  1. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 02:23 PM) KW's got one thing on his mind, win it again. NOW. Go kenny go... KW's got one thing on his mind, win it again. NOW. Go kenny go... If those Soriano rumors are accurate then it's clear Kenny has a severe case of amnesia. All last year the talk was about Small Ball, Pitching and Defense. Hence, championship. Now suddenly we want to trade McCarthy while Buerhle, Freddy and Vazquez are struggling? And to bring in a bat who is a free agent at the end of the year? Soriano is a superstar talent but if we learned anything from last year, it's that pitching wins. Even the Astros were testament to that after losing Beltran and going to the WS.
  2. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 05:43 PM) I consider any player traded for Alomar with the potential to become a major league player as overpaying. Whether that's scrub reliever or 4th OF. I absolutely agree with this. Alomar is 40 years old for goodness sake. It's ridiculous to give up anything to get someone who is 40 and will play once a week for half a season. Widger is bad but come on, he is not even close to the reason this team has struggled recently.
  3. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 03:52 PM) This is just stupid. If they gave up anything to get him, then I agree 100%. If he was signed off the scrap heap then it's worth a shot for a guy who will play once a week.
  4. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 06:08 AM) There is a link to the Javy rumors already in trade winds but I'll keep this in here Sorry about that. I should've looked there first... although the gist of my post is that the Sox are the top two sports stories in the NY media. I like Gordon also but I can't see dealing an above-average starter in his prime for a reliever who is almost 40.
  5. Top story is Mets talking to Sox about Vazquez or Garcia (please let it be Javy) and second story is about the Yanks' letting Contreras get away: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/index.html Incidentally, this is not a second guess, but I was concerned during the offseason about the relievers we let go (Marte, Vizcaino) and now I'm not surprised that we're looking to trade a starter because we need relievers. Personally I'd hate to see Garcia go. And although I'd say Javy has been a mild disappointment, there is no way in HELL I'd trade him for Tom Gordon (Philly is another possible trade partner mentioned in the article).
  6. QUOTE(shoota @ Jun 17, 2006 -> 10:52 AM) I'm not a fan of AL and NL teams adopting the other league's rules when they are the visitor. I propose that no matter which team is the home team during interleague play, the AL should keep its DH rule and the NL should keep its pitchers bat rule. This rule change should apply in all regular season interleague games as well as all All-Star and World Series games. I think that is extreme but I think you have a point. Under your scenario it would be very unfair to the NL, however under the current scenario it is pretty unfair to the AL. Think about it, when the NL has to use a DH, is that really a penalty? Granted, they don't plan in the offseason for a full-time guy at that spot, a la Thome, Papi or Big Hurt, but they definetely have a professional hitter to plug into the position. On the other hand, the AL pitchers NEVER get to bat, so when they are in NL parks it is much less fair to them, IMO, than it is for NL teams in AL parks. Here's the bottom line: MLB needs to friggin standardize one way or the other. I happen to be pro DH, but if they decide pitchers hit all around, so be it. Do it one way or the other. Or, go back to no interleague play. It's ridiculous already to have two rules for 30-plus years.
  7. I am going to be in town the weekend when Cleveland is at the Cell. Figured I'd be able to go Friday night or Saturday and get tix at the game. Are you guys saying I should forget that idea? :-)
  8. MLB says it's Fox's fault... "they won't allow us to show these games". Apparently all weekend day games for the rest of the season will be blacked out. What a bunch of crap. And while I'm on hold (for 45 minutes!) I see the AJ-Barrett highlight come on the screen. Of all games to miss... F**king MLB..
  9. I got the same thing... it says it's blacked out because it's a "national broadcast"... but clearly it is not national if I can't see it. It's only regional and this is bull sh*t. I'm on hold with mlb.com customer service. A-holes...
  10. Nice article. And at the time I'm writing this reply, it's on the front page of nytimes.com. Not bad, Coop...
  11. QUOTE(LeroySettle @ Apr 23, 2006 -> 06:41 PM) Whether you like it or not there is gonna be new traditions, like throwing opposing team homers back and the wave. The wave is without question the worst "tradition" in the history of sports. It gets the whole crowd paying more attention to when they're supposed to stand versus watching the freakin game. God I hate the wave.
  12. I'm not saying anything controversial here, but if there's one guy they absolutely must lock up, it's Buerhle. As good as the rest of the staff is, he's the one guy who pitches a solid game EVERY time out and is as solid a guy as you can want. We all realize we are not the Yankees and can't keep everyone. But Buerhle is someone you don't take a chance on. If it means someone else walks, so be it. Sign Buehrle now. Tomorrow. Yesterday. Just do it already.
  13. It's a long interview (over 40 mins) and most of it is about the Red Sox-Yankee rivalry from the 70s, but there's some White Sox stuff in there and it's a very good interview. If you're a Fisk fan it's worth listening to... http://wfan.com/chrismikeaudio/local_audio..._108174531.html
  14. This isn't a second-guess. About 4 batters ago I was wondering why no one was up in the pen. It was clear that Vazquez was struggling. And he's still out there getting hit. I don't get it. I have a ton of confidence in Javy, but on this night he didn't have his stuff. He should've been out of there at 5-4 IMO.
