If you hurry before it's pulled, here's the next Marvel 1-shot.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 24, 2014 -> 05:52 PM) More like no reward signing You'd look like a damn fool trying to sell Paulino for much at the deadline. Even in a best case scenario, the other GM will say "yes, but it's Felipe Paulino . . ." This low reward signing just spins the wheels of the rebuild. At which point you note his solid ERA, the fact that he hasn't been hurt yet this year, his low cost, and the fact that he has an option next year. If he continues to respond "yes but it's Felipe Paulino", you then trade Paulino to the intelligent GM in his division, thus allowing that team to win the division and causing the GM who refused to trade for a cheap pitcher having a good season because his name sounded icky to be fired for darn-near criminal negligence.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 24, 2014 -> 03:50 PM) I don't think it's realistic to expect more than 150 innings from Johnson, that's if he's good. Rookie pitcher on a team going nowhere, no reason to push him. Johnson threw 169 innings last year between the minors and the big leagues. Unless he gets hurt, the team should absolutely aim to throw hi for 175+ to condition his arm so that he's ready to go 200+ innings next year on a competitive team.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Feb 24, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) Samsung Galaxy S5 = MEH. I came to this thread wondering if anyone had commented on it. I take a lot from the fact this was the only comment I see.

Is Kansas a Laughingstock or Do You Not Care?

Congrats to Kansas on making up ground. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 23, 2014 -> 02:27 PM) I did not enjoy my AA experience. I was reading their materials and they are plugging the "New American Airlines" for whatever that is worth. They've been purchased/bought out by US Airways.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 23, 2014 -> 02:02 PM) Yea KC Johnson keeps saying that too. I'm not gonna pretend I understand the cap so I have no idea if/how it would work From my understanding they're currently safe if they don't spend any additional money beyond 10-days. They can sign people to 10-day contracts but not for the full season. They could have more room if Gibson and Noah don't earn bonuses in their contracts, but both guys seem on their way to doing so.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 03:29 PM) According to Aldridge, the Bulls are looking at signing Big Baby off the scrap heap QUOTE (scs787 @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 03:55 PM) Granger is also a rumored possibility. Last I read the Bulls were only going to have enough space under the luxury tax to sign guys briefly to 10-day contracts and cut them.

Build Your Own Deal with the Mariners

QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) Yeah me too, but also in my scenario, we wouldn't giving up anything much for him (unless he is literally a throw in for someone better we would be getting). But yeah, I would take him not expecting much but hoping he could come out surprising next Spring in better shape. If, as it was written above, the Mariners or someone would take Dunn for the guy straight up...well of course I'm doing it, but that's because you save $14 million on Dunn. Otherwise, basically not worth anything to me. -

QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 04:03 PM) The only way I would want Montero is if the White Sox made him a catcher again and also made him lose a bunch of weight this season and off-season. Have him come into next Spring Training thinner and ready to compete for a catching spot. I think he kind of got depressed after how last season went and I think he definitely is the kind of guy that needs to be in a different organization. I could be convinced otherwise, but I'm leaning in the "he was never really all that good and convinced people he was thanks to the juice" direction right now. -
I'm still annoyed at US Airways for the fact that they literally stopped taking phone calls during the snowstorm last week. I understand if your phone lines are swamped and people have to go on hold for hours, I understand your flights are going to be canceled because of the weather, but at least stick me on hold.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 02:48 PM) Texas offered him more money than the O's this week. He chose Baltimore because he wanted to start full time. $6 million more?

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 02:01 PM) Dunn for Montero striaght-up, full salary relief could be a nice deal for both teams. I'd take Montero because why not? Mariners nixed Viciedo for Franklin proposed by Hahn, so goes the rumor. M's want more but want Viciedo. Add to the above, another 3 way: Beckham to Jays Jays spect(s) to Mariners Franklin + Montero + Noesi to the Sox Viciedo + Dunn + Rienzo to the Mariners plus $14M cash Franklin is your new starting 2B until Alexei goes, then he moves to SS; Montero works with the KISS DEMON & gets his s*** under control, and at least he's a big bat candidate. Noesi to the pen, he's your real rebound guy because he's under team control; when Alexei goes, Semien comes up. I can't see the Dunn for Montero concept making any sense for the Mariners. Why would the Mariners give up $14 million for Dunn, and why would the White Sox pay a substantial amount for Dunn in order to get a hugely overweight player in return? I similarly can't imagine the White Sox paying "Dunn's entire contract" in the 2nd one while simultaneoulsy giving up those other players. -
Apparently Cruz turned down the $14 mil Q.O. at the start of the offseason. Oops.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 10:45 AM) Cruz to the Orioles. One year. $8 million Good fit for them. If both he and Jiminez perform like they did last year, and guys like Davis don't fall off majorly, they just filled some real holes that could have knocked them out of the race

Analysis of the Toolsy Outfield Four - who rebounds?

