  1. lets get a mention here for Alexei's defense as well. game saver with DeJesus flying down the line.
  2. Mexicans from farther south in the country would likely think of him in that exact same way. Loaiza is from Tijuana, lived in California for part of his childhood.
  3. y'know, it's not like Masset is now barred from going 2 innings ever. if you complained about Wasserman being here, this should be embraced. In certain situations, when RHP is needed, i wont want Dotel in there. I'm fine with Masset getting more setup type appearances.
  4. And I fully understand that Walk has said he would never overhaul Quentin's swing or anything of that sort. But that's not to say he's been 100% silent around him either.
  5. All yesterday, people were saying that Walker deserves no credit for having done anything with CQ. To me, a guy who has shown great talent at the minors, yet HASNT produced at the majors..... that's the type of guy who is aided by a hitting coach. And a source for praise given to said hitting coach. That, plus CQ's having switched from NL to AL. Pitchers he has not seen, etc.
  6. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 09:39 AM) In the last few days he seems to have cut down on his swing as he gets deeper into the count, yet another bonus. This has been the most uplifting thing for me. He has shown he's not another Uribe... he really can cut down that swing and be effective with it. We dont see it a ton yet, but we've seen it. Those early count big wallops make sense now if he can really do what he did in that last at-bat last night, getting serious 0-2 and foul a bunch off.
  7. Maybe they like the idea of Masset being more of a setup guy. I'd rather they mainly use Dotel in K-needing situations anyway.
  8. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 08:19 AM) that one was huge. it would be swish in lf and owens in cf and cq probly never would have gotten much of an opportunity. whew! There's another component to this that no one mentions It's great that Alexei actually slumped in the first few games. Otherwise, we still wouldnt have seen CQ. He probably would have been sent down for Owens shortly thereafter, had Alexei hit even decently.
  9. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 10:03 PM) Big win obviously. Ramirez is interesting because he doesn't walk, yet he still gives a lot of longer, quality at bats because he fouls off so many pitches. He seems to have won a job, and you wonder if he'll eventually get a shot at leadoff. As I said, he doesn't really walk, but OC isn't getting on base much, plus Alexei is hitting for great average lately while giving long AB's and has a lot of speed. i kind of want to see him get a shot at it too we started winning games when we moved our hot hitters higher in the order now people want to use kid gloves with Alexei, but he's 26 - and as was mentioned he's almost the best option, walks or no walks. only problem is where do you then stick OC. and also....AR seems to have a knack for driving people in too.
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 10:27 PM) Lets all think in theory here. Konerko to DH, Thome to pitch hitting role. BA starts playing everyday and hits like its spring training. We are a much more versatile, quick, diverse offense than before. i like these moves. i dont like BA's obp in there everyday, but i think the value difference is made up by his range in cf
  11. Sadly, Fields' .480 SLG from last yr would be very welcome here.
  12. how bout we all edit out the scout's name from the posts. this way if there's any future information, we can share it a little more freely. i mean obviously you'd know best how far to take it.
  13. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 05:32 PM) Cabrera was good, Alexei was good (in Cuba), Q demolished the minors, Thome was good, AJ was almost as good, Swisher was good, Uribe has never been good. My point is that only 2 or 3 guys have done really well while Walker has been here, all the rest have done it elsewhere already, and now they all suck. 1) Swisher lifetime average .246 2) You yourself pretty much add two more names here. AJ you add to the list by saying "almost as good," no? This means he's been better w/ walker. So that's one. Also, Alexei was good in Cuba, not here. That is a big transition, and we're fools to think Walker has had no role in that transition. And Fields was probably better under Walk's guidance than at most other points in his pro career, no? That includes the recent dip, injury aside. And repeat that sentence for Owens, to a lesser extent. His best times have been when around Walker, for what they're worth.
