QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 11:37 AM) Prosecutors and judges golfing together on the weekends could be a pretty big ethical issue for both sides. And if them golfing together is swaying the way the judge hears a case, and is creating a bias, we absolutely should get new judges. The problem, as I see it, here is that the prosecutor handled this differently than he would a usual grand jury for any number of reasons. The prosecutor, by handling it that way, made it more likely that he would not get an indictment. With a community that apparently already feels that the police aren't serving their needs, finding that the prosecutor acted in a way that made an indictment less likely is... not going to help things. I'm not taking sides on Wilson's actions here... but if you can't see why the above is potentially problematic, I don't know what to tell you. So people that constantly work together even at opposite sides of the table should never spend time or *gulp* golf together???

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 11:09 AM) btw, walking through City Hall, it's interesting to me that half or more of the protesters are young white folks. If only the people in chicago cared as much about black on black crime.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 10:50 AM) I'm asking if 100 officers alone in their car try to cite these kids for jaywalking, how many of them end up shooting the kid to death? How many end up attacked? He wasnt trying to cite them, he was trying to move them out of the middle of the street so cars didnt have to drive around two kids blocking the street. Who knows the answer really? If 100 officers were punched and had their service weapons grabbed while in a car I bet 100 of them would shoot. So much heresay goes into your line of questioning and inference.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 10:44 AM) But if a jury of people couldn't find probable cause from mere factual statements of witnesses without lawyers picking them apart, what makes you think a trial, with a more stringent standard of guilty beyond reasonable doubt, is going to be anything more than a complete waste of time and money? There is no way they would have gotten a conviction and the same result as last night would have happened a few months later.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) Yes. The bottom line for me, and no amount of "some people just be itchin to violencts" will really change my mind, is that a cop tried to stop an unarmed teenager from jaywalking and the unarmed teen ended up dead. Doesn't mean Brown acted polite and did not deserve to be arrested, but he ended up dead. That doesn't scream "I'm really good at my job". In an ideal world a non-lethal item would have been used and there would have been backup there to crowd control. This is why the department, to me, should still be looked at. It was a fundamental failure of procedure from putting the guy alone in his car.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) The person yelling that was not anywhere near a crowd. Also its worth pointing out that what you just said about unreliable witnesses is entirely true. Which is why we should apply that same standard to the officer's testimony. Eh, at least we know he was there when it happened. But once again there should be another officer, a camera and audio to back all of this up

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) My concern would be that Indiana shot well yesterday, Eastern Washington wasn't on fire from 3 and Indiana still lost. Indiana will be able to score and they will have games where they are tough to stop but that is almost certainly going to be a really bad defensive team all year. They made it pretty clear they are going to live by jacking up a hundred 3's and hope that allows them to win -

QUOTE (farmteam @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 07:30 AM) I picked a good first game to not be able to watch. Well, we knew they were going to be streaky. Doesn't make losing to Eastern Washington any less stomach-turning. Its exactly what we thought they would be. Good and bad. I fully expect to see my boys lose some serious head scratchers but then take down some powerful teams. The Big Ten is talented but with really only one experienced team. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:46 AM) The DOJ almost certainly should not bring civil rights violations charges against that police officer. I think there needs to be some digging into the police department as a whole regardless on not only what transpired but also their handling of the protests. Obviously people went there to riot, but if it was handled better from the outset it may not have been the firestarter it ended up being.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:42 AM) Which is why a prosecutor with personal connections to the department and a willingness to go on national TV for 20 minutes spelling out why he personally thought the police officer was innocent should not have been the one making the decisions and offering the prosecution in this case. I can genuinely say that there was no one in this case arguing on behalf of the deceased. Given the national pressure and the personal connections you make a solid case for a special prosecutor independent of the department to make sure it is done correctly. The DOJ is still involved.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:36 AM) Yup. I'm hesitant to believe the verdict and I'm hesitant to say Wilson had malicious intent to kill. Judging from Wilson's testimony, a lot of it seemed true. Very descriptive and hard to make up. But at the same time, he had a lot of time to prepare before he had to provide testimony. When you look at some of the stuff StrangeSox posted from the testimony (getting stronger as he was being shot?), it's also hard to believe he was telling the whole truth. And oh, we need police cams. Both on the patrol car and on the police officer. Then this kind of stuff wouldn't be so gray. I'm actually currently working with a local company that is working extremely hard to make this commonplace.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:35 AM) Maybe they're upset that Mike Illitch keeps spending truckloads of money on the Tigers' bloated roster. Someone is going to wake up today and really want some crazy bread and will be PISSED>

