QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 1, 2013 -> 03:05 PM) MLB's incredibly dumb blackout rules ensure that I'll never pay for MLB.tv I don't know about MLB TV, but they've announced that the Extra Innings ones are getting better next year -
Should Verlander's new megacontract affect Sox thinking?

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Apr 1, 2013 -> 01:13 PM) How long before Sale is due for his big payday? Guessing you missed this? -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 1, 2013 -> 12:02 PM) Do we not have a missile defense system in SK? Missiles don't matter. This is straight up artillery we're talking about. Cheap to produce shells that fly on ballistic trajectories. 35 miles is the distance to Seoul. Not all of their artillery hits that far, but at least 20 guns supposedly will, with heavy anti-aircraft cover. It will not take long to level that city, and they could sit there firing thousands of shots. Any missile defense would be overwhelmed. Some good maps/images here, (Ignore the EMP thing). Japan, Guam, Hawaii those are places where missile defenses might be useful if they actually work, but Seoul is at their mercy and everyone knows it. It's 10 million hostages.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 1, 2013 -> 11:04 AM) Another reason to think the Alexei contract isn't half bad at all. Good point.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 1, 2013 -> 08:40 AM) If NK launches a missile at the US, they are getting wiped off the map pretty quickly, regardless of how successful the attack is or isn't. China is not going to stand in the way of a US retaliation against a direct attack. The more dicey scenario is if NK attacks SK and not the US. How far does China let the US go in that case? If the North attacks the South, all hell will break loose. North Korea has the entire population of Seoul within artillery range. 10 million people will be dead before anyone knows what happened. After that, the only questions will be whether the U.S. vaporizes the North completely or attempts a ground attack. China won't want itself to be destroyed to defend the kind of massacre that would happen in the opening minutes of that conflict.

Rangers close to extension with Elvis Andrus, talking in the range of 8/$120.

QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 1, 2013 -> 08:22 AM) That will be the biggest issue. They really need to be able to replace those players (at least some of them) from within if this whole thing will work out. You also didn't mention Victor Martinez, who they may want to extend after this year or at least replace by that 2015 season. They have enough DH's under contract for now.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 1, 2013 -> 08:52 AM) After scouting reports have been established, this is typically the case. I strongly doubt Viciedo will put up the same number this year. In some ways that's a good thing, because guys won't take bases even if they could have. -
Should Verlander's new megacontract affect Sox thinking?

QUOTE (joeynach @ Mar 31, 2013 -> 09:49 PM) Giants learned nothing from the Mauer contract and how much that has hamstrung at organization's payroll flexibility now for years. And the Giants unlike the Twins dont have the option of using their stud catcher at the teams DH when he ages. Mauer's contract really isn't what is hurting the Twins right now. Mauer isn't carrying the team like he was in his MVP year, but he's producing solidly almost every year it seems. The reason they're not competing is that their pipeline of players coming from the minors dried up, particularly their pitching staff. You can probably blame Morneau's injury more than Mauer's contract. If Mauer wasn't on their roster, would an extra $20 million spent on free agents be enough to turn them into contenders? If they lost mauer but kept Kubel and Cuddyer, would that have them contending? Or Liriano? Maybe it would...but the only way it would happen is if they had a couple young pitchers step in. -
Could be a make-or-breakup season for the Sox

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 31, 2013 -> 08:08 PM) But isn't that exactly what happened in the late 1980's? If you're ready to open a new ballpark, then we've got a good shot at bringing the fanbase back. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 31, 2013 -> 01:16 PM) Agree. Wasn't Pierre on the Dodgers' bench the season before we acquired him? The move might have been a big move for Ozzie, but I'm pretty sure most people saw it as a salary dump for the Dodgers and a desperation move by the Sox to find a leadoff hitter and get Ozzie some speed. Pierre was on their bench but he'd been quite successful the previous season filling in when Manroid had a 50 game suspension. But yeah, at the time, that administration was trying to cut salary due to bankruptcy/divorce proceedings and they had Manroid, Ethier, and Kemp all in the OF.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Mar 30, 2013 -> 05:11 PM) Yeah the sox should get out of the CSN Chicago deal as soon as they can and pursue a new TV rights deal that will influx the organization with hunreds of millions in revenue so they too can go off the deep end with player contracts and free agents. Adapt or die. 2019. -
Brad Stephens: bring the brick and ivy to Rosemont

QUOTE (Disco72 @ Mar 30, 2013 -> 06:23 PM) Or we could use actual data... According to the Cubs' own marketing studies, 37% of attendance at Wrigley Field is from out of state (tourists). Does that count the Chicago metro area? NW Indiana and Wisconsin? -
QUOTE (Jake @ Mar 30, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) That's a good point. It's also possible that we will try to get him out of the lineup entirely. Slausson has played some center before as well, just to note.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 30, 2013 -> 03:14 PM) Dunn homer, rocket to RF, 4th of the spring. 2-1 Brewers. fastball over the middle of the plate, belt high. just 1 hr in 36 appearances for this Henderson guy last year. That's at least 4 hits in 2 days for Dunn.

QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 30, 2013 -> 01:59 PM) Drafting a top center in round 2 would be a great idea. Then make Garza a guard again and get more flexibility. I'll raise this issue again; it's entirely possible that Garza has reached a point where he'd be terrible if he were moved back to guard. Not only has it been several years since he played there, but his play at center has been trending down.

QUOTE (kev211 @ Mar 30, 2013 -> 12:31 PM) I guarantee you at most 5k people a game are what you describe That's the difference between 32k a game and 27k a game. Especially in a park without skyboxes, that's a huge difference. -
let's also remember...if Slausson is going in at LG, he's a huge upgrade over Rachal right out of the gap. The question then winds up being whether Carimi is a real downgrade from Louis. If he is, then they'll need to think about moving someone like Scott there or drafting a RG. The comparison isn't Slausson vs. Louis, its Carimi vs. Louis and Slausson vs. Rachal.