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 02:15 AM) Totally agree, I think a lot of people are being fooled by his strong AFL performance. He was absolute garbage last year in both AAA & AA. I'm not buying into the hype until see him put up some numbers in Charlotte. Also, if there's going to be a callup needed for CF, it's going to be Danks (if De Aza is the 4th OF) or Thompson. Everything I have read suggests that Trayce is a superior defender to Mitchell, plus he's actually shown some ability with the bat. I don't think Mitchell is really on the radar anymore, IMO the fluff we're hearing about his AFL performance is just trying rebuild some of his lost value. That could change with a strong start to the 2014 season, but I just don't think it's likely at this point. Does Danks have any options left? -
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 09:23 AM) If Dunn is having a monster first two months, then this team is a contender. At that point, it wouldn't be smart to trade him. Also, count me in for starting the best opening day lineup, not the most sentimental one. Don't put one guy above the team. Until this team is out of it, I don't want to start Paul just because it's his last opening day or it's his final game in Kansas City or Tampa or whereever the hell else. IMO, Adam Dunn putting up a .950 OPS the first 2 months on its own isn't nearly enough to turn this into a competitive team. If he, Abreu, Garcia, Eaton, and perhaps a few other guys all get off to good starts, and their defense isn't as awful as last year...ok, then perhaps. Adam Dunn putting up an 1.100 OPS last year doesn't keep them above water the first couple months with everything else that happened.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 21, 2014 -> 03:49 PM) MLB @MLB 50m The @Orioles are more interested in adding a bat than signing RHP Ervin Santana: http://atmlb.com/1fG0Si7 They're actually pretty weak in LF it looks like...De Aza would be a moderate upgrade there I'd say.

With the logjam, Dunn to get time in the outfield
Balta1701 replied to brian310's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Wanne @ Feb 21, 2014 -> 02:04 PM) Yeah...I have no problem with this. At least they'll be prepared if some unforeseen injuries come up. I loved Dunn's comment in the paper this morning...should be our '14 motto: "We’re not building rockets for NASA. It’s baseball.” I read this, literally, while reviewing documents for submitting a funding proposal to NASA in the next couple months. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 21, 2014 -> 01:39 PM) Are you saying that in your opinion he definitely wouldn't have had these issues had he not relieved? I think it would be far fetched to think any injury from here on out had to do with his being in the bullpen in 2010-2011. In my opinion, Chris Sale should have spent 2011 pitching in AAA as a starter for part of the year and then been called up to the big leagues whenever an opening presented itself. He should have been aimed for 150-170 innings that year, and yes, I think that would have been a very important step in preventing the tired arm periods he suffered through during 2012. And frankly, a non-exhausted Chris Sale in 2012 able to get close to 200 innings without having to skip starts and putting up an ERA that wasn't in the 4's in the 2nd half might have given the Sox a better chance to keep pace with the Tigers...and might well have won him a cy young award alreayd.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 21, 2014 -> 01:16 PM) His first 79 appearances in a White Sox uniform were from the bullpen. There is no basis for your argument. He then struggled with arm soreness and tiredness through his entire 2012 campaign and, when he first complained about arm soreness in early May, the management immediately, publicly said he was going to take over the closer's role permanently and stay there. He then repeatedly that season dealt with "tired arm" issues and velocity drops and I'm just continuing to hope there's no long-term damage.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 21, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) The White Sox most successful homegrown starters broke in as bullpen arms. Buehrle and Sale. Facing major league hitters, able to pick their spots is an advantage. Rienzo isn't in their class. He most likely is a bullpen arm, and most likely not an 8th or 9th inning guy. In the minors, let him start until he wears out. At the major league level, I think it's a little different. You have to be realistic. If Rienzo was a stud prospect, sure start him. He's not a stud prospect. And in my opinion, the White Sox came within inches of completely ruining Chris Sale entirely by putting him in the bullpen. The only reason they didn't was that he refused to go back to the pen.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Feb 21, 2014 -> 08:57 AM) We're planning on going to Cleveland and Sandusky, OH for vacation this year...hit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cedar Point, and maybe even an Indians game. As far as Cedar Point, has anyone stayed at one of the hotels on the property? I like the idea of being right there and getting the packages offered for discounted park admission. But, it seems like a lot of the reviews for those hotels are iffy. Any suggestions? Yes, I've stayed on site, and yes the hotels on site were "average" at best. I have not tried the "Sandcastle Suites" property because it's all suites, but never was impressed by Breakers. One option I haven't tried is "Breakers express". It's a very large complex just outside the Causeway entrance that they built more recently than the ones actually on the island/peninsula, and I believe you can get the same package options and possibly early-entrance onto Raptor with it. You still have to drive across the Peninsula in the morning. The last time I was there, the hotels surrounding that weren't affiliated weren't bad at all either. Nothing particularly special though, I just found one that offered a continental breakfast and took it, it worked well as a "Standard hotel room". The packages I saw to be on site weren't anything all that special and there's usually coupons available to get small to moderate discounts on your actual park entrance fees if you look for them, either online or make sure you sign up to receive their mailed pamphlet, there will be entrance coupons on those. Last time I think I bought 2 of the 2-day combo Cedar Point/Soak City passes and thanks to the continental breakfast there wouldn't have been much of a savings compared to staying on site and getting their packages. Maybe like $25 either way but not enough for me to overcome the fact that my family stayed at Breakers once and said never again.
