Halladay Superthread
QUOTE (longshot7 @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 05:35 PM) Everyone has a bad day once in a while, but I guess you didnt read my post. I said trade Beckham, but no one else. F--- the future if it means another title, that's my thinking. I'd be tempted to consider trading Beckham for Halliday plus Rolen.

QUOTE (DC23MVP @ Jul 14, 2009 -> 04:27 PM) I think that a Floyd, Beckham, and Alexei for Halladay deal is pretty good for us, but I don't think we need to do it. We'd have a whole at 3B and at SS that would be hard to fill, and I think it wouldn't be worth it.

3.5 games back
QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 06:08 PM) I have a bad feeling..... We'll make another Ken Griffey head scratching move. We'll finish 10 games back. Hope I am wrong. I have a bad feeling that Carlos Quentin is going to be their 2009 version of the 2008 Griffey Jr. Hope I am wrong.

T-Flow Promoted
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 08:13 AM) So now, what happens with Armstrong and Lucy? Cole has been on fire with the bat lately, and has gotten his season numbers to a respectable level, which is impressive considering where they were in April and May. Lucy has had a few good games lately too, but he's behind Cole at the plate. Armstrong hits left, which would be more ideal to back up Flowers, but Lucy hits righty, more ideal to back up AJ. Its possible one of them will be dealt or released. Its also possible Armstrong goes down to AA to get regular reps, so he can become Flowers' backup, and allow Lucy to work with Flowers on defense. Or, given Lucy is struggling so badly at the plate, maybe its Lucy who gets demoted. ??? Cubs need a catcher...

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 10:02 PM) Wow. Makes sense because of the bat, but I really hope we're going to let this kid's skills develop behind the plate before we call him up to the Sox as a C. I'd bet almost anything that we don't. Let's hope Beckham doesn't get hurt or Ozzie will probably start Flowers at 3B. (I don't know if that should be in teal or not which is sad).

Quentin Showing off in Charlotte
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 09:59 PM) If that's true, then there's no serious mandate for them to cut salary and it's time to just start closing threads. Really. That makes no sense at all. I've always felt that 90% of what we hear/read as far as trade rumors are concerned is either pure BS or misinformation anyway.

Quentin Showing off in Charlotte
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 09:07 PM) Yes, he's got character issues and rarely hustles. Hmmmmm. Then I guess I'll retract my plan. I'd still like to have Halliday and Rolen, though. Beckham needs to be moved to his future home of 2B ASAP. Rolen's bat and glove would help the Sox and again adding Halliday without giving up Buehrle, Danks or Floyd makes the Sox very dangerous in the playoffs.

Quentin Showing off in Charlotte
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 08:58 PM) God awful. From Rotoworld: The only way I'd take him is if the Blue Jays payed at least half of his remaining contract. Plus, from what I have gathered, he is a big time d-bag. Is he? I never heard that. He always looked pretty good to me whenever I saw him play in previous years. Even though he's having a bad year this season, looking at his stats he'd still be an improvement for the Sox. If he really is a bad character guy as you say, then I wouldn't want any part of him. But I don't know that to be true.

Quentin Showing off in Charlotte
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 08:59 PM) And we tie ourselves up with these contracts, how do we extend Danks and Quentin, etc? Halliday is only signed through next year. I believe Rolen as well ( could be wrong but I think that's what I heard). So the only contract they're tied to is Rios and if he reverts to form it's not that terrible. ...And Danks and Quentin are under Sox control for a while anyway.

Quentin Showing off in Charlotte
QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 08:55 PM) so the sox should be financially irresponsible by taking on an overrated player's contract just to try and win a crappy division this year? We're not the early 2000's Yankees Rios is pretty good and the Sox have money coming off the books the next couple of years. And Halliday gives the Sox a real shot at the WS once they win the crappy division.

Quentin Showing off in Charlotte
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 08:45 PM) His contract is awful! Right. Which is one of the reasons the Jays would lower their asking price for Halliday if a team is willing to take him as well.

Quentin Showing off in Charlotte
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 08:34 PM) Put down the XBox....and if you really think they'd just give up those 3 guys for none of the Sox main guys, that's just silly. I didn't say none of their "main guys", whatever that means. I said none of their "untouchables" meaning Beckham, Floyd, Danks, or Buehrle. Personally, I'd trade ANYONE in the Sox minor league organization other than Jordan Danks (don't want to piss off the Danks family after they got rid of Boras etc.) and Viciedo (hate to mess up the "Cuban connection"). A few of their other top minor league prospects Flowers, Hudson, Carter, etc.) along with a couple of guys from their 25 man roster other than the "untouchables" should be enough. Ricciardi is reportedly anxious to dump salary.

