  1. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:46 PM) Wouldn't know, I'm not poor, but unlike you, I don't pretend to be an underprivileged poor person, who knows exactly how poor people feel. You know who was actually poor, my father was. As in below American poverty poverty poor. Growing up in Nazi Germany, nearly starving on a daily basis poor. And he b****es less about this than anyone I know, including those -- such as yourself -- that were born infinity more privileged than he was. You have someone you care about put off goig to the doctor/surgery for years, writhing in pain on the floor, when you can't do anything for them because you'd have to lose your home to pay for it, no one will insure the condition because its preexisting, and then you tell me about how I'm pretending.
  2. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:45 PM) This segment of the circle jerk society needs to stop. "I applaud x whitesox player/official/mascot for x" Huh?
  3. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:44 PM) Wow, more QQ about inequality from you, how surprising. Like I said in another thread, when this continues being spouted by you, it becomes nothing but noise. You've been saying this same s*** for eons now, come up with some new material. Boo hoo, life is unfair, I'm underpaid, the rich people suck. Enough. Great, can we support doing something about it then?
  4. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:42 PM) Could you point out life is unfair in more ways? In some ways, I agree with what you're saying, but for f***s sake, after a while, it becomes noise. As do all the lectures about how great and easy it is to be poor. Lucky-duckies with their small tax bills.
  5. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:27 PM) It was a terrible call. Everybody knew Hunter was a goner , including Hunter, since he was leaving the field when he realized Darling the ump was saying go to 2nd. Dunn was in the way .Hunter juked to get around him just as Dunn moved the same way right in his path as Keppy tagged Hunter. You call the out there's no argument from any one. You make the call he did Ventura gets ejected. “@MDGonzales: Darling left a nasty voicemail message for me in 2000. I confronted him about it in 2004, he backed down.”
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:25 PM) I guess that is true now, they did step up the MiLB policy before they could get the MLB union to agree on it. I feel like it makes more sense for those guys to do it, than some of these superstars. The difference between life in AA/AAA as opposed to MLB is huge, life-changing. Not sure when ARod started his juicing, but he was gonna be a hell of a player anyway, now he's just a moron. If ARoid started juicing at 15-16 couldn't it have been the reason why he was a physical freak when he was 18 and drafted first?
  7. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 08:21 PM) What happened Rundown, Keppinger chasing hunter to 1st, ump rules that Dunn interfered with Hunters running path and awards him second.
  8. Should I also note there is no line for gas money? Or auto repair on the car you're trying to push to 250k miles?
  9. I literally burst into laughter when you accused liberals of wanting to "destroy class mobility". The USA has embarrassingly little class mobility and perhaps the greatest success of 30+ years of conservative, tax cutti policy has been to demolish what mobility their was.
  10. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 07:37 PM) I hope they ban that tool for life. That would be an impressive, ballsy move. Would the $100 million go to charity?
  11. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 07:07 PM) Or perhaps more relevant to this conversation, using a chunk of change to sign a bunch of midlevel free agents to patch multiple holes. People are getting too caught up in one marquee free agent. Assuming we spend it, I would much rather have 15 million of flexibility than use it on one pitcher off a major injury who has been nonexistent to terrible for three seasons. I don't think the sox really have "multiple holes" to fill as of now, particularly since they now have a starting catcher. That could change within the week though.
  12. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 06:39 PM) A 2013 Ford Focus which you can get for $150/mo if you're willing to learn/already know how to drive a 6 speed? Seriously? That's what someone working at McDonald's should be driving to work? If they just took the down payment for that car and bought an old Civic that $150/mo just vanishes from their monthly budget. Or they can take the goddamn bus. Unless poor people are entitled to new cars now, maybe the government will just start handing them out to the "truly needy" like they already do cell phones. I mean, how else are they supposed to get to work?! Ah yes, the great lease deals that poor people get on new cars, I remember now. And the convenient bus routes that go to all of the local fast food outlets.
