QUOTE(TLAK @ Jan 15, 2005 -> 03:53 PM) There is certainly truth in what you say. I did think it turned around some last year, the fans treated him much better. Of couse it helped he was hitting. He also had a much more friendly demeanor about him. I think that was just as big of a factor in winning back the fans' support as his production was -- but 42 HR never hurts.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 15, 2005 -> 06:09 PM) It's a movement you make, every time, to begin your swing process. My kid had a problem with getting his swing started from a stop podition, so he ended up pointing his bat at the pitcher till the pitcher started his motion. That way the bat was already moving and it worked well for him until he decided he didn't need it. EDIT: I thought of another example. If you've ever seen the commercial for those Tom Emanski instructional videos, all the kids will cock, or tense up, their knee on the backside of their stance. Right knee for right handed hitter. Or watch Gary Sheffield. He'll whip that bat back and forth until the pitcher gets to a certain point in the windup, then he'll get ready to swing away. It's not a nervous twitch or anything - it's used as a timing mechanism. As a hitter, it's crucial to have the same approach every time up to the plate. If you change constantly, it's virtually impossible to get into any kind of rhythm and comfort zone. Kinda like swinging a golf club. The goal is to find the swing that suits you best, and stick to it. It's all about consistency.

A-ROW: Frank's "busting his hump"

QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jan 15, 2005 -> 12:10 PM) What scares me most is that KW might not offer him a contract at the end of year. Regardless of how he does this coming season I want the Big Hurt to retire in a White Sox Uniform. My biggest nightmare is that he'll go to some other team for the last 2 or 3 years of his career and then join the Hall of Fame with that team and not ours... The HOF decides what team a player goes in with. After all the great numbers Frank has put up in a White Sox uniform, there is a 0% chance that he'll go into the Hall wearing anything but a White Sox cap. -

QUOTE(The Critic @ Jan 15, 2005 -> 08:10 AM) I'm expecting great things from Frank. No pessimism allowed!!! When has Frank ever been healthy and not done great things? Aside from maybe 1998 and 2002 when he didn't have that great of a year (still averaged 29 HR and 100 RBI in those "down years" with about a .370 OBP), he's put up very solid numbers to say the least. Expect Frank to come back looking to prove his doubters wrong yet again. He did it in 2000, and he's fixing to do it again in 2005. Frank -
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jan 15, 2005 -> 09:22 AM) Not sure that his career is on the line. Just like w/ Jimenez, jerks w/ talent find jobs. Edit: I was wrong saying he'd make more than $3 mil, he's making $2.9 next season. Yes, and he earned every penny of that $2.9M, IMO. For those who don't know, last year D'Angelo hit .270 for the Reds with 12 HR, 67 RBI, and had an OBP of .364. That's pretty impressive. He also had just 7 errors at 2B, and he pretty much played every game (146 to be exact). Solid. But, yes, if he had some kind of attitude problem that was detrimental to the team, we're much better off without him.

Yes, if Joe Greedy doesn't have a significant improvement over last season's pathetic performance, he should be given a 1-way ticket the hell out of South Chicago. And I hope he's working on his throwing, too. I can't tell you how many errors Paulie has saved him in recent years by digging horrible throws out of the dirt.

QUOTE(TLAK @ Jan 14, 2005 -> 04:04 PM) Mr. Thomas is the only guy on this team going to the Hall of Fame. You are right about that, but the question was not "who on the White Sox has had the best career". That said, when Frank is healthy, he's the most important player we have. His mere presence in the lineup changes our look completely, and is still fully capable of putting up MVP numbers. Now, aside from a healthy Frank, I'd say you would have to go with Aaron Rowand as our best overall player. That's really just based off a solid 2004 season, but he was good before then, just didn't get the playing time. I don't know how to compare position players to pitchers, but pitching-wise, I'd say MB and FG are a toss-up. Both have very solid career numbers, but MB has done it in a hitters' ballpark, so maybe the edge goes to him. But it's very close.

Who are the SOX going to play in the Series??????
lvjeremylv replied to Southside hitmen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
In 3-4 years you mean? I'd vote for the Padres. I think their team is developing a lot like ours is, and I really like what both clubs are doing. But if you're talking about in 2005, you should get that notion out of your head right now so you can just enjoy the season and not feel disappointed if we "only" get to the playoffs and win a game or two. -
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 09:46 PM) Did you really want to go there? JonudyG 04: June 6.82ERA, 7HR, 5GS, 229BA Aug 6.14ERA, 12HR, 6GS, 297BA Jonudy's Sep wasn't much better. *sigh* Nice #5 we have.

Great..he can kill a harmless animal. That sure will help us win the division! :headshake

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 06:50 PM) Barry Bonds is 0-3 against Kyle Lohse, I hope we don't get him!

