  1. It will be tough. The motivation will be tough," said Guillen, talking to a group of reporters during Opening Day of SoxFest at the Palmer House Hilton on Friday. "I don't blame Juan for this, but I think as long as he shows up with the right attitude, we are going to give him a shot to play. "He has no other choice but to have a good attitude. Show up with the right attitude, and you have a better chance with me and our staff than if you come like you lost your job. You didn't lose your job. If you make the team, you will get at-bats somewhere." Guillen added that Uribe's impending free-agent status after the 2008 season worried him, with Uribe possibly coming in thinking that he needs to play every day this season so he can continue to play every day in the future. General manager Ken Williams said that he talked with Martin Arburua, Uribe's agent, and learned Uribe was not happy about having to fight for playing time. Williams also pointed out that Uribe knew what the team expected from him last year in regard to putting up better at-bats to go with his solid defense, and also knew the ramifications if those targets weren't hit. Even with the position switch, though, Uribe will be in the mix at second base, with Danny Richar, Alexei Ramirez and even Pablo Ozuna joining the Spring Training battle for a starting job. In Guillen's mind, Uribe has to look more at what there is to gain as opposed to dwelling on what he lost. "Juan might not understand why we [brought] in Cabrera," he said. "We need leadership. We [didn't] bring a shortstop. We [brought] in a player. "That will be a pretty good battle at second base. I will talk to Juan, let him know what we think about him and about our situation."

They are worried and why they are even looking. So it's wait and see apoorach.
  6. alright how about we talk about this. Does anyone really know what price of Crede is now compare to being shown at spring training?
  7. also from rotoworld today The Mercury News reports that the Giants will monitor Joe Crede this spring, and if healthy, there's a "good chance" they could acquire him for a pitcher. The Giants have reportedly been shopping Matt Cain, who would be a solid fit in the back of a Chicago rotation that is starved for experience. Giants special assistant Ron Schueler, the former White Sox GM, has been pushing the team to acquire Crede.
  8. rotworold: The Giants are no longer interested in signing Pedro Feliz. "We made a two-year offer, which he rejected. We've pretty much moved on from there," said GM Brian Sabean. Joe Crede and Scott Rolen could become targets at third for San Francisco, who is still looking for a regular at the position.
  9. From mlbrumors blogpost.com White Sox like Lowry?: The White Sox might pursue a trade for pitcher Noah Lowry. Lowry is being shopped by the Giants, and could definitely land Joe Crede from the White Sox. Stay tuned.
  10. rotoworld's latsest on him The Rangers have reportedly dropped out of the bidding for Freddy Garcia after getting a look at his medical records. Texas is still considering Jason Jennings and Bartolo Colon. The Mets appear to be the favorites for Garcia, though he's still considering waiting until he finishes rehabbing his shoulder and then signing with a team during the season. He hopes to be ready in May or June.
  11. He will be a chicago white sox CHICAGO -- The White Sox took another step toward revamping their shaky 2007 bullpen by adding Octavio Dotel to the mix. The two-year, $11 million deal probably won't be announced until Tuesday or Wednesday, with a decision to be made by the team on removing a current player from the 40-man roster. "It's just about done with the White Sox," said Dan Horwits, Dotel's agent, of the deal on Monday afternoon. "We are just finishing up the last details, but I don't foresee them causing any problems. And then he'll be part of the White Sox." Dotel, who turned 34 this past Thanksgiving, has a 3.76 ERA with 82 saves during 428 career appearances. The hard-throwing right-hander has fanned 773 over 641 innings, including 41 strikeouts over 30 2/3 innings for the Royals and Braves in 2007. Being part of the American League Central for two-thirds of the previous campaign gives Dotel a strong working knowledge of the division, as well as the White Sox as a team. He chose the South Siders, even though he will be working as a setup man for closer Bobby Jenks. "He had places to go where he could close, and he had places to go where he was going to set up," said Horwits, echoing comments he made to MLB.com on Friday. "But he wanted to go to a team that he thought could win for the next couple of years, along with the comfort level of knowing certain players on the team or in management, such as [manager] Ozzie [Guillen] himself. "Those type of factors weighed out," Horwits added. Bringing on Dotel gives the White Sox a solid core of four veteran relievers at the back of the bullpen, with free agent Scott Linebrink joining Jenks and left-hander Matt Thornton. Mike MacDougal, whose 2007 struggles were part of the reason for offseason relief change, could figure in the bullpen equation but also could be shopped by the White Sox. During the final month of the 2007 season, pitching coach Don Cooper explained how he would like a couple of veteran arms added to the bullpen mix. Six combined years and $30 million later, the White Sox appear to have that upgrade.
  12. By Mark Gonzales, 3:02 p.m. The Chicago White Sox could announce the signing of veteran reliever Octavio Dotel to a two-year contract within the next 24 hours. "We're just working out some details," agent Dan Horwits said Monday. Dotel, 34, will further fortify a bullpen that had a 5.47 ERA last season. The Sox already signed Scott Linebrink to a four-year, $19 million contract in November, and Dotel's deal is expected to be worth around $11 million. The Sox have pursued Dotel in the past few years, only to have him sign with the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals. Horwits assured that his client is healthy after recovering from reconstructive right elbow surgery and a right shoulder strain in the past three years. Dotel's signing creates a longjam in the bullpen but gives the Sox more trade flexibility. Mike MacDougal will be guaranteed $4.95 million over the next two seasons, and the Sox hold a $3.75 million option for 2010.
