QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 06:24 PM) My first thought was the old, scotch tape over the print technique. Has that even been proved not possible yet? It seems like it checks the pigment?

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 06:27 PM) How were they in 2011? Almost as terrible as this year. Somehow, whoever it was that was coaching the team in 2012 did something right that was not done in 2011 and 2013.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 06:29 PM) I won't mind seeing Rienzo in the longman/spot starter role, at least at the start of next year. From a pitching standpoint, imo. the key to this offseason is whether Danks can gain a few ticks back in velocity. If he does, he'll likely return to a #3 quality SP, and may become "tradeable" if we're not contending at midseason. And it might even be wise to trade him if we ARE contending, depending on what's coming along in the minors, and how Andre performs in his role. Keep in mind why I hate this so much. We've tried it repeatedly and it keeps not working. We stuck Sale in the bullpen in 2011 and in 2012, when we really needed him, his arm flared up in April (nearly pushing him back to the bullpen permanently), his ERA went from 2.19 in the first half to 4.03 in the second half, and they were forced to skip starts regularly because his arm wasn't conditioned for it (putting more stress on the rest of the rotation). Then we did the same thing with Santiago. He didn't pick up any extra velocity, he had one good month out of the pen this year but was overall not extremely effective out of the bullpen (3.93 ERA, 1.47 WHIP) and when moved to the rotation, we suddenly found...OMG he's poorly conditioned to be a starter, he's wearing out at the end of the season, and he hasn't developed his offspeed stuff as much as we'd hoped he would. You put Rienzo out there, the end result is going to be...he's not conditioned to be a starter and he won't develop his offspeed stuff as much as he should. You'll set him back a full season or more. Either put him in AAA or trade him. Every time we do this the result is completely predictable. Putting a guy in the bullpen came darn close to ruining Chris Sale as a starter. Remember that. Where would we be if they hadn't listened to Sale in 2012 when his elbow was hurting and put him back in the pen?

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 06:22 PM) I never said it was, but bad players don't play fundamentally sound baseball. Except, apparently, in 2012 for the White Sox.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 06:14 PM) You're one of those stat people who when their conclusion is so off the mark they blame the manager instead of their "analysis". Please, tell me then why you believe the quality of fundamental play on the field this year by the Chicago White Sox is at least "acceptable".

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 06:05 PM) Ramirez, Dunn, nobody wanted them. Rios was a give away when he was being tauted by many in the media and on this message board as "the best bat on the market." You're just upset that your preseason prediction was so off. LOL, this is Greg-worthy. No one wanted Albert Pujols either. He's complete trash. Obviously. No need to think about their contract status. Pujols's HOF chances are ruined, he should be cut. Rios got us a pretty solid return altogether particularly when no money was included. You're just upset that the White Sox still have Cuban players on the roster.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 06:01 PM) Why would they have to cover for anyone? The team was bad. As much as you want to make it Ventura's fault, it's not. Roll out the exact same roster next year with a different manager and there won't be much different. It is weird that you apparently don't think the Sox, close to a billion dollar franchise, want to win. If they thought Robin was the problem, if spring training was what you claim it was, although you admit you weren't there, if he has lost the clubhouse, if he had no clue how to run a game, he would be gone. As I have stated when the Sox problems according to Soxtalk were all Greg Walkers fault, if you really think Robin is the problem and don't address the real problem, you will be putting the blame on another person not responsible shortly thereafter. We rolled out a scarily similar roster to the one with great fundamentals and 85 wins the previous season. Fine, Konerko finally got old, so that means they should have been a few games worse, and there were a few injuries early, so 78 wins should have been reasonable. The rest is all people doing worse than they should have. The best case I can make for how important a manager is for a team is the 2012 white sox. That team should have won 75 games and they won 85 games because they were well-coached and prepared for everything. This team, with most of the same players, couldn't spell "cutoff man" if they tried, let alone actually throwing the ball to one correctly.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 05:57 PM) This trade deadline where the Sox could not give their position players away was very telling. WTF? The position player they needed to trade...they traded. Oh yeah, wait, this is another complaint about how they didn't release Alexei.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 05:44 PM) Yesterday the Sox telecast mentioned again how much they went over fundamentals in spring training, and how many times they were out early working on them during the season. Unfortunately, you thinking the Sox did nothing but play drinking games in spring training was incorrect. But you know what? It didn't work. Whatever they did do, it was so ineffective that they dragged the entire team out before a game in May to start doing basics like "hitting the cutoff man" again. So feel free to tell me that they did other things than play drinking games...because the results on the field speak for themselves. This looks like a team where every fundamentals practice in spring training was replaced by a drinking game. Whatever they did, we got stuck with the results. They were a total failure. Ever think that maybe the reason why they're telling how "man, these guys did so much work on fundamentals" in the spring is that everyone recognizes how poor the actual fundamentals on the field are, so they're covering for people?

