Hey haters
QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ May 26, 2009 -> 09:25 AM) Pods and BA can both be hitting .330 and Ozzie will work Wise in to take some AB's away. Anderson was 3 for 5 so it's time to bench him to slow his momentum. That will teach him to respect authority. Anderson is 2nd on the team with an OBP of .381. Thome leads the team with .387. Maybe it's time to bat Brian second for a few weeks and see what happens. Everyone always said Owens was shown all this favoritism over Anderson. When the dust cleared, Owens had about 390 major league at-bats, mostly in garbage time so to speak. Anderson meanwhile was given many more chances to prove himself, as he should b/c of his tools. There are no conspiracies. If Wise comes back and the others are rolling on all cylinders, he wont play. If they arent, he'll get his chances. How far have we come when now people will start clamoring for Pods to remain in CF. Yeesh.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ May 24, 2009 -> 03:23 PM) MWAHAHAHAHAH. Even if we lose I'm still more upset with the offense. Three runs off that scrub Karstens is an embarrassment to the history of White Sox baseball. No exaggeration in that statement, either. We cant expect these guys to be a good offense anymore. We used to rely on the longball, this year we dont even have that as much. When we face a bad pitcher, I expect nothing to be a given now one way or the other.

As an old man I'll have the toughest time of all trying to explain how Nu-metal existed, as well as Scott Podsednik's baseball career.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
If a team is great in the present, a 27 yr old top flight starter would want to go to there. If a team is a question mark in the present, perhaps an excellent farm system would really sway the player....but anything less than a top notch farm would be kind of secondary. We're excited about Flowers and Allen here, but really there's a huge range of possibilities for guys like that. It's not a safe enough bet to make for what is potentially your final destination (at least in peak years).

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 22, 2009 -> 05:45 PM) We have a bunch of talent at AA isn't going to make Peavy hop on a plane. Said better than I couldve. The things that matter to us here are not the things that matter to this guy in his professional or personal life. Therefore it's wasted emotion to hate him for his decision. I'd rather he not make a decision he even halfway regrets.

O brother I cant take anymore, I wanted it to be one day and done. No dragging it out KW

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
As far as this being a selling point, I just think a lot of people here dont see how little value this holds. For a guy who is 27 and wants to finally win for once in his career, this means nothing. Plenty of teams have this. And then once he's traded for some of it, we're back to being middling plus Gordon.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
Verducci's article absolutely slaps us in the face but hey, it's what we put together this offseason. I cant fight his facts.

Who do you root for tomorrow night?
So much bitterness. Either way we werent winning this year, and we'll use that money elsewhere. While keeping Poreda perhaps.

Payroll
QUOTE (rangercal @ May 21, 2009 -> 11:03 PM) There is a difference between a top ACE and roster fillers. Right but you can add 9 or 10 wins to our year end total by either (1) adding Peavy (2) adding enough dependable bats to a roster that badly needs it Basically I just started the thread b/c of the team's multiple faces. If you're playing the kids, tell us as much. Dont tell us that payroll is maxed out if it's not. It's just weird to me b/c it's not like the Torii situation. This year we pursued pretty much no one, with good names out there. As to the point on Abreu, I think one of the aging bats couldve been moved for a guy like Figgins...but I guess we'll never know. But the larger point is the philosophy that apparently exists during trading time but snoozes when all these guys are there for the taking. In a way that leaves the farm system intact!

Payroll
So the money is there. After all. Since JR OK'd this deal, for a pitcher no less....which he's known to not want on long term deals... Then what was the problem with spending relatively little dough on Hudson, Abreu...make the deal in one way or another for Figgins... AND keep the farm system's best players. Why give away the young talent when we couldve done a lot more in free agency to solidify this team? That's a lack of foresight. Unless they just absolutely completely love Peavy alone.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:23 PM) It would be a shame to have to rid yourself of a good young player because you foolishly guaranteed a $22 million option in a trade 4 years earlier. One thing about pitchers, its not a question of if they are going to get hurt but when. I agree. We dont know what he'll be when he's due that 22M. In the meantime, by simply adding him now, we're not good enough to win a World Series in Year 1. So really I want to see a few other positions solidified before we take on a huge contract.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
What tends to happen on these boards is we slam a journalist who says the team is bad. Then the Sox go out and play badly and to a man each person who posts here, in one form or another, says the team is bad. I dont think we're a horrible franchise, but right now it's a team that has old sluggers - and the youth is starting to look like a question mark again. So i cant really blame anyone for pausing before saying we're a great destination. A second year like 2008 would help shift that. We're not there right now. Last year was great fun, but not definitive with regards to our talent level.

Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
That makes me think it could still change. I mentioned it earlier but didnt Fred McGriff once turn down a trade to the Cubs and then come back days later and accept?
-
Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
Didnt Tim Kurkjian sign seal and deliver A. Soriano to the Sox a few yrs ago?
-
Peavy Rejects Sox Offer; Deal Now Dead
Maybe this will be like when Fred McGriff said no for a few days about being traded to the Cubs and really dragged it out til agreeing. At least i think it went down that way. Guys in this situation would like to wait til other teams pop up to bid on em, but if it got to this point with SD then there must be no other deals out there. And then I gotta think a few days with the teammates would be awkward enough to usher along the green light.
