    2013 TV Thread

I've watched a fair amount of Breaking Bad, and I just can't decide what I think. It pisses me off and it frequently recycles its own plotlines. That said, Mad Men is an amazing show.
  2. The problem is oral bioavailability. He wouldn't take a ton of the oral if he was aware of these dosing issues...he would just take HGH via injection
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 29, 2013 -> 06:37 PM) If anyone really worried about it, it would work more often. The idea is that they don't want to steal because it's there. If they do want to steal, they have to wait to see where he's going like he's a left handed pitcher.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 29, 2013 -> 03:35 PM) 3rd one down Those reviews are always great. The company I work for sells through bb.com. People think our protein product gives them energy. We also have 0 reviews because people didn't lose weight/gain muscle/etc.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 29, 2013 -> 03:09 PM) Are you saying its proven to not do anything or thats your opinion? There's no research on human beings supportive of benefits to athletes, or really anybody. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 29, 2013 -> 03:13 PM) Do you think that this could get Melky Cabrera additional time suspended? That's a good question, I wondered the same thing. It wouldn't be fair if this was the original person he purchased from. If he lied about how he got things, though, strike him down.
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 29, 2013 -> 03:07 PM) So you are saying that this guy is selling Lewis a under-the-tongue spray that doesnt work? Yes. Sweet, sweet profit. The dietary supplement industry is all about what some guy or personal trainer tells you works, and typically these people heard about things the same way. Or they just read the product packaging and called that "research." Here's a recent research review on Deer Antler Velvet on a variety of human uses: QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 29, 2013 -> 03:09 PM) Arent these 2 different arguments. 1) This substance is banned by the NFL, therefore its illegal regardless of the results. 2) This substance while banned does nothing and therefore we shouldnt care. It always seems that argument 2 is irrelevant. Otherwise sports would have to actually prove that the alleged substance helped the competitor. Sure, 1 makes it technically illegal though it will be very difficult to prove that he took it. 2 is important because the national media is crucifying this guy for having cheated when he is really just a hoodwinked consumer. This same news media is likely the very reason he ever took it in the first place, because they go crazy when they hear there is some new supplement going around that makes outrageous claims. While the NFL can do what it wants with its rules, we as fans can say "hey, he took something that doesn't work and won't be playing better because of it since it does not work." The reason it can't be tested for is because it isn't changing anything within you enough to actually be indicative of a change. That says enough for me.
  7. It does nothing when taken orally or transdermally. I'm not even sure that it is in Deer Antler Velvet at all, though I don't recall that specifically. But yes, it sounds like a big deal. That's how they make you want to buy it, too.
  8. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 29, 2013 -> 12:44 PM) I think the more interesting Ray Lewis story is about the alleged use of performance enhancing drugs to recover from his injury this season. They are reporting that he took Deer Antler Velvet, something so disproven that mainstream dietary supplement makers won't even sell it anymore -- and they have no qualms selling things that don't work. Lewis would have a greater anabolic boost from looking at porn. Seriously.
  9. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 29, 2013 -> 12:01 PM) This is the key. The dosage of the drug given out for replacement therapy is not enough to produce the massive strength change you see in the professional athletes. This is also very easy to detect with normal PED testing. The recent advent of topical TRT products is thanks to Patrick Arnold, the chemist behind the Cream and the Clear. He and I are acquaintances (he lives in Seymour, IL and still sells legal supplements). Anyways, if the documents only say that Gio took the AminoRip, then that newspaper has done him a huge disservice. That's nothing, you can buy similar products all over the place. Under most conditions, they would do nothing at all. Almost as asinine as the line of inquiry on Ray Lewis and Deer Antler Velvet, which doesn't do a damn thing.
  10. We had a period of a year or two where damn near every young pitcher we had had devastating arm injuries. I recall Parque, Biddle, Barcelo, and I'm sure there were others.
  11. It's not TOO hard to get a prescription for testosterone, I know a lot of fitness-oriented guys that have done it. You're not given d-bol or something super potent, but T replacement therapy can have some big time physique benefits. Oftentimes you're sacrificing your fertility in this quest, though, if you jump into it as young as some of my acquaintances.
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 28, 2013 -> 01:46 PM) Poor, poor Lovie has to sit at home and get paid a $5 million salary. Makes perfect sense. He went for a couple decent jobs, but there's no reason to accept a lower position when you're still getting paid for your old job. Why forfeit the 5 mill to be someone's DC for
  13. Well, amino acid supplements are very common and not a big deal. It seems like that list wasn't pulling punches on anyone else, so why would it lie for Gio?
