JULIE SWIECA resigns from the score?
BrandoFan replied to southsideirish's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
That is not saying much. Hence, Michelle Pfeiffer she is not comment. Easy: neither is conventionally beautiful in a sports-bimbo kinda way. No worries, though-- in fact it works in their favor-- neither is bland and both are fan-relatable. IMO. -
JULIE SWIECA resigns from the score?

Julie praised Hendry because couldn't bring herself to praise anything ELSE about the Cubs -- not fans who attend games, not Wrigley, not Prior, not a trip to the Series that almost happened, etc. It's as if she was saying "you Cubs fans should be grateful that this smart man came into your miserable organization and actually gave you a reason to hope...It's too bad really, it won't be long before you implode like you always do". And remember, she HAS to at least maintain some kind of impartiality or she'd be fired the same day. And she STILL managed to pay less compliments to Cubs than most people would have in her position, considering right around that time Sox were falling apart and Cubs were making their move and Hendry's acquisitions Lofton, Grudz and Ramirez were CARRYING the team World Series-ward..... Her being a Sox fan doesn't mean she has to cheerlead for the team. She hates KW (Hendry praise helped her take an indirect dig at Kennty's ineptitude). She is disgusted the way the team goes about trying to win. But in the end her Sox bias shines through blindingly bright. That's part of the reason why Les Grobstein hates her-- she got his old gig, she can't help but slant toward the Sox, she is young and popular among callers, etc. And Loaiza did NOT deserve Cy Young. If Loaiza had go up against Yankees and Boston instead of Twins and KC and Tigers on consistent basis, his ERA and wins would have taken a nose-dive. Remember, there were times when E-Lo ran out of gas and was hanging pitches left and right, but since Indians and Tigers were so bad offensively, they let him off the hook and didn't ruin his confidence early on. And MVP? What the f*** are you talking about? Magglio had 99 RBI in a hitter's park, playing in a division with a s***TY pitching. Thomas is a DH who hit .265 with only 105 RBI. You had Delgado, Boone and A-Rod....Please. -

Are you for real, Rector? Oh, I get it, April Fool's was been moved up this year ala the Oscars. :headshake -
The Troll was named a successor by Boris for a reason: Communists would have won in the 1999-2000 elections and Boris would have been jailed almost immediately. It's hilarious the way Troll deals with oligarchy tho: you have 6 months to take your billions and leave the country. What, you want to stay? Ok, I'll take away your billions and put your ass behind bars. Sounds good? Grrreat.

I forgot about him. Don Rickles ni his prime couldn't be touched in his ampluah. And there is no one who can do it today. Jeoffrey Ross comes close and his material is WAY edgier, but he lacks the pure speed and bile and it's a testament to DR's skill that he could make it work even though he was saying relatively harmless things by today's standards back then. IMO he MADE the Fryar's Club when it had Sinatra, Ali, Reagan, Welles, etc and was relevant and pretty funnny. Back when Ronny was about to end his term as the governator and was the guest of honor, at one point DR grabs the mic ostensibly to thank him for all the wonderful things he's done while in office...and ends it with "I just want to say from the bottom of my heart...[goes into heavy Rickles mode]....I am SO SICK of you!" The way he said it was priceless and I WISH someone would say that to Debya. It should have been said during the inauguration dinner, in fact.

Julie's strong Sox bias combined with an even stronger dislike for everything Cubs (that's my girl!) probably played a big role in this, causing all sorts of problems with management and sponsors over the months. She is not as big a sell-out as North, so she couldn't pretend to buy into the Cubs Mania. She is not as professional as Bernsy, who can stop giving a s*** about the Sox and ridicule the hell out of KW, JR, etc on a dime. Who knows, maybe she realized that she was too young and too good-looking (I am talking radio here and besides look at Jill Carlson -- Michelle Pfeiffer she is not) to be stuck in the 10pm radio slot -- that's Grobstein domain. She might just try out for a TV gig. She is weird-pretty which makes her more memorable and her dorky sportshead personality - more relatable - unlike some other, more conventionally beautiful vacuous sports bimbos. I am suprised she hasn't tried it yet. What do they say officially? PS Does anyone know why Les Grobstein hate her so much? -
Bathing is one of the more useless inventions ever!

