QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 7, 2013 -> 05:33 PM) Snodgress, really? He's got a good chance next year to be where Rienzo is now, in Charlotte and knocking on the door.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 7, 2013 -> 05:20 PM) I don't like dumping Danks and Peavy unless Danks brings a lot more talent than I think he gets. I don't like dumping salary for s***s and giggles, though I would dump Danks if it made Peavy more likely to stay. We can then fix the imaginary "problem" of left-handedness by letting E. Johnson eventually slide into the 5th spot. If both Rienzo and Johnson are ready to take rotation spots, and they're acting like they are, they are exactly the kind of guys we want to give a shot in the rotation.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 7, 2013 -> 05:17 PM) Hopefully someone will take Danks' contract and they can keep Peavy. That would be the dream scenario. I'd like to see them both be moved. That brings back talent in the Peavy trade, clears a ton of money, opens rotation spots for several rookies who have basically earned them, and solves the "4 lefties in the rotation" problem.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 7, 2013 -> 05:11 PM) They haven't announced a makeup date with the Blue Jays yet. Once they do, the Sox have 4 off days after the break. Santiago has already spent 1/3 of the season in the bullpen. He needs innings if you want him to start next year. Danks desperately needs innings to get back in shape. Quintana clearly struggled with endurance at the start of the year. Peavy has missed a month and if the Sox keep him he'll need innings as well. Axelrod, well I'm the only one who hasn't written him off because of a lack of stuff, but he's still basically a rookie and he could benefit from innings as well. Sale is going to need to get 200 innings this year if we want him to start getting 200 innings/year. I get not throwing Sale 120 pitches. Fine. But every single other person in that rotation needs innings, as does Sale.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 7, 2013 -> 05:07 PM) I agree, and depending on what happens the rest of the month, a 6-man rotation shouldn't be out of the question. I think that's a terrible idea. Outside of Sale, these guys need innings. Sale does to a lesser extent.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 7, 2013 -> 03:20 PM) 2nd game gets a HR against a Cy Young winner. Not bad. Congrats to Phegley. About a foot away from 2 HR against him.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 7, 2013 -> 03:12 PM) And we have reached the insurmountable deficit of 2 He hasn't been perfect but Danks has been quite good again so far today.

Consecutive solid singles for Viciedo and Morel following a Phegley fly ball to the wall.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 7, 2013 -> 01:43 PM) The responsibility ultimately falls to Hernandez, but when everyone knows a kid has issues, it should be impossible for him to get through all these different coaches (HS, college, NFL) without somebody putting it to an end. The older he gets, the harder it is for it to stop. If one of those coaches put their foot down about what he was doing and who he was with, lives may have been saved. Maybe not. What nobody is sure about is whether people like Urban even tried. I don't know. The problem is...even if people try, sometimes it doesn't work. Particularly if a guy has enough money to make problems go away, which for the last few years has been the case with Hernandez. Given that it seems like this isn't the first time he's killed someone while a Patriot, I'd say there's a good chance that the Patriots staff had no idea what was going on. They may have thought he had the help he needed, or they may have just been willing to look the other way for some things while having no idea what was really happening.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 6, 2013 -> 05:45 PM) St. Louis Cardinals message boards are convinced they're trying for a top of the rotation starter. Why they would do that is beyond me Haven't they already lost 2 starters for the season?
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 6, 2013 -> 05:39 PM) Seems like the perfect way how NOT to help a hitter develop his timing and comfort level... I get it that Phegley has battled health problems since being drafted. Nevertheless, the fact is, they have to know if he can stand up to playing 5 or 6 time per week at the major league level if they want to seriously consider him as a potential starter in 2014. They should just assume he can't for now. Even if he takes over the position with the bat, you still go into next season worrying a ton about his long term health and conditioning. Nothing he does this year would convince me he will play 145 games next year.

