QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 09:29 AM) If he could play SS with those numbers, he would have 5X the value. Unfortunately, he MIGHT end up getting stuck behind Beckham....and then Micah Johnson and Anderson are charging from behind, with Carlos Sanchez in front of him (maybe not minor league position-wise, but logical big league destination). Really though...the hope is that one of those guys can come in and be a big league contributor. You're lucky if 1 of them does.

You're 100% correct, Luol Deng is not a great #2 option, but throwing out ideas that anyone with a shred of reason will scoff at as a way to replace him is not the way to convince me that extending him is a bad idea. Saying "Extending Deng is a terrible idea, if you don't you might be able to go after Carmelo" in 2014 is a selling point on extending Deng when you factor everything in. Give me a decent reason to believe extending Deng is a bad idea and I'll happily agree it's a bad idea.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 09:22 AM) Could it be the opposite? The Sox like him but feel he will get the most back of any young starter not including sale?- I can't figure out why he would. Are teams that obsessed with strikeouts and nothing else? I mean, he ought to bring back a fortune if he's traded, but I can't figure out why he'd be so much more valuable than Quintana for example.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) Where did you get the trade part? Because they were hesitating to name him in the future rotation and putting Erik Johnson's name out there as well? I don't understand why they would ever want to hold onto Peavy and Danks ($30+ million per year, 25% of payroll) when they already have Santiago and Quintana...? If they're wanting to compete next year, I'd rather have Sale, Peavy, Danks, Quintana, player X than Sale, Quintana, Santiago, Johnson, player x.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 02:07 AM) I don't get it? The Bulls are just boring and terrible. Luol Deng is an old 28. You lock him up now then he becomes impossible to move. Carmelo can become a FA after next year. A franchise with vision would be focusing on him. LOL, Carmelo does all that to wind up in New York and you expect him to leave.

Is there any way they could rework his deal to get under the tax this year or is that locked in?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 08:25 PM) Viciedo is finally heating up again. I think he just likes battering Detroit.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 07:58 PM) Pressure...and time. Woo hoo geology!

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 06:04 PM) Don't forget Josh Hamilton, Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Pujols, Greinke, etc. David Price, to a lesser extent. Strasburg isn't quite the same pitcher as before, either. They weren't all BA number ones. Hamilton was. The rest weren't. I'll even give Hamilton a pass. Let's just imagine that the Sox traded for the #1 prospect in baseball and that was the year Wieters was #1. They got a solid starting catcher putting up similar OPS to AJ. Is that a good deal? Yeah sure there'd be some additional parts, but is that a good deal for the Sox? He's a solid player but he's not putting up 1.000+ OPS numbers.

If the Lakers want the Bulls to beat the Heat, they need to figure out how to get Boozer replaced by Gasol, not Deng.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 05:58 PM) I'm exaggerating a bit to make a point, but the Puig argument is pretty polarizing, even for non-Dodgers fans. Everyone has a pretty strong viewpoint, one way or the other. It's not like ANYBODY cares who takes the last spot in the AL (the five relievers). I wouldn't feel nearly as strongly about him missing if it weren't for this forum.
-
I still say I will trade Sale if Mike Trout is on the market. I don't care if a team is trading me the #1 prospect in baseball, I don't. Those guys don't always turn into all-stars. Heyward's been struggling. Weiters has been good but not great (.708 OPS this year). Delmon Young was a #1. Matsuzaka was a #1.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 03:57 PM) There's a solid majority of the national baseball media network in his corner though. This really is a lot like Obama/Hillary, and then the Obama presidential elections. The "media" bias issue. The East and West coast vs. the South/Heartland. The old school traditional values/conservative "silent majority" being for Freeman. It's fascinating, if you look at the voting trends, even on a county by county basis. Of course, Pence dominates the northern half of CA. Maybe if he wasn't on the ballot, then Freeman would probably lose, along with the early votes going to Adrian Gonzalez. WTF

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 03:34 PM) How about this instead: Ellsbury (CF) Beckham (2B) Morales (1B) Rios (RF) McCann © Phegley (DH) Viciedo (LF) Gillaspie (3B) Ramirez (SS) I'm not sure if we'd have the wherewithal to sign all 3 of those guys, that's going to be like a $40 million a year commitment. We might be able to, but moving at least one, if not both, of Peavy and Danks might be necessary to open up that much. And I seriously doubt they'd DH Phegley. That's a waste of his value at the catcher's spot

