  1. Japan ball.com said he has signed with us. Nomo agrees to minor league deal with White Sox email this print this TUCSON, Arizona, March 1 (14:19) Kyodo Japanese right-hander Hideo Nomo has agreed to terms on a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox, Director of Player Development Dave Wilder said Wednesday. Nomo, 37, is expected to report to Triple-A Charlotte next week after the White Sox announce the deal in the next few days, Wilder said. Nomo started the 2005 season with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and posted his 200th career win in a 5-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on June 15. He was released by the Devil Rays in mid-July after struggling on the mound with a 5-8 record and a 7.24 ERA in 19 starts. He signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees in late July and stayed at Triple-A Columbus for the rest of the season. Nomo compiled a 78-46 record in Japan from 1990-94 and has posted 123-109 in the major leagues, pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets, the Brewers, the Detroit Tigers, the Boston Red Sox and the Devil Rays

WhiteSox.OnlineRewardCenter.com The Associated Press December 20, 2005, 6:57 PM CST The White Sox bolstered the tough rotation that won them the World Series on Tuesday, finalizing their trade for Javier Vazquez with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The White Sox got Vazquez and $4 million from the Diamondbacks for right-hander Orlando Hernandez, reliever Luis Vizcaino and minor league outfielder Chris Young. The trade was initially agreed to last Wednesday pending player physicals and the approval of commissioner Bud Selig, who had to sign off on the deal because of the cash involved. Arizona is to give the Sox $1 million next season and $3 million in 2007 to offset the salary of Vazquez, who is owed $24 million over the next two years. When the Diamondbacks acquired Vazquez from the Yankees last year, New York sent Arizona $9 million to cover part of the right-hander's salary. "This deal gives us some short-term help -- two pitchers that can help our club -- and in our minds a future everyday front-line center fielder who's not that far away, which is hard to find," Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes said. Byrnes said the Diamondbacks believe Hernandez is "closer to 40" than his listed age of 36. He is signed through next season. "He's pitched a lot of innings in his life and as with any pitcher it's not a perfect shoulder but it's one we felt was a worthwhile risk," Byrnes said. "We've got to be smart in the way we use him but when he's right we believe he's one of the best pitchers in baseball." Byrnes said he "wouldn't close the door" on the possibility Young could make the big club this spring but he would have to earn that spot and not get it just because of his bright future. "We feel like he's relatively close but we also don't want to rush his progression to the major leagues just because we're so happy to get him," Byrnes said. The Diamondbacks, who had talks with Kenny Lofton, remain interested in finding a veteran center fielder for a short-term deal while Young hones his skills, Byrnes said. The White Sox had one of the toughest staffs in the majors last year, leading the American League with a 3.61 ERA, and their starters pitched four straight complete games in the AL championship series. But general manager Ken Williams wants to make his team a perennial contender, not a one-year wonder, and he's already made deals this offseason to re-sign first baseman Paul Konerko, acquire DH Jim Thome and utility player Rob Mackowiak in trades, and lock up catcher A.J. Pierzynski. Now he's turning his attention to his pitching staff. Vazquez was obtained by the New York Yankees from Montreal after the 2003 season and was an All-Star in his first season with New York, going 14-9 with a 4.75 ERA. But he won just one of his last nine regular-season starts and was traded to Arizona last January as part of the deal that sent Randy Johnson to the Yankees. He went 11-15 with a 4.42 ERA for the Diamondbacks this year, and asked for a trade in the offseason so he could be closer to his home in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Vazquez has an 89-93 career record in eight seasons with the Montreal Expos, the Yankees and the Diamondbacks. But he ranks fifth among major-league pitchers since 2001 with 970 strikeouts, and has topped 200 innings in five seasons and 190 strikeouts in four seasons. Vazquez's best year was in 2003, when he went 13-12 for the Expos with a career-best 3.24 ERA and 241 strikeouts. The addition of Vazquez gives Williams some leeway if he can't reach longterm agreements with Jon Garland and Jose Contreras, who can become free agents after next season. Mark Buehrle is signed for 2006 with the club holding an option for 2007, and Freddy Garcia is signed through 2007. The White Sox also have 6-foot-7 Brandon McCarthy, who was impressive down the stretch as a rookie, going 3-1 in the final month when he made five starts. Hernandez has a career record of 70-49, spending most of his time in the major leagues with the Yankees. El Duque started last season in the Sox's rotation and was 7-2 before the All-Star break and 2-7 afterward. He had two stints on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. The veteran right-hander made the postseason roster as a reliever and pitched out of bases-loaded jams in the third games of both the division series win over the Red Sox and the World Series victory against the Astros. El Duque is signed for next year, with a base salary of $4,625,000. He can earn an additional $2 million in bonuses based on innings, getting the full amount if he pitches 205 innings Vizcaino joined the White Sox last season as part of a trade with Milwaukee that also landed the Sox leadoff hitter Scott Podsednik and sent Carlos Lee to the Brewers. He pitched well in the second half after a slow start and finished 6-5 with a 3.73 ERA. Young batted .277 with 26 homers and 77 RBIs for Double-A Birmingham last season and was one of the Sox's top prospects.
