MVP Baseball 2005
QUOTE(SuperSteve @ Apr 11, 2005 -> 02:31 AM) Does anybody else walk a ton? I have trouble hitting the best pitchers, so I will have like 2 hit, yet have 7 runs. I have walked over 20 times in a game before. It gets kind of annoying. s*** no........ I come out swinging.... I'm lucky to see four balls the entire game!

Razor Shines on his players at AA
QUOTE(minorsfan @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 12:33 AM) Are you saying this a good thing or bad thing?????? C just stating a fact...... not passing any judgement at all..... It was a different style than what I was used to seeing, but it worked, so who am I to judge?

4/9 Games
QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Apr 10, 2005 -> 08:55 PM) I musta been drunk last night then, because I looked up all three boxes......... I think it was the booze........ I went back and looked and the innings pitched I reported was actually the number of hits each one allowed. So either the boxscores were initially messed up or I was.

Razor Shines on his players at AA
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 9, 2005 -> 09:38 PM) Lol Gene. On a sidenote, Razor is quite the guy. Definately keeps his players loose. Not so Jason. Razor was as hard lined as I have seen in a Minor League manager last year. The players knew what to expect and if they strayed he let them know it. When he said jump, they said how high. His players played hard on him, but he was for more strict in terms of rules/discipline than most other minor league managers. At times last year, he seemed to have them wound pretty tight. especially early in the year.

4/9 Games
Liotta went 3 innings, Haigwood 6 and Pacheco 4. Haigwood and Winston lost to Jeremy Sowers tonight. Sowers is a great lefty who will climb the minor league ladder and the prospect charts quickly. He was a first round draft pick out of HS and again last year after three years at Vanderbilt. He may be the first player from last year's draft to make it to the Big Leagues. In the FWIW department, Chad Billingsly who beat the Barons on opening night is also a top prospect. Drafted in 2003 out of HS, he made it to AA in his first full season. He is back at AA to begin this year, still only 20 years old. He's the Dodgers #2 prospect and BA's #19 overall. No shame in losing to either of those pitchers.

Rosters
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Apr 7, 2005 -> 03:18 PM) IIRC I thought he was headed to B-Ham, but with Young and Sweeney up there, he may have to possibly DH. Brice is not on Bham's roster.

Question about...
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 7, 2005 -> 02:24 AM) Head is supposed to be quite the player, I know a lot of services have him going quite high in the 1st round. At this time of the year I can't comment on many of the SEC guys other than stuff I've read or heard. Looking forward to watching the games as more get televised, both on ESPN and on the Fox Sports college stations. I noticed Head two years ago and was impressed then. He hits LH has pop and hits for a high average with a smooth swing. He'll do well.

UNC vs. Illinois
I have no problem if they move the line back some, but I don't think it should go as far as the NBA distance. I just don't think it NEEDS to be done. Wouldn't hurt, but I don't see it as a major issue. I love the game as it is.

Question about...
I can comment on Mullins a bit. I don't remember a lot of detail about him, but I do remember liking him last year when Vandy came to the SEC Tournament. At the time I was more focused on watching Jeremy Sowers (Cleveland 1st rd pick last year) but Mullins was good. I think he was a tall lefty. Can't comment on the pitcher from Tennessee because UT usually sux and often does not make the SEC Tourney, or when they do they bow out early. Another SEC player to watch is Stephen Head from Ole Miss. He pitches, but I believe he is more likely to be drafted as a hitter. He should be a definite 1st round pick. Also, you will be getting your wish. Because of the absence of hockey, ESPN has picked up several college games and will show games beginning this weekend. The SEC chose not to participate because they wanted rights fees. Only one or two SEC teams will be involved and will be shown when on the road, since they don't own rights to road games. Check out the LSU-Tulane game on April 19. That is a huge event in New Orleans and I believe has been held in the Superdome before, drawing close to 30,000 fans. Both are currently ranked in the Top 10. ESPN College Baseball Schedule

UNC vs. Illinois
QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 01:41 AM) A quick NBA/college comparison concerning 3 pointers. There are 20 college teams that make more than 8.5 threes per game, with 8 of them averaging 9 or more (including Louisville, Duke, and Illinois). Only Phoenix makes more than that number in the pros, and only 2 teams hit more than 8, even with the extra 8 minutes per game. Also, 12 college teams shot better than 40% from the arc during the regular season. Not a single pro team did this, and only Phoenix was even close. This shows how much more of a factor 3 point shooting is in college basketball. It is clearly much easier to make a three in college and is a much bigger part of the game. It also makes up a much larger percentage of the team's scoring, considering that only Charlotte averages fewer points per game than national leader UNC. I'm not against the 3 pointer, but let's make people work to get those 3's. Keeping the line that close puts too great an emphasis on outside shooting to the detriment of other facets of the game. I love college basketball, but I'd rather see teams running plays to get good shots close to the basket than everything revolving around the 3 pointer. Some of these games have turned into giant 3 point shootouts, like the WV-Louisville game. The open 3 is the easiest shot to get because of all of the ground the D needs to cover, and the reward for making is simply too great right now. Moving the line back should drop this emphasis and also allow more room inside the arc to run plays and get better shots, and weaker shooters would have to limit their shots or draw the coaches ire. I really think it would make for a much better game to watch. The lane is wider in the NBA, is it not?? FWIW, I don't want the college game being anything like the NBA, so that would not be incentive for me to change the distance.