  14. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 05:15 PM) This town more than any other really seems to blame the coaches/management. Maybe it's because Chicago is such a union dominated city. The players need to be held more accountable. i sure hope the guy in your av is union.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 05:05 PM) Quentin has raked at every level he's played at. Now in his first healthy season at the major league level, he's doing it again. And Walk specifically said he didn't mess with CQ. I don't think he gets credit for that. Now, with Alexei, you may be right - I don't know. But that's a whole 1 improved player, if that. What about the rest? Players come here and go downhill, and at various different ages. I don't see Walk doing them much good. A good point about Quentin. Although I'll mention that Someone must be advising him on what to do with certain AL pitching. But as you point out, on that front, we'll never quite know the whole story. That said, your logic also can extend in the other direction regarding Swisher. Oakland fans told us after the trade that he's streaky as all hell. So much as CQ is the same as his past #s indicated, Swisher is back to his old tricks. No better no worse. But we cant say Walker has been the cause of him going "downhill," as you seem to allege in the 2nd-to-last line of your post. With Swisher, I just feel that he's streaky as all get out and doomed to be hustle guy who gets walks. PK and Thome, I think, are just getting older and less able to catch up to things. The younger guys here, however, I think have been on the rise. That's enough for me to give pause to an extreme move like firing the hitting coach.
  16. QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 04:58 PM) It sends a message, obviously. At this point something needs to be done to wake them the hell up. What does not doing anything accomplish?? if right now Walk is unlocking a lot of things Alexei has never seen before, firing him tomorrow and bringing someone in with a whole new set of principles could derail that work. And Alexei's growth could be stunted. This is what not doing anything (on that front) could accomplish. People are missing the entire basis of my argument, which is that Walker is doing some good to really good things. Alexei, Quentin. The fault lies in the vets who are already set in their ways. It doesnt sound all that well thought out to say, "Just do SOMETHING." It's as if you're admitting that exasperation is taking over reason.
  17. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 03:20 PM) All right so if you're saying that it's not him and it's PK and Thome... bench them. Do SOMETHING. He's already dropped them in the order. Now here I'm with you. I like the idea of making Thome Konerko and Swisher share two spots. helps our D' but i think my answer is not BA. I want Ozuna in at 2b, Alexei in CF. This way, Ozuna can be up in either 1 or 2 hole. and it's a defensive improvement.
  18. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 04:06 PM) But what is Einstein's definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results? It's been a year and a half. How much longer do you want to wait? And unless you're going to get rid of the players themselves, I'd say: we need a fresh look at their hitting. Would it be insane for CQ to curtail what he's been doing? Should Alexei stop doing what he's doing right now? These are the guys that are probably Walk's biggest current projects.
  19. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) If a class of honor roll students wind up failing miserably one year when they have a history of succeeding you have to look at the teacher eventually. Off the analogy: Nah, it's always bad parenting. Pretty much almost always. If it's bad teachers, then how come lousy students conveniently tend to get low grades in every subject? But to stick to the analogy: I dont think Walker was ever the teacher for some of these guys. I mean, what has he taught Thome?
  20. We should also want this b/c Ozuna is an adventure at 3b, and the only non Crede capable of being there right now.
  21. What does firing Walker accomplish? The guys struggling are vets who are likely most resistant to change. What's he going to do to get PK or JT going? Seriously? The guys you'd think are least resistant to change have actually been producing. CQ, AR, etc. The guys who were fighting to make the team have hit well, that says something.
  22. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) I took it as PD was taking for granted that Coop can fix pitchers, so why not sell high and buy low since he can fix others. yea thats what i meant. not that I expect Coop can do that automatically, creating greatness from nothing every time. but i guess where i differ from others here is that I see Floyd as a somewhat worse than his present numbers indicate, and i'm willing to trade that before he gets down to those Garza-like #s. again, i do this only if it's a very helpful move (helpful to our offense). but i wouldnt expect all to agree.
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 02:23 PM) To answer your question, no. Floyd appears to be at least a serviceable starter now, who will be cheap for years to come. I would agree with your logic if we didnt have a pitching coach known for turning around the careers of guys we acquired cheaply via trade.
  24. If Floyd and a mediumish prospect could get you Brian Roberts, would you do it? As Roberts' avg takes a dip, this isnt impossible. Matt Garza netted Delmon Young, and Floyd's value right now is higher than Garza's was. But I'm not certain he's miles beyond him as a pitcher.