Trent Richardson didn't do much (not surprising with like 1 day of practice) but man, that was an impressive half by the Colts on the road in San Fran.

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 05:33 PM) Personally this year doesn't bother me nearly as much as a 75-80 win season would have. Nice to get a top 3 pick in the draft, get rid of some salary at the deadline and reboot for next year. It's more the "How" for me. I wouldn't be nearly as angry about being here if guys had been hurt like they were early in the year and that kept going the whole year to create a 60 win team. It's the idiocy. It's the lack of focus. If I diagrammed a blueprint of "what a team looks like when its manager gave up before the season started", this would be it.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 05:25 PM) The ability to focus is a skill and goes into player evaluation. And yet in more than a few cases the exact same players made significantly more bonehead, unfocused, idiotic plays in 2013 than they made in 2012 while playing for the same manager. Same guy, different results.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 05:16 PM) The White Sox record is an accurate reflection of the player personnel they have. And their level of preparation and interest and focus this season.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 05:17 PM) I'd move Santiago to the bullpen. We could use a nasty lefty reliever for an inning or two. I'd rather release him, frankly.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 05:01 PM) No reason to trade either. Only thing I don't want to see is one of these guys being randomly stuck in the bullpen. It keeps them from developing their offspeed stuff, prevents them from building up innings on their arm, and sets them back so far in both that you're dealing with problems from it the next season +. Sale last year, Santiago this year, every time we do it it's a terrible idea. Which is why Rienzo or Johnson in the bullpen is exactly what I'm expecting next year. And I'm going to hate it.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) Remind me of the list of guys who would have managed this team into contention this year. Based on what happened in Cleveland, Terry Francona?
-
QUOTE (spiderman @ Sep 22, 2013 -> 04:45 PM) It's been said around here often, but the rotation, with Johnson doing a nice job here in the last month of the season, looks very solid for next season. Obviously, there are no guarantees that this will hold up, and questions remain about pretty much in the rotation (not about Sale's stuff, but more durability). I don't want the White Sox to go on an off-season spending spree, but would love another chance at landing another Garcia type from another club, but not sure how they do that without moving a Quintana type. 1) Chris Sale 2) Jose Quintana 3) John Danks 4) Hector Santiago 5) Erik Johnson While that rotation makes sense, just so I say it, Rienzo would need to be traded in that case, because I would hate to see someone stuck into the bullpen and wasted for 2 years because we're too scared to make a trade.

Did the Rays need to clear a 40 man spot to activate Crain?

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Sep 21, 2013 -> 02:02 PM) I now lock my phone with a pin because the iOS7 update made me. Probably a good move. Ditto.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 21, 2013 -> 11:58 AM) Wow. Anyway I think Crain, if healthy, is a heckuva boost as the set up man. Hopefully we don't just pass on him The fact that he's missed half the season could certainly keep his FA pricetag down for next year. That said, no idea what kind of roster they're planning to put together. If they want to be competitive I'd guess they need at least 1 veteran arm in that bullpen but I would think a lefty would be a higher priority.

When the shooter bought his guns a week ago, he tried to buy an AR-15 style assault rifle but Virginia's state laws do not permit sales of those weapons to non-residents. He was unable to buy the rifle and was forced to purchase the shotgun used in the massacre instead. There's a decent chance people are alive today because of that law.
