  1. QUOTE(chunk23 @ May 8, 2005 -> 01:43 AM) How does a delayed steal work? When the pitcher makes his move toward home, the baserunner does two (or three) slidesteps like he would normally do after the ball is thrown. He then turns and takes off. The play is designed to catch the defense off guard. Typically, when a runner takes off, the firstbaseman will yell "runner!" to let the infielders know he is stealing. In the case of a delayed steal, by the time the runner takes off, the infielders attention has turned to the pitch, hence the opportunity to catch them by surprise. After each pitch, with a runner on base, you should see both middle infielders take a few steps toward the middle so they can react if the catcher overthrows the pitcher. If a team sees the middle infielders getting a little lazy, they will sometimes try the delayed steal. They also may try it if they see the SS (or whichever infielder they believe will be covering) drifting toward the hole on the pitch. For the most part it has been abandoned in the professional ranks because it is difficult to catch players of that calibur by surprise. When it works it is a thing of beauty, however.
  2. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ May 8, 2005 -> 12:35 AM) I'm sure its been mentioned before, but I found a glitch in the game. I hit 2 inside the park HR's with Juan Pierre in Houston without any errors on the plays and it gave him 2 doubles at the end of the game. Hit the ball out of the park next time and you don't have to worry about it.
  3. Anyone know when rosters will be available for purchase, including all updates and all of the Minor League rosters???? For PS2..........
  4. QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ May 7, 2005 -> 09:42 PM) Hawk and DJ were talking about delayed steals last week. They said it had been a long time since they saw one. Uribe handles the throw, it's a delayed out. Me thinks. You're right. But that is what a delayed steal is designed to do. You are stealing on the middle infielders, not the catcher. The catcher has plenty of time to get the ball there, it is the middle infielders that break late, not knowing the runner broke, since he doesn't break immediately on the pitcher's first move toward the plate. It is difficult to make the catch and tag on the run, which is what happens if it is executed properly.
  5. QUOTE(JimH @ May 7, 2005 -> 08:59 PM) I would check on bluejaystalk.com , maybe they are talking about all the great White Sox plays over there. Sorry, I thought there might be some people on here who have an appreciation of the nuances of the game regardless of which team is involved..... SMARTASS!!!!!
  6. Orlando Hudson's steal of 2B was a thing of beauty today. I can't remember the last time I saw a legit delayed steal in the Big Leagues. Anyone remember the Sox pulling one in recent years??
  7. QUOTE(Brian @ May 7, 2005 -> 12:33 PM) I play with fantasy drafts all the time. It's fun to pick teams and play with em. I did a draft with all the locked players. Kicks ass, except when you have to try and hit of Spahn or Gibson. Try hitting against Satchel Paige........ freakin impossible.
  8. I'm haven't bet horses in a long time, so I won't even attempt to try and guess the top three. But look for either High Fly or Sun King to AT LEAST show. The Kentucky Derby is an awesome event. I would love to go back to it now that I am older and my focus is not squarely placed on the party. I don't want to exclude the party, just find a little balance...... When I went in 1991, it was a blast. The Derby is different in that some people are there in shorts and tee shirts looking to party and have a great time in the infield, while others are there in suits or a nice Sunday dress with a fancy wide brimmed hat. They all enter in the same gates, side by side. There was somewhat of a challenge to sneak alcohol in. There were police stationed at every gate to check people, coolers, etc. If they caught you, they laughed and tossed the alcohol into a huge dumpster just inside the gate. There was so much liquor in that dumpster it wasn't even funny. We tried a few different methods with varying results. We cut a core out of a watermelon and then poured a bottle of vodka into it so it would soak in. We replaced the core, reattached it with pins and used clear fingernail polish to glaze over the lines. That worked and we had a nice spiked watermelon. We also tried to sneak Jim Beam in, by poking a hole into Barq's Root Beer cans (near the bottom), dumping out the root beer, washing out the can and then funneling Beam into the cans filling them up. We then closed the hole with silver trailer tape hoping it would hold. It did, but there was one problem. When the police officer opened up the cooler (regular drinks were layered on top, including legit Barq's) he started fishing down in the ice. He pulled out one of the bogus Barq's and all would have been fine except for the pressure inside the can was different and the can seemed softer when he picked it up. He then found the tape and laughed his ass off as he brought over another office to go through the entire cooler. We lost 6 cans of Jim Beam in the process. lol
  9. QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 4, 2005 -> 02:34 AM) The best INFIELD in sports, no doubt. Went to the 1991 Derby with Strike the Gold taking the title...... I never saw a live the whole day. None. Watched the whole thing on tv screens in the infield. That was one hell of a party, I might add. LOL

Yup, I looked it up. Here is the save rule for those who have not already put it to memory.....
  11. Rex Hudler replied to a post in a topic in FutureSox Board
I believe a save is awarded if the potential tying run is at the plate or on deck......
  12. QUOTE(JimH @ May 6, 2005 -> 12:59 AM) If it's done, you guys should make sure to copy his direct supervisor as well as Reinsdorf. While you're writing him, ask if he can somehow coordinate getting an interview with Dave Wilder for SoxTalk. And free tickets for SoxTalk members on a selected night. Let him know we will more than make up for the lost ticket revenue in added beer sales!
