  1. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ May 12, 2006 -> 07:53 AM) I dont know if he would have broken it if there was padding there. It looked like he went face first into the metal bar of the fence. If there was padding there, he might have broken it, but I dont know if he would be in the hospital waiting for surgery to repair his nose right now. The Sox should have told the Phillies they needed to Rowand-proof the outfield fences. Aaron told them they needed to Rowand-proof their fences.
  2. They also contribute in other ways.
  3. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ May 11, 2006 -> 10:06 PM) IS anyone worried that the phone company has these records to turn over in the first place? If you are all so worried about the eeeevil government spying on you, what's to prevent the eeevil corporations from accessing the same info that they already had, BEFORE the government asked for it? They sell our info to telemarkets for a profit, whats to prevent them from using the info for more nefarious reasons? Of course the phone company has these records. Did you ever receive a phone bill with your long distance calls listed? Or how about if you question the charges on your cell phone bill and they send you a detailed list of all calls made and received in the disputed billing cycle? I'm as concerned about this NSA thing as anybody, but expecting the phone companies not to keep records is unrealistic.
  4. I thought it was interesting that the DA had the cabbie that supplied the alibi rearrested on an old charge.
  5. QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ May 11, 2006 -> 02:11 PM) Why is it a tiresome argument not worthy of debate? (I combined the two posts for simplicity--I know who said what.) I think lots of people don't like Jenks being put in to clean up other peoples messes. If he's going to be used in high leverage non-save situation--then freaking use him at the beginning of the inning. Furthermore, Ozzie needs to be reminded that Cotts was the team's best and most consistent reliever from point A to B last year. He can also (and should) be used more creatively. I have no problems with how Ozzie is using Thortnon and Bmac. I mostly blame the Logan problem on KW, although I'm sure Ozzie gave him a vote of confidence during spring training. One of the reasons I think Ozzie is doing a poor job with the bullpen is that last year he proved to be one of the best in the league at getting the most out it. He let guys settle into roles, and then used them appropriately. Right now, there doesn't seem to be much rythme or reason to his pitching changes. It's tiresome because Ozzie proved over the course of last year that he knows exactly what he's doing and yet people around here are still focused on this game or that game and not the big picture. His "poor job with bullpen" is exactly what he's attempting to do this year. Before he let them settle into roles, he gave them opportunities, in order to determine what roles he let them settle into.
  6. QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ May 11, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) I wasn't. I love Tracey's stuff but until he gets better control of his pitches (20bb in like 30 innings this year) there is no way he is ready to pitch for the big club. That walks to innings pitched ratio was even worse than Haeger's. We all saw how that turned out.
  7. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 11, 2006 -> 01:46 PM) First of all, Ahmadinejad is not in command of Iran's military, so even if he wanted to do that, he'd have a bit of a problem...Ayatollah Khameni is actually at the top. Secondly, I believe that his statement that he doesn't want to see Israel exist has been massively misinterpreted. Most people have bought into him saying that Iran would attack Israel with that remark. I think that other translations have strongly suggested he was actually quoting something Khomeni said about the Soviet Union...saying basically that he hoped it would vanish from time or something to that effect. Basically it was a statement calling for something akin to regime change...his words were almost a direct quote from Khomeni, and Khomeni had no intention of attacking the Soviets when he said them. He's not a nice guy, and yes he is a holocaust denier, etc., but thus far, the evidence doesn't show him willing to launch an aggressive war against Israel. If I'm Isreal, I'd find that point of view most reassuring. Note: How many times have you seen a sentence start with 4 words beginning with capital "I"?
  8. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ May 11, 2006 -> 01:46 PM) I have to disagree with you on this. Sometimes, you are better serverd being the crusader for a single cause than trying to run a whole country. If Gore could get connected with the next President and he is put in a leadership position (say the Energy Department), that is where he can make a HUGE impact. As president, he sets policy but will be pulled in many differant directions. Elect a president who believes Al GOre's message and place Gore within the administration. I was impressed with his foresightedness. If you think about it, this isn't just an enviromental solution, but it can be applied to energy. Why not take the minds in the Silicon Valley and put them to work on solving the aternative energy question? They have enough resources that they wouldn't be intimidated by the oil barons. Come up with an alternative energy solution and have it backed by someone as strong as, if not stronger, than the oil companies and you have a real solution. One other point ... An alternative energy solution would go hand in hand with Gore's environmental agenda.
  9. QUOTE(Mplssoxfan @ May 11, 2006 -> 01:41 PM) Clarification: They didn't think that there would be so many permanent residents. I know they expected a few, but not 500,000. Do you think they anticipated Alaska and Hawaii would become states?