  13. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 06:17 PM) Danks' contract doesn't prevent us from doing any of these things. We already have a ton of money coming off the books over the next two years. I think dumping Danks for salary relief would be a huge mistake. At some point, you can only spend so much money productively in free agency. Having the $30 million to spend in free agency might not match up with extending those guys unless some salaries are moved. I don't know which ones they will be. If Rios and Peavy are moved, then the money for all that is easy to find too, the only question remaining is whether the team has the cojones to go with 4 lefties in their rotation. A month ago I was much more interested in dumping Danks for money than I am now. He's still not 100% there, but I'll agree, he's showing some signs that he could be even more effective than he's been the last couple years. That curveball really does seem like its improved. Most of the homers he's given up are on the change, if I recall the stat from his last start correctly, and that pitch is going to be impacted a lot by his velocity.
  14. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 05:56 PM) More than offset by the $150/mo new car payment that you'd have to be an idiot to have if you're flipping burgers at the big arches. How does this person get to work? And what sort of interest rates are they able to get on a car loan?
  15. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 05:25 PM) They really need to change it to be more like the franchise tag in football where it is the average of the highest five paid players at that position plus some arbitrary amount. This really isn't bad any more. That amount might be slightly better but really, you don't deserve a draft pick compensation when you let a reliever walk and you don't deserve to lose a first round pick when you sign a reliever.
  16. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:57 PM) With CC laws on the books in every state, fire-arm deaths have been declining over the last ten years. http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/FIREARM_...DEATH_RATES.pdf Not sure why you'd think it'll make things worse. Because those numbers are improving entirely due to improvements in medical care, not due to decreases in numbers of shootings. The total number of shootings per year recorded by the CDC has actually increased by about 10,000 over that same time period, from 93,000 to about 104,000 (you have to add the deaths to the injuries reported at this website). More people are being shot every year. Fewer are dying, but more are being shot. Either guns are becoming less effective, people are becoming worse shots (guns allowed in bars as the cause?) or medical care has gotten better. It's medical care.
  17. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 05:03 PM) They CAN appeal, but his point is that if MLB decides to levy a much costlier initial penalty because they have a solid case, it would behoove the players to buy themselves a shorter sentence by waiving their appeal rights. MLB however cannot levy a more costly penalty than what is spelled out in the CBA. They can go for 100 games for these guys, I believe, because they can say they both took the products and lied to investigators, leading to the 100-game multi-offense suspension. Braun saw that and took 65 games in order to avoid the 100.
  18. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:45 PM) Name all of the marquee free agents to sign with the Sox in the last 25 years. I can think of two. I am all for holding down payroll to take money on in trades when the Sox are ready to compete, but selling low on Danks just to dump payroll hurts a lot more than it helps. If you trade him a year from now, I believe his value will be where it was pre-injury. Danks had almost the exact same career stats as Garza before their injuries, dumping him for salary relief now is just crazy. Everyone is in such a rush to dump the guy we just signed to what was viewed as a team friendly extension and then JR is going to do the same thing all over again, I just dont see it. How are you defining "Marquee"? Carlton Fisk Albert Belle Adam Dunn That's 3 big money guys right there. Do we go down the list to Dye as well?
  19. QUOTE (Wedge @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:44 PM) Perhaps silly question... is Crain a prospective Type A free agent? Doesn't really work that way any more. To get draft picks when a free agent leaves, a team has to make that free agent a "qualifying offer" that is on the order of a 1 year, $14 million deal. The type A designation isn't really out there, it's now about the qualifying offer.
  20. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:39 PM) What about the fact that Garza is a much better pitcher and not so prone to breaking down? Huh?
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:29 PM) Uhh, if you can limit your spending somewhere, you can spend more elsewhere. If we could get down to that kind of money, we could rapidly: Extend Quintana Extend Santiago Extend Beckham Extend Reed Have $30 million remaining to sign 2 marquee free agents (perhaps a 1b and an OF). All of a sudden, the team looks competitive on paper, and if someone can remind them of basic defensive and baserunning fundamentals, they could be a force in the central ASAP.
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:27 PM) Bigger issue: A fight ending in someone getting shot Drive by shooting where an 8 year old dies. I dont give a s*** whats going on in florida, the much larger issue for us is whats going on in our town. I've got a great idea. Fewer guns in the hands of lunatics. Helps both!