Quentin Showing off in Charlotte
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 08:11 PM) Quentin hasn't shown any power in AAA. What makes any of us think he'll mash home runs up here...? Seriously, I'm really doubting that Carlos will do anything major for us. That's what I fear as well. The last thing we need is a singles-hitting base clogger in the middle of the lineup who is also a liability in the field. I'd like to see the Sox take a financial risk and trade for Halliday, Rolen and Rios. Rolen adds a solid bat and OBP to the lineup while improving the defense at third base and allows Beckham to move to 2B where he belongs. Rios solves the CF hole this year because even his sub-par performance so far this season is much better than Anderson/Wise and he's probably going to revert back to form at some point in the future giving the Sox a solid outfielder for the next few years. With the salary coming off the books the next couple of years, the Sox could probably afford to pay these three, and by taking on their contracts should be able to pry them away from the Blue Jays without giving up any of their "untouchables".

3.5 games back
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 12, 2009 -> 05:32 PM) We;re going to take this divison by about 2.5 games. Beckham's going to continue to hit himself into ROY contention, Poreda'll pitch well, and KW going to make a ballsy move. Those are my predictions. Hopefully while playing 2B.

Colon
Favorable scouting report on Bartolo Colon By Mark Gonzales MINNEAPOLIS - Bartolo Colon's five-inning outing Thursday night for Triple-A Charlotte was more encouraging than his April 23 outing against Baltimore, according to a major league source who witnessed both outings. "He definitely threw more breaking pitches and change-ups," the source told the Tribune Friday after Colon pitched five innings of one-run ball against Triple-A Norfolk. "You could notice he was throwing more sliders and wasn't afraid to throw them to left-handers as well as right-handers." The source was unaware that the Sox wanted Colon to throw more breaking pitches. Colon was tagged for five runs on eight hits and two walks without striking out a batter in a loss at Baltimore on April 23. "He was throwing in the 88-to-90 (mph) range," the source added. "It looked like when he wanted to throw harder, he did. He was throwing more four-seam fastballs. I could tell because he was trying to raise the hitters' eye level." Colon threw 40 of 65 pitches for strikes. He is scheduled to pitch seven innings Tuesday night for Class-A Kannapolis at Savannah. He remains in contention to pitch July 24 against Detroit. The Sox haven't decided how they will align their rotation for the start of the second half, but Mark Buehrle and Jose Contreras remain contenders to start the first two games against Baltimore. The Sox also requested waivers on left-handed reliever Jimmy Gobble for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

When is this nightmare going to stop?
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 06:32 PM) We need to trade for another starter. Yep. Ramirez, Poreda, Flowers and Richard/Hudson for Roy Halliday and Scott Rolen.

What happened to Bartolo?
Sox pitcher Bartolo Colon was expected to report Wednesday night to Triple-A Charlotte, where he's expected to pitch Thursday night. A Charlotte spokesman said Colon was expected to arrive after 6 p.m. Colon hasn't pitched in a month because of knee inflammation. Manager Ozzie Guillen joked that Colon was probably at Michael Jackson's memorial service. Per Hardball Blog

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 07:43 PM) Flowers is more valuable than Allen. Flowers should be right up there with Beckham as far as being off the trading block. Of course Flowers is much more valuable than Allen. That's why I put him in the trade for Halliday along with Poreda and Richard. I think you misunderstood my post. I said I would gladly trade Flowers, Poreda and Richard for Halliday. You have to give quality to get quality. If that's not enough, I'd gladly throw in Getz and/or Fields if they had interest in them. Now if they also want the Sox to throw in Allen, I'd part with him as well but now I'd want them to start throwing in somebody else in the trade as well. But by no means is Flowers "untouchable" when you're talking about a Roy Halliday or a Haren.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 03:51 PM) The first two players Riccardi would ask for would be Beckham and Danks, almost positive on that. Also positive in saying that Kenny wouldn't trade John or Gordon. Honestly, since those names wouldn't work, I'm sure Tyler Flowers and Poreda would have to be involved. I think the only way something between us and Toronto would happen is if our package at least involved 3 really good prospects and at least another solid one. Maybe a package like: Flowers, Poreda, Allen/Dayan and Richard. I still don't know if the Blue Jays would do that but I really think they'd want at least something along those lines. I'd trade Poreda, Richard and Flowers for Halliday easy. If they want more, I'd throw in Getz or Fields if they're interested. If they insist on adding Allen, I'd do it but would want something else coming back.

Alexei injured
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 2, 2009 -> 06:43 PM) I know, but it was reported earlier that X-rays were to be taken. One would think that if the results were available they would have mentioned "x-rays confirm just a bruised finger" or something along those lines. It probably is only a jammed/bruised finger since that's what Reifert posted, but I still would feel more confident if they would state that the x-rays confirm it. Ramirez update: X-rays revealed shortstop Alexei Ramirez suffered only a bruise on the tip of his right middle finger and he plans to return to the Sox lineup Friday night. Oh yeah! That's what I wanted to hear! Tribune Link