  6. this will get done very soon just waiting for results and obviosuly results sox had were good. All we gotta do is wait for new one get done and then will be fine.
  7. like I said theres nothing to be worried about. No one got nervous about the completion of marte for cub-killar deal. But, since it's el duque people worry. Until you hear someone from site, raido, or newspaper somethings wrong then you can worry.
  8. no offense but where has anyone said that el duque phsyical went wrong? until you hear something then when can speculate whats going on. Remember two wweks ago wensday we accepted for cub-killar and it was not announced till tuesday or even later than that the next week. So everyone calm down.
  9. who knows what happened with vasquez and houstion situation. Their all speculaing and ya sure does seem odd accept our deal then theirs
  10. from mlb.com on arizona homepage Speaking of the Vazquez trade, which also includes cash to the White Sox and pitchers Orlando Hernandez and Jose Vizcaino coming to Arizona, Byrnes said that it could be finalized on Monday or Tuesday
  11. that is why I asked the question because some people say after this season so I am asking. sorry for asking

  13. The dodgers have alos made a call to whitesox
  14. I look at this look what it took get vasquez here. Now look at garland and tell me what fair deal be for him. I say 3b period and minor leaguer.
  15. tell you truth sounds like their speculating on what we want. I take it whitesox want 3b or maybe some bullpen help, or some high prospects. I dont see why kenny go after outfield help when our system has it and anderson has job.
  16. By Ed Sherman Tribune sports media reporter December 15, 2005, 10:40 PM CST This could be quite a Christmas for Tommy John. His daughter Tamara, wife of Bears long snapper Patrick Mannelly, is due to have a baby Christmas Eve. John hopes to celebrate the new arrival by being reunited with the White Sox as the team's radio analyst. The former Sox pitcher is the leading candidate to join Ed Farmer in the booth. Although the Sox and WSCR-AM 670 maintain a final decision hasn't been made, all signs point toward John. John, who met with Sox and WSCR officials last week, is thrilled with the prospect of returning to Chicago. His daughter is here, as well as his son Tommy III, who runs a baseball academy in Lake Forest. "It would be like coming home," said John, a native of Terre Haute, Ind. "When [sox executive Bob Grim] contacted me to come in, it was like a dream come true. I have a passion for baseball. I enjoy talking baseball. I think I would have a lot to offer WSCR, and a lot to offer the fans of the White Sox." Since completing a 26-year career in 1989, John has done broadcast stints with the Yankees, Minnesota, Atlanta and the Charlotte Knights, the Sox's Triple-A affiliate. He interviewed for the White Sox's television job in 1999 but lost out to Darrin Jackson. He also has worked as a coach for Montreal and spent a year managing a Class A team for the Yankees. His talks with the Sox have rekindled old memories. He was one of the Sox's standout starters from 1965 to 1971 before being traded to the Dodgers for Dick Allen. He credits former Sox pitching coach Ray Berres with teaching him how to pitch. John, along with Joel Horlen and Gary Peters, was part of a stellar rotation for the Sox. They nearly won the American League pennant in 1967 despite a team batting average of .225. When asked how that threesome compared to the current Sox starters, John cracked, "Not so good. We're all in our 60s." John is 62, but his arm is still going strong. "Tell Jerry Reinsdorf I still pitch batting practice," John said. "My body may be gone, but the arm's still good." That's a testament to Dr. Frank Jobe's revolutionary surgery on John's left elbow in 1974. "Tommy John Surgery," involving a tendon transplant, resurrected his career and those of countless other pitchers. The crafty