  13. QUOTE(JimH @ May 6, 2005 -> 08:28 PM) Can he hit my Weiss beer compadre? I know he's had a few pinch hits but his stats aren't overwhelming at the minor league level. Just curious. The only time I've seen him play was at the major league level, with the Cubs. And then, only sporadically. I wonder why they signed him. Maybe they feel they need a veteran presence, or is this a precursor to another move (unrelated to injury)? If you have noticed, Charlotte has been a revolving door of players the past few years. The Sox make more in season acquisitions there than all of their other minor league teams combined. At least it seems that way.......
  14. QUOTE(bogie @ May 6, 2005 -> 07:00 PM) Spidale is back on the DL with a bum hand. That splains it........ thanks. Hope he gets back quickly.
  15. That is exactly what I was looking for him to do last year in Birmingham. I saw three starts and didn't see him doubling up much, and not at all on his changeup. He was very predictable in those three starts I saw. Doesn't sound like he was last night. That's good news.

QUOTE(AssHatSoxFan @ May 5, 2005 -> 02:28 PM) 1.99 here in louisville is the cheapest I have seen but I bet it might be a few cents cheaper elsewhere Kentucky has historically had some of the lowest state taxes on gasoline in the country. I am not sure if that is still the case, but in the past there was always at least a 5 or 6 cents difference when crossing the river from Indiana to Kentucky.
  17. Do you know what move they made to make room for him? Geez, I can't keep up with minor league transactions.......
  18. The silver lining with Bull's injury is that it was not his back. Back injuries can be debilitating long term. Let's hope this triceps injury is not too bad and doesn't become a long term thing.
  19. QUOTE(MurcieOne @ May 5, 2005 -> 07:03 AM) from what i've heard from my sources.... Corwin has finally gotten his head on straight in regards to his conditioning and his in between start work. again i heard.... that when he was lighten it up a few years back, he took his conditioning for granted.... it looks like he has learned his lesson. Power lefties are hard to come by. You beat me to it...... I have been hearing similar things. I think he has really matured over the past couple of years. Adversity can do that sometimes. I hope he makes it all the way back.
  20. Rosie is a solid minor leaguer..... might even be comparable to the Ross Gload pickup a couple of years ago. My guess is he goes to AAA and either Bikowski or more likely Spidale gets sent down. That may depend on if he has been playing this year in Japan or sitting for the first month of the season. If he has been sitting, he may start in AA.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 5, 2005 -> 12:00 AM) It's really not necesary. The car companies are getting killed right now because SUV sales have plummetted. Ford and GM are taking a bath on those gas guzzlers, the bigger they are, the biggest the sales drops. Plus the companies who invested in hybrids can't build enough of them. Production is shifting as we speak. As usual, the free market is taking care of business. If that is true then all I can say is IT'S ABOUT TIME!! We wonder why gas prices continue to rise...... we demand more refineries.... we want to tell Middle Eastern companies how much they can charge us...... All, while we keep buying bigger and bigger and less fuel efficient automobiles? In my economics classes, I seemed to have learned that when you have a limited supply, increasing demand is not a good way to keep pricing down. One can argue that supply is not limited, but in reality it is because we do not control the supply, or at least not enough of it to meet our own demand. Sure there are other factors involved in short term spikes in prices but until we stop increasing demand, there will be no reason to expect gas prices to go down. Hell, we'll be lucky if they stay flat. A couple of other tidbits about gas/pricing..... -- unless something has changed, the government does not benefit from higher gas prices. The tax on gasoline is not based on a % of the sales price it is a set amount per barrel of oil, per gallon of gas. -- Gas stations themselves rarely make much money in times like these. When you see the prices rise at the pump, you can almost guarantee that their cost is rising. I can't speak for every market in the country, but I do know that the margin on a gallon of gasoline is small. Most often stations sell at approx. 8 to 10 cents per gallon above cost. Many times it is less and at times they are even selling at below costs due to competitive factors. -- For those that fill up often, or businesses that rely run service trucks, I can see being very attentive to pricing. But for the average driver, is it really worth driving an extra mile or two to save a nickel a gallon? That's only a 75-cent savings on a 15 gallon tank. $1.50 on a 30 gallong tank (have no idea what size tanks some trucks have). I fill up about every 10-14 days. My time is worth more than a couple bucks a month. But that's just me.
  22. QUOTE(SuperSteve @ May 4, 2005 -> 09:04 PM) Haha, what the hell is a gigantor? Big Bat??
  23. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 2, 2005 -> 03:48 AM) Very true Rex. I also think they need to ban way more substances. Agreed, that falls right in line with the others... The plan needs to be comprehensive and have stiff penalties.
  24. QUOTE(IndySoxFan @ May 2, 2005 -> 03:49 AM) I have stated in the past that J. Garland is a "cocksucker for life"..... I hope he keeps feeding me crow..... Would that, in turn, make you the cocksucker?
  25. I probably fall just under the lovers group....... I have always advocated patience regarding Jon, yet I have questioned his demeanor and been frustrated with his slow development at times. Before the season started I predicted he would be the Sox 3rd best starter this year. I never figured him for this kind of start, however.
