Official NHL 2014-15 Thread
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 10:19 PM) Pittsburgh? That's going to be one of, if not the most expensive ticket they'll have all year. Not sure on numbers, but you're going to have to pay a premium I'd guess, especially if you want to go downstairs. Yeah, wear red, or buy a cheap t-shirt or something so you have one. Lot of times you can get free shipping on nhl.com etc. Yeah, I figured this wasn't going to be cheap in the least, I just picked up an extra $4 grand this year by teaching a third class so I'm set, but just trying to say "how much would you pay for this" and the appropriate garb if I don't own the full jersey. (I've got my name in the "lottery" to try to get Cavaliers tickets when the Bulls visit in january and April, could easily afford both, just thinking now so that I can look for tickets for the next few months). -
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 06:41 PM) I think it's ridiculous that it's up to citizens for this. Again, it's a seatbelt stop with a family of 4 in it. Guns were pulled, a window was smashed, and a man tazed in front of the kids. The other cop seemed to be talking and handling the situation fine. Maybe the other cop was just s***ty at his job? So, I haven't seen anyone else post this but may have missed it, this isn't this officer's first excessive force case, he's had 3 settled out of court before.

So the Blackhawks are in town literally the night before my birthday in January. For anyone who's gone to a Hawks away game, how much is a lower deck seat worth to me and what is the appropriate thing to wear? Just red in general if I don't own the jersey? -
White Sox see multiple players on top defensive MiLB CF's

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 03:43 PM) I see Trayce's floor as the next Jordan Danks. Which is fine, as I'm sure we must be approaching the option limit for how many times we can jerk him around After what he's put up the last couple years with the bats, I'd be impressed if his floor was D2. That'd be a big improvement. -
White Sox Extension Candidates
Balta1701 replied to Donny Lucy's Avocado Farm's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I would not extend Adam Eaton with his health status. I would have extended Carlos Quentin in 2008 and am taking my lesson from what would have been a mistake. -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 04:21 PM) Guy leaves body fluids in apartment, deputy gets exposed somehow. It's not even proven that the deputy has ebola. Actually there were strong statements today saying he does not have it. He had flu like symptoms that have now passed. That is how it was transmitted to the nurse infected in spain. She apparently did a poor job of decontaminating her gloves, removed them, and touched her face.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 11:43 AM) I pretty much agree with this. But there are also times where, if signing or trading for a new player, it is at least worth knowing a bit about the personality involved. Really just looking for those outliers - guys like Zambrano whose behavior and reputation indicate they could have a significant effect on the clubhouse (and there are some on the positive end too). Then you consider that with all the other factors. But you don't want it to weigh a lot (unless it is an extreme like Zambrano) because, as you said, there's really no predicting the final outcome. Still trying to figure out the 2013 White Sox. According to Hawk, there was "not a butthole on the team" (direct quote from ~April 2013). They were then the most undisciplined team I've ever seen. Fits into that topic somehow.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 11:36 AM) Probably make for better football overall anyway. Rosters could use a few more spots for injury backups and special teams. I really was genuinely surprised that the rosters didn't expand by a couple players during the last CBA/Lockout. It seems like it would benefit both sides, health wise and allowing franchises to hold onto a couple extra people they'd otherwise have lost. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 11:03 PM) If so, then this Ebola may be morphing into a condition that can be spread in more ways than trading of bodily fluids. Hmmm.... No it isn't.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 10:17 AM) That was 20 years ago, the NFL has grown leaps and bounds since then, and the Rams have been blacked out at home for like 15 straight years. LA has grown a lot too and a very large fraction of the people who have been added to L.A. came from other cities as well. it shouldn't immediately start off with 2 teams, but it should have a modern NFL stadium with a major corporate name sponsor and at least 1 team, and it should be in the super bowl rotation. -

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 06:38 PM) If I can't get Stanton back in a straight up trade for Quintana and cash, I would want back Andrew Heaney and Chrisitan Yelich/Tyler Kolek (Who you would have to get back as a PTBNL) and another low level prospect. But I would only trade Quintana for multiple prospects that are ML ready and one or two low level ones. If I had to trade him, I would try to trade him to either the Pirates for Glasnow/Meadows/Tucker and the Dodgers for Seager/Urias/$. If I had to trade him. So 2 top prospects and the guy who was drafted before Rodon? I just wanted to point that out.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 05:41 PM) I have something weird going on - if I send an email (or anyone does) with a link to www.marqana.com - it goes to spam. I can send the exact same email with a link elsewhere, and it won't go to spam (or be rejected, which is happening now). I've run all the tests. Some outfit called mailpolice (www.mailpolice.com), which is now defunct, has us blacklisted, beyond that, we're clear. SenderScore rating of 97/100 (good) We're listed as not malicious via Google I have checked pretty much every blacklist site out there and www.marqana.com is listed as safe Our email is through Outlook 365, but I don't think this is the issue. If I send an email from my PERSONAL gmail with a link to www.marqana.com, it gets blocked. Same email does not. Anyone who has any clue, this would be greatly appreciated. We do email marketing through MailChimp to people who are opted in to our very small list (under 5,000). The issue lies within linking to our website, which is just f***ing absurd. The site is clean! Can you do a hidden HTML workaround somehow, in emails have it show the text of the website but instead actually link to a tinyurl link that goes to your website and hides the exact link from the spam filter?

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 05:13 PM) For some reason I was thinking you were confused about the extension. No, I thought it made sense. If you were going to fire him for the way 2014 ended, it should have happened in June, and if they kept him through that there's virtually nothing short of doing coke hits off of Paul George's exposed bone that should get him fired this year IMO.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 10:55 AM) Donny baseball will be fired. Wait a second, it was even you? You totally confused me here, I thought this was a blunt statement that the decision had been made an announced. Now I'm mad at you. Phooey.