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 29, 2013 -> 08:17 AM) It looks like Butler is stealing minutes from the 2's and not from Lu. And that's just fine. I like Marco, but Jimmy can outplay him with a little bit of offense. He's had plenty of offense as of late.
  15. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 28, 2013 -> 09:29 PM) Article on conservative navel-gazing in private - interesting read. They're actually not completely oblivious to where they've been f***ing up. http://www.newrepublic.com/article/112253/...ervative-bunker Great read. Unfortunate note that almost all the self-reflection came from those who are not elected officials.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 28, 2013 -> 06:43 PM) Bloom's taxonomy, lol. Actually, it's always a challenge to get Chinese students to develop their critical thinking and creative skills. So much of the educational system here is based on rote learning. So I constantly go back and refer to the concepts of analysis/synthesis/evaluation...ways to develop those higher level skills and yet make the activity fun and engaging too. Debate is one that I haven't seen specifically, although it kind of dovetails with what a few said here so far. Nobody mentioned drama Drama was by no means required at any level of schooling, but when I was a senior in HS I decided to join up with the drama peoples and I worked as stage manager for a 4-day run of Annie Get Your Gun. This meant about 2-3 months of work as I recall it, and while there are obvious benefits of working as part of a team and leading people to get a task done...there was nothing better than seeing the end result and feeling on one hand responsible for how good it was but on the other seeing every other actor and helping hand and seeing how indispensable and unique their contributions were. It was really rewarding, even if just for that feeling. I wish my high school facilitated that sort of thing better. Granted my small town didn't have as obvious of needs as my current home (Memphis) in terms of service, there just wasn't much going on for that sort of thing. I now go to the college that Newsweek has declared as "Most Service-Oriented" in the USA and I feel like a fish out of water in that aspect because the most service-oriented things we did was visit old people in nursing homes.
  17. I do not like the 3rd to 1st rule change whatsoever. It may frustrate you to watch since it rarely results in a pick off, but it hampers the running game for the pitcher. That fake to third may induce a baserunner who plans to steal to take off early or have to wait longer before he goes, both of which are wins for the pitcher. What will this rule change do? Save a minute on average per game? Appealing to the lowest common denominator in viewership IMO
  18. http://www.chicagonow.com/art-pale-hose/20...jared-mitchell/ Apparently Buddy Bell has been raving about how good Mitchell has looked this offseason. He's got some big time tools and seems like a pretty good guy, so hopefully this is a sign of things to come.
  19. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jan 28, 2013 -> 01:37 PM) That's a great idea. The other mandatory class should be some sort of personal finance class. Teaching the basics of bank accounts, running a budget, paying bills, retirement accounts, etc. My small public high school had both of those things
  20. I won't quit being a fan, but I really like our current uni's above all other ones we've had. That said, I like the Sunday alternates every year and I wouldn't mind seeing us bust out more retro uniforms or other types of things.
  21. Weber left a lot to be desired, but I do not believe Richardson/Paul/Bertrand are bad players. We should be getting more out of them and we should have had it last season and before as well. I actually believe Abrams has progressed from last season, despite having slowed down since the beginning of the season. He plays an important role on a team where he is the only PG and he is our most productive dribble-drive player (Sorry Brandon, all we can hope for on your drives is a foul instead of a terrible shot/turnover). With that said, Weber has left us with VERY little in terms of the last couple recruiting classes. Egwu should become a good player and I've already mentioned Abrams who IMO is solid, but beyond that there is nothing. Groce has to provide very good players immediately because the recent recruiting has been terrible and the best performers (albeit underperformers) are graduating. Tough spot. At this point, I still find some culpability on the part of Groce but it is unclear how much of the problem is from some of these players having had poor coaching for too long. You can see fits and starts against these good teams where we play like we're well coached, but we always lose it. Also, Groce can shove that hedging on screens up his ass. It is very easy to scheme against and we have no defensive rotation to make up for it. Likewise with the constant switching, how many times do we need to see Egwu rack up fouls guarding a PG?
  22. I watch the Discovery Channel sometimes.
  23. Hockey is most definitely the best sport to watch live. I love being at a baseball game, the atmosphere is amazing, but you miss out on some of the intricacies that you can pick up on by having the perfect angle. Not so at a hockey event.
  24. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 27, 2013 -> 06:31 PM) Michigan dribbles, we leave somebody wide open.
