  1. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 12:49 PM) You could say the sky was blue and he'd come up with some bulls*** math equasion as to why it's not. Just playing along Steff... The sky isn't actually blue.
  2. I know it is in retrospect looking back now at the 2000 draft, but after looking at the draft a bit, I had a question pop up that I thought I would ask this knowledge board. The Sox took Borchard at #12 in 2000, with the Phillies taking Utley at #15. We now know today that Utley is the more 'established' MLB-level player, but even w/o such hindsight, why is it that the Sox chose to take Borchard with this pick and not someone like Utley? Utley had better numbers across the board, including power numbers, and he was/is an IF, with Borchard as an OF. So, my question is simple: why did they choose what they did? Wouldn't one have thought that equally (and a bit better) power and average numbers coming from the IF position (Utley) would be more coveted and rarer than from an OF position (Borchard)? Were the Sox that in love with Borchard?
  3. A recent article from the NY Post has a small mention of Mets GM Omar Minaya being obsessed to find the Mets a power bat at first or right field either in this trade market or in the offseason. Paul Konerko is a free agent whom Minaya likes. If he's "obsessed" over Konerko, wonder if the Sox have looked into trading Paulie prior to the deadline rather than just not resigning him? Depending on deep Minaya's obsession runs, one could try to package Konerko with Crede and maybe obtain Wright and another bat (Floyd?) and/or another prospect for the two. *shrugs*
  4. QUOTE(Wong & Owens @ Jul 21, 2005 -> 05:40 PM) Huh, it's not like SD is loaded with hitting, I wonder why they want to move him? Because he's overpaid ($9.625M for '05), a free agent after this year, not overly productive anymore and 34 years of age.
  5. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 06:43 AM) Sergio Santos just turned 22. He probably could be ready to play SS in the bigs in early 2006. That would be a good bargaining chip if the sox want to trade for a SS now [that would move Uribe to UTL] Here are his numbers coming into 05 http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/sergio_santos.shtml Enough with the free-swinging hitters with BB/K ratios of 24/89. Eech.
  6. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 03:05 PM) That's ridiculous. Alou is probably as bad as Everett in the field. About the other thing, Schmidt is an ace. Give up anything to get him. I'm sick of people caring more about prospects than proven talent. Jesus Christ, he's Jason f***ing Schmidt. OF prospects are easy to find and develop. If they want Sweeney, BMac and another mid-tier prospect, pull the trigger.
  7. Ron Kittle writes in his current book that he once asked Barry Bonds to sign a jersey for him to help raise money for charity, only to have Bonds respond, "I don't sign for white people," according to an article from the Tribune.
  8. QUOTE(DABearSoX @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 12:03 PM) was the aka needed? "As Know As maybe its a sign....." I have been called out on grammer before I just wanted to see if it felt good to do it to someone else aka = also known as
  9. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 26, 2005 -> 01:25 PM) Absolutely not. He italizled the man but he's not going to miss work because he passed away. Ozzie will morn his death and reflect but he won't miss any games. idolized?
  10. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 26, 2005 -> 09:47 AM) No we still control his rights for next season. Expect a long - term deal to get done. So Garland's 2000 season is not considered a serviceable season?
  11. Not sure if I wanted to start a new thread on this, or even sure if this is a pertinent issue in regards to contract status, but along the lines of trading talent... Is this Garland's last year/option with the Sox? Do the Sox trade him for equal talent and/or prospects towards the deadline or do they risk signing him long term and hope he keeps up his development and maturity he has displayed this year?