left-hander went on to pitch until he was 46, mainly with the Dodgers and Yankees. John recorded 288 victories, had three 20-win seasons, pitched 46 career shutouts and twice was a Cy Young runner-up. He still is hoping for a call from Cooperstown. Despite being shunned by the writers, John believes he has a chance to get in through the veteran's committee in a few years. "It would be exciting if it happened while I was working for the White Sox," John said. As a young pitcher with the Sox, John spent time with future Hall of Fame announcers Bob Elson ("a terrific gin player"), Milo Hamilton and Harry Caray. "Baseball and radio are made for each other," John said. "You get to tell stories and explain a play. Harry once told me, 'If you close your eyes and try to re-create the play in your mind, that's what is going on for the listener at home.' You try to paint the picture." John probably would have an instant rapport with fellow pitcher Farmer, having played in the same era. If he gets the job, John said he will send his new partner a pair of socks for Christmas. "The guy never wears socks," John said. John will be coming to town next week to await the birth of his grandchild. If things work out, he could be sticking around for a long time. Pippen scores These are good times for Scottie Pippen. Fresh off having his number retired by the Bulls, Pippen has landed a prime role with ABC and ESPN. Pippen will join Mike Tirico on ABC's new pregame show, "GMC NBA Nation," making his debut before ABC's Christmas Day doubleheader. Pippen also will make several appearances on ESPN's studio shows throughout the season, including "SportsCenter," "Cold Pizza" and "NBA Fast Break." He will continue to serve as an analyst for "NBA Matchup." [email protected]
  17. things concerning next years roster. 1.) finalized deal for vasquez 2.) sign contreas for 2007 3.) arbitration for garland, crede, piersynski 4.) find a trade partner for garland 5.) who to keep out of timo, harris, gload, or anyone else you can think of
  18. The only reason I say this is once kenny locks up contreas then he will for sure trade garland away. But contreas fights with him on contract siuation then that means leave kenny with option of trading either contreas or garland. It points in their court to either sign at resonable price that kenny thinks or be forced be traded. All articles point contreas coming back and espically hearing kenny's comments make you think he will be retained. Once you fix contract extension to contreas then he for sure trade garland knowing next years staff you will have 1-5.
  19. the down side, Garland is expecting a significant raise after making $3.4 million in 2005. And if another team does have interest, they’d also have to deal with his impending free-agent status. According to a source, the Sox want at least two quality pitching prospects for Garland. With Vazquez and Garland both on the books right now, the White Sox’ estimated payroll for 2006 is $95 million. By trading Garland, the payroll would drop well below $90 million. “It’s kind of a floating number, but we want to check in around $90 million,’’ Williams said of the final payroll. This season, the Sox’ payroll was $75 million. anyone read that part. any opinions that maybe he only wants prospects
  20. Actually I take that back once thats finalized which could be tommrrow and my gut feeling when contreas signs on for another year
  21. nothing will heat up until vasquez to chicago is offical. So everyone calm down for moment
  22. first off we dont make the deicsions thats whitesox orginazation decision. Second next offseason he could be gone due to scot boras being his agent. I will be lookin foward 2006 season.
  23. Sounds like contreas will be signed exstension. Garland is good as gone. We will be adding a pitcher to bullpen. So overall we saved ourselves for 2007
  24. I will believe names in trade when all reports report the same names.