Yeah, of soap-droppin' and ass-tacklin' in the barracks, maybe. I thought W would win in a landslide 3 months ago. Now I am not so sure. I don't put much stock in the primary-phase polls, way too early, but you can't help but wonder when friggin' Edwards is projected to Beat bush by a solid margin - Edwards! I wish GOP will be as arrogant as our Nukey-boy about their chances in the forthcoming elections the rest of the way. I wish they are as complacent as they have been lately. They think they have it locked in the lo-ck bo-x (hehe) and the Smirkinator's recent "I am not gonna lose" is telling. Nader running as an indep this time around which should limit the "damage" especially now that many of his backers see what their folly led to in 2000.....and the unified (or rather unifying) variegated anti-Bush movement is gaining major momentum. Do you honestly think Dems have little-to-no shot in 2004, soldier?
-
Damn straight, Mr. CW. You tell em like it is.
-
Remember the 15%/presidential debates catch-22 Nader always complains about? I think he woulda kicked Gore's and Debya's ass had he been allowed to partake. That wouldn't get him elected, but it would surely humiliate both parties. let him run as an independent if he can. Good for him.

I thought Tiny Tim Russert remained utmost neutrality -- as someone of his stature would be expected.
-
Just out of curiosity, Tolleson what's your top 30? I could understand top 5 -- again, my own 15 only has 2 women -- but you mentioned top 50? I don't get it.

I meant his admin. Thanks.

Question: W banned the PBA, did he not?
-
Don't worry, it looks like Mel did some editing -- it may not be historically accurate, but the AS edge has likely been dulled. We'll see. Speaking of propaganda....have you SEEN some of the sick s*** Palestinian filmamakers, both at home and abroad, are making and winning awards for? TotW pales in comparison. :puke :puke :headshake

1) I meant women in prominent positions-- starring in movies, playing FIRST fiddle in variety/sketch shows, getting an HBO special, hosting Late Night, etc. It's dominated by males, less than before of course, but still. That can't help but reflect and shape our (audience and execs') perception and expectations at the same time. As far as dual reactions, there have been many anecdotal and serious studies done and I am afraid quite a few support this theory. Imagine a dialogue by your favorite actor read by a woman -- the content is the same, but the form/style and the associations it generates are just not. It should be reacted to the same, ideally, but in reality it's not. The repertoir, the comedic range and niche choice within which they could work and be funny was MUCH narrower for women up until VERY recently. Even talking about the 70's and 80's, a woman comedienne would not be allowed to say what Kinnison, Carlin, Pryor, etc were a allowed to. Bernard's stand-up was no less funny than Kinnisons's IMO. But she was more of a gimmick in people's minds, hence the limited exposure. Up until very recently, women were not allowed to be as funny as men and when they were, the audience would have none of it -- cringing or protesting. When women did achieve parity-- sitcoms for example -- they were generally every bit as funny as men. But could a woman do Robin Williams, Myers and Carey schtick? Sure. Would people receive it the same way? No. 2) Yeah, but remember a big part of the double-standard stuff is SUB-conscious. I find myself going in with purer intentions, but still feeling what I don't want to feel. In any case, I think you are the exception than the rule, Tollison. 3) Would you say that women poets are inferior to men? Would you say they can't do drama as well? And yet at one time, they could do neither and when they were finally allowed to, for a long time the reception was less than warm. What makes comedy inherently different? It also depends on the TYPE of comedy you go for. Let's face it, some are more gender-neutral and some are less. Hell, on my list inthis thread, most are MEN -- partially because that's the kind of humor I go for. Then again, some are just brilliant and it has nothing to do with their gender -- Bill Hicks, Jon Stewart and Chris Rock at their best transcend superficial limitations. Likewise, some women do too. 4) :headshake Then again, Jerry Lewis is by FAR not alone in that sentiment. On some level, I recognize it in myself.

