  1. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 02:43 PM) It's not set, if they cut him before the 25 man roster date in early April he's only due 750k. Are we sure this is true since this is a contract and not an arbitration settlement?
  2. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 01:03 PM) Serious question, who was the last great young coach. Based on recent super bowls I'd guess someone with the last name Harbaugh? Maybe Tomlin thrown in there with a win and an appearance as well.
  3. QUOTE (gatnom @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 12:59 PM) I think a lot depends on how well the Sox do this year. They'd be more inclined to sign him if we were winning, I would think. The problem is...the longer they wait, the closer that Samardzija is to FA, and if he's repeating his opening half from last year that makes his potential case even stronger. Plus, it's not uncommon for players to say "I don't want to deal with negotiating during a season, I've got a season to focus on" and I can't blame them for that. I'd almost rather both sides think that way.
  4. Just to stress a point...saying "People are dramatically overrating the value of a comp pick" is not equal to saying that was a bad move. That is instead to point out that a comp pick has very poor value compared with, for example, keeping the pitcher around, and if we walk away with only a comp pick that's like finding a quarter on the sidewalk. Nice, but not likely to make a long term difference in your life. They made the trade because they wanted him this year and were willing to spend a heckuva lot more than I thought they would be to do it. The comp pick shouldn't even enter into that discussion, you made the trade because you wanted that player more than the other guys. Similarly, it should barely register on the list of things you care about whether you're deciding to sign him long term. What should matter for that is how he performs, whether he's worth the contract, whether we can afford it, and whether we're still looking to spend this level/be competitive for the next few years. The comp pick is negligible compared to that.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 12:32 PM) I think people underestimate how often talented teams get completely mishandled by coaches in the NFL. You don't luck into a playoff team. San Fran was a sleeping giant for forever, you couldn't understand how they were 6-10 under a coach. Jake Delhomme went from good QB to one of the worst QBs in the world and the were stuck with him for a while. So you're saying they dramatically overpaid a QB and had to figure out how to deal with that several years in a row? Hmmm...I wonder if there's a comparison I could come up with for that.
  6. Mine was 1 month before I had to defend my ph.d. So yeah.
  7. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 10:29 AM) If you were on TMobile your AT&T iPhone would work. I tried moving my iPhone4 from ATT to TMobile. It refused to make calls. Constantly. No idea why. I'd have to turn it off and on just to make calls or send/recieve a text. It would also do so at random intervals so that even while sending a "please call me" or "please get this" text/email it wouldn't go through and you wouldn't know that it had decided not to go through until hours later when it would randomly be happy again. Every time I contacted TMobile their advice was to turn the phone off and on which did work, but which had the problem of "I can't constantly turn the phone off and on just in case someone is trying to call me". I had to switch networks again after that. Maybe it was the phone, I dunno, but that was pretty rough.
  8. QUOTE (shysocks @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 11:27 AM) If they don't extend him, they know they have the QO comp pick when he leaves. That pick is arguably, hopefully, ideally more valuable than everyone they traded other than Semien. IMO, a "comp pick" is now at the point of being dramatically overrated, at least here. If you give me the choice between a comp pick and a guy at AA putting up moderately good but not spectacular numbers and ask me which one is more likely to be a big leaguer/put up >1 WAR in their career, I'll absolutely 100% say the AA guy. Something like 50% of the guys in those rounds look weak by the time they're even in the lower minors and never improve. Another big chunk is lost at the jump to AA. Then there are some who get injured. Only a fraction of comp picks ever get to the point that Ravelo or Phegley got to. Then there are guys like Phegley who get a callup and fall flat. Teams are able to stack the deck somewhat by the fact that the MLB draft has so many rounds. If you have 19 picks after the first round, and they vary from having 10% chances to make the bigs down to 1% chances in round 20, you've got a good chance to pull a big leaguer out of those rounds every year and if you're good at it or lucky maybe more than one, but adding in an extra pick with a tiny chance of making the bigs doesn't change that.
  9. QUOTE (LDF @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 07:52 PM) i am not kissing anyone butt, but think about this, if the mods and admin are heavy handed, this site would not have been as good as it is now.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 06:29 PM) Maybe they'll get Dungy. Shanahan?
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 06:23 PM) Not if you get Phil Jackson. Who is the NFL equivalent? Belichick?
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 06:09 PM) That's a good point. I would be fine with his hire. I think the NFL to a point (almost the extreme to the opposite end of the NBA) where if you failed at a point as a head coach you had proven you can't coach. I think it's possible Fox will have learned a ton after these two trips and may be very valuable. OTOH, I'd be fine either way, I just don't particularly care for Gase or Austin. If...and big if...they're in a position where keeping Cutler around seems likely, then throwing a coach like Fox at him might be a good idea. He does seem to have a history of putting QB's in a position to succeed, whether terrible (Tebow), tolerable (DelHomme), or HOF (obviously).
