QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) Sort of funny, you saying how you hate that the Sox are apparently reacting to one game's performance (which I doubt they are, but let's run with that)... and saying you hate Buddy Bell based on having Hawkins sit for... one or two games. He may also have a slight injury, or he's getting in extra side work (which I think would be great), or there was a disciplinary issue, or he's got personal matters to attend to, or who knows what else. Maybe they're angry about his twitter account...

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 01:22 PM) The fact that he hit two fastballs should some encouragement alone, and both against RHP'ers (at least for Fathom). It also might be encouraging that he had a very good game right after being benched.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 01:28 PM) Looking at what happened this off-season I wonder what the market could be for Boozer next offseason if he: 1) Stays healthy 2) Averages 15-10 When the Bulls amnesty him I imagine he'll get about the MLE.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 10:54 AM) And like I've said, be satisfied being the 90's Pacers with the modern day George Karl as your head coach. Because apparently no deal has made since for the Bulls for 6 years now. I'd rather be the 90's pacers than the 2000's knicks making nonsense trades just to make them.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 10:24 AM) Yes, I can see the guy who just offered Ventura an extension, now flipping and blaming him. To be fair...the quality of performance of the players is somewhat different between now and the point at which the extension was offered,.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 10:51 AM) I don't know what exact deals were on the table. But failing to get something done because "they didn't want to mess with the core" has been the auto-excuse since 2007. And "They should get something done even though every deal on the table makes no sense rabble rabble rabble" is the criticism I hate the most.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 10:44 AM) I'd be ok with dealing Boozer and like a 2nd round pick for Ellis just to have a scoring option to take the pressure off of Rose (and to also be rid of Boozer). A roster with both Boozer and Ellis would be the worst of all-time. Ellis is a horrible fit, I can't believe the Bulls were entertaining the idea of him when they could scoop a true gunner if they really wanted to for crying out loud. I'd have been ok with something like that too, but no idea why the Bucks would want Boozer.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 10:40 AM) I don't think it's realistic to think that GMs will be fooled by single game performances, good or bad. Scouts are looking at skills, tools, and makeup while GMs are looking at season stats. But if they were worried about Rios's recent slump, those worries may have ended yesterday.,

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 10:22 AM) lol. Typical Chicago Bulls. You'd actually give up Gibson for Ellis?

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 08:02 PM) Take a step back Peavy. We have already had enough instances of you coming back too early. Hopefully that can be someone else's worry.

I thought Verlander was supposed to no hit us?

QUOTE (mike65 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 09:21 AM) Cardinals fan here. I have enjoyed reading this thread and learning of all your insights into a potential Ramirez trade to the Cardinals. I suspect that the Cardinals have interest in Ramirez but I am unsure if the Cardinals GM (Mozeliak) will pay the pereived price. One question that I have for you is whether the White Sox would have to get a SS in return from any trade of Ramirez? If the answer is yes, then the Cardinals two choices would be Kozma or Jackson (Ryan)/AAA Memphis. I am not a GM but would this cause Hahn to pull the trigger: Wong Kozma or Jackson one additional prospect (probably on the pitching side) The Sox would take a SS in return for Alexei if a team had one they were willing to give up, but at this point, no, there's no reason to expect the Sox to demand anyone who can play SS in return for him. The Sox are basically in the middle of a lost season. They'll throw whoever can play SS at SS if they get enough return for him.

Slump? what slump?

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 05:57 PM) Zero excuse? What about if his oline sucks and he gets no protection. Even Joe Montana cant play QB if no one can protect a 3-5 step drop. They have replaced ~75% of his offensive line counting the backups and spent good money on it, they've brought in youth and veterans to go with it. They brought in a top flight O-line coach. They added to the TE spot, they've given him more than a single hot read route. He's a free agent after this year. He needs to perform now, he's playing for a contract.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 05:59 PM) Trading one of Quintana or Santiago for a cost controlled, high upside offensive player really is a good idea. Keeping them is a good idea too. Trading them because you're "rebuilding" is a Marlins-esque bad idea. My problem with this is the word "a". Given that these guys have really started to establish themselves as above average starters who will keep getting better, yes I'd consider it if there was a top flight guy coming back, but with their contract status I hope that they've set themselves up as guys who should bring back multiple pieces in addition to the headline guy.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 05:31 PM) I like Santiago quite a bit. However, if they got a cost controlled offensive player/offensive players that would be starters for years to come, you'd have to consider it. The problem with trading Santiago right now is that he hasn't come close to hitting his ceiling. The Sox have bounced him around and not given him the chance to really develop himself as a major league starter. He's got the stuff to be a top of the rotation starter. Maybe not Sale, but a serious contributor in a dominant rotation. He may never get there, but that's where he could be going if his control slightly improves. If you're not getting the return for a top of the rotation guy, then it doesn't make sense to me to deal him, because a year from now he could be throwing 200 innings with a sub-3 ERA and demanding that kind of return. (This exact quote appears to apply to Quintana also).

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 04:55 PM) Always...While the mods change my name (I have a request in) perhaps they can also change my little tagline to "Ever the optimist". I just really think Cutler is set up to succeed. I think they've done enough with the OL to keep Jay upright A LOT more often. The addition of a competent TE, who I believe will be even better here than he was in NY, will be huge. Plus I really do love the Trestman hiring, if for no other reason than the fact that he loves to throw the RB the ball (if the past is any indication) and Matt Forte is one of the best receiving RBs in the league. Getting Forte out in space more often should be a huge plus for the offense. There is literally zero excuse remaining for Jay Cutler not to have an all pro season this year. If he can't do it this year, he can't do it.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 04:54 PM) Of course it's an assumption, no can actually predict the future. But anytime you see an exceptional performance, whether very good or very bad, it is most likely that future performance will regress toward average. If the team isn't a piece or two away, how do you expect to add to it in the offseason such that it has the chance to win and increase attendance in 2014? I think this team could be a piece or two away...but it requires guys they have right now like Phegley and Viciedo to turn into useful pieces by next year.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) Pittsburgh is the most obvious fit. Fairly deep in decent position player talent on the farm, too. Would imagine they'd want some cash thrown in but this is really a perfect match. They have the talent to make a run at the real top guy on the market, Giancarlo Stanton, if they wanted to go for the grand slam.

Also tell me if I'm wrong but don't think I saw this note on Portland's demands for Aldridge: Yeah, so it sounds like Noah + Butler was the real asking price.

Only 34 players remain in the entire league who could be subject to the amnesty provision.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 01:38 PM) Jose Fernandez far and away is their best pitcher... This thread only proves there is really no good options that 1) aren't too expensive, like Choo or Ellsbury, 2) are capable of hitting both lefties and rights, and 3) aren't too old. If the Sox can clear some salary elsewhere and move Rios, Choo fits a whole lot of this team's needs.
