White Sox vs. Twins, Game 1 of DH, 7/06/07 (L)

RBI groundout for Juan, 14-8. For some reason I refuse to believe this game is for sure over with as strange as it's been. Also, I was at the game on the 4th and thought I couldn't possibly have seen an uglier game.....but today's game is proving that statement to be false. -

Mack is 8 for 8 against Baker in his career now, wonder what the record is for most at bats against one guy without making an out? And now Minnesota gets in on the act with an error, lol. -

It took us until the 6th, but that's their first inning not scoring a run. If we can just hold them down the rest of the way and hit 2 grand slams, we've got this thing. -

If you had told me we'd score 7 in the ENTIRE game with Garland going I'd say it's a win for sure. But instead, we have 7 through 5 and are somehow still getting doubled up. Baseball is a strange game. -

Mack now 8 for 8 against Baker in his career. That's something else. -

QUOTE(joesaiditstrue @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 03:00 PM) the more runs we score the more this hurts, anyone else agree? Not a surprise....Baker is pathetic. It does hurt more though, you should win against a pitcher like this. -

UGH....what a freaking waste. This should be a damn win, screw you Baker. Paulie with a missle though. -

The thing that drives me even more nuts is you waste a day like this on defense and the mound against a guy like Johan. Baker is SO awful, you know your going to score and should get a win against him. -

I can't think of the last time I saw us play a worse half game (4 and a half innings) than we did today. I'm sure I've seen it, but it's been years. -

I said to my brother watching with me "If they let Garland face Kubel, he'll hit a grand slam and we'll give up 20 runs today". I wasn't kidding about the grand slam, but I THOUGHT I was about 20 runs. Maybe not... -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 02:51 PM) He was still horrid, but you are right...if he makes those plays it wouldn't have been as bad, just like if the defense stepped up earlier you may have had a run or two less. Still, in the end, Jon got hit hard. And the Twins are continuing to hit up even after Jon is out. Well of course they are still hitting, Jon got them into a rhythm they might not get out of all weekend. But yeah, that is the worst I've seen Garland pitch in over a year. Maybe longer. ANOTHER free run. Wow. -

Another run, thanks in large part to awful fielding by Hall letting Castillo get 2 free bases. LOL another error and failed double play. Incredible. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 02:48 PM) I never blamed Ozzie. I just said Jon didn't have it, plain and simple. Yeah you could debate whether he should have brought in Masset to face Kubel, as 8-4 is still reasonable and that Grand Slam seemed inevitable if Jon was left in, but this is on Jon realistically. If he just fields his position like usualy, it's only 7-4 right now too, as bad as he was. -

At least only 11 of the 12 runs Jon gave up were earned. If he justs turns those 2 damn double plays we're only down 7-4 right now though, amazingly enough. Ah well. -

I am bewlidered as to why he left Jon in after the error and IBB. I can see you trying to stretch him since it's a doubleheader and close before that, but the grand slam could be seen coming from a mile away after the error and 4 wide to Hunter. And Hawk is this into this series because he knows damn well if we lose 3 of 4 or get swept by the Twins, at home, going into the break.....the firesale is sealed, delivered, and imminent. Just my opinion, but that's my hypothesis. -

That was the worst outing I've ever seen Garland have, which is saying a lot. That grand slam is all the more impressive because it was hit through a very strong wind which had already knocked down 3 certain home runs today. Just a combination of every pitch being down the middle, and the fact that the normally great fielding Jon cost himself an extra 5 runs by booting a pair of easy double plays. -

I'm not sure how much it matters in terms of the result, but Garland has to be taken out after he gave the IBB to Hunter. At least maybe Masset can keep it 8 or 9 to 4 and we have an outside shot, and he can eat some innings. Now it's for sure over, and Garland was really left out there to die. Ah well, that is kinda a debateable point. -

What in the hell are you doing Jermaine? Know the arms out there, but no and he's out by 10 feet. -

That 1-1 swing by Jermaine is awful. Belt hit 82 MPH pitch on a platter and he somehow swings through it. RBI fielders choice, Paulie out, Thome scores, Jermaine safe at 1st, 6-4 game. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 02:12 PM) The amazing thing about Hunter is his instincts of the crack of the bat. He gets back to the fence, and makes the jump. We have had good defensive guys like Rowand and Anderson, but neither one of those guys had the instincts Hunter has. Baseball fans that our in my age bracket (18 to 22 range or so) have been blessed to see 3 of the best instinct CFers in the history of the game in Griffey circa Seattle, Andruw Jones, and Hunter. -

Nice play by Hunter, although the LF should have easily had that. Wind is killing everything in the air today. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 02:03 PM) No reason to pull him. This is just going to be one of those games Jon needs to battle and get innings cause he'll probably give up a zillion runs but the innings are more important. Maybe he can get his release point at somepoint and not make things any worse. I wouldn't pull him yet, but you don't want to pull him since he's a doubleheader with Gavin going in game 2.....but at the same time you can't let Jon die out there, and he might at this rate. Hopefully he settles down and can get through 5 or 6 and keep it close. This game is definitely not over, Baker is mediocre. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 02:05 PM) Could Toby Hall be that bad at calling games? Toby isn't telling Jon to throw every pitch right down the middle, which is what Jon is doing. Can't blame him today. -

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 02:00 PM) I recognize that guy on the mound. Haven't seen you in awhile, Judy. Judy was afraid of hitters, this is just a case of everything he throws up there is right down the middle and getting crushed. I'm curious how long we stick with him, as I think we can score quite a few runs on Baker and win this game, but Garland obviously isn't going to do anything resembling go deep into this game unless we let him give up about a dozen runs. -

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 01:56 PM) I take it the main requirement, the only requirement to leading off for the White Sox is the ability to run. Getting on base has no place in the equation. I don't mind Andy Gonzalez hitting leadoff. He's only hitting .250, but has been patient and has a .350 on base percentage. Shoot, I'd rather see Terrero, who has a .240 average and .360 on base hit leadoff. ON BASE PERCENTAGE MATTERS OZZIE, and those 2 aren't exactly slow. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 01:57 PM) good point. Hawk is so clearly over Jerry Owens. As am I. Damn that was a big run left at 3rd. Well to be fair, that's on Toby. He had about 4 hangers he could have at least hit sac flies on that he fouled back. But still Owens is awful. This is the worst I've seen Garland look since that game against Oakland last year at The Cell. Wow. -

QUOTE(vandy125 @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 01:48 PM) I'll bet that we get an absolute crapload of complaints about Fields' glove this year because we are all used to a defensive 3rd baseman of Crede's caliber. Fields just cannot do that. Who really can? He actually got off to a pretty good start, but he's made a couple silly errors this week. But yeah, in terms of defense, your not going to replace Crede.