2014-2015 MLB off season player movement and rumors thread

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 04:52 PM) More like "We dont want to create a precedent for teams that want to get out from under large contracts when a player tests positive" But the Yankees would have wanted that anyway and a court finding that would have been a huge boon to the owners, so why would the Steins give up that fight? Because ARoid also dropped his lawsuit. Fair trade. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 04:51 PM) Since when is the last year or two what matter? They have current players and they have developed guys like Lance Stephenson and Hill and even to an extent George who were not high high draft picks. George, being the highest of the pick. The reason they are where they are is because they have hit and drafted serviceable players and coached up and developed their picks, not because they have mad tons of FA signings or had the top pick in a stacked draft. And a lot of that development happened under their existing coaching staff. Don't ask me this, ask it to the person confused about why they extended him.

Ventura unlikely to be fired this off season
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) That is a team that had talent and had a disasterous clubhouse and underplayed their level of talent. What part of coaching to the level of talent is missing in the concept. Firing a guy cause they don't make the playoffs because you have a bad roster is just foolish, unless there were things from a player development standpoint and grander scale which you have issues with. Reality is team played hard for Robin till the end, players got along, young guys got chances, some guys took step forward, etc. Bottom line this was never a playoff team and the team didn't underachieve drastically and if it did it was because our pen was terrible not because Robin was terrible. There is zero logical reason to fire Robin given his current contract, etc. And I don't know what manager you are referring to but I'm presuming you are assuming Donny baseball gets fired. Well, he made some poor baseball decisions and there were significant chemistry issues in the clubhouse, etc. Oh and this was a 2nd consecutive year with playoff disappointments. It also was a team loaded with talent, including arguably the best 3 man rotation in baseball with Kershaw, Grienke, Ryu. Really, wait a second, didn't someone post in the NLDS thread that Mattingly was fired? D'Oh. And anyway, no 2014 is not the season Robin Ventura deserved to be fired for, 2013 was. Since that didn't happen when it should have, the next time he deserves to be fired is when the Sox spend money and the team fails. If they spend a boatload of money this offseason and they aren't a playoff team, then there better be a darn good excuse for why, because that would mean something went very wrong. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 02:25 PM) You made the remark that he needs to be held accountable depending on money spent, not me. Simply judging a manager by how the wins correlate with the payroll is ridiculous. I don't agree with everything Robin does, but unlike some, I do realize this isn't a 130 win team with a guy from a message board managing it. Baseball isn't like poker. You can't bluff your way to many wins with a bad hand, and the hand is the responsibility of someone else. If the White Sox spend money on bad players, that is on the GM. If the White Sox have good players and can't win, then by all means blame the manager. There have been so many moves made this postseason where if Robin made them, they would be considered fireable offenses here. At least one of the managers of a postseason team was just fired. I assume you think that's a bad idea? -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 01:56 PM) I thought i remembered that voiding it was a lot more complicated, and the Union didnt want to go down that road(ie. didnt want ARod to be an example that other teams would follow in a similar situation), so the Yankees were "dissuaded" Maybe a "back room" deal for Aroid dropping his lawsuit against the Yankees. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 01:58 PM) Given the internal issues they had, I don't know how you can state that. If they aren't as good because of George but overachieve based upon their talent or show signs of development, etc, then I don't see the issue. You judge him based upon the current roster / expectations. You don't go, oh they won less games this year, we should fire him. Everything you do and how you judge it is based upon a variety of factors, most specifically, how he handles the roster this year, how players develop, how the team performs compared to internal expectations, etc. If they have internal issues again this year and thus it becomes more of a theme, then he should be fired, especially since they have lost both guys who were supposedly the primary guys who brought some of those lockerroom issues. What do they have that they're actually trying to develop? They picked at the bottom of the first round each of the last couple years. Do they actually have some young player somewhere I don't know about who is key to their future, or wouldn't that instead be much more likely to occur in the 2015 draft? I mean, with George and Stephenson both gone, would anyone honestly be surprised if that was a mid-lottery team this year?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 01:54 PM) You always post like any money spent on players is coming from your bank account. Why wouldn't spending a ton of money on players who can't play be on the guy actually signing them? Is it Robin's fault Keppinger sucked? Paulino? Downs? Belisario? Then it must be Robin's pure genius that made Abreu a star. So in your world, it's totally impossible for a manager to ever make a serious difference in how a roster performs and managers should just have their positions until they want to retire. Right? After all, what serious standard are you willing to use to evaluate a manager? If the guy isn't drunk off his ass the whole day, it's the players who perform or don't perform, and that standard applies whether they blow up in the postseason or on day 1 of the season. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 01:46 PM) Considering we are getting negative plays with bad returns, how much worse could we be? He could accidentally run into Cutler on the sideline... -
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 01:46 PM) Eh, it's not that hard to fire a coach. Basically, there's virtually zero chance that they'll fire him this season since George is rehabbing. If his contract ends at the end of this year, basically the question is whether they want him back in 2015 or they're going to let him be a free agent (some team, of course, would pay good money to sign a guy with a conference finals appearance in recent memory).
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 01:43 PM) Why extend him, i would watch how he handles this season. If another locker room mutiny happens, regardless of personnel that is on the HC, that cannot be tolerated How are you going to judge that other than by "the sudden drop in performance, wins, and losses" if the team has already had a sudden drop in performance, wins, and losses associated with a terrible injury to their best player (and FA departure of their ~3rd/4th best player).