  13. The question I have is...is this contract guaranteed? It's been suggested that arbitration settlements are not guaranteed for anything more than $750k at the end of spring training but this is not an arbitration settlement, its' a contract.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 05:25 PM) I think he's competent, but those Broncos teams were loooaaadded with talent. Absolutely loaded. He took over a top 5 defense and then added Peyton Manning's offense to O. And the team expected about how you'd expect! That's no small accomplishment, but I don't think you could give him the Bears and see much difference. Still though, how many of those guys, both offense and defense, developed under him? This is the guy who found a way to keep tim tebow from making mistakes enough to win games. Von Miller developed under him, yes talented on his own but there have been other big pieces developing on his defense. TJ Ward, Chris Harris Jr developed into pro bowlers under him, that Brandon Marshall they have isn't bad, etc. And on the offensive side, they've seen solid development out of both their lines and their receiving corps as well. Yes, Manning likely had a lot to do with that, but they've still done it.
  15. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 04:52 PM) If I were him, I'd keep in shape for a stretch run signing. What are his options if someone comes a calling? That's a lot of effort for a pretty low return IMO.
  16. Of course, for now, the bills might well be very, very content with "making the playoffs some year." A home game on top of that would be delightful. It's been a decade and a half.
  17. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 01:43 PM) 48 Super Bowl winners. I show 6 that won with either a game manager type or average QB. Brad Johnson was the last. That was 12 years ago. You aren't winning a Super Bowl without a good to great QB. You probably aren't getting there either. What kind of threshold is "good to great"? Guys like Eli Manning and Joe Flacco have rings from recent years. Would you even put them in the top 10 of the league? "More than 80% of super bowl winners have a top 15 quarterback" is something I'd call fair. Once you get below top 15 then you're in iffy territory.
  18. QUOTE (LDF @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 01:31 PM) i don't know, i would like to know more about his other pitches. it would be nice to get a randy johnson type of a pitcher His name is Sale. Chris Sale.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 11:56 AM) Why would the Raiders trade Carr? I thought they were high on him at end of last season. If Mariota is available there, would you pass on him because of Carr?
  20. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 01:06 PM) Ranking the Top 10 rotations in the big leagues, based on input from evaluators. http://t.co/n6Qt5wMobJ News, notes and links. https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/554637606416551936 ESPN's Buster Olney says the #WhiteSox have the eighth-best rotation in baseball. I think that's pretty conservative: http://t.co/DColE4cdAe https://twitter.com/CST_soxvan/status/554694978488647680 It's conservative because they're much better "If Sale stays healthy".
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 11:28 AM) That's exactly it. With a defense as talented as their's they don't need one of the best QBs in the league, they need a guy who can move the chains, keep the offense on the field, and keep the defense fresh. IMO the first 2 are the best bets, but can't speak to the personality/cap issues for everyone sides.
  22. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 11:02 AM) I think even a guy like Matt Moore is an option if he wants to give it another chance at starting though. Cutler, Brian Hoyer, possibly Derek Carr if the Raiders were to draft a QB, Kirk Cousins, lots of potential retreads like Sam Bradford, Jake Locker. Not spectacular options but maybe something could build with in the right system?
  23. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 11, 2015 -> 06:43 PM) keep trying. You never answered, who is going to fill the void of good works after religion is ended and why aren't they doing it now? Come on Tex, you know you can't do this one, it's genuinely unknowable. First of all it makes the assumption that we're only good people when we have a religion telling us to be one, but I submit that people can be good people and do good things without charity. Perhaps you're then proposing that people would give less if they weren't scared of an angry deity, but then I submit in reply that a huge fraction of american's tax deductable donations go to supporting the presence of churches. Hypothetically if all of the money given to churches that runs churches was given to various other charities, suddenly you have several hundred billion per year to give to other charities. Running and operating churches receives more than 1/2 of all charitable donations in this country per year. Yes they do good works with some of that money, but they also buy land, build large buildings, pay salaries, etc. The US Government then chips in nearly $100 billion per year by making all of those moneys tax exempt. Perhaps some people would give less, but let's say that a portion of the money that went to preachers, building churches, Joel OsteOsteen'sd's house and private jet and so on was given instead to food banks and cancer research. You've got less overall donations and more of it actually reaching people in need. Data even suggests that the areas of the country that give the highest amounts to churches give the lowest amounts to other charities, which probably isn't surprising because their charitable donation is running their church. So what would the end result be, more or less available aid for good works? I don't know and neither do you unless you wish to argue to me that people who aren't religious are by definition less moral people.
