guy. You know the difference between averages and stereotypes. If someone said, Work hard in school or you'll be like a black person, you'd know it was idiocy. But here you're asking for standard errors. Come on.
  10. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 07:35 PM) Well, at least the other statement from the Kerry camp was that Kerry totally screwed up the line. If you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy, you'll end up screwing up a prepared line, helping keep the President in power, and keeping the country stuck in a war in Iraq. Odd coming from Kerry, whose college grades were worse than Bush's. Ex post rationalizations don't count for anything, even if they're true. (And we'll never know.) Kerry's a dead fish. If I'm Dean, I throw him to the wolves.
  11. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 07:17 PM) Well put, I agree totally. The one thing I will say in Kerry's favor is that he definitely learned from Swift Boat. He's made it clear he won't be taking gruff sitting down. Unfortunately, in this case, he deserves the gruff (unlike the idiotic swifties). Yeah, Swift Boat was the first thing I thought of when I read his response. He learned WAY, WAY too late. I'd prefer he learned the graceful exit.
  12. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 07:01 PM) Actually he meant to insult the President. He misspoke. It happens a lot. Kerry may be a douchebag but if you think he intentionally insulted soldiers... well... keep drinking the kool aid. Oh, I see, now I'll edit that part of my post where I spoke about his intentions. I don't give a rat's ass who he wanted to insult. He said pretty clearly that the uneducated end up in the military. It wasn't a statement that could be interpreted two different ways. And for the record, I supported him in the 2004 election, and it's likely I'll vote for a Dem again in 2008. But he does nothing but hurt the party now. From a pragmatic point of view, for Dems to rally around him after a statement like that would be disastrous. It'll be replayed thousands of times. I don't know if he's a douchebag. Nor will I stay up trying to figure it out.
  13. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 06:43 PM) - Kerry today. Yeah, that's nice and all, but he DID insult them. He's toast. Just like he's been for the last 2+ years.
  14. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 02:47 PM) He better be playing sidekick though. He proved last year he can't do it unless he has major lineup protection, and I still don't like the idea of a guy not showing up for 3 months, waiting for the team to die, then fattening up when the season is done to get his money. But then again, you see lots of guys like that on World Champs, so maybe your right. You're saying he had protection in July? If you look at his stats, he ALWAYS heats up as the year goes along. So if he slumps in the first half it gets more pronounced, but it doesn't mean he only produces in garbage time. Arguably his best 2 months in 2003 were the last 2.

    So gross

Kobayashi!!! I thought I read somewhere that his stomach is either shaped or positioned lower than that of most people (lower, maybe?). There's an 80% chance I saw it in Wikipedia. Either there or some article around the time of the Nathan's competition.
  16. QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 07:27 AM) The only push they had was for him to not take the option. Now that he is a free agent, they have another chance. I couldn't see him negotiating with the Cubs without exercising that option. Maybe. They have been negotiating, though. I wonder what numbers Ramirez's camp has presented. It can't be the $60 mil over 5 that rotoworld mentions -- I'd think the Cubs would jump at that.
  17. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 11:17 PM) I'm not, they NEVER spend the biggest of money on the biggest of players. Why bother when you can just get an expensive manager?
  18. If he goes to the Angels, the Angels get stronger, but it takes away the Yankees' best trading partner if they really do want to get rid of ARod. Making it at least interesting for us. I'm surprised the Cubs didn't make a stronger push to resign him.
  19. QUOTE(The Critic @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 01:59 AM) There's nothing wrong with it. It just seems like some people are assuming that the Sox would have destroyed them in the Series, and I don't think it's a fair assumption. No joke. Towards the end of the year we were losing to horses*** teams like the Royals and getting beat by the Tigers in a crucial series. Yet somehow it goes without saying that we'd have pounded the Cards. There's obviously a big disparity between the AL and NL, but it's been blown out of all right proportion. To think any team fronted by Pujols and Carpenter is a pushover is ridiculous.
  20. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Oct 27, 2006 -> 01:15 PM) Why the hell would he take that awful job? Was there problems with him and towers? The Padres job now becomes the best job out there. Padres have money to spend, I think they land Zito this offseason. From what I've read, the Padres said they wouldn't give him an extension now (he had only one year left on his Pads contract). So that's at least part of it. Whether he wanted to move on anyway is hard to tell.
  21. QUOTE(Wedge @ Oct 28, 2006 -> 10:10 AM) Clearly Mark is interested in going to St. Louis. However, he is probably even MORE interested in going to Notre Dame. Jacket > hat.
  22. QUOTE(TLAK @ Oct 27, 2006 -> 09:36 PM) He's 1-7 (.143) so far with the Tiburones. A small sample, but not inconsistant with the larger sample we saw last summer. I really think the team should bring in a legit CF, maybe along the lines of a David DeJesus. Then if Brian wants to play, all he has to do is play better than him. I think it would help both Brian and the team. 7?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you f'n kidding me????????????? Holy $@%@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Oct 27, 2006 -> 05:12 PM) Don't you get the sense that they're very, very close to blowing this thing open? I do. Polanco is killing them. What a tank job. Even closer than that. I've been saying it all along: Tigers in 3.