UNC vs. Illinois
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 05:25 PM) That's pretty much how I feel about it. Your typical big guy should not be able to step out and hit 3's. 19'9" is too close. I would rather see them go to the international line of 21'6". Why not? 6'9 or 6'10 guys are now often able to dribble the ball and bring it up court. 6'7 guys are playing shooting guard. The game has changed. Whether the line is the right distance or not, should not have anything to do with a player of a certain size being able to shoot it.

UNC vs. Illinois
QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 04:29 AM) He wasn't ready to play this year, but he does have nice size and athleticism as well as a nice touch around the hoop. I think by his junior year he could be an all big 10 performer. So would one not be able to say they have a pretty nice player "coming in" next year that doesn't show up on the recruiting lists??

The thank you Illini
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 04:06 AM) Like MJ and the Bulls said after their 72-10 reg season in 96. It don't mean a thing without the ring. The same applies here. Even though I'm a huge Illini fan, you don't get a 37 wins banner or rings or trophy. The one game that mattered, they didn't win, so I can't give them propz. It's killing me too. Perhaps no 37 wins banner, but they do get a Final Four banner. You'll learn to look back on this season with fondness soon enough.

Did Shaun Pruitt become a terrible player overnight? Have the Illini given up on him?

I just noticed something that I didn't catch the whole game........ If Illinois was the #1 overall seed, why weren't they wearing white jerseys tonight????

Observations
QUOTE(JimH @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 02:15 AM) I was at the game, in great seats. Westbrook was a stud today, every bit as good as Buehrle. Iguchi and Podesdnik both looked overmatched today but I was not shocked, Westbrook was that good. Buehrle and Shingo were better ... it ended up as a win, and IMO credit is due to Pierzynski, he called a magnificent game. Sox did just enough executing on offense to get it done. Very frankly with the way those two starting pitchers were dealing, I'm surprised anyone scored. It was a pitchers duel, plain and simple. One win in the column, let's focus on Wednesday. Westbrook was very good...... I was surprised to find that he actually threw more strikes than Buehrle. Their pitch count was almost the same as well. Both guys were excellent.

Wilson Valdez
QUOTE(Jabroni @ Apr 2, 2005 -> 01:20 AM) The Mets claimed him and then waived him to try to sneak him through to their minor league team to have some infielder depth down there, just like we tried to do. They were hoping no other team would claim him but the Mariners did. The Mariners will probably try to do the exact same thing and another team could claim Valdez again. The weird thing is that the Mariners would have had to pass on him the first time around because all teams in the same league have first crack in the waiver process.

QUOTE(whitesoxin' @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 03:41 AM) How would you feel if the Sox lost the WS? After winning 110 games and losing in the WS? Just putting things in perspective. Perspective is how most of the people on this board are handling things, not being a complete ass. People have choices. Most chose the route of having some class, don't you think?

UNC vs. Illinois
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2004 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 03:36 AM) Dude, stop. Unc made all the big plays in the end. Give them their due. I'm still kinda pissed off on all the silly fouls on Augistine. But getting all crazy will do absolutely nothing. In all honesty, they may have done Illinois a favor. Based on how Augustine played while he was in the game and the way Ingram stepped up, Illinois might have been better off.

UNC vs. Illinois
The things that kept jumping out at me towards the end of the game were Dee Brown not looking for a shot and the Illinois guards not penetrating. I know the three was their forte, but it seemed like they had opportunities to finish plays and get layups. Head did once and could have again on the play where his pass was stolen. It was like UNC didn't expect them to drive all the way and were trying to play the kick out. I think that really hurt them on that one play. But the bottom line is that it was a great game. Illinois made a huge run and wouldn't go away. They showed how much heart that team had. I'm sure you Illinois fans will look back on this season fondly, once the disappointment wears off. This was a really fun team to watch and they had one hell of a year. Be proud of this team, not pissed at it. Palehose, congrats. Everytime Illinois made a run, UNC had an answer. Whether it was May, a tip in, a Jawad Williams 3 or Felton making a big play, there was always a big play.