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 02:38 PM) Quote the post where someone guaranteed that all of their blue chip prospects would reach the majors. And it's not a bad thing to have a s***load of quality prospects. When the time comes, I'm sure that they'll flip quite a few of them for proven major league assets. There is nothing to be pessimistic about. For God's sake you even posted their lineup. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 02:30 PM) This is the best thread on this site by a very large margin. Futures squad: C: Wellington Castillo 1B: Anthony Rizzo 2B: Starlin Castro SS: Javier Baez 3B: Kris Bryant OF: Albert Almora OF: Jorge Soler OF: Eloy Jimenez Someone post one for the White Sox. No, I'm just kidding. Man, why did they have to sign Edwin Jackson? They could have put that money towards resigning Garza.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 02:59 PM) They may not get a very good deal then. This is disappointing in my opinion. It also says that they are going to be trying to compete pretty close to immediately. If the best package offered is based around guys from A ball that project as better players than the near ready players you are asking for, I hope they will accept the better deal rather than getting close to the majors guys. If they hope to accomplish things this way then Jerry better be ready to up the player to about $130 million next year. For right now the Sox absolutely ought to be asking for major league ready guys. Whether that's the case at the end of July is a different question.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 02:15 PM) That sounds awesome to me. I wish I had MLB Network This. You can make documentaries about and respect people you don't like.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 02:11 PM) I would like Ellsbury. I have a feeling we'll sit back and try to see what FAs are hanging around after the largest dollars are thrown about. Ellsbury will likely get some of those big dollars. I have a feeling he will get paid more than he can earn. I think a lot of teams will hesitate on him because of his injury history and that'll hurt the length a little bit. I'd probably be willing to push 5/$75, but I can't be sure someone won't gamble Jose Reyes money on him. Might well depend on whether there's an org doing anything deliberately stupid this offseason like the Marlins were then.

Hadn't checked this year so did now. Yup, Porcello's still terrible. ERA+ is identical to Axelrod's, how about that.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 02:05 PM) The Dominicans would come to the US and kick their butts, unless it was in CA, TX or Florida. Obviously you'd have to pick from a comparable league silly.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 02:03 PM) That sounds about right. I think he will be a great pickup for whoever gets him. Criminally over-criticized among Bulls fanbase. I think he's appropriately criticized. There are people who will defend him, he's a solid player, but he's been worth maybe 1/2 the amount he's being paid, him being banged up really did hurt the Bulls in 2011, and his contract really has been a major impediment to making the Bulls better.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 02:01 PM) If I go to the Dominican and personally scout him for a month in the DSL, then can he be on the list, lol? Will you bring a U.S. high school baseball league with you to provide competition?

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 10:53 AM) http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/10/world/americ....html?hpt=hp_c3 http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/09/world/americ...pt=hp_inthenews RE: Canadian Derailment Am I missing something here? The locomotive caught fire, the town's fire department put the fire out- disabling the locomotive that powered the brakes in the process without first consulting the engineer. Predictably, the train rolls away unmanned and wipes out a good chunk of said town when it derails, and the CEO of the railway company who had nothing to do with it is the one getting death threats and hate mail? The townsfolk are outraged that the CEO would dare suggest that their fire department inadvertently caused the train to roll away? The mayor of this little village and the leader of the Mounties decline to comment as to whether or not they will speak to the railway CEO, who again, had jack-s*** to do with the mess their own clown fire dept. inadvertently (but nevertheless, recklessly) created? Canada... Why should it be even possible for firefighters to accidentally disengage the breaking system for a rolling bomb?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 01:54 PM) Better? No way. As good as before? I hope so. It's still plausible for him to get better. There was plenty of room for him to improve his outside shooting game and to become a more efficient scorer if he could take advantage of defenses collapsing on him. To do that though he'd have to physically come back where he was and be able to force defenses to resume collapsing on him.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 11:06 AM) more like "throw money at the problem and hope" These arent even polished veterans or solid prospects, these are just kids. Just look at how excited the people here are about where their lineup will be in 5 years when all the guys sitting down in A ball reach the big leagues like they're guaranteed to do.
