John Danks surgery/rehab/recovery thread
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 09:25 AM) So tell me... When does John Danks take the bump for the White Sox for the first time this season? Game 163 after about four months of constant speculation. #thereturn

He's supposed to play in games as part of his rehab and I'd just assume he gets that process going sooner rather than later. You let him play whenever he says he's ready, and then Thibs/FO can decide if he's ready for the playoffs.

FWIW, PFF rated both of our new LB's in 2012 Urlacher territory last year. This isn't to say that better coaching, supporting casts, etc. can't change these things.

Our office is also now equipped with this instead of projectors so everyone can present on the LCD's Perfect use of that, it always stresses me out when I need to present something and lord knows how things will go when I'm plugging something into one computer or another

The Democrat Thread
There should be no argument about gay marriage, though. This is who gets a fundamental right -- there's nothing to wait for. The science thing is BS just like it would have been with women or blacks, like someone else says. The fact is that we KNOW that groups are inherently unequal in myriad ways. The key is that the government and law should do as little decision-making as to who is better than who as possible. People become less unequal when we treat them like equals. Also, there's no f***ing disagreement about gay families and their damage to children, etc in the scientific community. TP's rebuttal to George Will's nonsense on the subject pretty much hits the spot. Linky

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 10:05 PM) Well damn. Anyway, this is it as far as I'm concerned regarding Rose's season debut. If he's too big a vagina to get up for the Heat and their historic streak, he's not coming back. My whole perception would change if that was the game he chose. That would be ballsy. We've been assuming he'd choose some lowly opponent to come back against, in a whisper.

Is it just me, or was Minnesota totally irrelevant pre-Tubby Smith? An "okay" run of stripped NCAA appearances in the 90s and that's hit. Tubby hasn't exactly been sub-par there.

Sox looking at Harang/Lilly/Capuano
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 01:01 AM) I can't remember the reason why, or where I heard this, but I heard something that Hector's screwball is a lot more effective when he in a starters role. Maybe it's because he can pepper it in more often in a start when he needs it every 3rd or 4th batter, rather than just *wanting* to use it in his 1-2 innings of relief because he may only get to see 3-6 hitters. I don't even know if that makes sense. You're absolutely right. This is something that I always thought last year and he has confirmed this in interviews. It is generally true with pitchers, it is hard to use much of your repertoire in the span of a few batters. Hector's strength is not just his screwball but the vastness of his repertoire, but that's minimized out of the pen. He doesn't have a single great offspeed pitch, but each one is passable. As a reliever, he has to make himself basically a two pitch pitcher with only one great pitch. As a starter, he's a 4-5 pitch pitcher and you never know what's coming. He has said the screwball in particular can take an inning or so to start getting over the plate and coming out of the bullpen deterred him from using it since strikes are at such a premium coming out of the pen. No opportunity to waste a few pitches or a batter feeling for your offspeed pitch. As far as the Sox go, we don't need Hector in the bullpen either. A third lefty? He's not even that great at getting lefties out.

2013 Spring Training catch all thread
QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 24, 2013 -> 10:39 PM) In my opinion, it's one of the weakest benches I can remember the Sox having going into the season. However, I thought the one last year was going to be fantastic and it ended up being terrible until some acquisitions were made. I like Gimenez as a utility guy and almost certainly has to outproduce what we had from our swing IF guys last year. Gillaspie should get plenty of time playing 3B against tough righties and pinch hitting late in games. Gimenez seems capable, but let's be honest it isn't often you're going to think much of your backup C. Wise is Wise -- a career backup that does what he does just fine. There's a reason he's not a starter, but there's a reason he's here too.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Mar 24, 2013 -> 05:58 PM) Sanchez will be the backup SS. Angel Sanchez, Hector Gimenez, DeWayne Wise, Connor Gillaspie - your 2013 White Sox bench. My current assessment of that bench is...it doesn't suck.

Sox looking at Harang/Lilly/Capuano
QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 24, 2013 -> 10:01 PM) I'll never understand why they didn't go into ST thinking that Santiago was going to be a starter. Santiago went into ST thinking he was a starter. He told the guys on the Score that he was stretched out to 75 pitches before reporting to camp and "I'm not doing that to be a closer." Somewhere along the lines the plans changed. It doesn't make sense since it isn't a big deal to prepare a guy for a starting regimen and send him to a pen whereas doing the inverse is very difficult to do. He is by far our most MLB ready starter...I don't mind Axe, but he is just not a long-term option and Hector looks like he really could be. In general, Hector is a waste in the bullpen. It maximizes his weaknesses and minimizes his strengths. If they are certain John will be ready after a week or two, this isn't a big deal. If you might end up needing two months of a Danks replacement, you've f***ed up and getting Ted Lilly won't fix it. FWIW, I think this is bogus.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 24, 2013 -> 10:28 PM) Biggest issue, in my opinion, is that you're losing 3 players who spread the court very well and bringing in a lot of guys more known for their mid-range game. Not quite sure where the perimeter scoring will come from them the next few years. Agreed. Might have a new identity come next year. Hope I don't have to watch 40 games of Abrams chucking threes.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 24, 2013 -> 10:25 PM) I think he can easily get the talent level back to the level of this squad, but Brandon Paul's ability to either single-handedly win a game for his team or lose a game might not be easily replaced. Groce did coach well tonight, as Larranaga made some terrible decisions during this game. Yeah, when I say talent I really basically just mean Brandon Paul. There were some major negatives of having him as the main option, but the positives will be very hard to replace.

On the bright side, Groce outcoached Larranaga by a ton. That's a huge plus going forward, but I'm worried that we won't have the same kind of talent going forward either. Hope he can recruit, too!