  15. Whenever Hawk does the scoreboard and the Florida Marlins are playing at home, he says they are playing the game in Fort Lauderdale. Well, as someone who has lived in Fort Lauderdale for 5 years I can tell you beyond a shadow of doubt that the Marlins absolutely do not play here. They don't even play in the same county as Fort Lauderdale. If anything, they are in Miami. Yes, I know... minor point and somewhat off-topic. My apologies, it just bothers me. I'll shut up now. :-) PS - What is Hawk and DJ's e-mail address? Maybe I'll educate him directly.
  16. He is definitely not the same. Last year he was very Buehrle-like, working fast and throwing strikes. This year he doesn't seem to have any rhythm. He's getting behind and it's killing him. Hopefully it's just some minor hitch that Cooper can spot and easily fix.
  17. You should be ok if it's just two people. I tried last year with 3 and inevitably someone would get locked out. Also, if you use more than one computer, make sure you sign out completely on one before using the other. Tell your friend to do the same. They will recognize you as logged in even if you're not watching, and if there are 3 logins, you could get locked out.
  18. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 04:12 PM) Remember what happened when they waited with Konerko? They ended up paying a lot more money than they wanted to. Say they waited until the end of '06, and Jose has another '05 like season, do you realize how much money he would command? Look at what some of these other guys are making. And I disagree with the notion that Jose has had one good half in his 3 seasons. He was very good in '03. Inconsistent in '04. Stellar in '05. And not just in the second half. If you go check out his '05 game log, he really only had 3 or 4 rough starts leading up to the all-star break that jacked his era up over 4. He was very good through April, May and the first week or so of June. Considering what some of these other guys are making, some who are nowhere near the caliber or even as accomplished as Jose, I'd say we got him for a very reasonable price. I totally agree with your point on Konerko. That is also my point with Buerhle. Don't wait to get something done. Reinsdorf has opened up the wallet this year, which is great, but his wallet is still not on the level of the Yankees or Red Sox. It's not a bottomless pit and we have to pick our battles. I'm just saying Buerhle has proven over the long term that he is worth a big contract. Contreras hasn't. And if he does go out and have a great '06 (which I hope he does) and we can't keep him, then it's not a big deal. He'll be going on 37 or 38 and we still have Vasquez, Garcia, Buerhle, Garland - and hopefully McCarthy lives up to what he's shown so far.
  19. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 03:19 PM) you can monitor chicago-area weather here Well, according to that it should stop raining at around 3am. Ouch.
  20. I have a couple of issues with this deal: 1. God bless Contreras for what he did for us down the stretch, and in the playoffs, last year, but remember that the guy has had one good HALF season in the majors. He was absolutely awful with the Yankees, and barely mediocre from mid '04 to mid '05 with the Sox. 2. Contreras is listed at 34 years old but we all know El Duque had himself 4 years younger than he really was. If that's the common practice with the Cubans, then Contreras is 38. We just locked him up till age 42. Yikes. 3. Buerhle is only 27 and has had 5 good seaons with the Sox (as opposed to one half). He is the true ace (and face) of this team. I realize we have him locked up for 2 years, but he'll still be only 29 at that point. Why not lock him up long term now, instead of committing all that money to Contreras? This is assuming, of course, that Kenny hasn't been trying to do this all along. I hope he has. I'm not trying to be negative, just looking at the devil's advocate side of things. Contreras was the man for us last year, but to me he hasn't proved enough to warrant this extension. Just my two cents.
  21. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:40 AM) I'll bet this is somehow a fantasy baseball related post Ha... no, it really wasn't. I don't play fantasy baseball. I was honestly just curious. Personally I agree with everyone who says there is no need to risk him out there. But at the same time I don't think we have to bring Gload north. We're talking one day a week to give Paulie some rest. Ozuna could do that job, as could Mack or Dye.
  22. Does anyone know if Ozzie plans to give Thome any time at 1B this spring once he's 100% healthy? Is the plan to have him be a DH exclusively all year? If Gload doesn't make the team, we can always go with Ozuna, Dye or Makowiak (or maybe a combo of the three) to back up Konerko. I'm just curious if anything has been discussed about this.
  23. QUOTE(quickman @ Dec 21, 2005 -> 09:10 PM) No we will get another lefty via trade. That's just it. No one is trading a good lefty unless they get a lot in return.
  24. I was on record saying I was against trading Marte - nothing against Makiowack (butchered spelling, I know), who is a very good player - I just hate giving up a young, hard-throwing lefty just because he had one sub-par year (ok, maybe one and a half). I think we have a good one in Cotts, but I'd feel much better if we had another lefty in there to replace Marte. The pickings are slim in free agency so I'm wondering if we have anyone at AA or AAA who might be a good candidate. I don't follow the minor leagues that closely so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me whether we have someone already in-house who could potentially fill the role.
  25. The article makes me feel a lot better about the deal, especially since I didn't know a whole lot about Mackowiak. However I still feel a little uneasy about giving up a lefty with such a live arm after 1 1/2 bad years. I'm sure I'll feel a lot better once we get another lefty in here to help Cotts (which we better do. :-)
