  1. I really don't have much of anything on Ivy. My understanding is he has excellent speed. He has hovered and struggled in rookie ball for 3 years now (actually his first year was very good). 2. MSF, I am not doubting that he noticed him. We discussed Reed at length on WC last year. Perhaps my post was a bit harsh, but I was just arguing the logic behind his comments. To me, it smacked of someone who was spouting off info without really knowing what he was talking about, so I challenged him. If I misunderstood, then the discussion is complete. I have ackowledged the very possibility of that. Plus, I have a hard time counting 11 HBP's as a good thing. It is either bad luck or something bad waiting to happen. And yes, they did boost his OBP quite a bit. The last few things I have read say that he is a RF (with an average arm) or a LF. He hasn't been playing much CF for the Barons so perhaps they are right, which really hurts his chances and even decreases his potential in my mind. Since the Barons are on the road trip from hell, I haven't yet had the opportunity to see him live.
  3. LOL Patience doesn't always pay off, but it sometimes does. I too have doubts about Joe, but I am not about to write him off. Many good/great players have had bumps in the Road to the Show, yet all ended up well.
  4. No need to argue about all of this. We have the same opinion of Reed. I don't agree with your assessments, but if you write something to mean one thing, and I interpret it another, then we will never agree. I just thought it weird that you referred to liking Reed last year and then mentioned the importance of walks and OBP in the same breath, citing his 3:1 BB:K ratio (this year's numbers in the same paragraph as referring to your judgement on him last year). Last year it was 1:2.4 so based on how you worded your point, it seemed quite flawed to me. If that is not what you meant, then I guess I just read into incorrectly.

  7. I know that we are both on the same side here, but I have to blow a few holes in your comments.... First of all, you must be REALLY good if you noticed Jeremy Reed last year and told everyone to watch out for him. If you, like Billy Beane like to use OBP as one of the most important offensive stats and that is one of the first stats you look at, then why in the hell did you like Reed? He only walked 11 times last year in 210 AB's, about half of Billy Beane's MINIMUM standard. Secondly, you can bash the Top Prospect lists and Baseball America and like publications all you want. You say "Most of the guys that have put together the top 100 prospects list probably only see certain prospects once or twice if at all" and "Most of the people that put together these lists together do so based solely on scouting reports". Can you think of a better way to rate prospects?? Do you know ANYONE that sees more players, more often?? Sure some guys aren't recognized as quickly and much of the rankings are hype, but until you can give me a better way, then I will state that they are the MOST RELIABLE sources available. Again, we are on the same side and agree that Reed has vaulted himself into a higher status, but my point was and still is valid that he is not widely recognized as such yet. He is certainly on his way, however.
  8. Wow, I guess I missed your point.

  11. Brando, hate to break it to you, but Jeremy Reed is still not yet a household name. He was not included in the Baseball America Top 100 Prospects this year. In the current issue they revisit that Top 100 list and even provide a "Moving Onto the Charts" category for guys who are having great seasons that were not on the list. Jeremy Reed was surprisingly absent from that group as well. He was not in the Sox Top 10 Prospects before the year started either, and was not selected for the Future's Game. Sox fans should know about him right now, but the rest of the baseball world is still lagging in the Jeremy Reed PR department.

  15. I do agree that Rios time here is limited and will not last beyond this season if that long. But who does Gload take playing time from?? When Wunsch comes off the DL, the Sox will likely move a position player. So does Rowand go? Harris? Rios? So even if Rios goes, then until they move back to 11 pitchers. My point is that just because Gload is hitting .330 it doesn't mean he can play a part-time role. And I don't see them using him full-time right now. I understand that he is doing well and that he may "deserve a cup of coffee" but that doesn't mean he'll get it. Lots of guys hit and hit well in AAA. Luis Raven, Mario Valdez are a couple that come to mind. Gload may end up getting a shot with the Sox and he may not, but don't expect him to contribute to the Sox for long term. He is more than likely a AAAA player that will bounce in and out of the Majors for the next few years, then never to be heard from again.
  16. You should actually read what was posted.... Before giving up the home run to Jones on Wednesday on a belt-high fastball, Koch had posted a 1.89 ERA over his previous 20 appearances. So it's not like he has been woefully ineffective.

  19. Rex Hudler replied to a post in a topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think Miles could help this team, but he has to be part of it, not the sole solution. I am not convinced that Miles shelf life in the Big Leagues will be long. I think he is a 1-2 year guy, max 3 years. I see him in a similar light as Frank Menechino, although Frankie walks more. MIles will have to do it with his bat and his attitude. I do think that Miles is a late bloomer and still has room to improve, however.
  20. Ok you may be right, I just don't see the same thing working out. Of course I hope I'm proven wrong. But when Wells 1st came up he showed the potential that everone thought he had(Not on a consistant basis but he did show his potential). I have not seen the same potential from Borchard yet, except for the future's game last year and a couple games against the Richmond Braves(my home team). Of course that is just from my sight and some people may see it diffrently. The potential was there in Birmingham for sure. So in a sense, with a strong year in 2001 and weak years in 2001 and 2002, you can compare that to Wells' big 1999 and down years in 2000 and 2001. I am not trying to get into player analysis. That has been done for Joe ten times over.
  21. The 40-man roster is not irrelevant because teams are hesitant to put guys on it unless they are sure they plan to keep them there. Right or wrong, most teams just don't yo-yo guys on and off of the 40-man roster. There is also the money side. If they get rid of Rios then they have to eat his contract and then pay Gload Major League scale. It may seem like a small amount of money in the grand scheme of things, but it does come into play. Especially when they have no idea how Gload would play if he only plays once or twice a week.
  22. Not true at all... Toronto was ready to move Stewart or Cruz three years ago to make room for Wells, but Vernon never stepped up. I am not comparing Joe B and Vernon Wells, the players. I am only trying to point out that patience can be rewarded and that not all players develop at the same rate and without setbacks. Try not to read too much into it.
  23. You are correct, Joel. Joe B. may not turn out to be Vernon Wells, but his situation does show that patience can be a good thing. Not every prospect climbs up the ladder without setbacks.
  24. Not Troy Glaus, try again.......
  25. Those pitch counts don't concern me at all. With Prior's smooth delivery and excellent mechanics, 120 or so pitches should be no big deal.