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 6, 2013 -> 05:27 PM) I dunno. I have mixed feelings. While I feel Flowers has had his chance at full time and we know what he can and can't do, what does it matter at this point? I don't think it's as valuable to Phegley to play full time at Charlotte where he has already proven himself as it is to be in the majors getting experience even if it's every other day that he's playing. Flowers had his shot. That's not the reason to go easy on Phegley. If he played only 41 more games he match his total for last year.
-
Phegley is one guy we should be happy if robin gives him exceptionally large amounts of rest. He is not a guy we should be playing 8 out of 10 games right now. Take it easy on him at lest for this year, let him build up strength with time. 5 or 6 out of 10.

Didn't this happen already? And didn't I reply that I forgot they ever signed him the last time that happened?

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jul 6, 2013 -> 02:08 PM) I kinda doubt Houston would be interested, Gibson is an $8 million non-shooter. Josh Smith or Ryan Anderson make a ton more sense. Maybe if both of those fall through, Gibson would help on defense. Edit- Just read on rotoworld that Anderson/Asik isn't happening according to Marc Stein, so maybe slightly more possible. Kind of funny how things have switched after one year. I definitely would have taken Gibson at this time last year, but Asik had a solid year. That poison pill in Asik's contract still matters I think, right? That could prevent the Bulls from bringing Mirotic over next season if it was there.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 6, 2013 -> 01:39 PM) Andy is 24 years old and just posted an .860 OPS in Birmingham before his promotion to Charlotte. His season in AA last year was a bit disappointing with a .239 BA and .760 OPS. He isn't known to be a supremely talented prospect, but he is certainly talented enough. He has 25-30 HR potential over a full season it seems, which isn't a ton but isn't exactly Kotchman/Loney territory power-wise. He isn't a high strikeout guy and draws walks at a nice rate. He also has produced doubles at a good rate, 33 and 28 over 134 and 116 games the pas two seasons. He has posted a .711 OPS against lefties in his career and .830 OPS against lefties in AA this year. What do you guys think? He's been just okay in AAA through 12 games, but he has to have a chance to get a few MLB at-bats as the season progresses if the chips fall in his favor. He's the classic example of "eventually the numbers will tell us". If he earns a callup and can hit, great. He puts up a mid -.800's OPS at Charlotte and he'll get himself a shot somewhere

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 6, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) Jo's offense got leaps and bounds better last year. It isn't good, but he's able to make very simple moves around the basket as well as put the ball on the floor if he needs to. It resulted in him taking a few more shots than he should have, but last year was a weird one without Derrick. It might also help if he wasn't dealing with the plantar fasciitis.

Will the Sox Eat Salary to Bring More Talent

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 6, 2013 -> 01:13 PM) If we can get top talent simply by paying more money, I'm okay with that. I was planning to pay Dunn to play for the White Sox until people were willing to give up top talent, so this just accelerates the process in my book. This team will get really tough to watch if he goes, though. /selfish I'm at the point where I think they will get easier to watch. If people are going to make bonehead plays non-stop, all over the field, at least if they're rookies I can tolerate it. -
The Ecuadorian plane thing has seemingly been an excuse/motivation for a couple South American countries to officially offer Snoden asylum.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 6, 2013 -> 01:43 AM) My guess is his 98 innings in high school ball involved a fair amount of abuse. You don't often see high school pitchers get that high in IP without frequently pitching on short rest, high pitch counts, etc. In one of the threads they said that was exactly the reason, he'll pitch out of the pen this year to get some work but keep the innings down.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 6, 2013 -> 10:35 AM) Don't they have Luke Scott as DH? I know he has sucked this year...but that's not a Rays move unless we pay for 60-75% of the deal, and they're not going to do that. Then they can give us a premium talent level in order to convince us to pay more. Or they can miss the playoffs, their choice. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 07:55 PM) There have been some that suggested he would be a member of this rotation the next few years. Just watch.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 07:54 PM) I question anybody's sanity if they look at Axelrod and see the future Please question mine. A rookie 5th starter with an era around 5? Actually...not all that bad.
