  1. QUOTE (Jake @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) But Balta, Quaker sells the less processed version more cheaply and in larger quantities. They could make a better version of the convenience product, they do right now overseas, and they choose not to do so.
  2. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 02:03 PM) They took one product, made it into another, different tasting product, it was hugely successful. So now they're creating a third new product. What's wrong with that? You can't even find that to be hilarious?
  3. Oh, and just because we're kind of on the subject... This also happened.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 01:51 PM) But I want it to be INSTANT with PEACHES & CREAM and I want it to contain NOTHING BUT ORIGINAL, GOD-INTENDED OATMEAL. Like I said, you've basically summed up the product that gets sold in the rest of the world. I don't mind some processing in foods, I actually like the convenience, and I'm not going to complain about that. All I'm saying is...we can do better, but we don't, and the reason why we don't winds up being the management and investors who run the manufacturers.
  5. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 01:49 PM) Logically this makes no sense. It's going to cost the company more money to put more additives into their products. I'm sure this is based on geographical considerations and regulations. And yet, here we are, the thing you say shouldn't make sense is exactly the world we live in. Those preservatives and gunk are just that cheap these days, particularly since the taxpayer covers a large chunk of them. This is why we can do better.
  6. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) OK, well "peaches and cream" isn't bare bones oatmeal so... But that's the point. They can and do make this exact product with 1/3 as many ingredients and sell it overseas for effectively the same price. We get the preservative laden version by choice of their investors (and because the government doesn't say no).
  7. If Lebron wants to complain about the refs not giving him calls all season long, why does he wait until after a big, near-historic loss to make that complaint?
  8. QUOTE (Reddy @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 10:31 AM) good. that oughta shut those f***ers up. yeah you can shoot missiles at us, but our bombers are already AT YOUR HOUSE. you wouldn't be alive to see your nukes hit. It'll just encourage them.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 12:25 PM) What's your definition of a preservative loaded box? http://www.peapod.com/itemDetailView.jhtml...M=1364487520155 This has some additional elements to increase the volume of the oatmeal. Is that really bad though? Keep in mind too that a lot of random crap added to food is because of the way we ship/process it. But that again goes to availability in areas where the food is from half way around the world. I don't discount that we're all hopped up on corn syrup. But you don't have to be, and as we discussed a few months back, doing so is a personal choice not generally motivated by finances. People choose to eat processed foods when it's cheaper and healthier to eat fresh produce. I can't see anything at peapod, but if it's the same version I get at my grocery store, here's an example ingredient list. If you cut that ingredient list in half, I'd happily pay more for it and all that it would be is the same product sold in the UK.
  10. QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 11:51 AM) This is the changing face of operating a sports franchise...it is not a myth...teams that play in larger markets have more lucrative media deals. They have larger tv and radio audiences, and thus collect more money for the rights to broadcast their games then smaller market teams. Revenue is trending away from gate receipts being the larger source of revenue to tv and radio money being the more important sources of revenue. This is happening generally all over the sports landscape, but is even more apparent in markets with large population centers. The White Sox though are locked into their TV deals for a long, long time. 2019 is when they supposedly come up for renegotiation. The White Sox ownership group is supposedly a part owner of CSN Chicago, so they pull a little bit of it back as an investment that way.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 10:11 AM) Most choices aren't particularly healthy, though, and as the author noted, the unhealthy choices are the ones we subsidize e.g. corn syrup in damn near every processed food. There's strong profit motive to keep a large portion of our choices focused on not-really-that-healthy foods, and some of that comes back to basic biology and what our brains want us to consume because we haven't had tens of thousands of years to adapt to the industrialization of food. The thing that drives me nuts in terms of lack of competition is that there shouldn't be a price driver towards the more processed stuff. If I went to the UK, I could buy a box of instant oatmeal that isn't loaded with preservatives. Some sugar yes, but you know, 4-5 ingredients, for a comparable price as a preservative loaded box here in the US. But to buy that same quality of oatmeal in the US, I have to find a high priced organic box; the only option I'm given at an affordable price point is the preservative loaded option. They actually make better versions of the same product to sell overseas at normal prices, but those versions are unavailable to the american consumer.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 09:10 AM) I have to agree with this really meatball post. I'm feeling the pride this morning. It's been a long 11 some months for Bulls fans. Last night, though it didn't mean all that much, meant a lot. I cannot wait until Rose gets back and I can become a rational poster again. There's definitely some serious pleasure in watching the Heat storm off the court without doing handshakes as the crowd makes a ton of noise, followed by them going into press conferences complaining about the refs.
  13. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 08:38 AM) Don't you think that $23M could have gotten them a division title if it was used last year? Scrolling through the FA's who signed last year...they would have had to have picked the perfect guy, a guy who outplayed his contract significantly. The only guy who signed a contract for less than $23 million who would have been a substantial upgrade of nearly 3 wins at any position is Josh Willingham, who turned out to be one of the best signings of the year last year. None of the 3b who signed for less than that amount would have made up 3 wins. Aramis Ramirez would have made a difference, but he signed for $36 million for 3 years, so $23 million alone doesn't do it. Hell, Nick Punto got $3 million last year and hit .219.
  14. I want to give props to the crowd in Chicago. Even Cleveland is at the point now where they're begrudgingly cheering Lebron. Chicago says f*** that S***, you come into the Madhouse and expect everything handed to you and we'll tear you apart.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 09:06 PM) Then there would be complaints we were eroding or devaluing the "core fan product" by lowering ticket prices...leading to more fans and the ones with the suites and box seats having to compete more in concession lines or parking further away or having to wait an extra 15-20 minutes to get out on the expressway after the games. Dude...they actually lowered ticket prices this year. That was the point.
  16. QUOTE (Brian @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 09:13 PM) Abundance of crying from Heat Also known as "a day of the week".
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 08:49 PM) 'Merica edit: but also lol@"atheist" shoes Yeah, I figured it was best if I didn't ask why and just assumed it was fate.
  18. Maybe they could invest those profits into cutting ticket prices for 2013? That'd help a lot of fans.
  19. German company makes "Atheist" branded shoes. Ships some of them to America. Notices they're having delivery problems. Realizes their packaging says the word "Atheist" on it. Ships 89 sets of shoes in packaging bearing the word Atheist, 89 pairs in packaging that doesn't have that word. Uses US Postal Service. Atheist labeled packages found to go missing 10 times, compared to 1 for the control group. Atheist labeled packages take an average of 3 days longer to arrive when they do arrive.
  20. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 06:30 PM) Rose out tonight. And that's a 2013 season for him as far as I'm concerned. Yawn.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 03:35 PM) Which is exactly why if he isn't ready, he needs to be closed out as a possibility for this season. If he isn't back tonight or within a couple days, there's no reason to bring him back this season. I wouldn't want him playing in the playoffs against the Heat or Pacers and having the crap beat out of him if he's only played ~5 games beforehand.
  22. This "25 spring training stories that do matter" was good for seeing where a lot of teams are coming in to the season. Had no idea that Teheran was dealing this spring.
  23. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 02:17 PM) Just thought I'd check Viciedo stats this spring against right and left handed pitchers since an improvement against righties would go a long way towards him taking the next step. Against lefties .167 .250 .481 . Against righties .326 .652 .993 . That's BA, Slugging and OPS. small sample size but complete opposite of what you would expect. Only 12 AB's against lefties so take it for what it's worth. No Rios again. Matt Zaleski starting for the Sox. Where on Earth are you finding ST Split stats?