Byrnes is EXACTLY the type of player the Sox should be interested in. Is it possible that they're finally learning? I'd absolutely love to have Eric on this team. That being said, I really don't see it happening.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 06:09 PM) If you're going to look at it as 5 for 1 then throw all the $ on the table. Could the CWS have done better than Hernandez+Vizc+Pods+AJ+A mler for Lee+(9M). The total of those contracts = 9M. +1M over the cost of Lee. I believe they could have. OK..who should they have got instead?
-
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 05:59 PM) We're in agreement. I think. I don't think there's anything at all flawed about looking at it as Lee for those 5 players. In fact, that was the reasoning behind my post. As for Cerbaho... settle down champ. We have an accord, buddy. I was simply questioning how *anybody* could argue against it being Lee for those 5 players. It would baffle me to hear their reasoning, heh.
-
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 05:01 PM) Also, you have to decide if you view this trade as Lee for Podsednik, Vizcaino, and Hinton or Lee for Podsednik, Vizcaino, Hinton, Hernandez, Pierzynski, and a possible middle infielder. How can you not look at it as Lee for all 5? If you think about it, the Sox *probably* weren't going to up their payroll much at all, so we used the money saved by trading Lee to fill a couple of holes. Now, we can't include a possible middle infielder in that group, as the money is already spent. But, I don't think there's anything at all flawed about looking at it as Lee for those 5 players.

QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 04:55 PM) I have a stupid question. Why do teams do trades with PTBNL? I mean, when the trade occurs, I believe, the team giving up the PTBNL gives the other team a list from which they can choose that PTBNL. WHy doesn't the team receiving the PTBNL just name the person they want from their list? What is the purpose of this PTBNL in any trade? Is it because the team receiving the PTBNL cannot make up their mind when the trade goes down? I used to think it was done that way so both teams could see how the trade was working out, and a little down the road, that would help determine how good the PTBNL would be. But, obviously that is not the case. So, I really have no idea. It doesn't make much sense, IMO.

Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuup. That's what I've been trying to tell me Dodger fan friend for months now. He always says "but he hits .300 every year with 30/100+", and I have to explain to him yet again that a lot of his production comes from *meaningless* at bats (either up or down big late in games). I would have liked to have kept Magglio if the price were right, but that con artist Boras is probably going to be asking for $13-$15M a season for Magglio, and some sappy owner will probably give it to him. Very very risky for *not* that great of a player.

I slightly disagree. In 2003, for instance, I don't know about the top duo on each of the AL Central teams, but the Sox 1/2 combo at the end of the year was Loaiza and Buehrle, and they combined for a 35-23 record with a 3.53 ERA. That's not Cy Youngesque, but I don't think any duo in the Central that season bettered that. It's certainly as good as any other team. And obviously their offense has been at the top of the division probably each of the last 3-4 seasons. So what's been the problem? It seems to me that the Sox always end up choking at *just* the right time in *just* the right spot. When they need a big pitch, they don't get it. When they need a big hit, they don't get it. When they need a big defensive play, they don't get it. When they need the ball to bounce one way, it bounces the other. SOMETHING always seems to end up going wrong for the White Sox. It all comes down to attitude and actually believing that you can win. If things pan out well for the Sox and their new players can bring a positive outlook to the clubhouse, I can see good things happening in the coming years.
-
Not probably - we DON'T get either one. So we didn't trade Carlos Lee for Scott Podsednik, Luis Vizcaino, and Travis Hinton. We also effectively acquired AJ Pierzynski and Orlando Hernandez. So basically, we got our leadoff man (unless he proves he's not fit for the job), a #3 starter (which obviously at the same time solidified our #5 spot), a good arm for our bullpen (can you ever have enough lively arms in the pen?), and a catcher who can actually handle himself at the plate for Carlos Lee. Advantage Sox IMSO.
-
QUOTE(Chisoxmatt @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 01:54 PM) If we even get to the playoffs we will actually have some real pitching unlike in 2000... Eh, it really wasn't our pitching that let us down in the 2000 playoffs. Our offense decided to take 3 games off, and WE GONE.

QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 06:50 AM) WoW... thats a pretty annoying little article. "they signed A.J. Pierzynski... but hes no Pudge Rodriquez" ouch... what place did they finish in with pudge last year? The Sox also aren't paying AJ $10M a season like the Tigers are paying I-Rod. I'll take AJ for $2.25M with an extra $7.75M to spend elsewhere ANYDAY over I-Rod. Anybody who wouldn't is a moron IMO. -
QUOTE(awesomefan @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 01:01 AM) I'm dying for some Major League baseball & I'm sure I'm not alone. Just read an 11 page thread mostly about Ray Durham & infielders. Got me to thinkin' 'bout one thang the SOX need on a permanent bases is a bunch of players that can lay down a good bunt. A few others mentioned the same thang in that thread. I got a real good feeling about the Sox chances this year. It's gonna be real interesting to see how all these new players are gonna do. I would get out some of my old VHS tapes of baseball, but my VCR broke. That's what I usually do about this time of year. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM IDEA!!!! Gonna call some friends or relatives that have a working VCR & get my baseball fix. Gonna start savin' for one of those machines that can convert VHS to DVD.. Only got a plain DVD player now. Better luck next winter for me. TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME....TAKE ME OUT TO THE CROWD....BUY ME SOME PEANUTS & CRACKER JACK....I DON'T CARE IF I EVER GET BACK. I LOOOOVE COTTON CANDY!!!! You forgot to say "Once Upon a Time...".