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) As they are calling the fraternity animals are they advocating the arms of the state act against them? If they burn down a little ceasars, yes.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) Yeah, black and hispanic kids. I know most of the people here aren't racists, but in general, "animal" is used to describe minorities when they do something out of the norm. Don't pretend that's not true. LOL, no. Predominantly white at the school I was at. My wife's school was in skokie. I'm not pretending anything, I would refer to people acting like animals if they act like animals.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:19 AM) I'm trying to think of another situation where humans are termed as "animals." Maybe a prison break or prison riot? But I'd swear 90-95% of the time it's not directed at white communities in terms of in terms of typifying a pattern of behavior. For example, when those Todd Marinovich-esque parents start a fight with other parents or umpires/referees/coaches in youth or Little League sports, they're called "hotheads" or "maniacs" or "psychos" but not animals. Go to a school. "Those kids are acting like animals" is probably a daily occurrence.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:17 AM) I don't give a f*** about riots anymore. All these days leading up, and gun sales skyrocketing of the local rich white populace thinking they were going to get dragged out of their homes and beaten, and basically some 7-11s get torched by a crowd and "SEE! ANIMALS!". And are we really complaining about the f***ing haymarket riots? Jesus Christ. I hope you people watch the hunger games and go "why! WHY WOULD YOU TURN TO VIOLENCE" I can take you to the martyrs graves in forest park for the haymarket rioters that were killed.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:12 AM) I mean if we're trying to be accurate here, it is literally not animal-like behavior at all. Animals don't riot, don't start fires, don't destroy s*** like people do. In the area of "terrible, horrible things to do" humans have a pretty strong hold. Absolutely. Riots are usually a complex phenomenon, and the ones in Ferguson appear to be pent up anger and frustration over powerlessness and a perception of strong bias against their community. While theycan have a constructive outcome, usually that's not the case and it's just used as more 'evidence' that 'those people' are just hopeless. Again, speaking generally here and not about a particular poster or even SoxTalk. Animal like behavior is referring to not having the high level cognitive ability to know the difference between right and wrong and to have empathy for your fellow man. It's not taken literally as you are applying it.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) This was not an adversarial prosecution. This was a prosecutor using the grand jury as an excuse to avoid bringing charges in a case where there was enough evidence to bring charges but he didn't want to. That's why there should have been a special prosecutor appointed - it's hard in general for local prosecution to bring a case against a local police department. The department of justice still has an ongoing investigation.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) Were the following riots described as being done by a bunch of animals? riots over Joe Paterno at PSU Vancouver over the Stanley Coup pumpkin festival in Keene, NH It's typically a charge leveled at black people, and it's influenced by generations of stereotypes. Haymarket was as well if you want to get local. Animals. So was the racially charged holocaust if we want to broaden the scope outside of riots.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 09:01 AM) Animals don't have any control of fire so no, it's literally an exclusively human-like behavior. The highest level of human no doubt. Dynamite drop in. Chicago, one of the most violent if not the most violent city in America had a peaceful protest last night. It is possible to accomplish.
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 08:56 AM) I guess I don't see rioting as animal like behavior. People are frustrated. They feel like they aren't getting justice. Sometimes that anger can spill over to destructive behavior. Probably a small amount of people use the situation to cause damage or to steal for fun, but I think it's a really small amount of people. I also think throwing tear gas or smoke into a group of protesters may cause anger to boil over. You don't see burning down your community as animal like behavior? Assault, robbery, trespassing. First thing that was robbed was a liquor store. That literally had nothing to do with Mike Brown. Those are the idiots being referred to as animals.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 08:57 AM) No, in general. The Brute Caricature Yeah but that wasn't what he said.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 08:51 AM) Wilson also described Brown as looking like a Demon: Wild animal who only gets more enraged as you shoot him; a demon. This sounds like reasonable testimony sufficient enough to rule out even probable cause for an indictment. I believe he said he looked that way while he was getting punched before a shot was fired
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 08:52 AM) Black people are generally described more as animals, beasts etc. than any other race. It's not exactly a new phenomenon or dog-whistle. On here? Lol.
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 08:34 AM) People on here like to call black people "animals". Little bit disturbing. Uh what? They weren't called animals because of their race. They were called animals because they acted like animals. Who cares what color they are. The anonymous rioters were called animals too. Were you pissed?