  12. We could always go with Dye at SS again....
  13. QUOTE(whitesox91403 @ Apr 22, 2005 -> 01:10 AM) Major League 2 was so awful compared to the original. But, good ol Harry Doyle had some good ones in 2 also. 2 by no stretch of the imaginiation comes close to the original, but it indeed funny and at least 100x better than ML: Back to the Minors. *shudder*
  14. QUOTE(El Piervizdyeguchansodnik @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 12:51 AM) They gonna show a replay of this at all? I'm gonna be at skool. Three letters: D. V. R
  15. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Mar 11, 2005 -> 10:55 AM) Frank says he wants to max out 4-5 more yrs. Let's look at what that might mean to his #'s using his 3yr avgs: Frank Car: 1925G 6851AB 1308R 2113H 444D 11T 436HR 1439RBI 1450BB 1134K 32SB 23CS .308A .429O .567S .996OPS Frank 02-04: 1309AB 217R 343H 80D 1T 88HR 246RBI 277FP 287K 3SB 2CS 262A 387O 526S 913OPS Frank Car after 2007: 8000AB, 1500R, 2500H, 530D, 13T, 530HR, 1700RBI, 1900FP, 1500K, 35SB, 25CS, 290A, 410O, 550S, 960OPS It would be interesting to know how many players are in the 500D+500HR club. Sosa Car: 2138G 8021AB 1383R 2220H 340D 43T 574HR 1530RBI 856BB 2110K 233SB 106CS .277A .348O .545S .892OPS Sosa 02-04: 1551AB 221R 425H 62D 2T 124HR 291RBI 231FP 420K 1SB 1CS 274A 366O 556S 922O Sosa Career after 2007: 9500AB, 1600R, 2700H, 400D, 45T, 700HR, 1800RBI, 1200FP, 2600K, 234SB, 107CS, 270A, 355O, 550S, 905OPS Sosa will make the HOF on the strength of his HR totals alone. (1HR/14AB) But beyond the HR's there is not much to look at. He will definitely be viewed in MLB history as a 1-dimensional player. Frank on the other hand will make the HOF on the strength of his career OPS. Currently it's 996OPS after 6900AB. He's likely to finish with 960OPS over 8000AB. Frank will be viewed in MLB history as a hitter who could do it all & will likely recieve greater stature than Sosa. Frank is going to lower his career batting average 18 points in the next three years? ......
  16. Frank is being "asked" for two reasons: 1. His outspoken words about being completely against steroids. 2. His 'connection' to Canseco (which was much prior to Canseco's 2001 season w/ the Sox) Excerpt from Canseco's book..... Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big Jose Canseco; ReganBooks, 2005; p 87-88. "One night back in 1990, I was back in Florida for the off-season, and Frank Thomas was one of the several players who had come down there for a card show. We did what we had to do at the card show, pocketed cash, and decided to go out afterward. Frank rode with me in my Ferrari. We were leaving the restaurant, and two Porsches pulled up and wanted to race me. That happened a lot in Florida. If you had a car like that, people always wanted to see what it could do. So the next thing you knew, Frank and I were racing these two Porsches -- or I guess I was doing the racing and Frank was just holding on for dear life. He was already nervous at that point. We had the Ferrari out on the highway doing about 130 miles an hour, and I didn't realize that up ahead, the highway was turning right on the short side. Frank, sitting in the passenger's seat, had a better view. I could feel him tensing up. "Jose!" he said. "Frank, I got it," I told him. "Oh s***!" he said. I downshifted and braked hard and the Ferrari went into a spin. We almost hit the railing, but I pulled out of it easily enough, and once I did, I glanced over at Frank. I've never in my whole life seen such a big guy look so scared. Frank thought for sure I'd killed us both. He was white, just stone-cold white -- which was unusual for a black man."
  17. Willie Harris for Anthony Reyes. *nods*
  18. A lot of what Pods does SB-wise depends on his OBP, obviously. In 2003, w/ an OBP of .379, Pods goes 43-10 on the basepathes (81%) In 2004, w/ an OBP of .313, Pods goes 70-13 on the basepathes (84%) So, the guy steals 33 more bags with an OBP 66 pts lower. How the hell can one forecast/trend from that? I think all anyone can do is speculate and guesstimate. I'm going to throw out a ceiling of .375/75-15 and a floor of .330/45-10. Then again, he could run rampant and steal 80+ with either a .380 OBP or .315 OBP. *shrugs*
  19. 2005 will be Sheets' 5th year of major league service. Won't a team that (potentially) acquires him in a trade also have retainable rights for arbitration for 2006?
  20. I don't think Francisco Campos is in any plans -- present or future -- for the White Sox organization. He'll be 33 this summer and thus far, he has compiled 7 solid full seasons in the Mexican League (1995-2001) and three mediocre partial seasons of AAA ball (2002-2004). I am unclear as to why he only has 17 starts in 3 minor league seasons, but he has been nothing spectacular in his minor league career (9-7, 4.84 ERA 93IP, 18BB/58K)
  21. QUOTE(Wanne @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 04:19 PM) Tampa Bay huh.....knock yourself out on that bet dude. I think mines a little safer. Not that I'd ever specifically ever put any money on the Devil-Rays themselves, rather, speaking of bets w/ larger payoffs in general. When the 2003 season began, I had $100 on the 75-1 Marlins to win the series. $7,500 later, thank you Steve Bartman.
  22. 23. If you've just got $200 to blow like that, may as well put it on Tampa Bay. At 200-1 odds, that's quite the payoff...
  24. QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 02:13 PM) Was Washington Hated By the British.. Was Lincoln Hated By South... Was MLK hated by the Bigets of America.. Great men are not liked by the Majority when they are trying to change the non-logic of the norm. All three were great men. I'm lost -- where does the comparison to you .. start?