  13. from cowley As for the other rumor surrounding the Sox the last few days, concerning the potential signing of often-injured pitcher Bartolo Colon, the Sox did take a look at him recently, but sources indicated that Colon wanted more than a one-year deal. The Royals now appear to be the front-runner to land the 2005 Cy Young Award winner.
  14. More on what Dotel's agent saying "The White Sox are definitely a team Octavio has interest in," agent Dan Horwits said. "There's mutual interest. Our discussions have been intensifying with the White Sox. We'll see where they lead." Dotel has other offers, some for one year, some for two years with an option, some to be the closer. With the Sox he'd be a middle-inning reliever. "He would be fine being a setup man," Horwits said. The 34-year-old right-hander was the closer for part of last season in Kansas City, then finished the year with Atlanta. Combined, he was 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA and 11 saves. He struck out 41 batters in 302/3 innings. Dotel's time was limited last summer with strained oblique and back muscles. In 2005 he underwent reconstructive elbow surgery and pitched just 251/3 innings combined in 2005-06. Among other teams known to have interest in Dotel are the Orioles. He might be a closer there, but the possible deal is believed to be for only one year. Dotel was paid $5 million last year. The Sox's bullpen had a 5.47 ERA last season, its worst since at least 1957. In a 65-game stretch beginning May 9, relievers had a 3-14 record and a 7.46 ERA while blowing 11 save opportunities. •Individual-game tickets for Sox home games will go on sale at 10 a.m. Feb. 15 at Ticketmaster outlets or www.whitesox.com or by calling 866-769-4263.

  20. ESPN's Buster Olney says he heard free agent Bartolo Colon was on the verge of signing with the Mets last week, but the team backed off after taking a closer look at the condition of his right arm. With White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen in attendence, Colon allowed three runs and six hits in five innings in his postseason start in the Dominican Winter League on Thursday. He struck out two and walked none. Source: ESPN Insider Related: White Sox, Mets
  21. was jeff liefer HICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on minor-league contracts with infielders Brad Eldred, Royce Huffman, Jeff Liefer and Michael Rouse, catchers Paul Phillips and Ryan Smith, infielder/outfielder Jason Bourgeois, outfielder Miguel Negron and right-handed pitcher D.J. Carrasco. All nine players, in addition to infielder Chris Getz, have received non-roster invites to the club's spring training camp in Tucson, Ariz. Bourgeois, 26, combined to hit .306 (153-500) in 127 games between Class AA Birmingham and Class AAA Charlotte last season. He led all White Sox farmhands in stolen bases (38) and ranked fifth in average. Carrasco, 30, has gone 14-15 with a 4.81 ERA (61 ER/114.2 IP) and two saves in 101 major-league appearances (22 starts) with Kansas City (2003-05). The righty went 5-14 with a 6.68 ERA (102 ER/137.1 IP) in 34 games (22 starts) with Class AAA Tucson last season. Eldred, 27, spent the majority of the 2007 season with Class AAA Indianapolis, hitting .209 (65-311) with 15 home runs and 45 RBI in 86 games. He also appeared in 19 games with Pittsburgh. Eldred was named the Pirates' Minor-League Player of the Year in 2004 after totaling 38 home runs and a minor league-best 137 RBI between Class A Lynchburg and Class AA Altoona. Getz, 24, hit .299 (83-278) with a .382 on-base percentage with Birmingham in 2007, but was limited to 72 games due to a right shin injury. He was named to the Southern League midseason All-Star Team and reached base safely in 84.7 percent (61-72) of his games played with the Barons. Getz, who compiled a .360 on-base percentage with Phoenix in the 2007 Arizona Fall League, was selected by the White Sox in the fourth round of the June 2005 First-Year Player Draft. Liefer, 33, has appeared in 288 major-league contests with the White Sox (1999-2002), Montreal (2003), Tampa Bay (2003), Milwaukee (2004) and Cleveland (2005). He hit .244 (142-582) with 25 home runs and 79 RBI in 209 games with the Sox. Liefer, who spent the 2006-07 seasons with the Seibu Lions of the Japanese Pacific League, was originally selected by Chicago in the first round (25th overall) in the June 1995 free-agent draft. Phillips, 30, hit .238 (48-202) in 58 games with Class AAA Omaha in 2007 and .143 (2-14) in eight contests with Kansas City. He owns a .258 (39-151) average over four major-league seasons with the Royals (2004-07). White Sox pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Saturday, February 16, with physicals and a workout scheduled for the same day. Position players are to report and undergo physicals on Thursday, February 21. The first full-squad workout will also take place at that time.
