  1. QUOTE(lvjeremylv @ Feb 29, 2008 -> 11:39 PM) When he's got a count that's conducive to it being successful maybe? Setting him up for failure isn't the best way to encourage him to do it again. Then again, maybe he's trying to teach him to cut down on his swing with two strikes and used the hit and run as a mechanism for doing so. You have no idea what was on his mind or what he was trying to accomplish. To criticize a manager in the first week of ST for an in game move is bordering on asisinine.
  2. QUOTE(lvjeremylv @ Feb 29, 2008 -> 03:58 PM) You're fine with inane decisions by the manager of our team? I'm not. Would you "be fine" if he decided to play Thome at 1B to get some work in for him on fielding grounders? Or how about putting our backup catcher at 1B...oh wait, that already happened last season. Spring training is the time you play with lineups, showcase some trade bait (sadly, like Joe Crede), get a look at some of our youngsters, etc. It is NOT the time you practice things that will not be taking place during the regular season. AJ should NEVER be trying to steal a base. A hit and run with a guy like Cabrera hitting would be fine, but with an 0-2 count and Josh Fields at the plate, the only guy we have that I would be OK trying to steal a base would be Owens. At least that makes some kind of sense. So just exactly when would you try and teach a promising young ballplayer the nuances of the hit and run?
  3. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 01:15 PM) Education is the parole officer for the prison of poverty. We HAVE to catch kids at an early age and convince them to have hope in their lives (lack of hope IMO is what makes it easier to commit crimes.) and that education is the key to breaking those cycles. Once they get to adult age and are doing the things that they are getting put into jail for, it is too late. Those behaviors and attitudes are so ingrained, you basically have no chance of changing them. You have to catch kids EARLY. Didn't Bill Cosby get ripped in the media for basically saying the same thing? You better check tomorrow's headlines before leaving for work.
  4. QUOTE(iamshack @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 01:04 PM) C. I support Barack. Russert busted their chops equally, and it was a nice change of style/pace from previous moderators. Nice retort. I won't even hold that first sentence against you.
  5. Choose A or B A. I support Hillary. Russert threw softballs at Obama while doing his best to bust Hillary's chops. B. I support Barack. Russert threw softballs at Clinton while doing his best to bust Barack's chops. This is pretty much what I've been reading.
  6. QUOTE(max power @ Feb 27, 2008 -> 07:58 AM) I think he got it backward. See Contreras. I got nothing backwards. I've been around this board for a while. I said exactly what I meant to say.
  7. Stats are a good tool for the sake of comparisons. However, I base most of my opinion on what I see. There are so many things stats or a box score won't tell you about a game or a player.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 04:29 PM) I was reading these posts and wanted to share some bits of wisdom from someone who is entering their late 20's. Nobody really looks back on those times in life in HS and College and says I wish I had less fun. Nobody looks back and says I wish I settled down sooner back then and I wish I experienced less. Most people express the exact opposite. Take each year with the utmost care and consideration. If your mode is one to make sure you make the most out of small connections and settling down, thats fine, but take a look at some things you may want to accomplish or experience before you get to the point in life where its impossible. I wish I had more education and less partying experiences. Just sayin'.
  9. QUOTE(Wanne @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) I liken last year's Sox team to this year's Illini basketball team. Just not an over-abundance of talent...and when the losses started piling up...their heart and desire seemed to fade. As much as I'd like to see Paulie be a more vocal leader...I'm just not sure he has it in him...nor Thome. Hopefully some youthful exuberance will spark this squad. I think the failures of the bullpen took the wind out of the sails of the team, which in turn prolonged the lack of hitting. That being said, if somebody like Paulie would have spoken up things might have been much different.
  10. The death penalty is too good for these kind of deviants. But then again, we don't want to waterboard someone that wants to kill thousands of us.
  11. QUOTE(Reddy @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 09:50 AM) haha oh sorry bout that. i have a widescreen monitor so i didnt realize that happened. I have a widescreen too. Maybe it's a setting withing Soxtalk I don't know about. I was going to mention it before, but decided it wasn't worth it. Considering your a liberal, I just stopped scrolling.

Reddy and Strange ... I think what we have here is a guy that sees a bunch of drunken fools acting like a bunch of drunken fools and he's speaking his mind. What's lacking here on his part is a certain amount of tact, which he will learn as time goes on. In fact, you guys are teaching him this lesson in this thread ... and someday, he'll realize that. Beastly ... I'm glad to help. I meant every word I said to you. Having said that, read the paragraph above and think it over.
  13. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 09:33 AM) Thank you, I know who's on the team. I just don't think their pitching will be as bad as a lot of people here think. Willis, Robertson, Bonderman, and Rodney all had down years last season. If they were on the Sox, a lot of people would be proclaiming bounce-back seasons. Since they aren't on the Sox, they are considered bad players. I expect all to be much better than they were last season. If they were on the Sox, a lot of people would be throwing them under the bus.
  14. QUOTE(Reddy @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 09:45 AM) I'm just glad you got rid of the Hillary banner in your sig. Now I don't have to scroll to the right to read your posts.
  15. I saw Keith Magnuson and Reggie Fleming in the same place at the same time and a fight DID NOT break out!

I read the first couple of pages in this thread, then abandoned it to say this to the Beastmeister: Hang in there, man. You may not be the coolest guy on campus, but you have your morals and your integrity. As long as you can look yourself in the eye in the mirror every morning, you'll be just fine. Keep fighting the good fight and march to the beat of the drummer you choose. I don't think you'll have any regrets. (root beer)

  18. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 07:57 AM) 3 hours of Geddy Lee would make me angry as well I knew somebody was going to do that. I almost made a comment about it not being musical. And I agree, I never could stand Rush because Geddy Lee sounded like nails on a chalkboard to me.
  19. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 01:09 AM) That is actually an argument that has legitimate credence. And it's one that will never end. I'd give the edge to Mays in large part because he played a more demanding position, and because he was the best player in a period that wasn't nearly as good offensively as the one currently. However, Bonds is still the only 500-500 player ever, he's one of a few 40-40 players, he has 8 gold gloves, and, regardless of how they were achieved, nobody in major league history has more home runs than him. And then some will talk about Ruth because he has the highest OPS and OPS+ of all time (in fact, no one is even close to him in OPS+...Teddy Ballgame is next and his 191 just looks miniature next to Ruth's 207). Add to it that he was a pretty damn good pitcher too, and that's another argument. He also didn't face nearly the diversity that's in today's game, both in types of pitches and ethnicities of players, so that's an argument against him. It's fun to talk about, but I don't see this argument being anything close to the '72 Dolphins argument. Ruth and Williams put up some all time great numbers, no doubt. But the difference is I have seen both Bonds and Mays play the game. There is not one little iota of a question in my mind as to which one was the better ballplayer. And for good measure, I'll throw another name out there. Roberto Clemente.
  20. Sorry about yesterday folks. I had listened to 3 hours of Rush on my drive back from Texas and was feeling unusually snarky.
  21. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 25, 2008 -> 05:19 PM) Well, Clinton will do anything to win... even if that means killing off every Obama supporter one by one. It would be interesting to see who you'd support if Clinton finds some way to get the nomination. And your reasoning for it.
  22. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Feb 24, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) You know it is, I'm blaming him for this cold and snowy Iowa winter myself. Global warming, global Cooling ... It's Bush's fault, regardless ... or is it irregardless? What's the difference?
