The TLR Manager Thread
I'm done defending his comments as not even I, who thinks TLR is doing a lot of good things, will defend this leaving the clubhouse and I've been consistent on that. I will say that if you watch his actual presser you get a very different tone than reading his words in print. You get the impression watching him that he almost considers this entertainment during a long season. I don't know if that's the right way to say it but I got the impression that after 5K or so games there really isn't much new ground for him to cover on his feelings about how the game should be played and that he knows that and his players know that.

Madrigal.
The Mariners rushed Kelenic to MLB as a publicity stunt after pissing him off by low balling him on an arb year buyout contract. If the White Sox had down that this board would have a 100 page thread on it by now. As I've said: the Mariners are one of the worst run franchises in all of pro sports. They have an argument for the worst.

Grandal
A 139 avg with a wRC+ of 127. Amazing. .9 fWAR they aren't liking his defense as much this year which yea it's been bad at times. Still a top quartile catcher in MLB.

The Makings of a Juggernaut?
One of their better known followers Aaron Gleeman posted the other day that a team that had lost 25 of their first 38 had never made playoffs. Obviously 2nd WC changes this a bit but they are in dire straights. They aren't quite dead but they are one foot in the grave.

I was going to ask and since you mentioned it: what is the most posted in thread of all time here in one season? Any idea?

The TLR Manager Thread
I think it complicates things that the Turtle himself, a Latin player, was pitching and appeared to be staring into the Sox dugout and the Twins broadcast noted it. If a younger Latin guy is glaring at another youngish Latin guy, what's the media to make of that and the prevailing "old white guys enforce the unwritten rules" easy narrative?

Big Jomboy fan. Listening to TLR it wasn't like he was even that mad. I dunno, interesting video. Jomboy has some nuanced takes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjz2UKPdFCU

The TLR Manager Thread
Well that's my point as long that "unwritten rules" shit gets passed on to someone younger it will go on. We agree the mercy rule completely eliminates this thinking. Not only does it give everybody incentive to swing away in blowouts headed to the 8th it also puts the onus on the manager to end the game so nobody can get all ass blasted if they continue and the lead balloons. In a situation like last night I'd imagine the Twins take the forfeit.

The TLR Manager Thread
I don't really see anybody defending it. I see people trying to figure out how to get rid of it. If you want a revolution you often have to wait until everybody of the thinking dies out -- literaltly. I'd prefer not to wait that long. Introduce a slaughter rule and then you completely eliminate the bullshit surrounding all of this -- including the absurdity of having a position player "save his arm and the bullpen" by lobbing up 45 mph softball pitches. I mean, why not just throw underhand at that point? If you think a mercy rule makes a "mockery" of the game, WTF does a position player doing that shit do?

I'm not going to defend his comments to the public on Yermin I think that shit should stay in the clubhouse. That said, as Tony said about Lynn's comments "he has a locker...I have an office". If these guys have beef they will talk it out. I also think that pro sports is a unique work environment (I remember we had a lot of talk about this when Sale stupidly ripped up the jerseys and the LaRoche bullshit) and that regular workplace etiquette doesn't really apply. I mean this is a sport where guys often have to be physically separated during their "work hours". It's clearly not applicable to 99.999% of people's experiences at work, and such the media and fans will react.

Eh, it would fix this issue. It sounds dumb but this is just a baseball thing. I remember in college our dipshit manager who played low level pro ball (never got above low A and was quite bitter about it) told us to go up and swing at the 1st pitch when we were down 11 runs in the 9th and he got pissed when someone took a few pitches. In his mind it was somehow disrespectul of us to try and come back. I mean we had no shot but it's sports, you still try right? This shit is permeated throughout all levels of old school meathead baseball. One way to fix it is to just give an incentive to have a 10 run lead headed to the 8th.

It's bullshit that it's "disrespect" but the Twins thought so too so HOF baseball guy was correct here. I think baseball needs a 10 run rule. If it's a 10 run game after the 7th it's a mercy. Would solve a lot of these issues.

The TLR Manager Thread
As I've said the unwritten rules here are bullshit but TLR was correct that the Twins were a) not happy and b) would retaliate. So clearly there are times when you don't swing in order to not get beaned the next day. Now, that is ABSOLUTE HORSESHIT and one of the main reasons the game we love struggles at times to connect with fans -- but TLR was correct about it.

5/19 Chicago @ Minnesota 12:10
Thing about this team is even the scrubs can contribute once and awhile. Sox have not had a team like that very often in the last 20 years.

The TLR Manager Thread
It would be quite boring if we all agreed on everything. Lot of us been here for over a decade now and at least usually it's not personal just good old fashioned strong debate. TLR is a stuck in his ways old drunk but I will defend him as long as I see good baseball two days out of three on the field. Some argue that's on the players only to play, but I feel I've seen too many talented but under achieving players to think the manager doesn't have an impact on everyday readiness. If the old fuck managed to bring his boys together accidentally or otherwise well maybe it's meant to be.

5-18-21 Games
Probably the new reality most nights with the amount of talent graduated up to Chicago the last few years. Hopefully some of the A ball types step up to fill the void. Burger is interesting. He can't actually play a MLB 3B tho, right? Still might be interesting trade bait if he continues to hit. One team might go fishing for that "1st round promise".

Nah, this team has too much talent. I'm reminded of Ozzie's response to if there was a "curse" on the South Side after so many years of losing: "no curse, just too many horse-bleep teams". This is a great team and barring injuries to the rotation or another couple key position players will contend for 90+ wins and a WS appearance.

The TLR Manager Thread
This team has too much SP to go on a long losing streak. Things can change but with Kopech as the defacto 6th starter this is a dominating rotation.

The Sox won't be the first or last pro club in history that simultaneously loathes and performs for their hated boss. Give me the hated manager that has the guys fired up to show him what they got any fucking day over the limp wristed Ventura who guys like Eaton walked all over time and time again and set a poor example for their squad.

The Sox quietly are very good at developing and finding useful catchers.

The TLR Manager Thread
Are you kidding me? Right now like it or not this is the perfect storm. You've got a young, talented, cocky team, you've got a manager that is out of touch, older, with his own history of bad behavior -- but that remains not aloof (similar to Ozzie) but just sorta on his own island but that has the gravitas of a HOF plaque and three rings on his fingers. It's like the frat united against the stick in the mud dean where after a bunch of hi-jinx at the end the credits roll and they show him doing a keg stand with the frat as everybody chants in unison. This is perfect. The Sox have stumbled into something here. Not to mention they are creating a ton of new fans. This is great, let it ride.