  22. mlbtraderumors.com saying their is talk Just got a solid tip that the Angels and White Sox are discussing a possible Paul Konerko deal. That's all I've got for the moment; no idea how serious these talks may be. I do recall the Angels' making an offer to Konerko in the winter of 2005-06. Konerko does have a limited no-trade clause to consider. updated A few more tidbits. Some names being bandied about include Ervin Santana, Howie Kendrick, and Chone Figgins. Of course, all three would not be in the deal. The Sox also seek relief help.
  23. Now excuse all the torches from the growing collection of angry villagers, sit back and see what White Sox general manager Ken Williams has up his sleeve. » Click to enlarge image Aaron Rowand signed with the San Francisco Giants today. (AP) RELATED STORIES • Aaron Rowand signs with Giants There has to be something, right? It depends on whom you ask. In an offseason of one body blow after another suffered by the GM, two more were delivered today with the news that the Cubs signed Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome, despite the Sox reportedly bidding more. And then the Sox finding out that free agent – and South Side cult hero – Aaron Rowand inked a five-year deal with San Francisco. The Sox wouldn’t give more than a four-year offer. As far as Fukudome, a Sox source said they were told by his agent, Joe Urbon, that despite the higher bid by the Sox, the reasoning behind the decision was that Fukudome wanted to be an organization’s first Japanese player, as well as he wanted to play his natural position of right field. The Sox had him penciled in as a left fielder, and have already had two Japanese players on their roster in Shingo Takatsu and Tadahito Iguchi. While the Sox are still in “operation shutdown’’ with the media because of what Williams deemed leaks during the Winter Meetings, word from behind the sealed walls is that there is still a plan in place to make changes. The options, however, are significantly dwindling. The original plan was to stun the baseball world this offseason by trading for Orlando Cabrera and Miguel Cabrera, and then signing free agents Torii Hunter and Scott Linebrink, all by Thanksgiving. Orlando Cabrera and Linebrink were accomplished, but when the Angels came from nowhere to nab Hunter away for $90 million over five years, the dominos started falling. Then came Miguel Cabrera going to Detroit, and now Fukudome headed to the crosstown rivals, with Rowand off to the Bay. Through all the carnage, the Sox still don’t have a proven center fielder or left fielder, have two third basemen, and no veteran leadoff hitter. The hope now is that Boston does not trade Coco Crisp to Minnesota for Johan Santana, and the Sox can make a deal for the speedy center fielder. Angels speedster Chone Figgins could also be on the radar, but Williams won’t make a deal just to make one. No matter how bruised he’s feeling these days. 24. Thome, Jenks want White Sox teammates to focus on own jobs By Mark Gonzales Tribune staff reporter December 11, 2007, 10:43 PM CST As general manager Ken Williams absorbs scrutiny for every attempted move this winter, Jim Thome and Bobby Jenks suggest White Sox players take care of their own business. "We're in a division where obviously Detroit got a lot better and Cleveland as well," Thome said Tuesday. "The key for us is when we come to spring training … we have to be serious from Day 1. We have to be ready, focused and understand we're in a division where we can't have a whole lot of lapses during the year." Thome and Jenks participated in the Sox holiday party at U.S. Cellular Field in which food, gifts and entertainment were provided to about 500 children from 20 Boys and Girls Clubs in the Chicago area. They helped distribute hot dogs and soft drinks and talked to the students. Jenks brought his wife and two young children. For Thome, whose wife, Andrea, gave birth to the couple's second child (Landon) last month, the party brought back memories of previous functions in Cleveland when he dressed as Santa Claus and his wife as Mrs. Claus. Thome and Jenks are hopeful Williams can bring the Sox some presents before pitchers and catchers report to spring training in slightly more than two months. "[Williams] is going to get praise or beat down no matter what the moves [are]," said the 6-foot-3-inch, 275-pound Jenks, who looked fit. "It's like that every year. He has made some good moves. I don't know about all his moves in the past, but he has brought some good players over here. We got the guy over there (Thome)." Jenks, unlike Thome, said Williams hasn't kept him abreast of the club's off-season plans. But he realizes he has to "go out there, get your job done, get in shape and be ready for the season. "There are still things we can do to improve, whether it's getting that Japanese outfielder (Kosuke Fukudome), or trading some of our younger guys for maybe (Pittsburgh outfielder) Jason Bay," Jenks said. "One of those types of moves are still there. "Until spring training starts, anything can happen." Jenks expressed mixed feelings about last week's trade that brought All-Star third baseman Miguel Cabrera from Florida to Detroit and made the Tigers' lineup more formidable. "It's just one more guy we'll have to get out during the season," Jenks said. "It was tough enough for us last year, then throwing that into the fire, obviously they have the momentum on their side. We have to go out there and fight for ours and show people we deserve it and we're a team that can compete." Jenks stressed the importance of the players concentrating on their off-season preparation and not being consumed with Williams' plans. "What we saw last year wasn't the teams of the past," Jenks said. "I've only been here since 2005, but I'm a baseball fan and have followed all the teams. There's some winning tradition in this organization, and what happened last year was like a wake-up call. Let's get back to business. "There's hope to have a few more moves going on this year. But if there's not, we'll have to go out in spring training and battle and see who is going to win spots, whether it's in the bullpen or outfield."
