Freddy Garcia speculation (Closed - Garcia Signs W/Mets)
chisox2334 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
All quiet on the Freddy Garcia front on Monday, but look for the free-agent starting pitcher to make a decision sometime this week. As it looks now, the White Sox, Mets and Rangers are still in on the big right-hander, with the Yankees’ interest fading. There has been some speculation that the White Sox are no longer interested in Garcia after they signed another injury-prone veteran _ Bartolo Colon _ last week. That’s not necessarily true. Given Colon’s physical troubles over the past three seasons, there is still plenty of interest in Garcia on the South Side. And even if Colon does manage to stay off the disabled list, they still need a No. 5 starter. Either way, the Sox are in a good situation. If they get Garcia, that buys more time to develop promising left-hander Aaron Poreda. If they don’t get Garcia, Poreda, Clayton Richard, Jeff Marquez, Lance Broadway and possibly Jack Egbert can compete for the final spot in the starting rotation when spring training opens on Feb. 15. -
Kenny might not be done : GM Kenny Williams is apparently willing to give some young position players (3B Josh Fields, CF Jerry Owens, 2Bs Jayson Nix and Chris Getz) a chance to show what they can do this season. But when it comes to pitching _ particularly the starting rotation _ Kenny prefers experience. That was evident on Thursday, when Bartolo Colon signed a one-year deal to step in as the No. 4 starter. And don’t be surprised if Freddy Garcia agrees to a similar deal within the next few days. As reported in the Daily Herald Thursday, Garcia is strongly considering returning to the White Sox. When asked, indirectly, if the addition of Colon completes the starting five, Williams coyly said: “We’ll see.” That is code for no, but Garcia might get a better offer from the Mets, Yankees or Rangers. Either way, Colon’s presence probably means Jeff Marquez (acquired from the Yankees in the Nick Swisher trade) is likely headed for Class AAA Charlotte, which is the right spot. If Garcia heads elsewhere, Marquez, Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard are positioned to compete for the fifth starter’s spot.

from daily herald and quotes from Garcia's agent and ozzie at the end : he White Sox' starting rotation features Mark Buehrle, Gavin Floyd, John Danks and two big question marks. One of those could be erased within the next few days if Freddy Garcia decides to return to the South Side. A source Wednesday confirmed that the 33-year-old Garcia is considering signing with the Sox, while the Mets, Rangers and Yankees also are in the mix. Major-league sources Wednesday also reported that veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon and the Sox have agreed on a one-year contract, pending a physical. Colon pitched for the White Sox in 2003. Meanwhile, Chris Leible, who works for the agency (Peter E. Greenberg and Associates) representing Garcia, intimated the free-agent starter could be a good fit for the Sox. "We're talking to several teams that have an interest," Leible said Wednesday night. "We're just kind of waiting for the right situation, the right opportunity. There's really not a timetable, but he'd like to get settled in at some point soon. "Freddy really enjoyed playing for them (White Sox). He got a ring there, and he was a big reason they won the ring." Garcia was a workhorse for the 2005 White Sox, who rolled through the playoffs and swept the Houston Astros in the World Series. Acquired in a trade from the Seattle Mariners on June 27, 2004, Garcia started for the Sox through 2006 and was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for Floyd and Gio Gonzalez. In 82 starts for the White Sox, Garcia was 40-21 with a 4.24 ERA. The big right-hander made only 11 starts for Philadelphia in 2007 and was 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA before season-ending shoulder surgery. Garcia made a comeback with the Tigers late last season and was 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA in 3 starts. He was on the mound for Detroit on Sept. 29 at U.S. Cellular Field in a game the Sox needed to win to force a tiebreaking game against the Minnesota Twins for first place in the AL Central. Garcia allowed 2 runs over 5 innings before exiting with shoulder pain in the Tigers' 8-2 loss. Garcia pitched winter ball in his native Venezuela at the end of the season but cut his stay short with more shoulder discomfort. That might raise another red flag, but Leible said a subsequent MRI showed no structural damage. "The MRI was clean and he feels really good," Leible said. "He just went to winter ball to get some innings, but he wasn't going to push it." Manager Ozzie Guillen's presence can only help the White Sox land Garcia, who is married to Guillen's niece. Currently vacationing on a "remote island," Guillen sent word through White Sox spokesman Bob Beghtol on Wednesday that he hasn't talked to Garcia recently.

just let everyone know coming from Heyman: free agent starter Freddy Garcia "is expected to make a deal in coming days." Heyman says the Yankees, Mets, Rangers, and White Sox are interested. About a month ago, Jason Beck reported that an MRI on Garcia's arm revealed shoulder tightness but no structural damage.

from SI : • The White Sox have been asking teams for top pitching prospects for Dye but aren't necessarily insisting that those prospects be within a year of the big leagues, as teams often do when they dangle stars. But no one has bitten yet. The Chicago Sun-Times reported the Angels could now be in the mix for Dye.

Vlad would dh, hunter in center, dye in right, and platoon with matthews and rivera in left.

Life “under, under the radar," is the way White Sox general manager Ken Williams is now choosing to conduct business this off-season. That means rumors are mere whispers from dark corners, while actual news that is uncovered is met with a standard “no comment’’ from the offices on 35th and Shields. Chone Figgins slides into third base on a triple as White Sox third baseman Joe Crede waits for the throw. But the one name that has been popping up time and time again over the last few seasons is once again being heard the last two weeks. That means you Chone Figgins. According to a major-league scout, the Angels are the latest team to express interest in acquiring Jermaine Dye now that the Mark Teixeira ship has set sail to New York. Unlike the talks with the Reds that stalled during the Winter Meetings, the Sox and Angels actually have a fit. The South Siders covet speed – with Williams telling the Sun-Times back in June that Figgins was “interesting.’’ The Angels want a power bat to offer some protection for Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter. The one problem is Los Angeles has a surplus of outfielders in Hunter, Guerrero, Gary Matthews and Juan Rivera, but could convert someone to first base, as well as platoon Guerrero and Matthews in the designated hitter spot. What Dye would bring them is 137 home runs and 378 RBI since 2005 – the most from any American League outfielder in that span. Figgins, who can play third, second and the outfield would give Williams a legitimate lead-off hitter, averaging just over 47 stolen bases a year since ’05. Because of his versatility he could fill a hole at second or move into the outfield, also allowing Carlos Quentin to move to his more natural outfield position in right field. According to the source, the Angels are not thrilled with what’s left on the free agent outfield market and do not want to be pawns in the on-going Manny Ramirez game. Dye and Hunter are good friends and the Angels are not one of the teams listed on Dye’s no-trade list.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb...0,3626524.story The Dodgers aren't among the teams that are pursuing Pedro Martinez, Colletti said. Martinez's agent, Fernando Cuza, said today that his client has narrowed his choices to two National League teams and two American League teams.
