LAS VEGAS -- The words "slow day" rarely, if ever, have been attached to describing any sort of time period spent in the city of Las Vegas. But that precise phrase was how general manager Ken Williams referred to the White Sox itinerary on Wednesday at the Bellagio during the final stages of the 2008 Winter Meetings. No trades or signings in the immediate future. No meetings with other teams for the White Sox, but also no worries seemingly coming from a relaxed Williams when he spoke to the Chicago media. "We're a club that is very proactive during the season ... there really isn't an offseason for us," Williams said. "We don't have to come to these meetings to schedule meetings because we've had those conversations with people through the course of the year, and as soon as the offseason starts, through the General Managers Meetings, so there is no script that we have to follow. I don't take meetings simply because. I don't take meetings that haven't already produced some substance in conversation. "Give me an idea on what you want to do, and I will tell you if there is a need for us to sit down. I think it's false hustle." With no plans to select a player in Thursday's Rule 5 Draft, at least as of Wednesday evening, Williams will depart for home Thursday with his words from Monday's first interview session trailing behind him. On that opening day, Williams stated how he would be surprised if there were any surprises on the horizon in regard to possible deals. Instead, Williams had a little fun in talking about his day's worth of activities. He avoided the gaming tables but did watch a movie earlier, followed by the viewing of CNN and the WGN News, catching up on the trials and travails of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. Reports of the White Sox and Reds once again talking about a Jermaine Dye-Homer Bailey swap were dismissed as nothing more than Williams talking to Walt Jocketty, the Reds general manager and Williams' friend, at a social gathering on Tuesday night. One more question did pop up regarding Dye, using an apropos betting theme to ask if Williams thought Dye would be his right fielder at the start of the 2009 campaign. "I thought I was going to escape that question today," said Williams with a laugh. "Jermaine is still on the club and on the board and in the lineup. I don't have anything different to tell you guys than anything I told you yesterday." Earlier offseason trades involving Nick Swisher and Javier Vazquez, along with the free-agent signing of Dayan Viciedo probably set to be announced at the end of this week, have Williams excited with the necessary blend of youthful talent and dependable veterans he now has in place. He also has infused speed and aggressiveness into a previously home run-based attack. These deals might not have brought a high-profile return such as Cleveland's apparent signing of free-agent closer Kerry Wood, as an example. Yet, Williams feels comfortable with having the right overall blend to defend the team's 2008 American League Central title and beyond, not to mention putting himself in position to add valuable pieces down the line. "Obviously, the plan was to fortify our Minor League system. We were well on our way with the last two Drafts [White Sox scouting director] Doug Laumann and his crew have put together," Williams said. "We just added nine guys to our system, whether it be trade or Viciedo, we added nine guys, nine plus-type, high-ceiling type guys. "Part of the plan with that is the extra two picks we're getting in next year's Draft for [Orlando] Cabrera's free agency. That was a necessity, that had to be done, and was part of the plan. Now, as you sit, take a step back and look at the Major League team, you say, 'OK, what now do we have to do that's consistent with our long-term plan, what can we do for the short-term to make sure we are leaning in a better way toward a championship?' That's kind of where we are right now." Manager Ozzie Guillen expressed the same sort of optimism in Williams' work before departing for Venezuela on Wednesday night. In past Winter Meetings, Guillen's exit somehow has translated into big White Sox moves to follow. But if Wednesday's silence was any indication, that trend will not continue on in Las Vegas. "Some of that is by design, but no, I can't remember ... I was commenting to my staff upstairs that I can't remember this little dialogue," Williams said. "It's just a departure to a certain degree of what we're used to. It doesn't stop us from playing the games internally about who is out there, what can we potentially do to make an impact. It will be a little bit of a later offseason, maybe."

hey rock raines do you know what the projected payroll the w sox want payroll be this yr?

Ken Williams’ eyes turned red Tuesday when ahe was asked about his faith in unproven youngsters Josh Fields, Jerry Owens and Brian Anderson. But the White Sox general manager was more diplomatic about assessing the back end of his rotation, where youngsters Clayton Richard, Jeff Marquez and Aaron Poreda currently are competing for two spots. “Things can change,” Williams told a group of reporters while standing far away from the congested areas of the Bellagio where agents and some executives congregated. “Decisions are evolving as we travel down some roads that are a little uncertain right now. You can walk in the lobby and see how much uncertainty there is in regards to free agents or trades. “All I’m saying now is I have an open mind, and if we have to go in the season with the young guys, then so be it.” One National League GM suspected Williams was employing a method reminiscent of four winters ago, when he traded Carlos Lee and let Magglio Ordonez go to free agency. That allowed him to reshape the team and sign Tadahito Iguchi and A.J. Pierzynski after the winter meetings. But Williams said his projected player payroll is currently at its limit. The Sox have earmarked more than $82 million for 11 players for the 2009 season, and that doesn’t include closer Bobby Jenks, who is likely to receive a $5 million raise as a first-year arbitration-eligible player. Williams would gain more flexibility if he can trade right fielder Jermaine Dye and his $11.5 million salary. But Williams spent the afternoon in a staff meeting and said he doubted that any moves would be made by the winter meetings’ conclusion Thursday. The Sox haven’t talked to Atlanta since last week’s Javier Vazquez trade, thus quelling a report that the two teams were engaged in serious talks involving Dye. The Sox, however, could wait until January to see if the market became more saturated as Friday’s deadline to tender contracts to all unsigned players approaches. Williams was just as evasive when asked if he would pursue a free agent now. “Well, if I answered that question, it would go against my tactics of trying to mislead you guys as much as I can,” Williams said. “So, I just have to continue on with my pattern of dodging and weaving. We generally have more success when we are operating out of sight.”

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap

i never said twins are godly... I just said they have best starting pitching staff in central divsion at the moment. That can change as offseason goes along. But for w sox we are not there because we dont even have 4th or 5th starter yet. I will give credit when credit is do and they have developed a decent pitching staff in a year where no one even heard of most of them. -

Twins rotation right now is at top of divsion due the consistency they have and it showed last season. I didnt think twins rotation at begining was all that great. But, they got some good looking kids in that rotation. Detriot right now is a mess. But positive for them they will have gallaraga, verlander and hopefully for them bonderman. Royals still devloping but davies and greinke are real deal. Clev looks to try and develop young starters with westbrook and lee. -

i believe in mr. raines and sox will be adding to payroll very soon. -
I just don't see with the log jam of infielders that white sox are going to spend the money on a furcal or hudson. Who could easily show their age and injury issues come in. We did that with pods already and you don't want to get burn paying money to guys like that. I just hope that ozzie decides to teach this team fundementals. I am more worried about how we going to lay down a bunt, actually do a run down correctly, and of course teach the pitchers how to stop runners stealing on the catcher all day long.
-
sceanrio you are correct and I indeed know who hudson was. I just believe that money and years he wants that he will not live up to that and we will be kicking ourselves in the end. I wishe we had hudson back in tor 3-4 yrs ago.

I do remeber as well alexi wasnt very good in center as well. If W sox didnt think alexi wasnt good in infield compared to center they def. would of have alexi out there in outfield Seen that swisher was benched. Not to metion it was almost predetermined before season ended that kenny and staff wanted alexi at ss. I just believe kenny dosent want to get burned here. Furcal when healthy is good at the top of the order. But, the key word is healthy. I know for sure kenny and ozzie dont want to play scot pods thing all over again whether he was healthy or not to play. Especially not at 13 mil.
