QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 09:42 AM) Not one bad outing, 5 straight. So this is kind of like the Floyd and Danks threads and comments from earlier in the season?

Hmmm, how about a few divey restaurants somewhat off the beaten path Tufanos on Vernon Park over ner UIC. Probably some of the better home cooked italian in Chicago. Cash only Half Shell on Diversey has some of the best crab legs around Twin Anchors on Sedgwick for ribs, really nothing else I can say there.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 06:54 PM) 1 basset hound who plays dumb, but is not, 1 Chocolate Lab with the meekest disposition in the world, but taller legs than the basset. Put them together and you have two dogs that figured out how to open the fridge, open baby-locked lower cabinets, set off any garbage booby-traps(mousetraps, shoes on the lid, weights on the lid), and now how to open the garage door to get into the garbage. Dogs are ridiculous like that. My dog figured out how to unlock and open my slidin glass door so she can chill on my balcony.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:40 PM) The Reds are awful! Their lineup is pathetic, and don't look for Volquez to return soon. The team that can hang with the Cubs is the Cardinals, but they need an upgrade at either SS or 3B. now you just jinxed the away series I am going to asshole.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:38 PM) He had been doing a fantastic job with this all year, and then starting with the Tigers series, he's been really struggling. I can't remember the last time Thornton pitched in a close game that we were winning. It's been either mop-up duty or in a tie game. There are always going to be mistakes made. To be honest, I was actually looking for Poreda in the 8th specifically to keep the ball in the park.

QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:36 PM) I've been there too many times. Typically it is against Minnesota or worse, losing a night's sleep after watching the Sox blow one late in Oakland. They're my favorite team but they are still a bunch of strangers form other parts of the country and very likely don't give a damn about you. It's not worth ruining your night. Take a deep breath and slowly exhale. Repeat if necessary. That and it would ruin 80 nights a summer which just isnt a good way to live.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:34 PM) I said it before the season started in a thread or two, if anyone in the division made a significant move I would pick them, but they didn't so I picked the Cubs and will stick with it. Now, that's subject to change if the Cards add a big bat or the Brewers add a good SP. Their payroll is over 130m and they are now .500, congratulations. The Brewers would need a serious Ace for me to think they would stay in it for the long haul.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:32 PM) Yep, their starting 5 is just so much better than Milwaukee's. When the wind starts blowing out, these guys will remember how to hit again. Especially when Aramis comes back. He's good for at least 3-5 walk offs.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:30 PM) My feeling too. I'm not overly optomistic about this years team, but they're in a crappy division so they'll stick around this year, which is fine because they are losing payroll and the young guys are hitting and Danks and Floyd are pitching MUCH better lately. I'm not taking any moral victories from this game, but they lost it when they were in a dominant position to win, it sucks, but they have 2/3 of a season left and outside of the pen they are playing much better lately. Again, if the Cubs when the division it won't be beacuse of this game, it will be because they actually play at a better level then they have been, they've had a few of these games already this year and it wasn't a magical turnaround yet. I fully expect the Cubs to still win their division, its just that terrible and their talent level is so much higher than every other team.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:28 PM) No doubt, but we’re all fans of this team. I don’t find it odd to be briefly crushed by a loss like this. I just find it weird that we immediately jump to the defense of the team here. What’s the defense for losing a game we absolutely should have won? I’m not even sure if there is one. All I know is that we have to go out and play another one of these things tomorrow. Being upset about the team losing and posting irrationally how terrible Ozzie is are two different things. The guy made several good calls this entire series and one pitcher messes up and he's terrible.

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:27 PM) Oh the irony. I just spit out some of my soda. Hopefully it shorted out your keyboard.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:26 PM) they might have to suspend the game due to DeRosa's 2 hour long standing ovation. Sucks that they miss Verlander next week. Haha, true. That Detroit offense is going to tear their pitching up though.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:24 PM) What’s your rational here, Rock? Why should we be talking down what happened here today, because we’re optimists? I love how the kids played today, but we lost a game we should have won. Why isn’t the natural reaction disappointed? Because this team is going to lose 80 games a year on average and every single one elicits an extreme reaction out of folks on here blaming whichever person they feel is at fault in their own minds. Games like this happen many times a year, and the Cubs win a TON of these at home. It happens, we played well, got a split at Wrigley, move on.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) I'll be honest, my night is completely ruined because of this. Also, it's going to be hard to handle it if this is the spark the Cubs needed. Soriano has like 20 hits this year, and 10 of those have been game winners. AS long as they continue to be the same team, and especially play the AL, they will still lose. They have just been DOMINATED by the Twins and now us, Cle will take the series as well.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:21 PM) I’m sorry guys, but when you’re up 5-1 at Wrigley with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th, and still lose. There’s no moral victory their, for me. We heard you, f*** Ozzie he's terrible, you're pissed. We got it.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) The funny thing is if you told me before series we'd split, I would have been "perfect, don't tell me any more info, I'm happy". Just disappointing how close we were to winning. Eh, we gifted one for them at home, it happens, lets get the series against them in our park and move on. Like I said, we dominated them for 17 innings at a park that is VERY tough for the visiting team. This makes me believe we are getting hot.

QUOTE (watchtower41 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:12 PM) Loving all the optimism here, but you people do just realize the Sox blew a 4 run lead with back-to-back HR's from two guys with less than 10 HR's combined since ASB last year?? This is 2003 all over again. Ohh well, at least Beckham is up. So you wanted to bring in Thornton against a guy who is a better hitter against LHP and pretty much only hits fastballs?

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:10 PM) I think it might have been a good chance to get him in there in the beginning of the 8th but had Dotel or Thorton ready. He needs to pitch or go down to AAA. Good point about Thorton, he fit what the Cubs like to do well, but after the Lee HR, he should have pitched to Soto. Maybe, but the Cubs are notorious for getting shut down by RHP, even so much that they traded one of their best players in the offseason. It happens, whatever. Split at Wrigley, win the series in Cincy, then come home and win again. I think we are heating up.

QUOTE (soxfan3530 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:09 PM) Also lost his this horrible overreaction was that our two young pitchers came into a hostile environment, lots of pressure and emotion and pitched their asses off. Fixed, but great point. Gavin out battled the Cubs "Ace" today and Danks made them do twice as many interviews about their offense because he was so good.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:06 PM) Yeah, but instead he knocked it down on a bad hop, flipped it to Ramirez, and he pu**ed out and at the same time tried to bare-hand the ball. Sorry Alexei, but between your 1 bad throw to 1st for every game and your play today, your defense has been average. Average defense is pretty good for a rookie SS, he hasnt even had a half season of pro ball at the position.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:05 PM) Wanted it more? No, Ozzie made the mistake of pitching a struggling pitcher against the heart of their order (and their only good hitters). Frankly ANY fastball pitcher we were going to put out there may have been a wrong choice. I wouldnt have minded Poreda's sinker in that situation. As we can see by Thornton's results, the Cubs just react well to hard stuff, and they were bound to get some hits at home with the wind blowing out. We dominated them on their home turf for 17 innings, I like it alot. I think we start to heat up a bit here, especially with the bottom of the order looking so sexy.
