QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 04:56 PM) NY Post reporting a Saudi national is a suspect, currently being guarded in a Boston Hospital. So, based on their track record on the day I should assume this is false?
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 04:54 PM) Why would that matter to the authorities? Because they're also trying to track people down and "I can't get in touch with person x" turns into a missing person report too easily. And, in general, because they're actually in the business of public safety and giving advice in this situation fits that role.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 04:35 PM) BPD asking people not to use cell phones since it might set off more bombs? Didn't mythbusters debunk that? They're asking people not to use cell phones because the cell networks were overwhelmed.

This popped up about 5-10 minutes or so ago: Firefighters found what they think is an unexploded device after blasts that killed 2 people at Boston Marathon.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 04:31 PM) ummmm.... @BostonGlobe BREAKING NEWS: Police getting multiple reports of unexploded devices around Boston Right now the BPD are probably flooded with reports of suspicious looking packages and bags. Anything and everything is getting called in. 99.9% will be nothing. People will be calling the police for a UPS box they weren't expecting right now. Plus, a lot of people in the crowd probably had bags and dropped them after the first blast.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 04:00 PM) Interesting. So, it would have been about 3 in 3 blocks. The area is a couple blocks from the Prudential center...that's the big buildings you can see in the background when there's an outdoor shot from Fenway. Very dense business area.

QUOTE (Cali @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 03:58 PM) Are they still gonna play this game? Or any games this evening? yes. Unless the Red sox have a home game or something else happens, nothing should change.

QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 11:53 AM) I think you can potentially evaluate all of those things -- but what is unavoidable of course, is confusing cause and effect. This is why you have other measures. We might see a teacher with a poorer performing class than others at his/her grade level, but before the conclusion is made that the teacher performed poorly, internal observations would need to confirm that. Was the teacher assigned students equitably? Is the teacher evaluated well in observation? Was the teacher qualified in the first place? etc. But all of those things take effort and cost money. Making those kind of evaluations takes people time and money, and so you get to choose which thing you want...do you want effective evaluations, do you want money in the classroom, or do you want higher taxes? The reason why people want to do this with just standardized tests is that it's easy. You put a pile of documents into a grading machine, plug the data into Excel, and 5 minutes later you know who to fire.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 01:16 PM) Balta, no one asked Dunn to do what he's currently doing. His K % rate was 35.7% in 2011, 34.2% in 2012, and is 32.6% this year. His BB % was 15.1% in 2011, 16.2% in 2012, and is 4.3% this year. His HR % was 2.2% in 2011, 6.3% in 2012, ans is 4.3% this year. So he's striking out just about the same (slighty better), but instead walking and hitting home runs he's just making a lot more weak outs. Please tell me who asked for that? He's basically become a one true outcome player and unfortunately for us it's the one true outcome you don't actually want. Yeah, no one asked Dunn to stop hitting HR and walking while making more contact, but people regularly say they want more contact from him. Here's Ventura saying so: “You want him to be more aggressive. For a guy like him, there is something about hitting earlier in the count instead of taking pitches that are close or just off. We’re not talking about expanding the zone and swinging and missing, you’re talking about being a little more aggressive, going out of the zone and making contact.” Everyone seems to pretend that "Yeah, more contact from Dunn earlier in the count" would be great, when that's simply not what made him a tolerable player and a contributor to baseball teams. When people ask for more contact from Dunn, they have to live with the consequences, and that's less power and fewer walks.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 12:04 PM) Wait. We know that? It's hard for us to be worse on some of these levels. We have the lowest OBP in baseball right now of .273. Last year these same players were at .317 for the year, and that's with a .280 OBP out of 3b for the full year. The same thing can be said about Detroit's bullpen. They may not be good, but they're not going to put up a 5.59 ERA the whole year.

Buehrle to face Sox for the first time...

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 01:13 PM) Yea, that 10 era really shows a guaranteed shutout I spent a bit of time debating whether to point out that Brett Myers ERA was over 12 when we faced him. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 01:03 PM) The other downside of being talented, you lose players that could probably play elsewhere because your team is just that deep. The last 3-4 years we've been leaching 4 star players because they cant see the court the way they thought they would. He had every opportunity to earn more PT this year and failed to do so. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 12:47 PM) This is going to be ugly, folks. I guarantee you he will shut the Sox down, unless he's suddenly lost it for good. He simply feasts on teams that refuse to take a walk. Soft tossing lefty? This is going to be interesting. He's Bruce Chen with actual talent. I hope it's 0-0 and we win it off a Blue Jay reliever in the ninth. Guesses...how many times will Hawk say the phrase "He's got a great changeup" tonight? I'm down for 3. -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 10:09 AM) Trading up is almost always a bad deal and I think most teams know it. I think it's going to be hard for KC (or anybody else near the top) to find a taker. The new CBA has helped with this some. If the #1 pick is an average player, he's not the top paid player at his position any more.
