QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 07:43 AM) I forgot all about that. Why is it the Sox get the worse humans to play for them? I'll bet Maggs could have played in September, when he was under contract, he just wanted to sit on his ass and collect his money. No wonder he kept that away from the team. Why didn't the Sox void his contract and stop payments if he was withholding information he was legally obligated to provide? I would think all that would be spelled out in his contract. I forgot, the Sox are perfect and always do the very best for every player. Like that early retirement gift for Fisk. I wonder who the next ass will be on the team? Who is a free agent in 2006? You can bet that player is going to be a greedy bastard as well. LMAO. Let's all drink the Sox are a charity koolaid. I guess Maggs took a play from Frank's playbook about not returning team phone calls. IIRC Frank didn't bother to return Ozzie's phone calls. So I guess Frank has no class also? Frank's a Hall Of Famer. Please don't mention Magglio's name in the same sentence as his again. And who cares about what may or may not have happened a year ago? Frank and Ozzie had 0 problems with each other last season (despite the media's best attempt to create friction), and the same will be true in 2005.

QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 07:40 AM) This guy is gone and he hired a top gun agent to get him the best deal possible. Maggs looked out for #1 and so did the White Sox. It's the American way. It's unfortunate that sometimes looking out for #1 means people do things that other people take exception to. Ordonez is happy with his new contract, the White Sox are happy with their revamped team. I'm guessing the Sox are equally as happy they don't have to commit all that payroll to one guy. I don't know, sounds like a win-win to me. When a guy leaves town, lots of times there are subtle pot shots that hit the press. This is not something I take personally. He was a good player while he was here but the team didn't win much. Not his fault but he was a key cog. This is pro sports, people come and go. I'm more excited about looking forward, I like the way the team looks. Yup, it's best for everybody. Well, except the poor Tiggers. Like the song goes, 2 out of 3 ain't bad!

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Feb 6, 2005 -> 12:42 PM) Hitting so many homeruns weren't the problem. Hitting so many solo homeruns were the problem. Homers aren't a bad thing. It's just, when men are on base, it's a lot more productive for an offense. Like Nuke_Cleveland mentioned, homers aren't bad. What's bad about them is when the entire team gets homer happy and decide they are going to swing for the fences every single AB, regardless of the situation (see: Juan "Reggie" Uribe). It's like saying goes - money isn't evil. The LOVE of money is what's evil. With a more balanced team, I sure hope the Sox just decide to casually date the HR instead of marry it.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 07:29 AM) If you think the guy is washed up, he did all Sox fans a favor turning down the contract. I don't think he's washed up..I just KNOW that he's a loser and I am beyond thrilled that he's not wearing a Sox uniform anymore. If we would have given that guy the money he wanted, it would have handicapped this organization for the rest of this decade. NO THANKS! Au revoir Magglio..enjoy Comerica.

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 07:25 AM) and if they cost more than a bag of peanuts. Nah, we've ponied up in the past year. We signed Freddy Garcia after trading for him, we signed Buehrle to a multi-year deal (3 years I think it was?), and we locked up Rowand for 3 years (again, I think that was it). Are these mega-names like Carlos Beltran? No, obviously not. I don't see the Sox being big contenders in those ridiculous bidding wars, even if we put together a couple of winning seasons. But, maybe..just maybe..we can build the type of clubhouse and reputation that a top-notch guy might take a little less than the Yankees or Red Sox are offering just to be in a good environment on a team with a promising future. Not all free agents are interested in going to play in NY - they only do it because they want to win. Obviously our Sox have a lot of work to do to make that happen, but they've got to start somewhere, and I think the remodeling that they've done over the past 7 months or so has been extremely encouraging.

QUOTE(Steff @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 07:16 AM) "no talent"... of all the things I have heard that isn't one I recall. Yeah..the guy's got talent. He's just not a guy that's going to carry a team and come up with huge hits. And $15M a year for him? That's a joke, right?

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 07:21 AM) Besides worked out for the Tigers and passed a physical? Are you disputing that Kenny ever said Maggs knee wasn't ok? And where did Maggs get the name of the surgeon? Oh yes, a Doctor who was being paid by the Sox. If his knee is so healthy, why did he not show up for workouts for various teams that were interested in him back in December? Heard that reported on ESPN at the time. Seems to me that if he was in tip-top shape, which he claims to be, he would have shown up eager to show his stuff. But that's just me.

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 07:17 AM) Face it people any FA with upside is not coming here.. Sure, not as long as we're finishing 2nd every season in a disgraceful division.

Haven't read through all these, as I think we've all suggested every possible key in past posts, but there's 1 key, and 1 key only. Staying healthy. We do that, and we have a legitimate chance at playing into late October.