I grant you that right. Beg away.

Ther are generally LESS of them out there. Up until very recently, only certain kind of time-worn comedic stereotype role-ttes were available to them. And of course, we are not wired to laugh at women as we are -- at men. The same joke told by different genders might produce different reactions in the audience. Paraphrasing J.Garofalo, all a woman has to do to be funny: be beautiful/sexy and fall down a lot. As simplistic as it sounds, that's just the way they have been perceived by the public AND showbiz execs for AGES. Even now, benefit of the doubt that we extend to men (as in: he's not funny, but he's a famous comedien, so I must cut him some slack), is not as readily available to womenfolk in comedy. Men are expected to be brutally honest, edgy, boorish, etc. But women? As soon as one is less than perfect and starts grating on the nerves even a little bit, that's it, they lose all the good will a comic absolutely has to have, and are relegated to the special status of comedy affirmative action baby -- as in, the only reason she is up there is because she is a woman -- and everyone knows women are supposed to be laughing at jokes, not making the jokes. And so forth. And you mentioned the key word "majority" -- doesn't it apply to men as well? If I have to see one more excruciating and undistinguishable Komedy Sentral Hack "Special"......There must be some kind of Hell for the Tough Crowd folk or the momos in the New Fryar's Club. :puke Me? I definately find women funny. Some examples off the top of my head: Laraine Newman was truly underrated on SNL - Guilda and Jane got all the attention, but Laraine was a better character commediene, period. When she plays a prodigal stewardess (in that famous sketch where Belushi is Don Carleone) and quotes Norman Mailer about not being able to go home....I lost my s***. Absolutely priceless. Julie Dreyfuss as Seinfeld's Elaine. Funny and original? Can't beat that. The way she gets rid of Soup Nazi? Awesome. Cheri O'Terri-- again, Shannon and Gaysteyer got all the hype -- but this little lady, especially when paired with Will Ferrel on that morning show, was hilarious. Easily as funny as anything Jim Carrey, Mike Myers and Robin Williams ever done in thei. Amy Poehler -- UCB alum, along with Seth Meyer by far the only bright spot in that eye-scratching awfulness known as "SNL of 2002-2004". When she has the right material (which is not often), like O'Terri before her, can make you snort all sorts of things through your nose. She had like literally a 2-second cameo as a disgruntled washed-up casino night club waitress during some awful Chris Kattan sketch and singlehandely almost made it work. 2 seconds, one glance at the camera. Haha. Beth Lilltleford or some such name -- the original TDS correspondent -- had her very funny moments on the show and they still haven't been able to replace her 4 years later. Amy Sedaris on SWC. Watch Diane Keaton as Vito Corleone in Sleeper or in Love & Death, Play It Again Sam and even in Annie Hall. Tell me that's not funny. Lily Tomlins's specials and SNL guest spots are always hilarious even if they're, what, 30 years old and should be really dated by now. Catherine O'Hara while not conventionally stand-up always brings the funny. I dunno....there are many others, including Garofalo (not now), Dianne Wiest, some Margaret Cho, some Jeniffer ANiston (before she got really famous), sANDR Bernardt in her 80's prime....I'll have to try to remember more later. Anyway, does anyone remember what exactly Jerry Lewis said?
-
Ever seen Garofalo phone it in for $35? And unlike Carlin, she doesn't even bother with the yellow pad......That's why I like Margaret Cho-- not as natureally caustic as Jeanine but at least has respect for her audience and PREPARES...

I know. Except for The Apprentice, of course. It' has a cool premise and you could actually learn something from it....ah, who am I kidding, it's fun to make fun of those clueless "MBA" people who I wouldn't hire to push brownies.

Oh yeah....Larry Sanders Show DVD. My mistake.