  10. When it comes down to it, what difference does it make?
  11. QUOTE(WCSox @ May 11, 2006 -> 01:29 PM) I wonder what McCarthy will think of this? It sounded like he wanted to get into the rotation if what's-his-name-from-last-night didn't pan out. Looks like Ozzie REALLY wants Brandon to stay in the long-relief role for now. Did you check out the stats? This guy had zero starts.
  12. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 11, 2006 -> 01:28 PM) Since illegal immigrants are by definition not citizens, 0. But the poor bastards have no representation!
  13. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 11, 2006 -> 01:21 PM) That may not be as easy as people make it seem. What exactly is a "proven reliever" anyway, the few I can think of that are consistantly good would not be offered up at the trade deadline. Middle relievers are the most inconsistant bunch in baseball. Very good point. Billy Koch was a "proven reliever." Keith Foulke was a "proven reliever" when Boston signed him. Latroy Hawkins. Eddie Guardado. Basically, it's crap shoot. Sticking with a Cliff Politte may be our best bet.
  14. QUOTE(Mplssoxfan @ May 11, 2006 -> 01:19 PM) DC, as it is now contrived, should be made a part of Maryland. That won't happen, though, so Northsider is right that this is a decent compromise. In regards to SS2K5's argument, I don't think that the people who planned DC ever expected that there would be a substantial permanent population in the Capital City. They assumed that most of the population would be transient, and citizens of another state, so there was no reason for them to have a vote in DC. I'm sorry, but our founding fathers were smarter than that. They build a city without expecting permanent residents? C'mon.
  15. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 11, 2006 -> 01:18 PM) The other thing you could do is just move DC back into VA or MD, and that would solve both problems if we are going to disregard the historical backround of this. Now that's thinking outside the box. Nice.
  16. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 11, 2006 -> 01:08 PM) So, we demoted a knuckler with no control, and called up a guy who can throw strikes. Sounds good to me. Anyone have any insight as to what this guy has? Eh, we sent down a 22 yr old kid who was nervous and had too much adrenaline pumping.
  17. QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:41 PM) That was just a photo I found on chicagosports.com. I just noticed the Cubs-Gaints photos, and I wanted to see a snapshot of Pierre robbing Bonds, and I came across that pic. Sorry, but you do come across like you're "Cubsessed".
  18. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:31 PM) This is the problem with an extremist government. If the republicans have control, you get this s***, if the democrats gain control, you will see other kinds of sick s***. The death of moderate political thought in BOTH parties in America is a bigger problem than people think. I couldn't have said it better.
  19. QUOTE(Cknolls @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:55 PM) In 30 years he will as fat and red as his father. "Lush-ious" even.
  20. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:12 PM) Fine. Bet's on then. Because I say: the loveable loser thing will never go away--it's their fallback. But really, WilliamTell is on the money: it has more to do with the park than anything. In other words, put the Sox at Wrigley and the Cubs at the Cell and I s*** you not the Cubs would be lucky to sell 5,000 per game. So this isn't so much about attendance/loyalty as location, location, location. And the best explanation I ever heard of this whole topic was this: The Cubs and Sox probably have an equal number of "diehard" fans. When it comes to CASUAL fans, though, the Cubs blow us away. Certainly, since last year, that has changed for us (hello, bandwagon!), but I thought that made a lot of sense. Because, for instance, out-of-towners wanting to have a "Chicago" experience will naturally gravitate to Wrigley, just like they want to have deep dish pizza or go to a blues bar. Having said all that, it's not a dig on Sox fans or their loyalty at all. It is what it is. You get a few more post season series at the Cell and people will gravitate there because that's where "it's happening".
  21. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:25 PM) Whoa, settle down there. This isnt an angry debate Correct. It isn't. But it is a tiresome argument.
  22. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:53 PM) He is also 28, so not exactly an up-and-coming prospect... Yes. It really doesn't matter if he's a prospect. Just can he do the job now?
  23. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:36 PM) I'm looking at balls and strikes and good swings and bad swings and shes sitting there going, "hmm..that guys ears kinda stick out" or "that guy needs a haircut" or "that guy is so skinny"....so I guess I can see why she observed it before me. I'm watching BASEBALL...she's watching people!!! She's checking out guys. Rich, athletic guys.
  24. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:52 PM) RHP - Augustin Montero (spelled his name wrong in the title) W L ERA G GS CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR BB SO 1 0 0.73 13 0 0 0 1 24.2 13 3 2 1 6 23 Well, we do have like 5 spots open. Who was he playing for? Charlotte?
  25. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:51 PM) I thought it had to be someone on the 40 man? It does. And he will be.
