What does firing Walker accomplish? The guys struggling are vets who are likely most resistant to change. What's he going to do to get PK or JT going? Seriously? The guys you'd think are least resistant to change have actually been producing. CQ, AR, etc. The guys who were fighting to make the team have hit well, that says something.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) I took it as PD was taking for granted that Coop can fix pitchers, so why not sell high and buy low since he can fix others. yea thats what i meant. not that I expect Coop can do that automatically, creating greatness from nothing every time. but i guess where i differ from others here is that I see Floyd as a somewhat worse than his present numbers indicate, and i'm willing to trade that before he gets down to those Garza-like #s. again, i do this only if it's a very helpful move (helpful to our offense). but i wouldnt expect all to agree.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 02:23 PM) To answer your question, no. Floyd appears to be at least a serviceable starter now, who will be cheap for years to come. I would agree with your logic if we didnt have a pitching coach known for turning around the careers of guys we acquired cheaply via trade.
-
If Floyd and a mediumish prospect could get you Brian Roberts, would you do it? As Roberts' avg takes a dip, this isnt impossible. Matt Garza netted Delmon Young, and Floyd's value right now is higher than Garza's was. But I'm not certain he's miles beyond him as a pitcher.

OBP too low for everyday use

QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 11:35 AM) Why on earth would you want to let go of any of the starters except MB? Don't fix something that isn't broken...the pitching isn't broken, the offense is. Trade a vet slugger or package of minor leaguers for at least some half-way decent. You wouldnt move Contreras for the right piece? He keeps going like this, he'll have some serious value at deadline. And the youth movement would remain intact. And the guy leaving is turning 50 soon.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 12:26 PM) Please explain how we have ton of pitching? We have very little minor league starting pitching depth in case someone gets hurt. You have Broadway, and then ? I'm not talking about acquiring a savior. Trade a starter for an OBP guy. Solidify the top of the order. Get someone who can hit in situations. Before magma erupts out of my brain. I think teams would want Floyd, I'd be interested to see how much. Between him and Danks there's no question who I'd rather let go of. I wouldnt be opposed to trading one of the setup guys for a hitter, if that kind of weird deal were somehow made possible.
-
Hm. What's never explored is trading what we have tons of. Pitching.

QUOTE (29andPoplar @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) Meanwhile Ned Coletti out in LA is telling reporters he might be close to trading for a veteran infielder who can fill in for Furcal. Let the Uribe speculation begin anew. prospect with arms and feet, please but kw is the type to NOT want to do this now simply b/c Guillen said what he said

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) Does anyone really think this team can win if Thome and PK struggle all season? I dont know that we know enough about the supporting cast yet. Sample sizes are so small on guys like Carlos and Alexei, we really wont know everything about this team for a while yet.
-
QUOTE (29andPoplar @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 12:05 PM) Sox wanted Rowand but on their terms. Whether that turns out to be right or wrong is another conversation. if you know all you're willing to do is underpay, then you're not REALLY wanting him. if sox wanted Rowand enough, he'd be here. it's all semantics though. i'm kind of glad they didnt sign him. we have the potential for something brighter here, even if not everything gets in place by the end of this yr. we're suddenly not all that aging, so the moves we do from here on out should reflect that.
-
soxmachine makes the good point today that KW didnt go all in for this season. knowingly had to pace himself. i cant fault that. Once Hunter was gone, kw probably figured the 09 offseason would be the next time he'd make a giant offer for someone (assuming he knew his other CF targets likely wouldnt sign) i'm actually fine with that. no sense in overpaying if they have something larger available next yr, with multiple contracts coming off the books. the fact that multiple young guys are overachieving just makes all of this hurt more right now. but a 2008 world series win is and was going to be a stretch any way you slice(d) it. then and now.

people still talking about Alexei like he's a prospect He's 26, Uribe's 29 AR needs to play

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 2, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) I hate off days sometimes. Hey, he's hitting in Baltimore so far.
-
What ever happened to Cintron? That guy was definitely the "when he hits em" type...and that's exactly what we could use right about now. Hell move Alexei to CF and get that guy back for 2b.

I want Swisher back at the 1 slot, feeling he can draw walks again. Even if OC is catching fire a bit, these are things he can do from the 2 hole. Just b/c Swish doesnt have experience in the leadoff spot doesnt mean its an absolute bad thing for him. Although, if that cant happen i would agree to get Swisher on the pine to make room for BA. Let me also add that getting Alexei in the 2 slot may seem like suicide, but if hitting in front of Carlos can get him some more fastballs, i'm all for it. No one on this team is going to be Gooch-05 version in the 2 hole anyway.

For Tampa.

What should Ozzie do with Swisher?

AJ's atbat in the 3rd inning: case in point -
Just go in standing, dude.

argh. what is the bigger problem: having no true #1 hitter or having no skilled #2 hitter. i mean AJ has done well, but he doesnt do the specific things you want from yr #2 -

lets say we keep things as they are, and we keep winning at a decent clip. come very close to winning the division, lose to Minn by one game what if right now we could maximize things by getting Swisher up in the order where he belongs? keeping things the way they are can be a negative, too. -
i'm sure this has been rehashed a bunch but can someone summarize why the hell Iguchi was traded from here?
-
by the way, hitting .307 since May 12.... roughly when he started seeing consistent atbats

this mustve happened in the part of the game i slept thru