QUOTE(Steff @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 07:06 AM) "I don't think someone would sign me for seven years if my knee wasn't all right," Ordonez said. LMFAO..yes, because a team has neeeeeeeeeeeeeever signed a player to an absurdly stupid contract before, RIGHT MAGGLIO? :rolly

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Feb 7, 2005 -> 06:45 AM) So Furcal with a .279/.344/.414 with 29 SB's and is 4 years younger is overrated but Cabrera who signed a $32 million 4 year deal with .264/.306/.383 and 4 SB's isn't? Explain how that works to me. Think his green is malfunctioning. Either that, or he's just an idiot.

QUOTE(El Caballo @ Feb 3, 2005 -> 09:43 PM) Everytime I see some one other than our sox winning the series I get into this mood where im pissed but happy for the team that won it because one day I wish it will happen with my team. The weird thing about it is that even though we didn't make it to the post and we've been eliminated from winning the series I still get this disappointment once that last out is made and I see the winning team celebrating like theres no tomorrow... Anyone else feel that way? Sure, it's called envy. Every fan goes through it at some point.

QUOTE(Jake @ Feb 6, 2005 -> 10:25 AM) he has to get on base 125 times first Not really. He can just steal 2nd and 3rd a few dozen times, then he'll only have to get on base 75 or 80 times!
-
Um..does this surprise any of you? Anyone who didn't realize that Magglio is a total loser obviously hasn't been paying attention in recent years. The guy is worthless, and I laughed my ass off when I heard what kind of contract those morons in Detroit gave him. Absolutely laughable.

LMFAO. Nuff said.

QUOTE(mreye @ Feb 2, 2005 -> 08:41 AM) Well put. So, now I can get a deal whenever I want to stay at The Mirage? If I wasn't quitting in 2 weeks, perhaps.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 2, 2005 -> 08:41 AM) The A's in the years you mentioned had top 5 #1's in the first 3 slots in the rotation. That was the best rotation in the game. Much better than a 5* rotation. I would agree if you have the best rotation in the game you can win a division with a top 10-15 offense. But you can't win a World Series. Not in the modern game. The Marlins in 2003. They didn't have the best rotation in the game (ranked 7th in the NL in ERA), and their offense was 8th in the NL, and 17th overall. It can be done. It all comes down to who gets hottest and comes together as a team at the right time.

I work for The Mirage in Vegas, and the last time I checked, the Sox are 10-1 to win the AL Central, 20-1 to win the AL Championship, and I think something like 40-1 to win it all. This was as of about a month ago, though, but those odds don't tend to change very much once the major free agents have signed. And yes, like somebody mentioned, the odds are based almost entirely on what teams the bettors are betting on. All Vegas (and all other gambling entities) care about is making money. They couldn't care less who wins - all they're interested in is making the odds such that regardless of who the fans bet on, they make their share. And the last time I checked, new casinos here in town are being built year-round.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 05:50 PM) A 5* rotation can not win you a division. You must have an offense that ranks in the top 5 in run production. Oh? In 2003, the Oakland A's (about as close to a 5 star rotation as there's been in the past few years) won the AL West with an offense that averaged 4.7 runs per game, ranking them 9th in the American League. Their team leader in HR was 29 (Eric Chavez), and their leading RBI man had 106 (Miguel Tejada). The A's also won the division in 2002 with an offense that averaged 4.9 runs per game - also not in the top 5. If you have stud pitchers and a solid defense, which the A's had, you will be there until the end, regardless of your offensive output.

Gee, a player in a contract year working hard in the off-season to be in tip-top shape? Shocker. :rolly

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 16, 2005 -> 06:27 AM) If Bush thinks the war on Iraq solely got himself re-elected in the 2004 Elections, well that's just ludacrist quite frankly. And if you think the voters agreed with him and his cabinet's policies on Iraq, tell that to the families of those American Soldiers killed, and the Iraqi's whose lives still today are in danger from suicide bombings etc. Yep, it's "ludacrist", alright. :rolly

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Jan 17, 2005 -> 08:07 AM) If he says..."we messed up 'blank' part of the war" everybody in the world will jump on it....cause you are all just dying to have something to point at. If he stays steadfast and relentless in the fight..then only the people that nitpick every little f***ing thing he does anyway, will find something to b**** about. I have no problem with what he said. We did have an election...part of that election was the Dems hammering home what a failure the Iraq war is and Bush won anyway. It is not the sole reason, but it is part of it..so why can't he acknwledge it. I know all the elitists want to think Bush only won cause of the religion issues or the gay marriage issues, but I hate to tell you....a lot of EDUCATED people that can careless about either issue voted for Bush. Why can't you just accept there are people with a different opinion than you...and no matter how much you rip the president and no matter how many celebrities get paraded in front of the cameras to degrade this administration and no matter how much hype a movie filled with lies gets....people still have minds of their own. Republicans are not sheep. We are not all flyover morons.

A-ROW: Frank's "busting his hump"
lvjeremylv replied to Al Lopez Ghost (old)'s topic in Pale Hose Talk
If not for injury, Frank would be coming up on 550 HR in 2005 instead of 450. I hope he can have 3-4 more highly productive years, because I'd love to see him top 550 and get up in the 575 range. That would be very awesome - especially if it's all done in a White Sox uniform.
